Jaffa Gate (Arabic: ‫باب اخلليل‬‎, Bab el-Khalil,
“Hebron Gate”) is one
of eight gates in the
walls of Jerusalem’s
Old City.
During the Crusader
period it was also
called “David’s
Gate,” for the Tower
of David citadel that
is adjacent to it. The
gate is embedded in
the western Old City
wall, and is named
for the ancient road
leading from it to the
Port of Jaffa (and to
Jerusalem’s presentday Jaffa Road),
Eretz Israel’s main
port until the British
Mandate period.

The British
were the first to
use the citadel
for peaceful
purposes, turning
it into a small
museum. During
the period
1921-1932 a few
exhibitions were
mounted in it –
“Tower of David
Exhibitions” –
showcasing the
new visual art of
Eretz Israel. The
State of Israel has
perpetuated the
British policy; the
citadel remains a
center for culture
and tourism.
When Lazer Lloyd, Israel’s greatest guitarist, takes
the stage, the guitar becomes part of his body; eyes
tightly shut, he begins to sway in an ecstatic dance.
With extraordinary artistry he produces sounds of
wailing, rejoicing, crying; the raging of a storm. His
music is an intoxicating blend of blues, rock and
gospel – all straight from the soul.
