The Oppie fleet attracted 54 entries with Erin Pearce leading the MYC contingent followed by Matthew Leary, Zac Healy and Isobel Ace. In the Toppers Frankie Dickens finished a fantastic 4th overall and 2nd girl in a fleet on 30. Well done too to Callum Elwin, Daniel Jones and Tobias Shapton on some very competitive and consistent sailing. According o Iwan Basten “Tied after 5 races in the Topper class the last race produced a show down between William Thomas and Aled Goddard, with Mari Davies and Frankie Dickens only a couple of points behind. Some gutsy sailing in the shifty Sunday conditions it was William Thomas who took line honours and the title of Welsh youth and Junior Champion 2012. A close run thing with just 4 points separating the top 4 sailors!”
Madeline Leary put in a fab performance to finish 6th place in the Oppie Regatta fleet with Tommi Coode doing his stuff on a 29er. Well done everyone, including Mums and Dads. A full account of the weekend by Iwan Basten can be found at http://welshsailingevents.org/wp-‐content/uploads/2012/02/Welsh-‐Youth2012-‐report.pdf CYRC, 28th April at Mumbles YC 10 sailors from Mumbles YC braved some challenging conditions and produced some very impressive sailing at the CYRC event. It was a pleasure to watch – even from the MYC roller coaster otherwise known as Kestrel. Full results can be found on the MYC web site at http://www.mumblesyachtclub.co.uk/index.php?menu=results Topper Inland National Championships, 5th and 6th May at Grafham Water Another great performance from Frankie Dickens at the annual Topper Inland Championships finishing 6th overall but going 1 better than at Pwllheli and finishing top female! -‐ The third year in a row that a Welsh sailor has finished as the top girl. 214 entries in total with four MYC sailors travelling to the event, Tommi Coode, Frankie Dickens, Dan Jones and Tobias Shapton. Full results are on the SailRacer website at http://www.sailracer.co.uk/results_report.asp?event=37223&usr=177225709 The 26th RYA Eric Twiname Championships, Rutland Sailing Club, 12 May 2012 -‐ 13 May 2012 The pinnacle of the RYA’s Junior racing calendar is now in its 26th year and sees the best young talents from each of six English Zones, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, in a bid to help their Zone or home country team clinch the coveted Eric Twiname Shield. Representing Wales were 2 young Mumbles sailors, Erin Pearce in the Oppie fleet and Dan Jones in his Topper – a huge achievement for both. The weekend saw some exceptional sailing in large fleets. Star of the weekend for Wales and Mumbles was Erin, finishing 9th out of 52 boats, top Welsh sailor and achieving a fantastic 2nd place in race 4. Mumbles YC is proud of you both! Dart 18 Inland National Championships, 5th and 6th May at Datchet Sailing Club 3 Dart18s from Mumbles headed up the M4 to Datchet for the Inland Nationals for a full weekend of sailing in varying conditions – most in degrees of cold. Not that I am one to exaggerate but the frost warning on the car went out between Reading and Datchet when the temperature reached the dizzying height of 5 degrees. Only one thing for it – don the dry suit and lots of layers. Just the thing you need when the race officer runs four races lasting close on 90 minutes each resulting in over 6 hours on the water and not a lot of water consumed! MYC stars of the day, and indeed the weekend, were Tim and Sue Ley producing some very competitive sailing, often leading the pack to the windward mark. Tony Rees and Jo Mullett on Sailwave and Alyson Dacey and Paul Nicholson on Wild Ones attracted mixed fortunes and were probably (definitely) more successful in the bar! Having said that, a good weekend was had by all. 11th Annual Eddystone Charity Sailing Pursuit The 11th annual Eddystone Charity Sailing Pursuit takes place on Saturday 18th August. The Pursuit seeks to raise funds for local charities that benefit the human condition. It is a one day sailing event organised by the Royal Western Yacht Club, taking funchasers from Plymouth Cattewater out to the Hand Deeps buoy (south west of the Eddystone Light) and back again. Its not a race, its a challenge to raise maximum funds for charity by giving yachtsmen and women a rare chance to support a cause dear to their heart, by raising sponsorship and endeavoring to win prize money whilst having a great days sail with a brilliant objective. All money plus the total prizes of £13500 goes to the charities. The support of your club would be invaluable for this event. Local charities are always looking for participants More details are available from our website.www.eddystonepursuit.org Each year about 70 -‐ 80 yachts participate in the South Wests no 1 fundraising sailing event. A decade of Pursuits has made over £265,000 for 125 different charities help us make 2012 memorable for your local cause.
