John W. Houghton, a transplanted New
Englander, had a thriving shoe and leather
business in Augusta when he died in 1851.
He loved his adopted community and made
provisions in his will to improve the quality
of life for many disadvantaged people, not
only those he knew but for generations to
come. His estate provided for the purchase
of land and construction of a brick
schoolhouse that was to educate “the poor
children of Ward 1.” There was no public
education in 1853. The school was also to be
used for “evangelical worship and prayer”
on Sundays.

Heritage Academy
means Rigor
No one in America questions the need for our schools to be
more rigorous, more challenging to meet the workforce
demands of the 21st century. RIGOR is not about adjusting
grading standards or adding curriculum requirements. At
Heritage Academy, RIGOR is about creating an
environment in every classroom in which every student is
expected to learn at a high level, is supported so that he
can learn at that level and can demonstrate to others that
he has learned at that high level.
How are the children of Heritage Academy doing in this
rigorous environment? The IOWA assessments, a
national norm referenced standardized test, provides us
with one metric of academic growth.
This spring, ELA (English Language
Arts) students in grades 3-6 gained on
average 2.2 years of achievement. The
national average is one year.

Heritage Academy
means Responsibility
In her book, Mindset, Carol Dweck writes about the growth mindset for teachers as applied to their students: ”You are a developing person and I am interested in your development.” Our goal at Heritage Academy is t o p a r t i c i p a t e i n growing children into responsible, productive people who can serve the Lord and their fellow man. So we have chosen to use the Love and Logic program to help us. We help children to be their own best problem solvers. Failure can be an effective ally, not something from which we protect our students. It becomes a learning experience on the way to success. Children who successfully experience failure are more likely to take the risk of learning something new or taking on a daunting challenge. They know they will grow and not be defined by any setbacks. THAT is the difference between just going to school and getting a valuable education.

Heritage Academy: Where children are building their own heritage
Matthew KuhN
Matthew began at Heritage
Academy in the third grade,
coming to us from a broken
home.
!
Here are some highlights of Matthew's
journey, in his own words...
!
“The only people that provided godly
insight into my life were my grandparents…
my grandmother had prayed with me to
receive Christ as a young boy. This is the
day that my life would change for the
better. Soon after this my grandmother felt
strongly that God wanted her to put my
sister and me into a Christian school. This
school was Heritage Academy. Five years
later, I graduated from Heritage with great
grades and with a greater understanding of
God and His church. I then went to
Westminster Schools of Augusta thanks to
the preparation I received from Heritage
Academy. Today, I am a senior, accepted to
three colleges. With my background, I could
have just accepted that I was nothing.
Instead, with the help of my grandmother,
Heritage Academy and Westminster
Schools I now know that I want to be so

scrubbed floors in order for her daughter to
go to a private school. She shared this quote
from Abraham Lincoln, "All that I am I owe
to my mother.” Christian could now share a
similar experience in having a mother who
sacrificed for her child to have a better life.
Christian also received a scholarship to
attend Westminster. Christian is now in the
U.S. Army where he will be trained to
become a dental technician specialist.

Christian Bailey
Christian also began at
Heritage in the third grade.
The only child of an older
single woman, he was being
bullied at his zoned school. His
mother is hard working and struggled to pay
even the small tuition required. When
Christian first came to Heritage, he had
difficulty reading. But his determination and
character made him a favorite amongst our
staff. In the sixth grade as the workload
became greater, his mother was less able to
help her son. She visited Dr. Tucciarone one
day to share her burden that she herself had
difficulty reading. She had never told her
son. That day, in Dr. T's presence, she
revealed this long-held secret to her son.
Then Dr. T told her story of her own mother
who never graduated from high school, who

It was a privilege
to serve Heritage
Academy in the
development office
(and as "accidental
techie") for 7 years.
I have seen the school
grow numerically in terms of student enrollment and
rising test scores. More importantly, I have seen children,
teachers and parents grow because of the influence of the
staff at Heritage Academy. Children grow
each year in depth of knowledge and
character, teachers grow in depth of quality
classroom instruction, and parents grow in
understanding of the administration’s
expectations of their participation in
nurturing their child academically, socially,
and spiritually.
Choose your Legacy
This summer I moved to the midwest due to a
delightful new marriage and the commute
between Augusta and St. Louis was simply not
feasible! I may have left my job at the school but I have
not left my love for the donors, staff and teachers who
are making an amazing institution accessible to 120
families in Augusta this year. When sharing with my
husband (and new friends and new family) about the
amazing place called Heritage Academy, it is always with
a smile that I talk about how it all began - with the
‘planned gift’ John W. Houghton gave to the city of

Augusta 150 years ago. And that gift of Houghton’s
legacy is alive and well at 333 Greene Street with 200
students filling the hallways today!
Marriage typically includes re-assessing financial
commitments and changing important information like
beneficiaries on accounts and policies. My husband and I
have made a commitment together to support the school
on a monthly basis. It is encouraging to be part of a
group of donors that are making a genuine difference by
providing funds for children's scholarship needs,
the endowment fund, tax credit scholarships,
and capital gifts that refurbished the physical
structure of the historic Houghton School to
students.
Would you consider a legacy gift to help
support Heritage Academy? Your planned
gift, just like John Houghton’s gift, can
turn your assets into long-term provision of
a quality education for the families of
Augusta. Consider naming Heritage Academy as a
beneficiary of your will, life insurance policy, retirement
plan, or “life income” arrangement. If you would like a
personal visit to discuss the needs of the school, call
Linda Tucciarone at 706-821-0034.

Why do I give to GOAL? “I like the idea that
kids at Heritage get a great education from a
dedicated staff so that they will have better
options as they go out into the world.”
-teaching professor of neurology
“The GOAL Scholarship is invaluable to my
family. As a single parent, just a few short years
ago I only dreamed of being able to provide my
children with the opportunity of a world-class
education. I never imagined that a high level of
academic rigor could be combined with a loving,
Christ-centered environment—and that I could
find a way to reach it.
We have found such a place in Heritage
Academy, where the children are well
challenged, supported, guided and cherished.
The GOAL Scholarship has made that dream a
reality and has blessed my children with the
privilege of attending such an outstanding
school. Thank you!”
