This mother of three not only instructs Johnson College’s Entrepreneurship 101 course, but also helps run the family business – owning and operating sixteen local McDonald’s franchises. In the 1950s, Albert and Carol Mueller, Curran’s parents, each immigrated to the United States from Germany. It wasn’t until both settled in Chicago, IL that they met. After their marriage, the couple bought a local bakery, which they ran for fifteen years. Then, the up-andcoming McDonald’s corporation came along. The Mueller’s jumped on-board early on. They moved to Scranton, PA and built their first McDonald’s at 900 South Washington Avenue in 1972. Their business grew from there and continues to progress to this day. Curran may have grown up in the McDonald’s business, but that doesn’t mean she didn’t work her way up the ranks. From crew member to owner, she earned each promotion in time. Curran states, “It’s beneficial to know all the aspects of your business. Apprenticing is a big part of many of my students’ careers. I myself was an apprentice to my parents throughout the years.” She believes that the biggest challenge in transitioning from protégé to mentor is learning how to lead the business into a new generation – to take things to the next level. Curran started teaching in order to tell her parents’ story and inspire young entrepreneurs. She explains, “Even though we are part of McDonald’s, which is overall a large corporation, my parents and I are actually small business owners of each individual restaurant.” Due to this, she enhances textbook knowledge by offering her students a wealth of information that she gained from her very own experiences. Owning a business is not just about profits to Curran, who strongly believes in giving back to the community. “As small business owners, we have a responsibility to our community,” she says. In the 1980s, her family helped found The Ronald McDonald House of Scranton, which serves the families of children who are hospitalized in Northeastern Pennsylvania and awards grants to organizations that directly improve the health and well-being of children. To her students, Curran stresses, “Anything is possible if you first believe in yourself.” www.Johnson.edu Pg. 3 ARC GRANT UPDATES In December 2010, Johnson College was awarded a $100,000 matching grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC).
