DHI`s 31st Annual
DHI’s 31st Annual Conference & Exposition San Diego Sunshine, warm weather, cool ocean breezes and an incredible lineup of education sessions— w hat more could you ask for at an architectural openings conference? On September 11-15, the key players within the industry came together to learn and exchange ideas and information at DHI’s 31st Annual Conference & Exposition in San Diego, California. From architects and spec writers to distributors and sales agents, people came from around the world to attend the industry’s premier event. DHI Education Foundation Day 6th Annual Forum for the Future Thursday’s Forum for the Future began the formal proceedings for this year’s Conference and Exposition. This year, for the first time ever, the Forum was included in the cost of registration for the Conference. As a result, the panel of speakers delivered their presentations to a record-breaking audience of over 600 attendees. Anyone who has ever taken an economics class can testify to just how dry and uninteresting the topic can be, but attendees were impressed and relieved that Jeff Dietrich of the Institute for Trend Research made the topic so interesting. “I was particularly fascinated by his opinions on what impact the Chinese economy will have on the US in the coming years.” —Mark Boone AHC of Capitol Door Sales 10 DOORS AND HARDWARE • DECEMBER 2006 “This will definitely impact the way we run our business in the coming years and will affect what markets we attempt to penetrate.” —noted David Hosmer of Capitol Door Sales regarding Keith Pardoe’s, DAHC, CDC, CDT, discussion on the inspection process. Beyond just being interesting, though, many found the content extremely timely—some even surprising. “A lot of his comments went against conventional wisdom,” said Mark Boone, AHC of Capitol Door Sales. “I was particularly fascinated by his opinions on what impact the Chinese economy will have on the US in the coming years.” As the openings industry continues to experience change, from building codes to the outlook on the overall economy, owners understand that their company needs to be positioned to weather the storms ahead and this year’s Forum helped provide some guidance on what steps to take and what to expect. As Patrick Teas with Comsense, Inc. noted, “This gave us a bit of a wake up call that we need to get ready, because if you can figure out what you’re going to do early on, you can get through it.” The next speaker on the panel was Former South Carolina State Fire Marshal Bert Polk. He discussed the need for balanced construction and the struggle between active vs. passive fire protection. Wrapping up the Forum was DHI’s own Keith Pardoe, DAHC, CDC, CDT, who discussed how the inspection process is going to be brought to life. Keith recently published a feature-length article in the October issue of Doors and Hardware discussing both the new fire door inspection certification program and the changes to NFPA 80. DHI Annual Golf Tournament This year, those who participated in the Foundation Golf Tournament got the opportunity to play where the pros play—Torrey Pines. Home of the PGA Tour Buick Invitational and future host of the 2008 U.S. Open, Torrey Pines Municipal Golf Course provided quite a challenge to the participants. Proceeds from the Tournament benefit the Foundation for the Advancement of Life Safety and Security. Thanks to the many companies that sponsored this year’s event. In his term as Chairman, Myers led the US military through four years of tumultuous change on the international and domestic stage. From our engagement in Iraq and Afghanistan, to the military’s heroic role following Hurricane Katrina, Myers was the principal military advisor to the President, the Defense Secretary, and the National Security Council in his role as Joint Chiefs Chairman. In his presentation, Myers offered analysis on military, security and preparedness matters at home and abroad. With his first-hand experience, he was able to provide insight into today’s issue of national security and the responsibility of our industry to advance life safety and security for the infrastructure of our society: the built environment. 16 DOORS AND HARDWARE • DECEMBER 2006 the door closer is hidden And with that, yet another successful DHI Conference came to a close.
