With over 250 kms of off road tracks, one of the best ways to explore Dirk Hartog Island is by 4WD.
Bring your own 4WD to Dirk Hartog Island and camp at one of our six designated campsites The Block, Urchin Point, Withnell Point, Sandy Point, Dampier’s Landing or Louisa Bay.
Explore some of the island’s more remote locations and have a real outback adventure on Dirk Hartog Island.
The Hartog Explorer
Our new purpose built barge has been operating since February 2015.
It’s longer, wider and can carry all types of 4WD vehicles.
AVAILABLE DECK SPACE
10.6m long and 4.2m wide.
If your vehicle and trailer is 10.6m or less, then you can drive straight on.
The barge departs from Blackie’s Beach, Steep Point.
Please check in with the local ranger to confirm pick up point.

The Department of Parks & Wildlife allow a limited number of people to camp on the island every year.
Designated camping areas are available with bookings essential.

When barge has landed and front draw bridge
is secure proceed straight and forward along
centre of barge.

Drive to end line - your skipper will signal when
to stop. Switch off engine and apply handbrake.
Exit the vehicle.
