2015 Delaware State Parks SUMMER CAMPS Table of Contents Delaware State Parks offer half-day and full-day camps all over Delaware for four- to seventeen-year-olds. Many camps offer before and after care. Camps by Park: These camps are very popular, so parents are encouraged to register children early. Campers will learn the basics of rock climbing while completing an adventure quest in Alapocas Run State Park. Climbing equipment is provided. $275 Rock Climbing Adventure Camp June 22 – 26 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.* Ages 11 – 13 Test your strength, agility and concentration while exploring the world of rock climbing. Campers will learn the basics, climb indoors at the Delaware Rock Gym, climb and hike at Alapocas Run State Park, and canoe the Brandywine River. Climbing equipment is provided. $275 Rock and Rappel Climbing Camp July 13 – 17 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.* Ages 13 – 17 Registration opens February 7 9 a.m. – Noon At the Park Office. Register early at the Open House on January 22, 5 – 7 p.m. Mail or walk-in registration is at the park office. Pay by check, cash, Visa, MasterCard or Discover. Payments are accepted in person and by mail or phone with credit card number. Half due at time of registration; full payment one month before camp begins. Before and After Care Before and after care are available for all full-day camps. Before care begins at 7:30 a.m. and after care runs through 5:30 p.m. $30 per week each or $60 for both. SPRING BREAK CAMP April 6 – 10 Ages 7 – 12 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Experience spring awakening at Bellevue with new discoveries, hiking and crafts. After care is available until 5:30 p.m. No before care. Register by March 23. $175 or $40 per day Challenge your mental and physical skills while exploring the world of rock climbing. Campers will discover the basics of top rope climbing, learn belaying and rappelling, and hike at Alapocas Run State Park. Before care is available; no after care. $100 TRAVELING CAMPS Junior Fishing Fishing Camp Learn different types of fishing, fishing ethics, safety and techniques. Explore the world of fish and fishing through hikes, hands-on activities and…fishing. This is not a traveling camp. Fish at a different site each day to learn about fresh and saltwater fishing, fly fishing, fishing ethics, safety and techniques. For all skill levels. All supplies are included; campers may bring their own equipment. Campers will create a nature journal. $210 Naturalist Apprentice July 27 – 31 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Ages 11 – 13 For serious nature lovers; we will develop your naturalist skills and explore stewardship principles. Service projects include packing food, visiting senior centers and gardening. Travel to different sites for paintballing, parasailing, rock climbing, archery and more. Learn about safety and team-building. No experience necessary. Outdoor activities will be held as weather permits. After care, Monday through Thursday, 3:30 – 5 p.m., $40 per week. Each day features a different theme, including outdoor survival skills, life in and along the creek,and animal adaptations. No after care. Discover a new animal and its habitat each day through hikes, creek investigations, nature games and crafts. No after care. $140 Outdoor Adventure Camp Session I: June 22 – 26 Session II: July 20 – 24 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Ages 11 – 14 Enjoy an adventurous week of activities like hiking, canoeing, disc golfing, survival skills, building shelters, orienteering, geocaching and rock climbing. We will also go tubing on the creek, geocaching, explore trails and splash around on a hike. We travel to Lums Pond at the end of the week for a cross-camp competition. Campers must be able to swim. $185 New in 2015! Nature Scientists July 6 – 10 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Ages 9 – 12 Make things fly, ooze, light up and drop from the roof in fun, safe experiments. Power a potato, make a film canister rocket, make rock candy and more. We will use our science skills as we explore hiking trails, tube the Brandywine and stomp through the creek. $200 New in 2015! Junior Wild Rangers July 13 – 17 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Ages 9 – 12 We travel to Flint Woods Nature Preserve to learn about salamanders, explore the Bluebird Trail and build and a take-home bird box. Learn skills like shelter building and tracking. Discover the animals under your feet, like “Gary,” our resident groundhog! Other activities include tubing, fishing and creek hikes. Water Adventures Session I: July 20 – 24 Session II: July 27 – 31 Session III: August 3 – 7 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Ages 8 – 10 From swimming and tubing to stream stomps, boat races and raft-building contests, campers will cool off and learn about aquatics. Campers must be able to swim. $200 Wilderness Survival July 6 – 10 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Ages 7 – 10 Learn “Leave No Trace” skills, how to put up a tent, how to build a campfire or a survival shelter, orienteering, fishing, river safety and more. Camps will be filled with Zoo visits, live animal presentations, crafts, games, stories, learning projects and more. Payment and Cancellation Policy: Payment is due in full at time of registration. A $25 processing fee will be charged for all cancellations up to April 30; cancellations after May 1 will receive a 50% refund; no refunds after June 1. Learn which animals call the rainforest their home and discover ways to save their shrinking habitat. Dog Days of Summer Jr. Zoo Keepers Advanced (Specialty Camp)* June 29 – July 3 Ages 5 to 13 The dog days of summer can be “ruff” so beat the heat while learning about cool canines. Campers will learn responsible pet care and explore different canine groups. Daily Rate: $55, $45 DZS or $200, $175 DZS (all 4 days) WILD Artists July 6 – 10 Ages 6 to 9 Set your creative side free and learn about shapes, patterns, colors and shades that occur naturally. Take a culinary journey into the animal kingdom and learn what’s on the menu for some of your favorite animals. Learn all about adaptations and discover how animals’ structures help them survive. $200, $175 DZS Animal Edibles July 20 – 24, August 3 – 7 Ages 11 to 13 Discover what it takes to work at the zoo. Campers go behind-the-scenes, help prepare animal diets, clean an exhibit area, study animal behavior, create enrichment and more. *Campers must be able to complete physically challenging activities with limited assistance and be able to come into contact with allergens, such as animal dander and hay, safely. Campers will have limited contact with select animals. Campers may only register for one session per age group. Color Me Wild July 6 – 10 Ages 4 to 5 Animals come in all shapes, sizes, and COLORS. Learn about our colorful creatures, focusing on a different color each day. Animal Babies August 10 – 14 Ages 4 to 5 No one can deny how adorable animal babies are. Learn about different animal babies, their parents and what it takes for them to grow. Before and after care are available at an additional cost for summer camps only ($15/week for before care, $25/week for after care). Registration opens January 2. We reserve the right to cancel camps that have fewer than five participants. What lives in the different waterways of Delaware. Fishing excursions for the week will include freshwater fishing in Killens and Coursey’s Ponds, seining at Cape Henlopen, fish dissection and more. No experience is needed; we supply bait and equipment. Walk on the wild side this week to learn more about the animals of our world. Participate in games and activities exploring the world of the wild. We will visit the Brandywine Zoo and the Delaware State Fair. July 6 – 10 Ages 8 – 12 $165 SPRING BREAK CAMP Pirates of the Pond April 6 – 10 Ages 6 – 11 Join us as we explore Killens Pond in the spring time. Hikes, games and nature experiments are sure to keep us active and having fun during the break from school. $150 SUMMER CAMPS Water Wonderland Survivor Enjoy a week of all the water Killens Pond has to offer. Campers will explore the pond on paddleboats, discover the critters in the pond by dip-netting and fishing, and take daily swim lessons at the water park. All swimming levels are welcome. Learn the necessities of surviving in the wild. Acquire orienteering, shelter building and fire starting skills, and put your abilities to the test when we camp out on Thursday night. Dinner on Thursday and breakfast and lunch on Friday will be provided. June 15 – 19 Ages 6 – 9 $150 June 22 – 26 Ages 9 – 13 $225 Puzzles at the Pond June 29 – July 3 Ages 7 – 10 Spend the week finding clues to solve a puzzle. Learn how science is like a puzzle and use inquiry skills to create your own nature experiment to solve. Finish off the week with a StarSpangled science experiment. 15 $150 July 13 – 17 Ages 6 – 9 Ahoy! Calling all pirates for a week of treasure hunting, map navigating and ship building. Explore the “sea” on paddleboats, and spend some time making your own treasure chests. We will visit Cape Henlopen to become pirates and explore the Fenwick Island Treasure Museum! July 27 – 31 Ages 7 – 10 $165 Boating Basics August 3 – 7 Ages 8 – 12 Paddle, kayak, and canoe yourself through Delaware’s waterways. This week of camp will teach the basics of boating with trips on a catamaran at Fenwick Island, tubing on White Clay Creek and a pontoon boat ride at Trap Pond. Boating experience is not required. $175 $165 The Extremely Amazing Race July 20 – 24 Ages 9 – 13 This week takes campers on extreme adventures around the state. We will head to new locations to participate in activities such as rock climbing, kayaking, fishing and stand -up paddleboarding (must know how to swim). $195 Ecological Explorations August 10 – 14 Ages 7– 10 Delaware’s diverse ecosystems offer much to be explored. Red velvet ants, praying mantis, Hercules beetles, oh my! Discover cool adaptations in the largest taxonomical class around. Sweep net and dip net for critters then see some special collections. Monday through Friday in the Recreation Center (upstairs). 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Up Close and Wild Adventure Rangers Wildlife encounters include a trip to Tri-State Bird Rescue and a visit from the Brandywine Zoo. For the grand finale: we get a visit from wild hawks and owls that fly overhead! Take a look behind the scenes with a park ranger, kayak the pond in search of wildlife, ride in an official ranger boat, and meet some mounted police. Campers will learn about adventures and conservation in the parks.
