1965
HELLA universal 2-chamber combination rear light
series 1305 with lens reflectors using bulb technology
in the smallest conceivable design.
1998
The 122 mm modular light series for individual and
combined lights is launched. The series will be
enhanced on an ongoing basis in the next few years
with pattern-free and LED lights.
2008
A success story continues:
The Caraluna Modular for vertical flush-mounting
joins the Caraluna family. Pattern-free and coloured
lens with modular reflector inserts, which allow for a
customised appearance, installation with bulb-based
or LED technology and horizontal flush-mounting.
1973
Further development of the 3-chamber combination
rear light series. The 2844 series is launched in a very
progressive design for the time.
2000
The customer-specific multi-function light with
pattern-free lens adorns hobby caravans.
2009
122 mm round light upgrade to LED and a new
member of the Caraluna family: Caraluna Vertical
with chrome effect.
1978
The HELLA universal 3-chamber combination rear
light series 3409 – designed as a surface-mounted
solution for towed vehicles such as trailers –
becomes the lighting standard for caravans.
2002
The Caraluna success story continues. The first
HELLA-specific light with pattern-free lens for
caravans and motorhomes is launched - Caraluna II
for horizontal surface-mounting.
2010
HELLA matches the lighting technology inside the
light with the fluid exterior body design. A ringshaped 3D body around the edge which generates a
“glowing look” thanks to the use of cutting-edge LED
technology takes over the taillight function and gives
the rear end of the new Fendt Brilliant a unique and
unmistakable appearance.

Quick trip to the past
The first “touring cars” appeared as early as the mid-19th century. The sometimes quite
luxuriously equipped predecessors of the modern caravan were invented in Britain. Initially
they were horse-drawn, but shortly after the invention of the motor vehicle the first petroldriven coaches were hitched to the touring cars. There has been a close relationship
between Hella and the automobile for over one hundred years, and this naturally includes
caravans and motorhomes.
Here is a quick look at our most recent shared past.
1986
light series 4460 as surface-mounted solution with
lens pattern becomes established. The design size
increases in line with the more stringent safety
requirements for more light output.
2004
The success story of Caraluna II is continued: The
Caraluna II with chrome effect and transparent lens
with high-sheen vapour-plated reflectors is launched
on the market.
2011
HELLA adapts the lighting technology of a highly
innovative lighting geometry for the Hobby Premium
Caravan. Two opposing “hockey stick" shaped 3D
lights, with LED technology for taillight and stop light,
highlight the successful shape of the vehicle. The
remaining functions with conventional solutions are
installed behind an elegant stripe pattern and go into
the handle which overlaps into the lights. Simply
premium. A milestone in caravan construction.
1989
light series 6459 with lens pattern finds its way into
the caravan industry. The light sweep means it can be
flush-mounted near the outer edges. This design
effect gives a whole new dimension to motorhome
and caravan contours.
2005
Modular light series Agroluna for individual and
combined lights with pattern-free lenses and bulbbased technology is launched. Customer-specific
multi-function light Bürstner and Chateau.
2011
Two opposing eyebrow-shaped lights installed using
innovative light-transmitting technology in LED
technology for the taillight give Knaus motorhomes of
the last generation an unmistakable face. The lights
are equally impressive thanks to the sophisticated
detailing inside. All under the motto: you will see
motorhomes with different eyes.
1996
Birth of the first multi-function light for the
motorhome and caravan industry. As well as
integrating all the light functions, the required
triangular reflector is also integrated horizontally
surface-mounted. The HELLA Caraluna I becomes a
sign of quality and a recognised brand for a whole
industry.
2006
Customer-specific developments for hobby caravans
and motorhomes, Hymer motorhomes and Fendt
caravans and motorhomes. Upgrade to Caraluna
multi-function light series: Caraluna II Plus with
combined indicator/reversing spotlight.
2012
Lighting technology made to measure – HELLA uses
innovative LED light transmitter technology for the
taillight of the new generation of Adria Caravans.
The light transmitters produce a particularly
sophisticated night-time signature, giving Adria
Caravans a distinctive rear design.
More design freedom from LEDs
The use of LEDs gives design engineers much greater design freedom. Ergonomic aspects can be implemented more easily.

LED indicators and the patented failure check
Legal requirement in all ECE states
The indicators on vehicles registered for use on public roads
must be monitored. An indicator failure must be communicated
to the driver visually or acoustically. This applies in all ECE states.
A potential failure of the indicator must therefore be monitored
by the vehicle. Manufacturers use different control methods for
this purpose. However, the failure controls in use today cannot
detect simple LED lights and display an error when they are
used. All HELLA LED indicators have integrated electronics for
failure control. The indicators monitor themselves. They generate
an impulse that is evaluated by the electronic ballast. This
ballast simulates a 21W bulb which means it can be used with
conventional indicators.
Safe conversion to LED indicators is now possible using
patented HELLA electronics
HELLA supplies electronic ballasts for all HELLA LED indicators
which make it possible to retrofit the indicator failure display on
various vehicles. This is necessary if the vehicle manufacturer
does not guarantee an indicator bulb failure check via the vehicle's
electrical system.
The method is patented by HELLA. There are currently three
different ballasts and several different LED indicators available.
If just a single LED fails, the light is faulty and the pulse is no
longer generated. In this case, the ballast switches off bulb
simulation and the indicator reports the fault to the driver.
LED-light failure check and correct electrical connection
Operation of the LED light with AC voltage or synchronised DC voltage is not
permitted. The individual light functions may only be operated with a vehicle fuse of
max. 3 A.
Due to the low watt output of LED lights, which are distinctly different from a bulb
version, problems can arise in bulb failure control when operating traction vehicles.
As the indicator check is required by law, we recommend operating the light only in
conjunction with the indicator control unit, HELLA part no. 5DS 009 552-... .
Some traction vehicles also detect other light functions. This is a vehicle convenience
function that is not required by law and does not exempt the driver from his or her
obligation to visually inspect the lighting equipment. Even in this case, low outputs
can lead to misdiagnoses (instrument panel in the cab shows a light failure even
though it is working fine).

vehicle, please contact the traction vehicle manufacturer.

DynaView® Evo2
A new lighting era
DynaView® Evo2 combines the cornering light and fog light
safety functions in compact round auxiliary lights, which can be
universally installed in many different vehicles. When the low
beam is switched on, the right or left cornering light is activated
automatically and immediately when the indicator is actuated or
when the vehicle drives round a bend at a speed of less than 40
km/h.
A yaw rate sensor measures the vehicle's angular acceleration
and triggers the turn-on signal when the car drives through a
curve. At the end of the curve, a dimmer softly fades the extra
light. If the reverse gear is engaged, both cornering lights are
switched on and ensure broad and bright illumination of the areas
along the left and right of the vehicle.

Advantages of the daytime running light
The daytime running light provides a decisive safety advantage in
road traffic and reduces the number of accidents which result in
serious injuries by 58%.*
For this reason, and long before the introduction of any legal
requirement, HELLA developed daytime running lights to increase
driving safety.

Daytime running lights are safer than low beams.
The HELLA daytime running lights generate a passively radiating
white signal light. This enables the vehicle to be seen earlier and
better by other road-users. HELLA thus ensures extra reaction
time and offers a noticeable safety advantage.

The light colour, which is similar to daylight, offers more safety
and comfortable, fatigue-free driving. Three white high-power
LEDs function as a light source per lighting function. The light
is projected through the 70 mm DE lens homogeneously on the
street.

The ultrasonic system is a headlight range
adjustment system for 50 mm and 90 mm
headlight modules for original equipment and
upgrades for vehicles with Xenon headlights.
ULTRASONIC SYSTEM FOR HEADLIGHT RANGE ADJUSTMENT – OVERVIEW
The sensor in this system measures the
distance from the vehicle undercarriage to the
road and forwards the signal to the central
control unit, which then optimally adjusts the
headlights via the actuator motors on the
Xenon headlights.

Which motorhome and caravan enthusiast has not had this
experience? Shortly before the start of the holiday, the motorhome
or caravan battery is fully charged and ready to go. The first days
of the holiday go just fine, but then the battery dies completely.
Nothing works! The reasons are varied. On the one hand, there
are more and more consumers in the vehicle. Also, as the battery
ages, it loses the ability to recharge at 100% of its nominal

Supplement to the electronics for protecting the LED
against high voltages/currents in the on-board network
according to ISO 7637-2.
Overloading of the LEDs can be caused by voltage spikes
in the vehicle because of:
Jump-starting
Defective control units
Load dump pulse
(faulty battery contact)
These can stress or damage the LED, which can lead to a
failure or a reduction in the service life. By supplementing
the circuit with appropriate components, it can be
protected, so that the service life is extended and failure
is prevented.
Bi-polarity of the light
Even when the connecting cable is attached with reverse
polarity, the LED functions fully.
The semiconductor in an LED must always be operated
with the correct polarity. The wrong polarity damages the
LED, so that LED lights are always equipped with reverse
polarity protection (diode). However, this function only
works when "+" and "-" are correctly connected. If a light
has a bi-polar circuit, function is independent of the
contact connections. This ensures Poka-yoke (avoiding
faulty installations) in conjunction with insulation
displacement technology, for instance. However, the
additional components on the PCB also increase the
costs.

International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR;

Regulation according to ECE R 48:
The driver must be informed of a failure of the indicator
function. To remain legally compliant, this requirement
must also be fulfilled for LED lights. This requirement is
fulfilled by means of an integrated self-diagnostic unit on
the PCB of the LED and an electrical pulse. Since the end
of 2011, this failure check with pulse by HELLA has been
ISO standard: ISO 13207.
If the indicator failure check is not ensured, the general
vehicle certification becomes void. It is therefore not legal
to operate vehicles without indicator failure check in
countries subject to ECE R 48.
Basically, two different circuits are possible for LED lights:

Higher expenditure during development because of
complex circuit and necessary EMC approval. Higher
price because of electronic components, but electronic
current regulation allows for maximum LED service life.
