About the Cover
The Natural Trading Company in Newcastle, California
is famous for the earliest tomato harvest in Placer County,
heritage poultry and delicious, organic wheatgrass. The
farm was founded as an orchard by a Japanese-American

The National Organic Program
The Federal Organic Foods Production Act of 1990 standardized US
organic farming practices so consumers could expect consistent use of the
word organic. Certified organic farmers must follow NOP specifications
to determine which materials (fertilizers, pesticides, etc.) they can use.
When manufacturers give us a letter of compliance with the National
Organic Program, we mark the product with the Meets NOP logo.
Organic Materials Review Institute
The Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) evaluates the
acceptability of products for organic use. Its evaluation process now
takes NOP specifications into consideration. Many organic certifiers
have long relied on OMRI’s lists to simplify the process of determining

Washington State Department of Agriculture
The Washington State Department of Agriculture also has an organic
program that looks at the acceptability of products for organic use, and
maintains a list of products they have determined are NOP compliant.

Weed Control
The Organic Way

Organic Weed Control
Organic weed control is more than getting on your hands and knees
to pull weeds. We’ve got a whole slew of techniques to get rid of the
weeds in your garden.
Any and all of these alternatives to harmful chemicals are worth a try.
Remember that integrated pest management for any pest, including
weeds, often requires more than one method for adequate control.
Take a look at the variety of ways Tricia prevents and tackles weeds in
our video on organic weed control.
Pre-Emergent (pg 5)
is an herbicide that inhibits seeds from germinating, like our Corn
Gluten Meal.
Soil Solarization (pg 5)
is done with clear plastic; that lets the sun’s rays in and cooks the
weed seeds. Transparent polyethylene plastic placed on moist soil
during the hot summer months for approx. 6 weeks increases soil
temperatures to levels lethal to many soilborne plant pathogens, weed
seeds, and seedlings (including parasitic seed plants), nematodes, and
some soil residing mites.
The World Of Mulch And Films (pg 6-7)
Deprive weeds of sunlight to deprive them of life! All our mulches are
biodegradable and will eventually break down and nourish your soil.
One of our favorite mulches to spread on garden beds is Miracle
Mulch, made from sustainable and renewable coconut shells. It will
block light from reaching weed seeds.
If you’d like a heavier mulch, try our Cocoa Mulch (pro: adds the
aroma of chocolate to your garden, con: should not be used if you
have dogs).
For a quick and easy weed blocker around the base of new trees, lay
down a Coco Fiber Weed Mat.
Mulching films and cloth are also effective light blockers that
suppress weeds. Red mulching film has proven to increase tomato and
strawberry production while suppressing weeds.
Biodegradable film is great on annual veggie beds, and an alternative
to plastic based fabrics. Black weed fabric is another popular choice.

WEED CONTROL
Organic Herbicides (pg 8) Ingredients may include
concentrated d- limonene, clove oil, cinnamon oil, vinegar, citric acid
or other botanical oils. These herbicides are non-selective and nonsystemic, meaning any plant sprayed will be affected, and they kill
the above surface foliage of plants.
Non-Selective Synthetic herbicides can “select” which types
of plants the chemicals will effect. Organic herbicides cannot do
this and so are “non-selective.”
Non-Systemic Synthetic herbicides go into the system of
plants, organic herbicides do not, and so are “non-systemic.”
If you’d like a spray alternative that will burn leaves of weeds, try one
of our organic herbicides, such as BurnOut, Avenger, Avenger, and
WeedZap. All of these are “non-selective” herbicides which means
they will harm any plant they contact, so make sure you spray only
the weeds. And wear your protective gear.
The herbicides are effective on grassy and broadleafed weed plants, up
to 6 inches tall. Spray enough to coat the weed well.
Weed Flamers (pg 9) are a great tool for scorching weeds into
submission! Just a quick wave of the fiery wand breaks down cell
walls, effectively killing the plant. Flamers are highly effective on
young, annual weeds, but perennial weeds with taproots or woody
stems may require reflaming. Try one of our Red Dragon flamers
with a propane tank. Used on farms, between rows of crops, it’s
also effective in gravel areas, or for cracks in paved driveways and
sidewalks. Keep a hose handy, just in case. Not for use during hot,
dry months.
Weeding With Tools (pg 7)
Once the weeds are grown there is only one way to get rid of them!
Pull them out by the roots! We have several tools that will make that
task easier on your back and knees.
A staff favorite is the Fiskars UpRoot® Weeder. You don’t have
to bend to use the tool, or even to toss the weed in a bucket for
disposal. And the Arthritis Association gave this tool an “ease of use”
commendation. The UpRoot® is a super tool for pulling up perennial
weeds with tap roots (like dandelions) or clumps of perennial grasses.
For even more choices, check out our array of weeders and hoes. Use
them to cut off annual grasses and broadleaf weeds as they sprout, or
to dig out perennial broadleaf and grassy weeds.

suppressant that inhibits root
formation of germinating
seeds in established lawns,
vegetable gardens and flower
beds while also acting as a
slow release fertilizer due to its
9% Nitrogen content. Safe to use around new plants with
existing root systems, and unlike chemical herbicides, is
also harmless to people, pets and groundwater. Must be
applied before weeds germinate. Apply 20-40 lbs/1000 sq
ft, or 900-1800 lbs/acre, of lawn or garden in early spring
and again in late summer. If possible, work into the top
inch of soil. Water deeply after application and allow soil to
dry (this is important) before watering again. For perennial
beds apply 2-3 lbs per 100 sq ft and thoroughly mix into
soil. Can also be blended with mulch to further suppress
weeds. After applying corn gluten, allow 1-4 months before
direct seeding. NOTE: While we are continuing to look for
a source of organic corn gluten, we have been unable to locate
any so far. Consequently, the corn gluten we now carry is from
“conventional” sources and there is unfortunately no guarantee
that it is free from any GMO corn.

PST Thermal Green Mulching Film
PST thermal green film prevents weed growth like black plastic
mulch while providing high enough soil temperatures for early

In studies at the University
of California Kearney Ag
Center, tests show that
plants grow better and
more rapidly over reflective mulch
than ones without any mulch. Both harvest
yields and coloring of fruit increased with silver mulch.
Silver mulches reflect sunlight up into the undersides of the canopy
thereby increasing photosynthesis, leading to rapid growth. Mulches
in general also hold temperatures at consistent levels. In another study
by the same group, aphid and whitefly numbers were lower in plants
grown on reflective mulches. Apparently, insects are confused by the
amount of sunlight being reflected up by silver mulch, so they are less
likely to land on these plants. Silver mulch is also effective in weed
control and prevents snails from crawling across the shiny surface.
This hybrid metallized (on one side), polyethlene film is 20% stronger
than other typical low density films. Engineered to be applied
silver side up, for periods of 3 weeks depending on environmental
conditions.

Environmentally friendly Avenger Weed Killer is a citrus
oil-based herbicide designed to meet the demands and
needs of gardeners looking for an alternative to synthetic

Weed Flamers
Once a popular technique, “weed flaming” is being revived, with excellent results, for
nontoxic weed control in home gardens as well as commercial row crops, orchards,
and vineyards. Organic growers are excited about flaming because in many cases it
works as well as herbicides, is amazingly cost and labor effective, can be done when
fields are too wet to cultivate and does not bring dormant weed seeds to the surface.
Flaming correctly, it uses the searing heat of a specially designed propane burner to quickly “boil” the water in the cells of the
plant. This causes the cell walls to burst. This is usually accomplished in under 2 seconds, without injury to your crop. Weeds are
flamed 1–2 days before crop emergence. Flaming is highly effective on young, annual weeds. Perennial weeds with taproots or
woody stems may require reflaming. Use extreme caution to prevent injury or fire hazard. Not for use during hot, dry, summer
months due to increased fire danger.
Red Dragon Hand-Held Flamers
A great way to eliminate harmful herbicides where children or pets
could be exposed or to quickly de-ice or remove snow from pavement.
Easily assembled. Use for weeding row crops, perennials, trees and

The broadfork is a gardening tool that is widely used in Europe and is growing in popularity in the
US. Broadforks are excellent for breaking open compacted soils deeper than with a rototiller or a
spade. This tool will deeply aerate your soil, increase water percolation, and preserve soil structure. In
comparison, a rototiller pulverizes soil into a fine dust that compacts and hardens after the first rains.
The 12” tines are 2” longer than the main competitor’s broadforks. It is best to broadcast compost and
soil amendments prior to broadforking; as the amendments will trickle down into the cracks. This is
especially useful for rock phosphate, since phosphorus moves through the soil very slowly.
BUILT TO LAST:
1. The ½” tines are reinforced with ¼” welded steel gussets. These strengthened tines are much more
resistant to bending than most broadfork tines.
2. The tines are turned to a point instead of cut at an angle. This reduces resistance.

Sprayers have a wide variety of purposes in the organic garden and
orchard throughout the year. Remember to run water through your
sprayer after use to clean the fine mist nozzles and prevent clogging.
Winter
When fruit trees are dormant, it is common practice to spray trees
with an organic dormant oil to smother pests and a fungicide to
prevent disease next year.
Spring
When seedlings sprout, a fine mist spray is the perfect way to water
them delicately and apply organic Liquid Kelp & Liquid Fish.
Summer
Regular applications of compost tea, Liquid Kelp, or Liquid Fish can

Bamboo Nitrile Gloves
The shell is 100% bamboo fabric, a
cool, breathable, textile made from
one of nature’s most sustainable
resources. Bamboo is more
absorbent than cotton and contains

Atlas Extra Gloves
This new work glove is similar in construction
and materials to the Atlas Fit, but covers
more of the back of the fingers and the
knuckles. This provides knuckle protection
and waterproofing for heavier jobs. It still
allows some breathability to the back of the
hand, but keeps you from getting the upper
half of your fingers wet and muddy. Great for
transplanting, building compost piles, and any other wet
or muddy jobs. The palm and entire length of the fingers
are dipped in latex rubber. The lining is a cotton/poly blend.
