Paul has been in the animation business for thirteen years. He was influenced by Miyazaki’s early films, as well as the early Disney films, to pursue animation as a career. Paul studied at Academy of Art University in San Francisco, and was subsequently hired by Pixar in 1997 where he has worked on nine films, including The Incredibles and Ratatouille, and was an animation lead on Cars. He is currently working in pre-production on Pixar’s 2012 release, Brave. Paul currently resides in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife and young daughter. UP Paul will talk about how he came to work at Pixar, his experiences at the multi awardwinning animation studio and look in detail at the production pipeline. He will also talk specifically about his work on Up and then open up for questions from the audience. THE INCREDIBILES RATATOUILLE GUESTS BAF 5 4 BAF GUESTS Ray Harryhausen BAF 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award + Jason and the Argonauts Saturday 13 November 11.00am, Pictureville Cinema We are delighted to announce that master stop-motion puppet animator, Ray Harryhausen is the recipient of the BAF 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award. Unfortunately Ray is unable to join us at BAF to collect the award in person, but earlier in the summer John Landis presented the Award to Ray on our behalf. We captured the event on film and will be screening this prior to the classic Jason and the Argonauts, and during the BAF Awards ceremony on Saturday evening. Ray Harryhausen, who celebrated his 90th birthday in June, made his name by developing fantastic animated creatures based on legends and classical mythology. He created a unique body of work which combined stop-motion puppet animation seamlessly with live action cinematography through his innovative technique of Dynamation. His films captivated generations of audiences and his methods inspired present-day film-makers such as Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Peter Jackson and Nick Park. Jason and the Argonauts Dir. Don Chaffey / UK / 1963 / 103mins / (U) Todd Armstrong, Honor Blackman, Niall MacGinnis, Nigel Green, Laurence Naismith, Gary Raymond, John Cairney Classic Ray Harryhausen special effects bring to life the epic mythology behind Jason’s journey in the search for the Golden Fleece. Harryhausen’s memorable creations include the harpies, the fighting skeletons of King Pelias, the hydra, and Talos, the sinister gold giant. Earlier this year the Ray and Diana Harryhausen Foundation announced its intention to deposit the collection of Ray’s lifetime of work, which includes films such as The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958), Jason and the Argonauts (1963), The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1973) and Clash of the Titans (1981) at the National Media Museum in Bradford. Planning is under way to transfer the collection to the Museum, though it will be some time before the majority of it arrives in Bradford. The Museum and the Foundation are embarking on a fundraising campaign to secure the Collection. clash of the titans GUESTS BAF 7 6 BAF GUESTS Ray Harryhausen Filmography ONE MILLION YEARS BC CLASH OF THE TITANS 1935-1936 Cavebear Experimental Dinosaur Films 1937 The Jupiter Project (unrealised) 1938-1940 Evolution of the World (unrealised) 1940 to 1942 The Puppetoons [Madcap Models] Series of shorts (of which RH only worked on thirteen), produced by George Pal for Paramount Pictures. He created a character for the magazine, named “The Cat” (a label of the time for a dedicated jazz lover). Hundreds of those “Cat-toons” appeared in the magazine from 1945 to 1951. It was these cartoons that brought him to the attention of Steve Bosustow and John Hubley at the newly established UPA studio in Hollywood. Academy Award winning animator Gene Deitch, one of the grand old men of the Golden Age joins us for a screening of “For The Love of Prague”, a documentary about his life in Prague, followed by a screentalk with Professor Paul Wells and an opportunity for questions from the audience. Eugene Merril Deitch was born August 8 1924 in Chicago, Illinois, raised in Hollywood, California, and educated there. Between the ages of 8 and 16, he published by mimeograph a little monthly magazine titled “The Hollywood Star-News”. But his main ambition was to make animated cartoons, and he was constantly experimenting with home-made and toy film projectors. With the encouragement of an art teacher at Venice Junior High School, he made his first animated cartoon film at the age of 13. After graduation from high school in 1942, he was drafted into the United States Air Force. Upon his return to civilian life at the end of WW2, he worked as a technical illustrator at the North American Aviation and Lockheed Aircraft factories, as an artist for a local Los Angeles advertising agency, and as assistant to the Art Director at CBS Radio in Hollywood. In 1946 he started as an apprentice production designer and layout artist working at UPA studios based in Hollywood. After the magazine folded, the drawings became collectors’ items. Over 50 years later, in 2003, all of Gene’s artwork for The Record Changer magazine was collected in a large coffee-table book, titled, The Cat On A Hot Thin Groove, published by Fantagraphic Books, of Seattle, Washington. At UPA, in the mid-1940s, under the tutelage of John Hubley and Bill Hurtz, he advanced as an assistant production designer on the Fox and Crow and Mister Magoo cartoon series for Columbia Pictures. In 1949 he received a surprise offer from the Jam Handy Organization, (JHO), a large Detroit film production company, where he had a chance to spread his own wings. He directed his first film at JHO, “Building Friends For Business” and soon became head of the JHO animation department, producing many industrial and commercial films. After two years at Jam Handy, UPA called him back and sent him to New York, where he became Creative Director of the newly established UPA-New York studio, and won the New York Art Director’s Club gold medals for his pioneer TV commercials with Saul Steinberg, and for the famous Bert & Harry Piels beer commercials. Deitch was also responsible for animating the original NBC colour peacock. His animated UPA TV commercials were the first ever shown at the New York Museum of Modern Art; an entire month of screenings in 1954, which also included a daily screen at MOMA of a film recording of the nationwide CBS-TV show, “Let’s Take A Trip,“ on which Deitch guided the camera on a tour of the studio. He also wrote and directed the cartoon “Howdy Ddoody and His Magic Hat” (1952), and Pump Trouble (1952) for The American Heart Association. Simultaneously, he was given a contract by United Features Syndicate for his daily and Sunday comic strip, “Terr’ble Thompson!” which he was only able to maintain for a year, due to the increasing demands of his animation work. However, a few years later Terr’ble Thompson was morphed into Tom Terrific!” which he created and directed at CBS-Terrytoons. In 1956 CBS had purchased the Terrytoons animation studio and hired Gene Deitch as its Creative Director. Deitch brought in new talent such as Jules Feiffer, Eli Bauer, R.O. Blechman, Tod Dockstader, Ray Favata, Ralph Bakshi, Al Kouzel, Ernest Pintoff and others. His vision was to re-invent the studio, to create a Terrytoons “renaissance”. Under his supervision and direction, the studio created a number of innovative cartoon characters such as John Doormat, Clint Clobber, Foofle, Silly Sidney the Elephant, and Gaston Le Crayon. Deitch earned his first Oscar nomination for “Sidney’s Family Tree”(1958). He personally created and directed the Tom Terrific series for the CBS Captain Kangaroo show. Tom Terrific, with Mighty Manfred the Wonder Dog, was the very first animated serial for American network television. Gene is especially proud that the name “Tom Terrific“ has entered the language, and that TV Guide, in their 50th anniversary issue, named Tom Terrific as one of the “50 Greatest TV Cartoon Characters of All Time!” In 1958 he left Terrytoons to set up his own studio in New York, Gene Deitch Associates, Inc. which was immediately successful in the production of TV commercials, but less so in the attempt to get back into entertainment productions. He could not find funding for the projects he was interested in, such as Munro, Jules Feiffer’s story of a 4-year old boy mistakenly drafted into the United States Army. A year later, with the financial backing of William L. Snyder, Gene Deitch was promised he could produce Munro and other films he was interested in. However, the condition for the financing was that Deitch would have to move to Prague, Czechoslovakia to direct animated versions of children’s picture books for Snyder’s Rembrandt Films in a Prague unit of the Czechoslovak state-run Bratri v triku animation studios. Deitch flew to Prague in October 1959, planning to stay only 10 days, but soon realized that there was an opportunity there to make the entertainment and children’s films he could not get funding for in New York. He entered into a 7 year directing contract with Snyder, which resulted in a long list of TV serial and theatrical cartoon films, such as, Anatole, Samson Scrap & Delilah, and Munro. In 1960 “Munro” won the Hollywood Academy Oscar. From 1961 to 1968 Deitch and the Prague studio made 200 animated films for MGM, Paramount Pictures and King Features, including 13 episodes of Tom & Jerry (196061), 26 episodes of Popeye (1961-62), and 52 episodes of Krazy Kat (1962-63). In 1962, Gene Deitch created several films called the Self Help Series. GUESTS BAF 11 10 BAF GUESTS Gene Deitch continued... Thursday 11 November 4.30pm, Pictureville Cinema Two of these were based on books, and all were narrated by Arthur Treacher. The series began with “Self Defense...For Cowards” (1962), which was nominated for another Oscar. The film proved so successful that three more were made, as a series, including “How To Win On The Thruway”, “The Girl-Watcher’s Guide”, and “How To Avoid Friendship“ (1964), which was also nominated for an Oscar. In 1964, Deitch created Nudnik, redeveloped from his Terrytoons “Foofle” character. The series was released by Paramount, 1963-67, and the first Nudnik film was also nominated for an Oscar. In 1968 he made a film directly for the Czechs, “The Giants,“ which won the Grand Prize at San Sebastian, Spain, and also at Columbus, Ohio USA, but the film was promptly banned by the Czechoslovak communist government as being “objectivist.” However, it continued to be distributed by Weston Woods as part of their SIM (Stimulating/Informative/Motivating) catalogue. Nine short ironic films featuring “Mr Koumal” were also produced and became a part of the SIM catalogue, along with a liveaction short, “Mime Over Matter”, featuring the Ladislav Fialka Czech pantomime company, and a half-hour live-action dramatic film, “Zlateh The Goat,” from a story by Isaac Bashevis Singer, and inspired by illustrations by Maurice Sendak. At this time, after the Soviet led invasion of Czechoslovakia, Willian Snyder ceased production in Prague, and Deitch began what was to become, by the year 2004, a 35-year and continuing relationship with the Connecticut children’s film producer, Weston Woods Studios, inc., (now a subsidiary of Scholastic Publishers),who specialize in the animation film adaption of leading, high quality chidren’s picture books. As of this year 2010, he is continuing production of children’s picture book adaptations for Weston Woods. Among the long list of prize-winning films Deitch has adapted and directed for Weston Woods are Maurice Sendak’s classic,“Where The Wild Things Are” (1970), and “In The Night Kitchen”. Others include “Drummer Hoff” by Ed Emberley (1969); “The Happy Owls” from a book by the Swiss artist, Celestino Piatti; Tomi Ungerer’s story, “The Beast of Monsieur Racine” (1971); “The Three Robbers” (1972); “Changes, Changes” (1973); “Rosie’s Walk” (1970); “Patrick” by Quentin Blake; “A Story-A Story” (1972); “A Picture For Harold’s Room” (1973), “Harold’s Fairy Tale” (1974); “Charlie Needs a Cloak” (1977); “Stregna Nonna” (1978); “Leopold, The See-Through Crumbpicker,” “Smile For Auntie” (1978); “Teeny-Tiny and The Witch-Woman” a Turkish tale, Tomi Ungerer’s “The Hat” (1979); and “Moon Man” (1981); “Wings - A Story Of Two Chickens”, from a book by James Marshall, “The Emperor’s New Clothes”, “A Pig’s Wedding” from a book by German author Helme Heine, “A Story, A Story” and “Why Mosquitoes Buzz In Peoples Ears” two African legends, William Steig’s “Sylvester and The Magic Pebble” (1986), two films from books by Deitch’s old colleague Jules Feiffer “Bark, George” (2003) and “I Lost My Bear” (2004) and most recently “Diary of a Worm, Diary of A Spider and Diary of A Fly from books by Doreen Cronin. And “Emily’s First 100 Days of School” and “Voyage To The Bunny Planet”, two long films from books by Rosemary Wells. Deitch also filmed a documentary for Weston Woods in 1977, “Gene Deitch: The Picture Book Animated” in which he described graphically the painstaking process of animating a picture book. Gene also authored his own children‘s book, “A Visit From A Turtle” which was published in 8 languages. In 1974 Deitch created a TV series for the Dutch producer Frank Fehmers, originally called, “Zip, Zok & The Baron”, but produced as “The Bluffers,” first as a life-puppet film, but later animated. He wrote the lyrics for 40 songs for the project, collaborating with the young Dutch musician, Eric Jan Harmsen. Now, in 2010, Zip, Zok is being developed as a video game. In between films for Weston Woods, Gene took up several projects for another Dutch producer Palm Plus Multimedia, of Hilversum, The Netherlands, including 53 short films adapted from books by Dick Bruna, creator of the bunny character “Miffy”. Also for Palm Plus, he supervised the production of 26 episodes of a serial created by the Danish animator Borge Ring, called “Anton” and two longer films adapted from stories by the Dutch cartoonist, Jan Kruis, “Jack, Jackie and The Juniors ”and “The Cow Who Fell In The Canal”. He also wrote nearly 80 Miffy stories for Palm Plus, which were produced with puppet animation in Holland. Now in production is a series of graphic films for Japanese TV, adapted from classical music pieces, under the series title “DO-RE-DO”. After the Czech Velvet Revolution of 1989, and the establishment of a democratic Czech Republic, Gene was able to write his memoirs of being the only free American to have lived in communist Czechoslovakia continuously for 30 years. His book, For The Love of Prague is now in its fifth expanded edition, and sold mainly in Prague bookshops for tourists. (Also available on the internet.) Gene’s wife, Zdenka Deitchova, manager of the Prague animation studio Bratri v triku has produced all of his films since his arrival in Prague in 1959. Gene is the father of Kim Deitch, the famous creator of comic novels. Gene Deitch’s cartoon work has received many honours over the years, earning one Academy Award (Munro) and five Oscar nominations. In 1960 he was accepted as a full voting member of the Hollywood Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. Has also won the New York Art Directors Club gold medal twice, and over 100 other international film festival prizes. In February, 2004, he was presented with an animation “Annie” from ASIFA Hollywood: “The Winsor McCay Award for his Lifetime Contribution to The Art of Animation.” He has so far won four “Lifetime Achievement Awards, but says he is still trying to achieve! Even in his 86th year, retirement is still not an option! Goodbye Mr Christie Dir. Phil Mulloy, UK, 2010, 78mins The Christies live in Wellington Green, a picturesque English village with a church, a pond and a cricket pitch. Outwardly Mr Christie is a perfect gentleman. Inwardly he is a selfish arrogant monster. When the whole world sees him on television having sex with a French sailor, his life is changed forever. Prepare to be shocked. This film will take you from the leafy garden suburbs to hell and beyond. GUESTS BAF 17 16 BAF GUESTS Clare Kitson Channel 4: A Caring Eye Introduction to A Caring Eye Introduction to The Documentary Way Book signing Friday 12 Nov at 1.30pm in the Museum bookshop Friday 12 November 12noon Pictureville Cinema CLARE KITSON GO WEST YOUNG MAN Clare Kitson organised animation programmes at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in the early 70s and in 1978 became programme officer for the National Film Theatre in London. In 1989 she joined Channel 4, where she commissioned many award-winning animated films and supported schemes to encourage innovation and to give young animators their first professional opportunity. She left Channel 4 in September 1999 and completed the initial stage of research into Tale of Tales in the context of a readership at the Animation Research Centre of the University for the Creative Arts. Yuri Norstein and Tale of Tales: An Animator’s Journey was published in June 2005, and her subsequent book, British Animation: The Channel 4 Factor, appeared in November 2008. In 1999 she was awarded the ASIFA Special Award for her contribution to British animation and in 2008 she received the Animafest Zagreb award for outstanding achievement in animation theory. Clare joins us to introduce two programmes Channel 4: A Caring Eye and Channel 4: The Documentary Way and to take part in a signing of her book, British Animation: The Channel 4 Factor on Friday 12 November at 1.30pm in the Museum bookshop. GOING EQUIPPED DEADSY Channel 4: A Caring Eye Channel 4 was set up, in 1981, by an Act of Parliament which incorporated a very special set of instructions. The programming was to be innovative, challenging and appealing to audiences hitherto not well served by television. While many programmes were entertaining, entertainment was never the prime motive. Issues, big and small, were tackled by all departments, animation being no exception. The proposals coming into the Channel’s animation department approached their themes from a variety of original angles, sometimes purely factual (documentaries feature in the other Channel 4 programme at this year’s BAF), frequently comedy (Joanna Quinn’s take on feminism was seen in its full glory at the last BAF) and from a range of other subjective viewpoints for which animation is particularly apt. Throughout the Channel’s history, concerns changed and so did the films. In the mid-eighties the nuclear threat was uppermost in people’s minds and C4 did not flinch from the subject – despite it being a potential turn-off for television audiences. As well as Jimmy Murakami’s feature When the Wind Blows (based on Raymond Briggs), it commissioned a good few shorts, including the two by David Anderson, Dreamless Sleep and DAD’s DEAD THE VICTOR Deadsy, which are included in this programme, the latter holocaust parable being scripted and narrated by Russell Hoban. More general, domestic issues occur throughout, from Peter Lord’s Going Equipped (a serious piece about a young criminal, made before Aardman gravitated definitively towards comedy), to Chris Shepherd’s Dad’s Dead, a drama set in an alltoo-real urban milieu, via Karen Kelly’s painterly expression of a modern curse, Stressed. Global issues also preoccupied our animators, with Derek Hayes and Phil Austin’s The Victor reflecting on a news story from the 70s about the US army using experimental drugs on their soldiers, Keith Piper taking the long view on race relations in Go West Young Man and Ali Taylor’s Puleng visualising her concerns regarding poverty in the developing world. When Jan Švankmajer submitted his proposal for Food (1992), he told us it referred to an eating disorder he had suffered as a child – a problem we are familiar with nowadays. Yet we could not help but see a political allegory in all that competitive guzzling. Ruth Lingford tackled a whole range of sensitive issues in Pleasures of War (made in collaboration with writer and theologian Sara Maitland). Does Israel’s victimhood justify acts of aggression? Do soldiers get a high out of killing people? Are women potentially as violent as men? PULENG Personal points of view do of course make it on to our television screens in longer, non-animated form, but usually couched in much dialogue and discussion. Animation gets straight to the point: in a short time it can deploy a range of visual and narrative techniques to make us really think. John and Faith Hubley were perhaps the first to use authentic recorded dialogue, in their films documenting the fantasies of their children at play. In this country, BBC Bristol commissioned the Animated Conversations (1979), which included two films by Peter Lord and David Sproxton, using that same technique. When Channel 4 was set up, its first Chief Executive was inspired by these, and commissioned a whole series from Aardman (including On Probation), intended to grace the Channel’s first week on air (but in the event marking its first anniversary). From the outset Channel 4, with its remit to challenge and to attract a thinking audience, commissioned a great deal of factual material; but commissioning editors were surprised and intrigued when animators started submitting documentary proposals. They came in a wide variety of forms. Marjut Rimminen’s Some Protection was part of a series on women and A IS FOR AUTISM the law and was not originally intended as a documentary but an informed opinion piece. But one research interview was so compelling that the film finally came to revolve around that particular woman’s interview and her life. Tim Webb’s A Is for Autism is a unique collaboration between two professional animators and a group of autistic people, who describe and draw their own childhood experiences when growing up with this disability, while Paul Vester’s Abductees is about a group of people who believe they have been abducted by aliens. Based on their testimony, some of which was recorded under hypnosis, and their sketches, a different animator was assigned to visualise the story of each of the abductees. The 1998 Mixed Feelings series, however, approaches the documentary form differently. The Channel 4 education department was looking for a lowbudget series as part of a season marking the 30th anniversary of legalised abortion in the UK and commissioned four interviews with people about their differing experiences of, and consequent feelings about, the subject. Filmed by two animators, the interviews were then overlaid with snatches of animation and video trickery to try to penetrate the emotions expressed. In more recent times the animation department has not been in a position to commission the rather costly works of the early days, but the Animate scheme, in conjunction with the Arts Council, has more or less single-handedly carried on the tradition with a large number of low-budget experimental documentaries, four of which are included here. Jonathan Hodgson’s Camouflage explores the fertile territory (for animation) of mental illness; Sarah Cox’s Dear Nelson follows the course of a love affair via Simone de Beauvoir’s letters to Nelson Algren; the Quay brothers visit the Wellcome Trust’s extraordinary collection of medical exhibits in The Phantom Museum; while Emily Richardson’s Cobra Mist is a strongly atmospheric account of the now disused site where atomic weapons were once developed. Chico is a young piano player with big dreams. Rita is a beautiful singer with an extraordinary voice. Music and romantic desire unites them, but their journey - in the tradition of the Latin ballad, the bolero - brings heartache and torment. From Havana to New York, Paris, Hollywood and Las Vegas, two passionate individuals battle impossible odds to unite in music and love. Oscar-winning director Fernando Trueba (Belle Epoque) met acclaimed designer and artist Javier Mariscal ten years ago when he asked him to create a poster for his Latin jazz documentary Calle 54. So began a fruitful collaboration that saw Mariscal design all the artwork for Trueba’s Calle 54 Records, make animated pop promos for the label, and together create a jazz-music restaurant in Madrid. The idea to make an animated feature film emerged out of one of those pop promos, La Negra Tomasa by Cuban musician Compay Segundo. Print courtesy of CinemaNX. Chico and Rita will be preceded by a screening of Bradford to Bollywood, which is a joint UKIERI project between Bradford College students and Whistling Woods International students. Melanie Hani Melanie believes that Animation in a therapeutic context can stimulate positive responses regarding learning, general attitude, behaviour, encourage physical and mental social interaction and improve physical and mental skills overall. During her talk, Melanie will journey through her life experiences using animation as a social, educational and healing tool, discussing the highs, the lows, the progress, and developments that have occurred as a result of each project undertaken. She will look at four areas; working with special needs education, working in a deprived community, the severely bereaved and her most recent area of research – using animation as a tool to tackle attachment disorders, focusing on her experiences working in a Slovakian Orphanage. She will highlight how her work has now moved on from “therapy” and from Melanie being a therapist to what she calls Healing and Education using Animation Remedial Techniques (Heart), and Melanie’s current role as a facilitator. Tom Madge Tom will talk about how creative practice in animation can be grown to promote the health of young people with cancer. His focus is on the patients as young people who are suffering not only because of their medical condition but from a dis-connection from opportunities to explore their talents and creative instincts. Tom will highlight in his talk how flexibility in approach and opportunity in animation methods offers them the chance to develop and capitalise on ideas. Tom aims to help them see the value in small seeds of interest, encouraging them through a process of growing their creations gradually, feeling their way to an outcome rather than following a fixed plan. Seeing this journey through is a very absorbing process and can tap into reserves of motivation and enthusiasm that may have been suppressed by a long stay on the ward. Engaging and working with young people who are being treated for cancer can be a physically and mentally challenging for the patient and the animator in residence. However Tom will tackle in his talk how he overcomes these barriers. Yvonne Eckersley Yvonne Eckersley will talk about her belief in the potential of autobiographical animation as a tool for examining, evaluating and ultimately communicating an individual’s experience to an audience – developed out of her own practice and by studying established practitioners who choose to work in a similar way. She will compare her own experience in producing animation to what she has observed from the fieldwork with Voice and show some of the films produced with Voice and “Brush The Teddy’s Toes”. special events BAF 29 28 BAF special events Workshops ToonHead Challenge Motion Capture: Wed 10 Nov 10.30am, Chesham Building, University of Bradford Character Design: Thurs 11 Nov 11.00am, Action Zone 1 Life Drawing: Fri 12 Nov 4.00pm, On Location Scriptwriting: Sat 13 Nov 12.30pm, On Location Thursday 11 November 8.00pm Museum Café Alan Gilbey The Great ToonHead Challenge Thursday 11 November 8.00pm Museum Café Can you name ALL of the firemen in Trumpton? Bradford Animation Festival hosts this 50th anniversary celebration of ASIFA with the UK premiere of “Happy Anniversary” animated by young people around the world and the preview world premiere of “Red”. The ASIFA (International Animated Film Association) Workshop Group is a global movement represented in 23 countries and on three continents. Every year a worldwide animation project takes place, composed of several regional young people’s workshops. ASIFA aims to promote animation art globally and attain mutual understanding through animation. I HAVE A DREAM In August 2010 six families from Bradford with children aged 8-12 took part in a week long project to make a two minute film starting and ending with a red dot. Using abstract art and the work of pioneering abstract animators including Norman McLaren as inspiration the group explored rhythm, colour and shape in their animation. Their film, Red will be edited together with other films made in ASIFA workshops over the globe; all starting and ending with the same red circle. The group worked with professional animator David Bunting who has previously storyboarded for Shaun the Sheep and animated on The Tigger Movie. The project is a partnership between the National Media Museum and Education Bradford’s Family Learning Team. The film’s soundtrack was recorded at Factory St. Studios, Bradford with the help of producer Darren Ibbotson. “Happy Anniversary” features I have a Dream which was made last year at the National Media Museum, which has been screened at Annecy Animation festival and at Hiroshima Animation Festival. He should be hard at work defending the fort, but is more interested in working on a beautiful illuminated holy book written in magically glowing ink. This luscious animation is perfect for the under nines. The Illusionist Dir. Sylvain Chomet / GB, France / 2010 83mins (PG) Fed up with performing to two old ladies in a dusty old theatre, a Parisian magician takes the chance to travel to Edinburgh to try his luck there. On the way he makes unlikely friendships, and picks up a companion who believes that his magic is the real thing. This gorgeous, old fashioned and almost wordless animation is fine family entertainment, a love letter both to Edinburgh and to film itself. It’s perhaps proof that some elements of cinema are timeless.
