Second Sunday of Easter (Divine Mercy Sunday)
April 27, 2014
From the Desk of Jim Clauer, Director of Worship
Greetings,
What an incredible Holy Week and Easter celebration we had last weekend. The music was
great. The church was wonderfully decorated. Your participation was incredible. But great
liturgies don't just happen. It takes so many people working a lot of hours behind the scenes to
make the celebrations at St. John of the Cross what they are. So it is important that the hard
work of so many dedicated people is recognized.
Thanks also to the talented Art & Environment people, led by parishioner Heidi Drescher,
who had to decorate, set-up, take down, and decorate again for all the different liturgies of
Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday in both the Church and the
school. They spent many hours planning, executing, and helping out behind the scenes so the
liturgies went as well as they did. Thank you for creating such wonderful spaces to help us
prayerfully reflect on the mysteries we celebrated.
The liturgies could not happen without all the liturgical ministers who give of their time and
talent to help us celebrate. To all the lectors, extraordinary ministers of communion, ushers,
sacristans and altar servers a big THANK YOU! Your assistance and help was invaluable. A
special thank you to John Kravcik who coordinates the ushers, and Rich Bornhoff for
coordinating the sacristans.
To Jessica Koch, Director of Music, and our musicians, choir, and cantors: a huge thank-you
for the uplifting and inspiring music which set just the right tone for each of our liturgies. Thank
you for helping us to "pray twice" by leading us in singing. Also helping out Jessica was Ann
Bourjaily-Maney who works with our children and teens.
On Good Friday this year, we had our Crossroads teens do a Living Stations of the Cross. It
was a beautiful and prayerful experience. Thank you to the teens who dedicated their time,
and Katie Hayes and Ann Hultgren for leading them.
A huge thank you to our Facilities Manager, Frank DiPompeo, and our dedicated
maintenance staff who helped with setup in the church, school and assisted behind the
scenes, especially Andy Mola who also assisted Heidi and her team.
I hope I haven't overlooked anyone. If you were one of the silent helpers who assisted in any
way that may have gone unnoticed--please accept my deepest thanks. It is only through
everyone doing their part and helping out in whatever way they can that St. John of the Cross
is the great parish that it is.
God Bless,
Jim Clauer
Director of Worship
Today is Divine Mercy Sunday
In the Jubilee Year 2000, Pope John Paul II proclaimed that from that year forward the Second Sunday of
Easter would be celebrated as Divine Mercy Sunday. This was proclaimed at the Canonization Mass of St.
Faustina Kawalska, who worked throughout her life to make all aware of the merciful love of God. St.
Faustina (1905–1938) was born and raised in Poland. Following a vocation to religious life, she was
accepted by the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy. As a member of the Congregation, she
worked as a cook, gardener, and porter. In her spiritual life, her contemplation on the Mercy of God led her
to develop a childlike trust in God and deep love for her neighbor.

Catholic Charities
The Easter Season
The Annual Collection for Catholic Charities
is on May 11th.
May, 2014
Dear Friends in Christ,
Mother’s Day is a day to honor the special
women—mothers, grandmothers, aunts, friends—
who have fed, nurtured, loved and shaped us into the
people we are today. It is through their unconditional
love that we begin to understand the depth of
Christ’s love for us, and his command to share that
love with one another.
Mother’s Day is therefore an appropriate day to
support a critical mission of the Church: the care of
the poor and vulnerable. By participating in the
Catholic Charities Mother’s Day Collection, each
one of us has the opportunity to share Christ’s love
with those who are hungry, homeless, hurting and in
need of help. We are greatly blessed in the
Archdiocese of Chicago to have an extraordinary
social-service agency like Catholic Charities to help
us fulfill Jesus’ command to care for those in need.
As we share our resources with the poor and
vulnerable, we not only allow God to bless others
through us, but we are blessed as well. The poor
teach us the virtues of tolerance, meekness and
patience. God comes to us cloaked in poverty. It is
through our connection to the poor that we encounter
the suffering Christ and so humble ourselves and
truly open our hearts to his tremendous grace and
mercy.
I thank you for your past support, and I invite you
to again join me in making a contribution to the
Catholic Charities Mother’s Day Collection. Your
gift will help serve more than one million people of
all ages, races and religions in Cook and Lake
Counties, including one out of every three citizens of
the City of Chicago.
May God bless you and your families. You and
those you love are in my prayers; please keep me in
yours.
The Easter
season – beginning
on Easter
Sunday and
continuing for 50
days – is an
opportunity for us to
cultivate a spirit that
defines who we are
as Christians. So
what does living
the spirit of the
Easter season mean in practical terms? Here are
three concrete suggestions.
Live with Joy
Joy is a deep-down gladness that cannot be taken
away, even in the midst of sorrow. The Passion and
Resurrection of Jesus teach us that suffering is
transformed through faith in the Risen Christ. With
this faith, we are able to hold on to an enduring
sense of joy even in the midst of the sadness we
experience from the loss of a loved one, a failure to
achieve an important goal, or a setback during
recovery from an illness.
Live without Fear
The Resurrection teaches us that God can
overcome anything, even death. When the Risen
Christ appears to the women at the tomb and later
to his disciples, his first words are “Do not be
afraid!” (Mt 28:5,10) These words speak to our
hearts, helping us cope with the fear from the loss
of a job, a serious illness, or a crumbling
relationship. Our faith allows us to trust that God
can overcome our most serious problems.
Live with New Eyes
Easter means to live with a sense of newness. Just
as the return of spring lifts our spirits and makes us
feel like the whole world is new, the Resurrection of
Jesus makes “all things new.” (Rev. 21:5) The
Easter spirit is a spirit of renewal that enables us to
show up at work with a positive attitude, to renew
relationships that have been taken for granted, and
to express appreciation and affection to those
closest to us. It means to see the world through
new eyes—God´s eyes.
We can use these 50 days to cultivate an Easter
spirit that enables us to be truly Christian:
embracing joy, living without fear, and seeing the
world again—as if for the first time. Loyola Press 2014.

RCIA
Following the reception of the sacraments of initiation at the Easter Vigil, the post baptismal formation and
education of our RCIA elect, who are now referred to as neophytes, joyfully continues over the coming
weeks.
This period of catechesis is called mystagogy. Mystagogia comes from a Greek word meaning a time of
entering into mystery. It is during this time that the newest members of our church learn what it means to be
disciples. Reflecting on their experiences at the Vigil, they continue to learn more about the Scriptures, the
Sacraments, and the teachings of the Catholic Church and will reflect on how they will serve Christ and help
in the Church's mission and outreach activities. (Look for more Triduum pictures next week!!)

Lifelong Formation: Thoughts on the Resurrection
Today’s Gospel Reading
The Gospels tell us that Jesus appeared to the
disciples on several occasions after they discovered
that his tomb was empty. Part of the mystery of
Jesus' Resurrection is that he appeared to his
disciples not as a spirit but in bodily form. The bodily
form was not one that the disciples recognized
though. In John's Gospel, Mary of Magdala does not
recognize that the figure standing before her is Jesus
until he speaks to her. In Luke's Gospel the disciples
who meet Jesus on the road to Emmaus do not
recognize him until he breaks bread with them. The
resurrected Jesus had a physical presence, but the
disciples couldn't recognize Jesus unless he allowed
them to. His resurrected body, nonetheless, showed
the marks of his crucifixion.
From readings such as today's Gospel, we also
see that in his resurrected body, Jesus seems to be
free of physical constraints. He appears to the
disciples despite the fact that the doors were locked.
Jesus greets his disciples with the gift of peace and
the gift of the Holy Spirit. In doing so, Jesus
commissions his disciples to continue the work that
he has begun: “As the Father has sent me, so I send
you.” During the meeting, Jesus also shows the
integral connection between forgiveness of sins and
the gift of the Holy Spirit.
The story of Thomas illustrates our Christian
experience today: We are called to believe without
seeing. In fact, all Christians after the first witnesses
have been called to believe without seeing.
Thomas's doubt is hardly surprising; the news of
Jesus' appearance was incredible to the disciples
who had seen him crucified and buried. Thomas's
human nature compelled him to want hard evidence
that the Jesus who appeared to the disciples after his
death was indeed the same Jesus who had been
crucified. Thomas is given the opportunity to act on
that desire. He is our witness that Jesus is really
risen.
Our faith is based on the witness of the Church that
has preceded us, beginning with Thomas and the
first disciples. Through Baptism we receive the same
Holy Spirit that Jesus brought to the first disciples.
We are among those who are “blessed” because we
believe without having seen.

Wednesday
In the Gospels we do not find Sunday as a day for
assembling the followers of Jesus, but we discover
in all four Gospels that the Resurrection took place
on a Sunday. (SeeMatthew 28:1-7, Mark 16:18, Luke 24:1-8, and John 20:1-18.) In addition to
being the day on which Jesus had been raised
from the dead, the first day of the week was also
the day on which Jesus appeared to the disciples
after the Resurrection....
We cannot, on the one hand, think of the
Resurrection as merely an event in the life of the
historical Jesus. That is wholly true, yet the
Resurrection continues in the life of the Church.
We experience the Resurrection when we
celebrate the initiation of new members into our
communities at the Easter Vigil. We experience
the Resurrection when we celebrate the baptism
of infants. We experience the Resurrection
whenever we celebrate the sacraments. And we
experience the Resurrection whenever we bond
with those we love because they are gifts of God.
Yet these experiences are only one side of the
coin.
The Resurrection also was part of the experience
of Jesus, the Son of God who shared his human
life with us by his incarnation. And so the
Resurrection also was part of the experience of
the paschal mystery in the life of Jesus two
millennia ago. That is the other side of the coin
that is the Christian faith.

The Resurrection—indeed the whole of the

merely commemorate. It is part of our lives today,
part of the life of the Church since the days of the
community that was formed around Jesus of
Nazareth, continuing and being built up in love as

Prayer
Keep your momentum from Lent going….
Continue to explore Scripture and deepen your relationship with Christ through Little White Books. Daily
reflections for the Easter Season (based on the Resurrection narrative according to Matthew) provide an
excellent basis for daily prayer. The reflections run through Pentecost Sunday, June 8th.
Pick up your Little White Book in the parish center office or the back of church this weekend. A free will
offering of $1 is suggested to cover the cost.
Richard Rohr Meditation
The five positive messages of initiation, which I call “the common wonderful,” are a cosmic egg of meaning that will
hold you, help you grow, and give you ongoing new birth and beginnings (i.e., resurrection). By cosmic egg, I mean your
underlying worldview, your life matrix, and your energy field—that keeps you motivated each day. If it is true then it must
be accessible from all directions, which is why I call it cosmic, and because it is life-giving, I call it an egg. It holds you
together in a shell of meaning.
Our cosmic egg operates largely subliminally, but very powerfully. It is more caught than taught. I find these messages
in Jesus’ teaching, but there are similar messages in all the great traditions, especially from the Islamic mystics, the
Hasidic Jews, and the Hindu holy men and women.
The first message of the common wonderful: It is true that life is hard, and it is also true, as Jesus said, that “My yoke
is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:30).
Enlightened people invariably describe the spiritual experience of God as restful, peaceful, delightful, and even
ecstatic. Seek joy in God and peace within yourself; seek to rest in the good, the true, and the beautiful. It will be the only
resting place that will also allow you to hear and bear the darkness.
Hard and soft, difficult and easy, pain and ecstasy do not eliminate one another, but actually allow each other. They
bow back and forth like dancers, although it is harder to bow to pain and to failure. You can bear the hardness of life and
see through failure if your soul is resting in a wonderful and comforting sweetness and softness. Religious people would
call this living in God.
Tell us what you think!
Each Advent and Lent we provide pocket sized books with daily reflections and prayers to help you
prepare more fully for Christmas and Easter. To provide a variety over the years, we have used
several different sources—Liturgical Press, and Sacred Space from the Irish Jesuits, Little Books
from the Diocese of Saginaw, Michigan.
From time to time parishioners stop to let us know how well the books have enriched their personal
prayer and preparation. To help us select books in the future, please take a moment to let us know
which books/publisher you prefer. Drop off this form at the parish center or in the collection basket at
Mass or use the parish website.
Rate each book on a scale of 1 (disliked; did not help my daily prayer) to 5 (liked very much; greatly helped me
pray). Circle your rating.

In today's Gospel, the Apostle Thomas personally
experiences this mercy of God. ... Thomas does not believe
it when the other Apostles tell him: "We have seen the
Lord." ... And how does Jesus react? With patience: Jesus
does not abandon Thomas in his stubborn unbelief ... He
does not close the door, He waits. And Thomas
acknowledges his own poverty, his little faith. "My Lord and
my God!": with this simple yet faith-filled invocation, he
responds to Jesus' patience. He lets himself be enveloped
by Divine Mercy; he sees it before his eyes, in the wounds of
Christ's hands and feet and in His open side, and he
discovers trust. ~ Pope Francis
Thank You for Your Rice Bowl Donations
Alleluia!
During the six weeks of Lent, our parish community has prayed, fasted and given alms through the Catholic
Relief Services Rice Bowl Program with a special focus on the poorest members of our global community.
Our lives were touched by stories from Kenya, Guatemala, the Philippines, Malawi, Haiti, and the United
States. Through our Lenten prayers and donations, we have touched the lives of millions of people served by
Catholic Relief Services, our representative to the poorest communities in the world.
Rice Bowls are still being collected at the parish center office. So far our parish has donated over $7,500, of
which 65% goes to support CRS’ programs around the world. The remaining 35% stays here in the
Archdiocese of Chicago to alleviate hunger and poverty in our own communities through CRS Rice Bowl
Grants. Thank you for your generosity.

Family Connection
Many of us can relate to Thomas's response to the
news that the disciples had seen Jesus. We want
to see for ourselves too, but we grow in faith,
trusting the experience and knowledge of others.
Many of us have heard the saying “Seeing is
believing.” As your family gathers, take some time
to consider what that saying means. What are
some things we believe because we see them? Is
there anything we believe without seeing? Today's
Gospel reminds us that faith sometimes asks us to
believe things we cannot see with our eyes. Read
today's Gospel, John 19:19-31, with your family.
Think about Thomas's response to the reports
about the risen Lord. Is Thomas's doubt
reasonable? How does Jesus respond to
Thomas? Jesus grants Thomas the evidence that
Thomas needs to believe, but Jesus also affirms
the faith of those who will be called upon to
believe without first-hand experience. We are
among those whom Jesus calls blessed. Discuss
with your family the basis of each member's faith
in Jesus—the witness of the first disciples, the
Gospels, the continuing activity of the Holy Spirit,
the community of the Church. Pray together that
your faith in Jesus will be strong. Pray an act of
faith together. Loyola Press 2014

Supporting Precious Blood Ministry
At Precious Blood Ministry of Reconciliation, the
opportunity for art work is a powerful means of
expression as evidenced by the "Paper Bag
Crucifix" created by one of the teens. PBMR offers
a variety of ways to restore hope, healing and
reconciliation to the young people from the Back of
the Yards neighborhood of Chicago who are
involved in the juvenile justice system of Cook
County. Through the use of our gold envelope
program, SJC parishioners support PBMR in their
work with at-risk young people. Your generosity is
needed and greatly appreciated.
Food Pantry Collection
During the month of April the food we collect in our
church narthex will be delivered to our neighboring
parish, St. Cletus, to distribute to needy families in
our area. Please remember to bring a can or two
with you to Mass.
Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good,
his love is everlasting.

Since spring has sprung, our second grade students
headed to the courtyard to begin their gardening
unit. Each year, the second graders cultivate the
garden in our courtyard and the last week of school
enjoy a lunch of the salad with the vegetables they
grew themselves.
Our early childhood teachers designed a beautiful
spiral bound cookbook with a
favorite recipe submitted by each of our 3 and 4
year old preschool families. Not only are the
children’s favorite recipes in the book, but also a
picture of each student opposite their recipe.
Don’t forget to ask grandmothers, aunts,
godmothers, and special friends if they’d
like to order a special cookbook.
The cookbooks will be ready
as a perfect Mother’s Day surprise!

During Holy Week, our third grade presented their
Resurrection egg stories to preschool, first grade,
second grade, and the fifth grade. The students
worked very hard writing and illustrating their
booklets to share, as well as putting together their
egg cartons. This is a memory our children will
cherish.

This month we had a variety of firsts! We took a bus
trip to our Vicariate youth rally, we performed the Live
Stations on Good Friday and we began discernment
meetings with our teen & adult board members.
Trying new things and stepping outside of our
comfort helps us all grow closer to our loving God
because we learn to trust and see how God carries us.
Kudos to all who lean on God!

God's mercy can make even the driest land become a garden, can
restore life to dry bones (cf. Ez 37:1-14). ... Let us be renewed by
God's mercy, let us be loved by Jesus, let us enable the power of his
love to transform our lives too; and let us become agents of this
mercy, channels through which God can water the earth, protect all
creation and make justice and peace flourish. ~ Pope Francis
