forward to being exposed to all kinds of exciting insights into the arts, history and
other adventures in learning. Every CLL course offers a great opportunity to
broaden one’s knowledge. Why has the course “Tell Me Something I Don’t Know”
been such a hit? Very simply, it is learning about interesting and sometimes not
very well known individuals and events that have had a significant impact in
shaping our nation and lives. Every semester can be a true adventure in learning.

CLL was founded by a group of local citizens who believed that many men and
women might welcome the opportunity for intellectual stimulation and the chance to
enhance their knowledge in many subjects of their choice. Knowledgeable
instructors who are authorities in their fields teach the classes.
MEMBERSHIP
We welcome adults of all ages and no special educational background is required.
Active discussion and interaction in class will be encouraged. A membership fee of
$40 allows you to attend as many courses as you wish. Some courses have class
size limits and some courses require additional book or material fees.

Calling all amblers! Spring Semester 2011 offers another program of
stimulating walks through gardens & woodlands. We will explore places of interest
and some old favorites.
Ambling Along is for those who enjoy being outdoors, but are not quite ready
to join the more ambitious Ramblers or Scramblers. Walks may be more than 3-4
hours due to travel time. Experienced walkers who know our area and are familiar
with many beautiful trails and gardens will lead all of the walks.

and difficulty by featuring two groups.
At the time of registration, you must select one of the following:
RAMBLERS … Will cover 3-4 miles at a moderate pace
SCRAMBLERS … Will cover 5-7 miles at a moderate to strenuous pace

Chuckle, giggle, guffaw or hee-haw we plan to pick up laughing where we left off after a
year’s laughter sabbatical. Once again it will be an open, interactive workshop of fun
and mirth with humorist Michael leading the way. He is appearing again out of the past
to stimulate your appreciation of humor, laughter and the entire well being that goes with
it. Come prepared to participate.
We will share humorous anecdotes, jokes and what other people around the world
laugh at. In between bouts of laughter we will have some serious discussions of what
we laugh at and why…..Female comedians vs. male comedians and what sets them
apart…Laughter as a survival tool….How comedy has changed over the years.

Great films of suspense directed by Alfred Hitchcock, “The Master of Suspense”, will
challenge you each week. Many of his thrillers have twist endings and thriller plots
featuring depictions of violence, murder and crime. The Daily Telegram (U.K.) said “…
he did more to shape modern cinema which would be utterly different without him. His
flair was for narrative, cruelly withholding crucial information from his characters and
from us and engaging in the emotions of the audience like no one else”. Are you ready
for the “Master of Suspense” and are you able to identify Alfred’s cameo visits in these
films????

FUN OF WATERCOLORS

Free and loose or tightly controlled. Wet into wet or detailed and dry brush. Which
describes your approach to this popular medium? Each student is encouraged to do his
or her own thing with as much individual supervision as class size permits.
Dig out those paints that have been lying around since --- (?); or start off with a
brand new palette. Paint your house; the dog; or, weather permitting, the whole world
outside. It’s worth trying and you will surprise yourself with your productions and
progress.
Beginners are most welcome. Did it once, but feel rusty or unsure, or just need a
specific time and place to paint? Come, try us! In addition, as a class participant you can
use the extensive collection of “How to” and watercolor books in the Library.
Beginners should come to the 1st class with supplies and be prepared to
paint. A list of start-up supplies will be available at the Library after February 7.
Amy Leonard, a Kinnelon resident, is an accomplished artist with a wide range of
interests in subject matter in both watercolor and pen and ink. She has won numerous
awards and has been featured in a number of juried shows.
Allen Nelson is a watercolorist / oil painter and a Boonton Twsp. resident, with a
special interest in landscapes. He was formerly an instructor with the Gallery Group and
has won awards in several regional shows.

Beginners as well as experienced artists will be able to start painting the first day of
class. You will benefit from the individual attention and advice of Allen Nelson and Linda
Farmer as they encourage you to develop your talents. No previous experience is necessary,
just the desire to create and enjoy. For new students a list of start-up supplies will be
available at the Library after February 7.
Allen Nelson is a watercolorist/oil painter and a Boonton Twsp. resident with a special
interest in landscapes. He was formerly an instructor with the Gallery Group and has won
awards in several regional shows. Linda Farmer is self taught and has supplemented and
expanded her expertise with watercolors through artist workshops. In recent years, Linda has
been able to nurture her lifelong interest in art. Her initial interest in oil painting has expanded
to sculpture, drawing and watercolors.

Some sculpture experience Is required
Cost of supplies will be additional, fee charged for firing, if needed
Students are welcomed and encouraged to make clay come alive in their hands. The
instructors will build on your skills and guide you through the steps involved in making clay
sculpture, choosing clay, handling your tools, hollowing and firing your creations. Clay and
tools will be available at the first class.
Marie Andersson has been actively involved with sculptor for a number of years as a CLL
student and recent instructor. Marie is a self-taught watercolorist and sculptress. Her work is
dramatic and easily identified. Assisting Marie will be Linda Farmer. Linda is another selftaught sculptress as well as an oil painter and watercolorist. She is also an instructor in oil
painting.

This semester we give special recognition to Evelyn Duvall who joined CLL in 1994 and since
1997 has been the course leader, instructor and motivation behind our creative sculpture
program. We thank Evelyn for all that she has accomplished. She is retiring from CLL so that
she and husband Ivo can relax and enjoy the time off. Thank you Evelyn for a job well done
and for encouraging hundreds of Sculpture students to enjoy their creativity with clay.

What could be timelier than this course on Islam and what it is all about as to the
historical, cultural and political relationship between Islam and the Western world.
Very simply, how does America respond to the challenge and how does the world
respond based on each country’s own particular make up and concerns? Also, to be
discussed is the fundamental question as to what are the teachings of Islam. Is
violence indeed a core teaching of the religion? Is there common ground for
dialogue?
