The Hartlepool game was a good competitive affair and I think for the first half we worked hard and kept our shape but we have got to be better in possession and I think that’s the crux of the matter over the three games we have played so far. We look good in training but we have yet to produce the flowing football that we are accustomed to her at Spennymoor but its all about getting ready for the 15th August. The second half was difficult because they put eleven fresh players on where as were were tiring but you know it’s a really good workout which is what we needed at this stage of the season. It doesn’t matter if it’s a friendly or a league game you always want to go out there and win it and we should have been one up in the first few minutes when there was a great ball in and Joe should have scored and it could have been a different game but you know first half very pleased, the shape was good and they didn’t open us up too much but second half their fitness really told and to be honest I was glad to get away with four. We know where we are and know we can play better but it’s all about getting time on the pitch at the moment. We could easily pick teams and beat them seven or eight nil and look really good and come to the start of the season you can’t win a game. We now know what our best system is with the players we have got so we will go again against Middlesbrough tonight which will be another real tough test as they are now in the U21 premier league and have some fantastic talent in their squad and it will be a good game again but we keep focussed on the bigger picture and that is the 15th August and we cant wait for the season to start. North Shields Match report... The game kicked off minutes after 7:45pm and the first big chance came in the 6th minute, when the 2015 FA Vase winners were given a direct free kick on the edge of the box, where defender Martin McKeown sent the ball straight into the wall which blocked it with ease but minutes later, a John Grey cross into the box was well caught by Moors keeper, Dan Lowson. It took Spennymoor over ten minutes for them to find their first chance of the game, a shot by former Gateshead striker Liam Henderson sent just a few inches wide of goal. Moors again had another chance when a good long ball in from 25 yards by Moors defender, Kallum Griffiths looked to find Shane Henry, but Shields keeper Shane McCafferty was too quick and saved it with ease. Shields got the first goal of the game in the 17th minute when a corner passed to Ryan Carr saw the striker hit home the North Tyneside visitor’s first goal of the day. GOAL - SPENNYMOOR TOWN 0-1 NORTH SHIELDS (17 mins - Ryan Carr) A consistent loss of possession was the only reason Spennymoor hadn’t created the chances for goals that they wanted at this point. Like Moors usually do, they were the better side after going a goal down and were desperate to get a goal back. They nearly did it when a Kallum Griffiths free kick from 23 yards went flying over the bar and hit the main stand rather than the back of the net. Spennymoor did manage to bring a goal back at the half hour mark when a Nathan Fisher cross deflected by a Shields defender reached Liam Henderson, who managed to tap home his first of what many hope to be many goals this season! GOAL - SPENNYMOOR TOWN 1-1 NORTH SHIELDS (30 mins - Liam Henderson) After the goal, another Spennymoor chance saw a collision with the Shields goalkeeper, Shane McCafferty and whilst I didn’t fully see the incident, it was serious enough that the keeper had to be subbed off and then stretched off in front of the respectful crowd who all clapped him off as the remaining 21 players on the pitch went for a quick drink and break on the sidelines. It was later confirmed on North Shields’ Twitter account that he had a suspected ligament damage and could face months out with the injury…quite heartbreaking at the beginning of the season! Some sloppy Shields defending almost saw Liam Henderson get a brace as he almost beat the keeper to get practically an open goal, but a disastrous shot sent the ball wide. He almost did it again before half time when another defensive mistake saw a one on one opportunity with the keeper fluffed again by ‘Hendo’ as the ball went straight into the keeper’s arms. HALF TIME - SPENNYMOOR TOWN 1-1 NORTH SHIELDS As the second half kicked off again, Moors perhaps looked like the better side when a long range free kick from about 28 yards by former West Auckland midfielder, Robert Briggs was well blocked by the new Shields keeper, as was a close range Liam Henderson shot. Dan Lowson, who had another good game, successfully saved a close distance shot by the Shields no 18 and although the visitors looked desperate to bring back their lead, it was Spennymoor who took the lead and went 2-1 up on 57 minutes when a Robert Briggs shot from outside the box hit the crossbar and upon the rebound, Glen Taylor managed to hit home By Liam Curry Moors’ second of the game…and Taylor’s first since returning to the Brewery Field from Ashington. GOAL - SPENNYMOOR TOWN 2-1 NORTH SHIELDS (57 mins - Glen Taylor) With keeper Dan Lowson going off just after the hour mark, a trialist goalkeeper for Spennymoor was well tested by the North Tyneside visitors, who defeated Glossop North End 2-1 AET to win the FA Vase in May. Dean Walker looked to put Shields level again when a long ball in the box found the midfielder, who headed the ball straight into the arms of the trialist keeper and a solid Moors defence easily cleared away a Shields corner with 20 minutes to go. Ryan Carr almost reached his brace when a good cross in from Michael McKeown was quickly caught by the Moors trialist before Carr could get heads to it. A rough tackle by skipper Chris Mason in the box saw North Shields given a penalty…which was missed by midfielder Ben Richardson as the Moors trialist caught the ball diving to the left. NORTH SHIELDS MISS A PENALTY ON 81 MINS Despite Shields’ drastic penalty miss still leaving them 2-1 down away to Spennymoor, they managed to draw level once more with a late equaliser in the 84th minute by midfielder Denver Morris. The Shields no 6 managed to score from just outside the box following a good through ball leaving just the keeper to beat. GOAL - SPENNYMOOR TOWN 2-2 NORTH SHIELDS (84 mins - Denver Morris) Similar to South Shields last night, who against a Spennymoor XI gave a few last minute attempts at goal following a late equaliser, Spennymoor’s first team did that very same tonight, but nothing came of it and ultimately the game ended in a 2-2 draw. FULL TIME - SPENNYMOOR TOWN 2-2 NORTH SHIELDS Attendance - 277 www.spennymoortownfc.co.uk Hartlepool Match report... The Hartlepool United First Team have already had a very busy week! The Poolies began their week with a 7-0 victory away to Billingham Town on Monday night and defeated Evo Stik NPL1N side, Harrogate RA 2-0 on Tuesday. A short break followed and they were back in action last night with a 1-1 draw away to Evo Stik NPL Premier Division side, Whitby Town and today, they topped off a 4 game week with a trip to the Brewery Field in Spennymoor. Hartlepool’s season last year was a very eventful one and although they had a few embarrassing moments including a 2-1 defeat at home to Blyth Spartans in the FA Cup 2nd Round in a match shown around the world on BBC Two, they made the headlines again at the end of the season when they were able to string together results that saw the Blue and White side drag themselves from rock bottom of the league in 24th to 22nd and dodge relegation in what the media portrayed as ‘The Great Escape’. The escape was perhaps made even sweeter when the Pools came from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 away to fierce rivals, Carlisle United in the last game of the season to see them secure their Football League status for at least one more season and following the installation of Ronnie Moore as boss, he has brought in many new signings the likes of Carl Magnay, Jake Carroll, Trevor Carson, Rhys Oates, Peter Denton, Billy Paynter and Rakish Bingham to name a few. Spennymoor have also had a big week too and following on from their 2-2 draw at home to North Shields on Wednesday evening, found out their fixtures for the 2015-16 season recently, which begin with an away trip to Glossop North End and two home ties with Harrogate RA and Radcliffe Borough to kickstart the season. Personally, I am happy with the fixtures list overall but the last 5 games of the season being Scarborough, New Mills, Bamber Bridge, Northwich Victoria and Warrington Town are a rather difficult affair to say the least! The first chance of the game came just before the five minute mark, when a Joe Tait header from close range went narrowly wide of the post and at the other side of the pitch, a corner in for the visitors saw chances by Brad Walker and Carl Magnay both dealt with well by the back 4. Hartlepool got the early goal just before the 15 minute mark when a cross in by forward, Rakish Bingham, who recently joined the Pools from Mansfield Town following a successful loan at Victoria Park towards the end of last season, found Scott Fenwick, who was able to head home the first goal of the game. GOAL - SPENNYMOOR TOWN 0-1 HARTLEPOOL UNITED (13 mins - Scott Fenwick) Pools looked to go 2-0 up when a long ball into Johnny Giles saw another header this time caught by Moors keeper, Dan Lowson. Both sides saw some varied play in the first half and Hartlepool had some terrific defending which saw some good Moors opportunities set up then ruined by the strong Pools defence. Hartlepool got a chance for a corner when a direct free kick by Brad Walker from the edge of the box was well punched away by Dan Lowson but the corner was cleared easily by Kallum By Liam Curry Griffiths with a diving header. We were nearly hit by the ball in the crowd when another Brad Walker shot from 30 yards hit the back of the stand. Another cross in by Rakish Bingham once again found the head of Scott Fenwick though he this time hit the side netting. Bingham had another chance for a goal when a shot from the penalty area was well blocked out by the Spennymoor defenders. HALF TIME - SPENNYMOOR TOWN 0-1 HARTLEPOOL UNITED Focus was shifted to Gavin Cogdon as the second half resumed. He was able to set up some good opportunities with numerous shots from the box and some good passing to his fellow teammates, but nothing sadly came of it. New boy Glen Taylor, who in his first spell with Spennymoor scored twice in 7 appearances before moving to his hometown side Ashington, sent a shot from close range deflected by the strong Pools defence for a corner, which again led to the ball being well blocked out following a shot by Andrew Stephenson. Pools made it 2-0 just after the hour mark when a through ball into Fergus Bell saw the midfielder easily tap home the first goal of the second half from the penalty area. GOAL - SPENNYMOOR TOWN 0-2 HARTLEPOOL UNITED (65 mins Fergus Bell) Midfielder, Shane Henry’s free kick from 26 yards was well blocked out by the Pools midfielder, leading to another corner. A squabble from the corner was again cleared by the League 2 side’s back 4. Hartlepool’s first chance following their second goal led to their third goal when midfielder Connor Smith, who managed to outrun past 4 defenders, saw him beat a Moors trialist goalkeeper to secure their third of the day. GOAL - SPENNYMOOR TOWN 0-3 HARTLEPOOL UNITED (75 mins Connor Smith) A Glen Taylor shot from the goal kick area went narrowly wide and perhaps the Moors best chance of the whole game came when a shot by Moors Legend, Gavin Cogdon from outside the box was only just caught by Pools keeper, Peter Denton. Pools got their fourth of the day just before full time when a ball in the box by Billy Paynter found Jake Carroll, who was able to beat the keeper and make it 4-0 before full time. Bamber Bridge 2014/15 - 3rd Expectation: Title Contenders Beaten playoff finalists for the second year running it’ll come as no surprise that Bamber are expected to be in the mix, and I believe genuine contenders for the title. Signings of Jamie Milligan (Harrogate Town), Michael Barnes, Dave Hankin, Joe Booth (all AFC Flyde), and Brett Ormerod (was relegated with Padiham) so far, all players who have experience of higher up with the trio from the Flyde Coast particularly impressive. The squad packs a lot of experience but how would those aging legs hold up on a paddy field or with a fixture backlog? Nethertheless if they are more than 10/1 I’ll be in the queue. Watch Out: Don’t punch the tin-shed roof in celebration, I’m still picking the tin out. Brighouse Town 2014/15 – 14th Expectation: Mediocracy Brig’s second season at this level, they aren’t going to threaten the top 10, they don’t have the resources to do it, for the most part they were effective in beating those sides below them that aided them to 51 points, I’d be surprised if they surpassed that total this time. They should be safe from the dog fight. Watch Out: Wear a suit, they’ll think you’re the chairman! Burscough 2014/15 - 15th Expectation: Mediocracy The Linnets are in the doldrums, bitter infighting between the supporters and board with the former accusing the latter of scheming to sell off their Victoria Park home for housing. Either way, the team isn’t as competitive as a decade ago, communication from the club is so poor I couldn’t tell you if they’ve signed anybody and I don’t see anything changing. Watch Out: According to those that travelled The Hop Vine is one heck of a Real Ale watering hole. Clitheroe 2014/15 - 13th Expectation: Midtable Shawbridge is a difficult place to go and win and that’s not just because the pitch has a side gradient of an Alpine ski-slope. Dangerous striker Sefton Gonzales and club captain Danny Morton have moved to Stockport County both will be a huge loss to Simon Garner’s side, they’ve replaced Morton with FA Trophy winning Gregg Anderson from North Ferriby United, yet goals may be a problem for this team. Watch Out: You’ll need a neck brace for that slope. Droylsden 2014/15 - 10th Expectation: Midtable Last season’s deadliest strike force would’ve been enough to guarantee a playoff place, but when you are conceding more goals than Ossett you’ve got a few problems. I thought they’d find their level after an awful few seasons tumbling down the pyramid. In contrast to last summer where they signed every man and his dog this summer has seen a peaceful period where the only notable transaction has been the departure of top scorer to Ciaran Kilhenney. The Bloods will be slipping down the pecking again. Watch Out: Keep your pocket zipped, tenners are like hen’s teeth. Farsley Celtic 2014/15 - 12th Expectation: Midtable It looked great for Farsley for most of last season as it did in their 2013/14 campaign, yet both times they capitulated spectacularly even managing to scrape Padiham from the foot of the form table. They’ve lost Gibraltan international Priestley to Shaw Lane Aquaforce, they’ve also lost 3 defenders, including key centre back Spencer Harris, though they have strengthened in midfield with former-Buxton man Neil Stevens. The Throstle Nest was a tough place to visit last season, but I’m very doubtful whether Farlsey are going to be any better and certainly not capable of mounting that playoff push. Watch Out: Difficult place to find, it’s even more difficult when the coach driver pens himself in. Glossop North End 2014/15 - 1st NECL Premier Expectation: Threaten The Top 10 Last season’s beaten FA Vase finalist will start their maiden season at step 4 and their first FA Trophy tie at home to us – brilliant! They’ll have their tails well and truly up. It’s difficult to ascertain where these NWCL will size up, last season Norton United were in the First Division South but had their own issues after reaching the first round of the FA Cup, finishing midtable, but Norton had a lot of money thrown at the squad. GNE haven’t signed anybody yet so this squad got to Wembley so they must be half-decent already. Watch Out: If you cannot make the game then Radio Hillmen will be broadcasting the match LIVE. Harrogate RA 2014/15 – 8th Expectation: Threaten The Top 10 New manager Lee Ashforth is looking to put his own stamp on Harrogate RA, we know the league’s top goalscorer Cartman left in January but that didn’t stop them doing the dirty on us on Easter Monday. Rob Youhill, Richard Lawrence, Adam Baker and Jordan Armstrong have all left Station View too. They have retained the services of centre back Dan Thirkell who is a key part of their defence, ambitions of playoffs will have to wait, there are just too many teams that you can make a better case for and they aren’t going to have another record breaking season. Watch Out: For the full wild-west experience get yourself into the Prince Of Wales first. Kendal Town 2014/15 – 16th Expectation: Midtable A disappointing season from Kendal last term, they were touted as dark horses who could threaten for a top 8 finish, instead it was packhorses. They have signed 6 over the summer including two goalkeepers, two former Morecambe players, and are boosted by retaining the services of marksman Jordan Connerton. It’s going to take a big improvement to get near the top half. Watch Out: Take ear muffs for the touchline foghorn, he’s a nightmare. Lancaster City 2014/15 – 11th Expectation: Top 10 There’s two reasons why I think Lancaster will be one of the few teams that improve on last season, the first is Darren Peacock and the second is Trevor Sinclair. Both men are well respected and shrewd, no signings just yet however I cannot help feel last year was blip, top 10 for the Dolly Blues, and they’ve got enough discipline to upset the big boys. Watch Out: It’s Phoenix Nights, the draught pump is underneath the bar and I swear its canned goods. Mossley 2014/15 – 8th Expectation: Midtable Surprise package of the season, at least if you expected Spennymoor to finish as high as fifth (and we did). With one of the better away records in the league Mossley are a tall, physical side, and caused us all sorts of problems from set pieces. They’ve lost Managers Player of the Year John Bennett to Curzon Ashton and centre back Josh Granite who was a rock in the defence (sorry). I think they’ll regress this time round, however they’ll still a chuffing nightmare to face. Watch Out: Check out the view from the main stand, if it’s not pitch black, or foggy, or wet, or… well it doesn’t matter. Kit Sponsors 2015/16... Shock here as York won 2-1 as at the end of the season Middlesbrough were 9th in the Second Division whilst York City just escaped relegation into the 4th Division as they finished in 19th spot in Division 3. Programme is a 14 pager which was the norm at the time costing 5p. 2) 1974/75 MIDDLESBROUGH V CARLISLE UNITED (0-2) (DIVISION ONE) Carlisle United had stunned English football the season before by getting promoted into the First Division as the clubs only had gates of around 7000 at the time. This match was in fact only their second ever game in Division 1 and even then they rocked the football world as they beat Chelsea away by 2-0 on the Saturday before beating the Boro by the same score then defeated Tottenham Hotspur in the next match and for a short time were top of the First Division or nowadays (Premier League). Sadly it did`nt last and they were relegated at the end of the season. Boro finished in 7th spot. 3)1976/77 MIDDLESBROUGH V WIMBLEDON (1-0) (F.A.CUP 3RD ROUND REPLAY) Wimbledon at the time were non league and playing in the Southern League whilst Boro were 7th in Division One but the Non League club were used to providing shocks in the F.A. Cup as a couple of years previous they had knocked out 1st Division Burnley 1-0 away from home before drawn with First Division Leaders Leeds United before losing in a replay. In the first game it ended 0-0 at the Dons Plough Lane Ground. Boro won through in this match by 1-0 before beating Hereford United 4-0 in the 4th, Arsenal 4-1 in the 5th Round but lost away to Liverpool 2-0 in the Quarter Final. 4)1987/88 MIDDLESBROUGH V SUTTON UNITED (1-0) (F.A.CUP 3RD ROUND REPLAY) This was another banana skin for the Boro as they faced another non league club in Vauxhall Conference side Sutton United who had knocked out League sides Aldershot 3-0 at home in the 1st Round then Peterborough United 3-1 away in the 2nd Round before drawing with Second Division Boro 1-1 at their Gander Green Ground. In this replay Middlesbrough won through by 1-0. In the Foruth Round Boro drew 2-2 at home to Everton before losing 2-1 away. Middlesbrough finished the season in 3rd spot in the Division 2 and promotion into the First Division. 5)1996/97 MIDDLESBROUGH V LEICESTER CITY (1-1) LEAGUE CUP FINAL) 1996/97 MIDDLESBROUGH V LEICESTER CITY (0-1)(REPLAY) Boro were on the crest of a wave this season as they reached the Coca Cola Cup Final at Wembley playing Premier League opposition in Leicester City. On the way to the Final. They beat Hereford United 10-0 on aggregate in the Second Round before giving Huddersfield Town a 5-1 pasting in the 3rd Round. In the Fourth Round they saw off a Strong Newcastle United side by 3-1 at home. The Quarter Final and a great 2-1 success at Home against Liverpool saw them in the Semi`s. Middlesbrough were to play Stockport County of Division 2 for a place in the Final. Over 2 legs the Boro squeezed through by 2-1. The Final at Wembley saw Ravanelli score in Extra Time before Leicester equalised In the last minute of extra time through Heskey. The replay at Hillsborough,Sheffield saw Leicester win With a Steve Claridge goal in extra time in the replay. 6) 1 996/97 MIDDLESBROUGH V CHESTERFIELD (3-3) (F.A.CUP SEMI FINAL) This F.A.Cup Semi Final had everything in a tremendous match which went one way then the other as 3rd Division Chesterfield threatened a MIDDLESBROUGH PROGRAMMES 1971-2006 real shock against First Division Middlesbrough. It was 0-0 at Half Time then the fireworks started with Chesterfield racing into a 2-0 lead through Morris(54) and Sean Dyche(60) with a penalty before the Boro hit back with Ravanelli (64) and Craig Hignett (70) with a penalty. It was 2-2 after 90 minutes. Festa(100) scored for Boro before a last gasp equaliser from Jamie Hewitt made it 3-3. Match was played at Old Trafford. In the replay at Hillsborough,Sheffield Boro won 3-0 with goals from Ravanelli, Emerson and Beck. 7) 1997/98MIDDLESBROUGH V CHELSEA (0-2) (COCA COLA CUP FINAL) For the second season running the Boro reached Wembley in the Coca Cola Cup Final and again it was heartbreak as in the previous year the match went to extra time with no goals. Two goals in extra time for Chelsea meant the Boro losing again similar to the year before. Boro beat Barnet 3-0 over 2 legs in the 2nd Round. The 3rd Round a fine 2-0 at home against Sunderland before beating Bolton Wanderers 2-1 at home in the 4th Round. A 1-0 away win at Reading saw the Boro in the Semi Finals. Liverpool was the destination for the 1st leg and although the Boro lost 2-1 they won the 2nd leg by 2-0 to see them into the Final. 8) 99/00 MIDDLESBROUGH V BRADFORD CITY (0-1) (PREMIER LEAGUE) Bradford city were playing their first ever match in the Premier league and first in the top Division for 70 years as they played away at Middlesbrough. Bradford shocked the Boro and won 1-0 with a late Dean Saunders goal. Crowd of 33762 watched the game. The programme is a glossy 56 pager with plenty of reading in it. End of the season Boro finished in 12th whilst Bradford just avoided relegation in 17th spot. 9)03/04 MIDDLESBROUGH V BOLTON WANDERERS (2-1) (CARLING CUP FINAL) At last after the despair of losing Finals in the previous years the Boro at last won a Cup Final in this Carling Cup Final(League Cup Final) played at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Bolton Wanderers then in the Premier League was the Oppostion and 2 early goals from Jo-Desire Job and Bolo Zenden saw Boro lead 2-0 inside the first 7 minutes.A goal from Kevin Davies on 21 minutes was all that Bolton could score so it was the Boro who won the Cup for the first time with a 2-1 win. Middlesbrough defeated Brighton 1-0 in the 2nd Round after extra time. Wigan Atheltic 2-1 away in the 3rd Round. Everton at home saw the Boro draw 0-0 but they won through by 5-4 on Penalties. In the Quarter Final it was away at Spurs and after a 1-1 draw again the Boro went through with a 5-4 win on Penalties. The Semi Final against Arsenal was a tough one but a great 1-0 win away in the first leg and a 2-1 win at home saw the Boro through to the Final with a 3-1 Aggregate win. 10) 05/06 SEVILLE V MIDDLESBROUGH (4-0) (EUFA CUP FINAL)(EINDHOVEN) I think even Boro fans had to shake their head with disbelief as they reached this EUFA Cup Final in 2006 in Eindhoven in Holland as they played Spanish side Seville. On the night Seville were just too good against the Boro and won by 4-0. Boro reached the Final by beating Skoda Xanthi 2-0 on Aggregate in the 1st Round. They topped a groupl which included the following clubs AZ Alkamaar,Grasshoppers,Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk and PFC Litex Lovech. The next round saw them play VFB Stuttgart and they scraped through on away goals after a 2-2 draw after 2 legs. AS Roma were next and another 2-2 draw and again Boro survived with away goals seeing them through. The Quarter Finals and it was Basel from Switzerland and after losing 2-0 in the first leg it looked tough in the 2nd leg. The Boro then went 3-0 down in aggregate on 23 Minutes but a fantastic fight back saw them storm back with four goals to win through by 4-3 on Aggregate. The Semi Final and the first leg was in Romania against Steau Bucharest and a 1-0 defeat. The Second leg was similar to the Basel match and Boro found themselves 3-0 down on aggregate with 25 minutes on the clock. Again another fantastic fight back saw them win through by 4-3 on Aggregate. A great achievement by the Boro sadly they just failed in the Final. WITH THANKS TO HARRY WATSON FOR THIS ARTICLE ON THE BORO Middlesbrough FC Football Club They won the FA Amateur Cup in 1895 and again in 1898. The club turned professional in 1889, but reverted to amateur status in 1892 They turned professional permanently in 1899. After three seasons, they won promotion to the First Division, where they would remain for the next 22 years. In 1903, the club moved to Ayresome Park, their home for the next 92 years. In 1905, the club sanctioned the transfer of Alf Common for £1,000, a record fee. Over the next few years, their form fluctuated greatly, rising to sixth in 1907–08 before dropping to seventeenth two seasons later. The club rose to their highest league finish to date, third, in 1913–14. The First World War soon intervened and football was suspended. Before league football resumed, Middlesbrough won the Northern Victory League, but the team were unable to maintain their previous form and finished the 1919–20 season in mid-table. They remained in the First Division for the next few seasons, but were relegated in 1923–24 after finishing bottom, ten points adrift of their nearest rivals. Three seasons later, they won the Division Two title. During that season, debutant George Camsell, who had signed from Third Division North side Durham City the previous season, finished with a record 59 league goals, which included nine hat tricks. He would continue as top scorer for each of the next ten seasons. Their tenure back in the top flight lasted only one season, and the club were relegated. They were promoted at the first attempt in 1928–29, winning another Second Division title. The club remained in the First Division until 1954. The decade before the war saw the emergence of Wilf Mannion and George Hardwick, both of whom would go on to become England internationals in the years ahead. Middlesbrough climbed to fourth in the last full season before the Second World War and were expected to challenge for the title next season, but the war intervened. After the war, the club was unable to recover the form of the previous seasons and hovered around mid-table and exited in the early rounds of the FA Cup. Soon afterwards the team began to falter, eventually suffering relegation in 1953–54. This was the start of a 20-year spell outside the top division, but saw the emergence of one of the club’s top goalscorers, Brian Clough, who scored 204 goals in 222 games, before he left for Sunderland. Over that period, Middlesbrough maintained reasonable progress in the Second Division but were never serious contenders for promotion. After a fourth-place finish in 1962–63, the club endured a steady decline and were relegated to the Third Division for the first time in their history in 1966. ootball Club’s History... New manager Stan Anderson returned the club to the second flight at the first attempt. Middlesbrough would not finish below ninth during the next eight seasons. By 1974,Jack Charlton had taken over as manager and guided the team back to the top flight. They ensured promotion as early as 23 March, and with eight games of the season left, they became runaway champions, finishing with a record 65 points. Middlesbrough won their first silverware as a professional side in the 1975–76 season, lifting the Anglo-Scottish Cup in its inaugural season after a two-legged final win over Fulham. The club experienced severe financial difficulties during the mid-1980s. Middlesbrough were dropping down the table, and finished nineteenth in the 1984–85 season. In April 1986 the club had to borrow £30,000 from the PFA to pay wages. The final game of the season saw Middlesbrough relegated to the Third Division once more. That summer, the club called in the Provisional Liquidator and shortly afterwards, the club was wound up and the gates to Ayresome Park were padlocked. Without the £350,000 capital required for Football League registration, a new rule, it seemed inevitable that the club would fold permanently. However, Steve Gibson, a member of the board at the time, brought together a consortium and with ten minutes to spare before the deadline, they completed their registration with the Football League for the 1986– 87 season. Following the registration came both a change of club crest and a change of the official company name to Middlesbrough Football and Athletic Club (1986) Ltd. Over the next two seasons, Middlesbrough gained successive promotions into Division Two and then into Division One. The next season though, they came straight back down to Division Two, and with it came the then British transfer record move of Gary Pallister to Manchester United for £2.3 million. Despite constant promotion and relegation, Middlesbrough were founding members of the FA Premier League for the 1992–93 season. ...CONTINUED OVERLEAF Middlesbrough FC Football Club Player-manager Bryan Robson, from Manchester United, took charge in 1994 and Middlesbrough were brought back into national attention. Following promotion to the Premier League and high-profile purchases like diminutive Brazilian Juninho, many considered Middlesbrough were on the way up. However, a difficult 1996–97 season was compounded by a deduction of three points imposed just after Christmas, as punishment for the club›s failure to fulfil a fixture against Blackburn, which ultimately resulted in relegation. Without the points deduction, the club would have had enough points to avoid relegation. At the same time, the club managed to reach both the League and FACup finals for the first time, but lost out in both. Despite being in the second tier they U21 Manager were again runners up in the League Cup Paul Jenkins final the next year. Despite losing high profile players Fabrizio Ravanelli and Juninho due to relegation, Middlesbrough were promoted back to the Premiership at the first attempt in 1998. The following season saw them settle well and they enjoyed a 12-game unbeaten run midway through 1998–99, including a 3–2 win at Old Trafford in January during which they took a 0–3 lead. It was United›s only home defeat during their treble winning season. They continued to stay secure in mid-table the following season, thanks mainly to the goals of Hamilton Ricard and the signings of big name players such as Paul Ince and Christian Ziege. In 2000–01 they had a brief relegation scare that was solved with the arrival of Terry Venables as co-manager, and a 0–3 win away at Arsenal in March was the team›s best result. The trend of buying European stars continued with the acquisitions of Christian Karembeu and Alen Bokši. Bryan Robson left the club before the start of 2001–02 season, having served as manager for 7 years, and was replaced by Manchester United assistant coach Steve McClaren. The following seasons saw Premiership security maintained as Middlesbrough slowly improved and were seen as a tough side to beat when playing at the Riverside Stadium. During McClaren’s reign, Middlesbrough achieved their highest Premier league placing of 7th in the 2004–05 season. ootball Club’s History... The 2004 League Cup Final at theMillennium Stadium The 2003–04 season was the most successful in the club’s history as they finally won a major trophy after beating Bolton 1–2 in the League Cup final under manager Steve McClaren. This success also ensured that Middlesbrough would qualify for Europe – the UEFA Cup – for the first time, in which they reached the last 16. UEFA cup qualification was achieved for the second consecutive year after a dramatic 1–1 away draw with Manchester City thanks to a late penalty save from Mark Schwarzer in the last game of the season. Middlesbrough reached the 2006 UEFA Cup Final in Eindhoven, following two comebacks from 3–0 down in the rounds preceding it, but lost 4–0 to Sevilla. Following the cup final, McClaren left to head up the England team, and captain Gareth Southgate took over. Despite not having the coaching qualifications, he was allowed to continue after receiving special dispensation. During the 2007–08 season, Southgate broke Middlesbrough’s record transfer fee, paying £13.6 million for Brazilian striker Afonso Alves. Southgate’s first two seasons saw the club finish in 12th and 13th places. He oversaw the club reaching the quarter finals of the FA Cup for three seasons, but the club was relegated to the Football League Championship on the last day of the 2008–09 season. Southgate was sacked in October 2009, and replaced by Gordon Strachan. At the time of Southgate’s dismissal, Boro were fourth in the Championship and only one point away from the automatic promotion spot, but their form under Strachan was significantly worse and they finished mid-table. Despite starting the 2010–11 campaign as promotion favourites, the club endured a disappointing start to the season securing only 1-point in 5 away games. Having slipped to 20th in the Championship following a home defeat to rivals Leeds, Strachan resigned on 18 October. A week later, Tony Mowbray was confirmed as the new manager. Having staved off the threat of relegation, Mowbray successfully transformed Boro’s fortunes, eventually guiding them to a top-half finish. Boro ended the season top of the form table after four consecutive league wins, the first such run since 1998. However, despite a magnificent first half of the season, Boro failed to capitalise, and finished 7th in the League, missing out on the play-offs by 5 points and 1 position. ...CONTINUED OVERLEAF Middlesbrough FC Football Club 2013–present: Karanka era Following a poor run of form of 2 wins in 12 games in the 2013–14 campaign, on 21 October 2013, nearly 3 years after his arrival, Tony Mowbray left the club with immediate effect. Aitor Karanka, a former Spanish defender and assistant coach at Real Madrid to José Mourinho became the new Middlesbrough manager on 13 November 2013, signing a two-year contract. He became the first non-British manager at the club. The club finished the season twelfth in the final league standings. In his first full season in charge the club finished fourth and thus qualified for the 2015 Football League play-offs. After seeing off Brentford F.C. 1-5 on aggregate in the semi-final, the club lost 2-0 to Norwich City at the Wembley Stadium in the final.
