Board of Education meetings are
scheduled monthly throughout
the year and are listed on the
calendar. Meetings dates and locations are also is listed on the
district website
www.mtsinai.k12.ny.us
Appointments
Attendance
Regular attendance and punctuality are vital to the
educational well-being of each child. Parents are
urged to ensure that each child attends school regularly and arrives at school on time.
You are also asked to inform the school if your child
is to be absent or late. Parents of Elementary
School students should notify the school nurse at
870-2641. Parents of students in grades 5-8
should call the Middle School Main Office at 8702700. Parents of students in grades 9-12 should
call the High School Nurse’s Office at 870-2822.
In all instances of absences or tardiness, a note
must be forwarded immediately to the homeroom
teacher stating the reason.
Do not send your child to school so early that he or
she will arrive before the scheduled opening time.
We request that children remain at home rather
than play in unsupervised areas.
Attendance Regulations
The State Education Department requires the
teacher to keep an accurate record of every student’s attendance during regular school hours.
Such records must show the true cause of absence. For this reason, all students are required on
their return to school to bring written explanations
from parents or guardians in every case of absence
or tardiness. Please consult the District’s Attendance Policy contained in the student handbook for
further specifics and your responsibilities in this
regard.
In order to avoid delay, it is suggested that you
make an appointment prior to visiting the school.
A note or a phone message to the person you
wish to see will ensure your desired meeting. Under ordinary circumstances, you would call either
the building principal, a guidance counselor or the
school nurse. In most cases, the questions that
arise concerning the student can be easily clarified
by an early meeting between the parent and
teacher. These conferences, of course, are encouraged.
Inspection of Facilities
In order to maintain a productive learning environment for the students, each year our facilities undergo a number of inspections with the purpose
of ensuring the health and safety of the students
and the physical integrity of the school buildings.
Among the inspections that take place annually
are:






Compliance with fire code regulations
Community Use of Schools
Building/Field use forms are available at each
school office and on the district’s website. No
group will be permitted to use the facilities without
written approval from the District.
Fire Alarm testing
Fire drills
Evacuation drills
Fire extinguishers check for pressure and chemicals.
AED
A structural engineer completes a structural inspection of all the buildings each year, and certified inspectors also complete asbestos inspection. These reports are available through a Freedom of Information request.
Visitors
To ensure the safety of each student in our care,
we insist that all visitors obtain a pass from the
school office. There can be no exception. We are
certain that you understand our concern and will
cooperate with District procedures.

information. If you have any questions, contact
your child’s building principal.

TELL THE DRIVER IF YOU DROP ANYTHING
NEVER REACH UNDER THE BUS!
As a school community, we must accept the fact that
social demands and activities will determine our mode
of dress. Our student councils, the faculty, and the administration are of the opinion that if we are to maintain
a good educational atmosphere in our schools, there
must be a reasonable standard of acceptable dress.
In keeping with this objective, the school administration will not condone dress or grooming on the part of
the student that is detrimental to safety and health or is
distractive or disruptive to learning.
We recognize that parents have the basic responsibility for appropriate dress and grooming, and as such,
their aid is earnestly solicited in helping to create a favorable “dress appearance” among the students of our
school district. The administration expects, therefore,
that students dress in a manner consistent with the District’s Code of Conduct located on the district’s website.

Stay Informed with School Messenger
We believe that keeping you informed about your child's
whereabouts and safety is paramount. To help accomplish this task, the district is using School Messenger to
provide our families with information about their child
and the school. To register for this service, go to our
district website (www.mtsinai.k12.ny.us) and click on the
link for School Messenger. Once there, you will be able
to choose how and where you receive messages from
the schools. We encourage everyone who has not yet
registered to log on and do so. If you are already registered, please revisit the site to see the new changes and
add/modify additional phone numbers and other forms
of contact.
Information can also be heard on one of the following

Asbestos Management Plan
In accordance with 40 CFR §763.84.c, regard this statement as the district’s annual notification to all workers,
students and or their legal guardians that the district
continues to maintain its Asbestos Management Plan
(AMP) which documents all performed or planned asbestos related inspections, response actions, and postresponse action activities, including periodic reinspection and surveillance activities within the school district. A copy of this AMP is available for your review and
or inspection at the district’s facilities office and the main
office of each school building.
Parents/guardians should arrange to be home, or to
have a safe place to which children can go until parents/
guardians can return home. Should an early dismissal
become necessary, the Mt. Sinai High School students
will be dismissed before the elementary school children.
This should allow older students to be at home when the
younger children arrive. Parents should develop a plan
with their child(ren) in the event they are not home when
he/she returns home.

Emergency Closing After the Start of
School
If emergency weather conditions or other emergency
situations should develop after school is in session and
open for the day, an early dismissal will be announced
and all students will be dismissed early so that they can
arrive home safely on the buses. All after-school student-related activities would be cancelled for that day.
Based on the day’s possible weather reports and weather conditions, parents/guardians should anticipate an
early dismissal possibility and wait for a School Messenger
alert
with
specific
details.

Kindergarten Registration
Children residing within the district who will be five
years old on or before December 1st are eligible to
enter kindergarten in September of that year. Kindergarten registration is held at the elementary
school in the spring of each year. A birth certificate and immunization record (see below) must be
presented at the time of registration. In addition, a
physical examination is also required for entrance
into school. Specific dates, times and all information necessary for registration are publicized
well in advance of registration week.
Immunizations
Under New York State Public Health Law all children must be properly immunized prior to their
entry into school. Minimum immunizations include
three doses of DPT, three doses of polio, two doses of measles, one dose each of rubella (German
Measles), mumps, Varicella vaccine and Haemophilus influenza Type B (Hib). In addition, any
child born after January 1, 1993 is required to provide proof of immunization for Hepatitis B. Immunizations may be waived in cases of medical contraindication with proper physician documentation.
.

BOOSTER CLUB
The Booster Club is proud of all it has been
able to give to our many student athletes. Each
year we donate to a number of athletes, coaches and sports programs. We strive to enhance
the quality of the Mount Sinai School District
Athletics. We are always looking for more volunteers, so check the calendar for our meeting
dates. Also, look for our annual events like
homecoming, faculty basketball game, golf outing, and our super summer sports camp.
Thanks for your support!
