Congratulations to our graduating class of 2013. Today, Carlin, Makayla and Bradley will enter and exit our
school for the last time as students. Their hard work and dedication has been tremendous and the entire Winton
State School community wish them well as they move on to begin their lives in “post-year 12 territory”.
Best of luck to each of you and congratulations on your fantastic achievements.

Dear parents, students and friends.
What an amazing week it has been. Wednesday we
celebrated the outstanding achievements of so many of our
wonderful students at our annual speech night. I was
delighted to see the event was so well a ended and likewise
very pleased with the support and encouragement offered to
our award recipients. Congratula!ons to everyone who won
awards this year. Keep working hard, se#ng goals and
achieving success.
Last night our gradua!ng senior students presented at the
Coolabah Café for the Senior Dinner. The night was a lovely
chance for family, friends, students and staff to reflect on the
years gone by and celebrate the achievement of our
gradua!ng students. Bradley, Carlin and Makayla we are all so
proud of your achievement and know you will all go on to
achieve anything that you set your minds to. It has been a
pleasure for all our staff to have shared in your educa!onal
journeys. Today our three graduates a ended their last
assembly and were provided with a guard of honour as they
exited our school gates for the last !me.
With all this said, it is business as usual for all students in prep
to year 11. Teachers are busily marking and wri!ng report
cards. Parents will be able to request a parent teacher
interview with their child’s teacher in the week beginning
December 2nd.
Next week our school will be visited by Qld Health,
Queensland Ambulance Service and Sheree Miller to discuss
both drug and accident educa!on. Students in years 7-11 will
par!cipate in two a8ernoon sessions, on Monday and Friday,
with our visitors.
Next week, on Wednesday, I will be away at Longreach as I
am par!cipa!ng in a peer review process. This process will
see me work as a member of a team who will review the
Junior Secondary Department of Longreach State High School.
In turn, the team will a end Winton on Thursday and provide
a review of our Junior Secondary Department.

Chappy’s Chatter
Wow! This year is flying by!
I’ve been enjoying spending time with the students.
Breakfast Club continues to give students and staff
a chance to chat casually, while enjoying toast or
cereal.
Spending time with the students in class is always
interesting and exciting. It’s great to see students
learning and understanding new ideas and
concepts.
Lunchtime in the Cave provides an opportunity for
students to chat or play board games. After school
activities let the staff and students enjoy a variety of
different activities - there is still a small group of
students sewing on Tuesday afternoons, as well as
the activities that occur in other parts of the school.
The staff at the school are an inspiration, in the time
they spend preparing for classes, and the
relationships they build with the students.
I will miss the staff members who are moving at the
end of the year, but will enjoy getting to know new
people.

Junior Secondary Transi on Day
Winton State School will be holding a High School
Transition day on Monday the 2nd of December. This is a
day to allow all students in the community entering year
7 & 8 to familiarise themselves with the workings of a
typical high school day. The day will start with Form
class at 8:45am and rotate through a number of different
subject classes with different subject teachers. Students
will receive a “sample” of the different learning areas
offered in the Junior Secondary phase of learning.
This is an open invitation to all eligible year 7 & 8
students in 2014 within the community to become
familiar with the workings of high school timetable on a
typical school day. We look forward to seeing you then.

On Wednesday November 13th 2013 our school hosted its annual speech night. The night was a great
success with many students receiving some very prestigious awards. Congratulations to everyone on a
fabulous night and for your hard work and dedication right throughout the year.
An extra special thank you to the working party of staff who organised this fabulous event. Especially,
Miss Helen who was instrumental in the organisation and management of the night.

The Sunny Side
7/8 SEL
In the 7/8 Social and Emotional Learning unit, the students have begun to do
their Secret Santas. This is a fun way to fill a classmate or teacher’s bucket.
We will keep these going until the end of the term.
7/8 The Arts
The students are continuing to work on their Spectacular scripts and
choreography. They are very committed to the rehearsal process. The boys’
group will also begin filming for the media parts of their performance.
9/10 The Arts
The 9/10 the Arts class have continued planning their music clips. They have been using the Winton State
School grounds as the locations for their music clips. As we complete the filming requirements, we will then push
onto the trickier side: editing.
11/12 Social and Community Studies
In Social and Community Studies, the students have presented their
motivational and informative speeches for the 9/10 class. Thank you to the
9/10s for being a “rent-an-audience” for the Senior students and their
assessment. The SACS students were very professional and did well.
7/8 Technology
The 7/8 class have completed making their adapted scones, with fantastic
results. Chocolate chip scones proved to be very popular among the
students (and teachers). We also experimented by making cottage cheese
and most of the students were brave enough to sample their creations. In
my opinion, it was delicious and the students did very well.
Primary Spectacular
The students are all busy working towards their spectacular performances. The 2/3 class have begun to nail their
fast-paced choreography, and the Prep/1 class has now been introduced to all of theirs. Even more exciting is
the 4/5/6 students who have begun to present their OWN choreography to their class to become part of the
Spectacular performance. They are displaying their understanding of movements, levels and groups.
Senior Agriculture and Engineering
The year 11/12 Agriculture and Engineering class have completed all work out at the slaughter yards.
In past weeks the classes have repaired more fences around the yards by cutting and welding new round rails in
places where animals were escaping. The project allowed the students to demonstrate many engineering skills as
well as carrying out a variety of weld types in different positions.
The agriculture class had a BBQ breakfast out at the slaughter yards this week to celebrate their achievements this
year and to say our final goodbyes to the senior students: Carlin Ellis and Makayla Laffin.

Remembrance Day also known as Armistice Day
falls each year on the 11th of November marking the
anniversary of the armistice (suspension of fighting)
which ended the First World War (1914–18).
At 11 am on 11 November 1918 the guns of the
Western Front fell silent after more than four years
continuous warfare. The allied armies had driven the
German invaders back, having inflicted heavy
defeats upon them over the preceding four months.
On Monday 11th of November 2013 at 11 am our
students observed one minute silence in memory of
those who died or suffered in all wars and armed
conflicts.
The red remembrance poppy has become a
recognisable emblem of Remembrance Day due to
the poem "In Flanders Fields" (John McRae, 1915).
These poppies bloomed across some of the worst
battlefields of Flanders in World War I, their vivid red
colour an appropriate symbol for the bloodshed in
trench warfare.
At the Winton Cemetery our students lay poppies in
memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The Outback College of Hospitality arrived this week to continue the deliver of
Certificate II Hospitality. Jordan has joined the program now and is being well upskilled by his teacher, Mrs Hamilton, and two senior student veterans — Hannah and
Thomas.
This visit students are learning the art of coffee making and learning how to be
industry ready barristers. While still learning, Thomas can now make 6 coffees in 5
minutes! Jordan’s big smile as he delivers daily coffee to the staff has be magnificent.
It has been so wonderful seeing our Hospitality students continue to develop their
skills in readiness of the industry.
