Attendance/Illness
A reminder that if there is a possibility that a child has a Diarrhoea and/or
Vomiting bug they must have 48 hours clear from their last bout of sickness or
diarrhoea before returning to school. This is essential to prevent the spread of
infection in school and in line with NHS and Government guidance. We continue
to deep clean any parts of the school affected by a bug and insist on children
using hand gel on their way into lunch. Please work alongside the school in this
matter.
Parade takes place Saturday 25th June 2016
Please pop along and support our Year 3s in the parade which kicks off at 10.45 led by the crazy antics of the
Bournemouth Carnival Band who will be moving up, down and round about Wimborne Road in their usual
unpredictable way. At about 11am the main parade gets underway led by Town Crier David Squire. The best
parade entry will win a trophy. The winners will be presented with a large, engraved trophy at around 4pm on
the main stage.
Class photos
Year 6 Group Photo
The class photo payments have now been
collected. Printing takes approximately 7-10
days. As soon as the photos have been returned
to the school office we will hand all orders out to
the class teachers to send home via the children.
Ashley Wood Studios are hoping to return to
Winton Primary before the end of term to take a
whole year 6 leavers photo. Firstly we would like
to see if this is something the year 6 parents
would be interested in and would therefore ask
you to kindly telephone, email or pop in to the
office by next Thursday 30th June to register your
interest.
The summer term is always an extremely busy one for school sport and PE and there have been a lot of
sporting events to report on recently.
Firstly Winton had both its KS1 and KS2 Sports days before and after half term respectively. Sun dazzled
down on the multi-coloured symmetrical arrangement of cones and 500 or so children competed with all
their might to help themselves and their team to a possible glory...or future achievement! Olympic values
were seen in abundance as Plum class, 1LB/1HP, 2HS and 2KM took the victory for KS1.
Similarly for KS2 Yellow house put in a colossal effort to be overall winners. There were some fantastic
individual sprinting and longer distance running but also some great teamwork, surprise and wonder! It
was also inspiring for all the children to have so many parents in attendance, encouraging the children to
do their best. Thank you all for your support.
Our Athletics season has just finished. We had three league meetings for the Yr 3-6 Quad Kids event. Quad
Kids is where all athletes have to do four athletic events: a sprint, a long distance run, a throw and a jump
to score points for the school. The children can track their achievements nationally on the Quad Kids
website and I believe the Bournemouth primary school's league is the biggest in the country. I am also
proud to say that our Year 5/6 team managed 3rd place out of 22 schools. A great performance.
This term we have also had Town Sports, an annual meeting at Kings Park Stadium where all of the 28
schools in Bournemouth compete in a huge array of athletics events. Winton had managed to qualify for
all of the hurdles finals the previous week as well as two of the relay finals, so on the actual day, there was
lots of action to watch. Among a lot of very good performances eight of our athletes managed a top three
finish and therefore qualified for the county athletics championships, next weekend, Saturday 2nd July at
Ashdown Leisure Centre. A special congratulations goes to Morgan O'Brien in the Yr 6 girls hurdles, Mia
O'Brien in the Yr 6 girls long jump, Golda Dennison in the Yr 6 girls high jump, Isaac Cowley in the Yr 5 boys
high jump, Teddy Hopkins in Yr 5 boys hurdles, Ollie Morgan in the Yr 5 75m sprint, Kaden Hamerston in
the Yr 6 boys high jump, Harrison Marsh in the Yr 4 60m sprint and Charlotte Hannibal in the Yr 6 girls 150m
sprint. Good luck next weekend.
In Tennis our Yr 3/4 winning team went to play their county qualification tournament over at Southbourne
Tennis Club, having qualified in the local event at Victoria Avenue Tennis Club. They performed well
finishing 3rd overall on the day. In rounders our Yr 5/6 team won 3 out of 5 games in the Bournemouth
Primary School's annual tournament. Well done to everyone involved.
Next week we are again lucky to be going to The Dorset School Games with our Golf team, having won the
town competition in Bournemouth. This will be a great occasion at Bryanston School and I am looking
forward to seeing some great golf!
Keep healthy and thank you again for all of your support.
Mr Millar and the PE team.
HOUSE COLOUR CHARITY EVENTS
The house competition is very exciting this year. The lead changes most weeks at the moment! Children
continue to earn house points when they get a sparkle certificate and for special competitions, such as sports
day. The current house challenge is to raise the most money for a rights respecting charity. Each house has
chosen a charity that seeks to help children who do not have access to all the rights identified by UNICEF.
The children are organising their own fundraising events next week and we will let you know which house wins!
Red House
Each house is raising money for specific charities. Red house will be raising money for the
International Care Network. This charity helps support refugees in their time of crisis and
helps children to find a safe place to live. The children decided to raise money for this charity
by selling ice-creams on Tuesday 28th from 3pm on the big playground. Each ice-cream will cost 50p - £1, so
please be generous and buy yourself a treat!
Red house children will also be bringing home a decorated red box to fill with small change and bring back to
school by Friday 8th July.
Green House
The Great Green Bake Off will be the green house event raising money for the Trussell Trust.
This charity helps run over 400 food banks for people in crisis across the UK. The children decided
to raise money for this charity by baking and selling cakes on Wednesday 29th after school outside
the year 5 by the ball court. Each cake will cost 50p - £1, so please send you child in with money
for this.
Yellow House
On Friday 1st July, Yellow House will be raising money for the Lily Pad Appeal. This charity
raises money for children with disabilities and links to Article 23. 'Every child with a disability
has the right to live a full and decent life’.
Yellow house have decided to hold 'A Challenging Sports Day' to raise money for this
great cause. Activities will include a blindfolded obstacle course, where children will have
to listen to their partners’ directions to complete the course successfully.
Children from all houses will have an opportunity throughout the day to compete in 'A
Challenging Sports Day' with their class. We ask that children bring in £1 to enter.
The main challenge will be trying to beat your teachers!
Blue House
Blue House Gunging!
Raffle tickets to gunge the teacher will be on sale for 20p at break times and at the end of each
school day from Monday 27th June. You can buy as many raffle tickets as you like to be in with
a chance to gunge a teacher of your choice! Gunging will take place on Thursday 30th June. All
proceeds will go towards Water Aid.
If you are a member of Blue House don’t forget to get filling an empty water bottle with any
loose change you can find. Hand in to your class teacher by Friday 1st July.

In order to make sure the fayre runs smoothly, we are in desperate need of volunteers. We have various jobs that
need doing and stalls that need manning. On Friday 15th July we need help with getting the donations sorted and
ticketing the tombolas. We will be in school between 9am-3pm based in the spare Year 5 classroom, please drop in
any time to help. On the day itself, we have 2 shifts available. These are 12pm-1.30pm and 1.30pm-3pm. We also
need help with setting up from 9am and clearing away from 3pm. If you can help with any of these please contact us
(contact details below) or put your details on one of the signup sheets that will be around school over the next few
days.
Vacancy for PFA chairperson and treasurer from September 2016
The Winton Primary Parents and Friends Association is a group of volunteers who meet a few times a year to discuss and arrange
fundraising and social events to benefit the children and school community.
An opportunity has arisen for a chairperson or co-chairs to lead and coordinate the committee’s ideas, as our current chair steps
aside after two successful years.
Perhaps you have the time to arrange and bring together events such as school fayres and discos? Maybe you are business
minded, have good ideas, are great with people, have a grand vision for the PFA or are really keen to support Winton Primary in
this exhilarating, role alongside its loyal base of existing members and supportive head teacher.
If you are interested in this position or have any questions, then please contact Caroline Tiller who will be happy to discuss the
role further.
Also, an opportunity has arisen for a treasurer of the PFA who manages the money the PFA raises. This will include keeping a
record of income and outgoings, arranging banking, paying bills and other financial aspects such as, applying for gift aid, preparing
floats and counting monies. If you have an interest in the financial side of life, this role could be just for you! Please get in touch
with Caroline Tiller to discuss further details.

Year 3 & 4
Year 3 are getting ready for their carnival parade on Saturday morning. Let’s hope the weather is good as they have been making
some wonderful things for it, which we want to be able to share with the rest of Winton.
If you are able to come and cheer us on, the carnival will be starting at around 10.30am and will be processing along Winton High
Street and then onto Winton recreation ground late morning/lunchtime. All Year 3 children attending the carnival parade must be
accompanied by an adult. A separate letter outlining final details has been sent out to all parents and children who have confirmed
that they are attending.
As well as their carnival preparations Year 3 have also been continuing their work with the other Septenary schools on Europe.
They have been creating some amazing flags developing their sewing skills!
Year 4 have also been continuing their learning about animals and have worked with
the RSPB this week doing workshops, helping them to understand the wildlife in our
area and also asking questions about birds and their habitats. They have taken part in
their own mini decathlon to also develop their understanding of the aims and
objectives of the Olympic Games. Next week, they will be developing their journalistic skills to report
on major events that have occurred in school over the past few weeks and think about alternative
Olympic activities that challenge thinking in different ways.
Year 4 raised an incredible £281.54p for the World Wildlife Fund from their Toddler afternoons and
Wear it Wild Day fundraising so a very well done to them for their fundraising efforts.
4DB also had a very successful class assembly this week and behaved extremely well with the fire alarm going off in the middle of
it! Thank you to those parents who attended who also followed our school fire routine very well too.
Mrs Lidster, Assistant Head, Year 3 and 4
Year 5 & 6
Year 5 have taken on Roald Dahl this week. After listening to the story, George's Marvellous Medicine, they have worked hard to
create their own revolting medicine. They have taken it a step further by rewriting the whole story to incorporate new characters,
new settings and their very own recipe. After reading some of their ideas, I wouldn't recommend taking any medicine from anyone
in year 5!
In Maths, the children have been working really hard to practice using formal written methods for addition, subtraction and
multiplication. They have been fantastic at using the method but the children need to ensure they are still working on their times
tables at home. Please spend just a few minutes a day
asking some multiplication questions to encourage
quick recall.
This week, as part of their ‘Lean in 16’ topic, Year 6 had a food tasting session with foods that
many hadn't eaten before. The children started by talking about the different flavours and
tastes that they already liked and discussed why they liked them. They were then given an
opportunity to try nine different foods that they might not have eaten before. The food
included olives, salmon, couscous, basil and radish. All the children joined in and tried each of
the foods - some even discovered their new favourite food. Their next food technology task
is to design a nutritious meal for a member of Team GB based around their individual training
needs. They will then be cooking their recipes next week in our courtyard.

Houlston, Assistant Head, Year 5 & 6
