Over the course of the next couple of days, we hope you will enjoy and engage with the diverse and interesting range of interactive sessions that will be co-delivered by staff and students of Bournemouth University, Cyberview and representatives from Malaysian and UK companies. We have developed an engaging and varied programme that will create and inspire unique opportunities for learning and collaboration that we can share here in Malaysia, back in Bournemouth and across the globe. It is therefore the perfect setting for BU – a top 500 international university – to launch the Festival of Learning in Malaysia. Mr Faris Yahaya Managing Director, Cyberview, Cyberjaya 3 Keynote speaker – Mr Peter Truckel Keynote speaker – Ms Katie Hill Peter started his career as a cameraman, filming animation and visual effects sequences for movies such as Blade Runner and Aliens. After 4 years of supervising VFX and running the motion control rig at The Moving Picture Company he began to direct commercials. Katie is Research Assistant at the VFX Hub in the Faculty of Media & Communication at Bournemouth University. She is a CG generalist with a particular passion for digital environment creation, and is a graduate of Bournemouth University’s BA (Hons) Computer Visualisaton & Animation. Katie is currently working with BU’s Institute for Studies in Landscape and Human Evolution to create a series of short animated films which will promote and explain the work of the Institute. In a career spanning nearly 30 years he’s directed more than 300 commercials - the majority of which have been complex, mixed media productions. He has worked all over the world, creating films and campaigns for dozens of major brands, such as Panasonic, Disney, Sky, McDonald’s, BT, Renault, Kellogg’s and Cadbury. His work has won many awards, including The New York Festivals, Clio, D&AD, BTAA, Monitor, Creative Circle and a Cannes Silver Lion. Since January 2012 Peter has been working at Bournemouth University as the Director of The VFX Hub, he is the co-creator of BFX, Bournemouth’s internationally recognised festival and competition of VFX and animation. KEYNOTE SPEAKERS 4 Keynote speaker – Mr Matt Desmier A graduate of Bournemouth University’s acclaimed postgraduate programme, Matt Desmier is a director of Think Create Do, a strategic consultancy working with brands and organisations helping inform their next big decision, and the founder of Silicon Beach, one of the UK’s most successful digital innovation conferences. Understanding the Malaysian creative industry landscape Rollin’ on rough terrain with RIMBA Racer Mr Hasnul Hadi, Director of Creative Content & Technologies Division, MDeC (MDeC) Mr Tariq Mohd Noh - Managing Director of Glue Studios 10.05 MDEC was given the mandate to expand the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) and to drive the nation’s digital economy in a more holistic manner. Digital Malaysia is a national agenda that is fully developed with a sustainable digital economy built upon a vibrant ICT industry, transformative use of digital solutions by government, businesses and citizens, as well as a robust enabling ecosystem. Networking, with refreshments for non-Muslim delegates 10.25 Levelling up from a local hero to a special “agent” Mr Usamah Zaid – Managing Director, Wau Animation Sdn Bhd 10.40 FESTIVAL SESSIONS 8 11.00 The studio has recently produced Rimba Racer, an action-packed CG animation series. Thursday 30 June Keynote BFX – a unique competition for students of VFX and animation Glue Studios was formed in 2010 and promotes quality animation. It first produced Tales Of The Ages, a folklore produced programme covering Malaysian, Indonesian and Cambodian folklore. A safe driving public service announcement with Astro followed in 2011. Glue has won many awards — Best Character Design Anugerah Karyawan Animasi Malaysia 2011, MSC Kreatif Awards 2010 Most Promising Start-Up Animation Studio, Astro NextGen Contentpreneur Awards 2010 Incomparable Animation Winner, and Malaysian Film Festival 2010 Best Animated Film. Besides working on the actual show itself, the studio has also produced merchandise and accompanying media, including a comic book explaining the premise of the show. Wau Animation is a CG animation studio formed on 18th March 2013 by a group of creative talents possessing up to 7 years of experience in producing multiple award winning animated series and feature films. 9 Ms Kay Stonham – Bournemouth University, UK 11.20 Have you ever wondered how writers get their ideas, or if there is a way that you could be a writer? The truth is, ideas are only part of the story, once you have a great idea it needs to be developed properly to make sure it reaches its full potential, and this is where many writers go wrong, relying on inspiration and forgetting the importance of perspiration. Creative writing exercises and brainstorming techniques developed by Edward de Bono, Linda Aronson and Craig Batty are discussed in this session and used to help you begin to see how you could reliably generate and develop creative ideas of your own. The Giggle Story Mr Zeno Gabing – Giggle Garage 11.50 Zeno Gabing is the co-founder of Giggle Garage and also the Executive Director of the company; implementing strategic direction as well as providing leadership and business management. Zeno is responsible for structuring international co-production projects and investment activities. Zeno has structured several Giggle Garage’s co-production projects such as BOING The Play Ranger (with Korean producers and broadcasters such as EBS, SK Broadband) which is now broadcasting in key territories worldwide, including more than 60 countries, Cam & Leon project with Astro Malaysia – one of the main media and broadcasting companies in the region; Katuri project co-production with Korean producer and state government in Korea, and the recent hybrid 2D/CGI animation called Kazoops – a co-production with Australia and UK producers. Kazoops is also commissioned by key broadcasters: ABC Australia, CBeebies UK and also a Netflix Originals that will be available in the USA and Netflix worldwide territories. Keynote Perceptions can be deceiving. What turned a Victorian tourist resort into the UK’s fastest growing digital hub? Mr Matt Desmier, Director of Think Create Do, Bournemouth, UK 12.10 The quaint seaside resort of Bournemouth was recently named by TechCityUK, the UK Government-sanctioned body representing the growing digital economy, as the UK’s fastest-growing digital hub. This took an awful lot of people by surprise, but perhaps it shouldn’t have. In this enlightening talk, Matt Desmier will share what he believes are the three critical components that have helped rewrite the narrative associated with the town and which could, with careful consideration, be applied elsewhere to generate similar results.
