Introduction
" h i s handbook covers the Volkswagen Topaz.
Gas System
This manual is for use on vehicles with a 30mbar gas system; do not use it on vehicles
with 28-37mbar systems. The gas system pressure is noted on a label in the gas locker.
Vehicle type
Auto-Sleeper Topaz is based on the LWB Volkswagen 1200kg T4 Kombi.
Conversion type
Panel van conversion with two berths, and three seats designated for use whilst the
'V'icle is in motion. Two upper berths, suitable for children, are available as a factory
. 'ced option.
Climatic
conditions
The Topaz is designed for use in temperate climates, and is certified Grade 2 in
accordance with EN 1646-1: 1998. Grade 2 indicates that the heating system will raise
the interior temperatures from 0°C to 20°C within two hours.
Historical
The Topaz was launched in February 1994, at the Birmingham Boat and Caravan Show;
and subsequently updated in February 1999.
Handbook
Please ensure that you are fully conversant with the contents of this handbook prior to
using your Auto-Sleeper. Any queries should be addressed to your supplying AutoSleeper dealer.
Appliance
Instructions
The appliance instructions in this handbook have been extracted from those supplied
with the appliance.
Automotive
Matters
i
\l automotive matters you should refer to the base vehicle instruction manual. The
^^wto-Sleeper conversion does not affect the tyre pressures in any way since the
conversion is built within the design envelope of the base vehicle. When referring to
tyre pressures, refer to the label situated on the O/S B'Post.

not trample about, or move rocks unnecessarily.
not frighten seals or seabirds.
not spear fish.
not spill detergents, solvents or fuel from boats as these c a n kill marine life.
When sailing, moderate your speed - the wash from a fast boat can destroy banks and
nests.
Live molluscs and crustaceans need not be collected as souvenirs - dead shells can
usually be found.
Shellfish can take years to grow and fines can be imposed for not observing national
regulations.
Do not pull up seaweed unnecessarily.
Make your visit instructive - not destructive.
Look at material, don't remove it. Take notes and photographs, not specimens.
Observe bye-laws and be considerate to others.
National Trust property or Country Parks have regulations to protect the wildlife. Follow
these.

Arrangement of Equipment
GENERAL
The design of the Topaz gives two inward facing seats and one forward facing seat in
the rear of the vehicle. In addition, both cab seats are fully adjustable and fitted with
swivel mechanisms.
SEA TING ARRANGEMENTS
Cab Seats
Both the upholstered cab seats are fitted with headrests (armrests are not available on
this model). Fore and aft movement can be achieved by lifting the locking catch on the
front of the seat and sliding the seat to the required position. Both seats have reclining
backrests, adjustment being by use of the knobs adjacent to the cab walkway.
•JWP/EL
MECHANISMS
The driver and passenger seats may be swivelled by lifting the adjustment handle found
at the outer side of the seat box and rotating the seat to the required position. The
swivel will automatically lock into either the forward or rearward facing position.
Before swivelling the driver's seat engage first gear and release the handbrake. Alter
the pitch of the drivers seat backrest to ensure that this clears the steering wheel when
the seat is swivelled. Swivel the seat anti-clockwise until the backrest touches the
steering wheel then slide the seat forwards until the backrest clears the steering wheel.
Care must be taken to ensure that, whilst swivelling the cab seats, that the slide
mechanism is not allowed to come into contact with, and to damage, the passenger
c'oor trims.
CA.RAVAN SEATS
Crside Dinette
- £ inward facing dinette is on the offside of the vehicle. The base of this seat may be
-•:. ed forward by releasing the centre catch. The backrest cushion is attached to the
-::.v rail for security. When used as a single bed, the settee base moves towards the
: e r e of the vehicle and with, infil cushions, forms a bed.

-13-
www.vwT4camper.info - a useful website for owners and enthusiasts of VW T4 Transporter Campervans
Adjustment to the length of the short belt is accessed through the base of the nearside
bed box.
Seat restraint straps are fitted as standard equipment to all forward facing seats.
Passengers are advised that it is a legal requirement for these seat belts to be worn
whilst the vehicle is in motion.
Ensure that the passenger cab seat swivel mechanism is locked in the forward facing
position before moving off.
TABLES
Two tables are supplied. A small table, for use with the cranked table leg, is stowed
behind the backrest of the nearside forward facing seat. It should be stowed with the
table base placed in the recess. The cranked stainless steel table leg is stored in the
drawer under the offside bed box. A large table is stored behind the offside settee
backrest. The leg, for use with this table, is stored in the compartment immediately
below the nearside high top window.
When the tables are required, the legs should first be placed in the appropriate floor
mounting and the table then placed upon them. When not in use, the floor mounting
hole should be fitted with the appropriate bung. The tables and legs must be stored
when the vehicle is in motion.
KITCHEN
AREA
The kitchen area is situated at the rear of the vehicle immediately forward of the
shower doors. On the offside is the stainless steel sink and drainer unit. Beneath the
sink and drainer is a full width storage compartment and the gas/12 volt/240 volt tilt
tolerant Electrolux RM4213 refrigerator. This incorporates a freezer compartment and is
fitted with electronic ignition and flame failure.
Immediately to the right of the refrigerator is a small sliding storage compartment
suitable for the storage of bottles and small consumables.
On the offside, opposite the sink and refrigerator unit is the two-burner cooker/grill. To
the right of the cooker unit is a drawer beneath which is a shelved cupboard, housing in
its base the Residual Current Device (RCD) and two Miniature Contact Breakers (MCB's),
the water heater mains switch in base of wardrobe. Immediately above the nearside
kitchen unit are two further storage cupboards; similar ones are found on the offside of
the vehicle. The electrical control panel, through which all 12-volt facilities are
connected, is situated at the top of the shower bulkhead.
SHOWER
UNIT
The shower unit is positioned at the rear of the vehicle access to which is through two
sliding doors, or via the rear tailgate of the vehicle. On the nearside is the Thetford
Cassette toilet behind which is a storage compartment. Above the toilet is a drop down
handbasin with hot and cold running water and a soap dispenser opened by a plastic
key on keyring.
Adjacent to the handbasin is the showerhead and tap assembly, above which is a vanity
unit, suitable for soaps and toiletries.
-14-
www.vwT4camper.info - a useful website for owners and enthusiasts of VW T4 Transporter Campervans
A full-length shower curtain affords further privacy as does a blind/flyscreen and curtain
fitted to the rear window. A roof light, with flyscreen is fitted; a twin tube fluorescent
light is also fitted and a foam backed bound floor carpet prevents damage to the
[shower floor when not in use.
In the event of the drop down handbasin catchment bowl becoming blocked, the
obstruction may be removed by removing the handbasin bowl. This is achieved by
lifting the bowl outwards and upwards from its hinge pin recesses thus giving access to
the obstruction.
The gas compartment vents must be kept clear of foreign matter at all times and should
be regularly checked for blockages or debris. Gas bottles must only be stored and used
in an upright position.
When the vehicle is in motion, the shower sliding doors must be open and secured by
two restraining straps thus affording vision through the rear window.
WATER HEATER
The Truma Ultrastore water heater is fitted inside the offside bed box. Refer to the
water heater instruction leaflet for general information. Operation instructions are to be
found later in this manual.
STORAGE
Storage is provided by cupboards, lockers, a drawer, wardrobe and bed boxes. Further
space is available in the overcab area and pelmet storage bays. A storage compartment
is also located behind the toilet. Items may also be stored underneath the cab and
passenger seats, in the cab door pockets and, in the event of the upper bed being
fitted, the side storage pockets adjacent to the upper bed area.
Heavy items must not be stored in any overhead locker or cupboards, or in any storage
area from which they could come free and cause injury to the occupants of the vehicle.
Ensure all cupboards are securely fastened before moving off.
Aerosols and highly flammable materials must not be stored in any compartment
behind, or adjacent to, any heater or heat source.
^LEEPING
ARRANGEMENTS
^Bipaz is designed as a two berth model, offering the choice of either two single beds,
each running longitudinally down the length of the vehicle, or alternatively a double
bed, also running longitudinally down the length of the vehicle.
Single Bed Offside
Ensure the vehicle is securely chocked and release the hand brake.
Release the swivel catch by lifting the lever on the right hand side of the drivers seat
base and swivel the seat (1) to face the rear of the vehicle.
Release the slide catch by lifting the bar on the front of the seat and slide the seat up
% against the stops i.e. as far towards the dashboard as it will go.
- 15-
www.vwT4camper.info - a useful website for owners and enthusiasts of VW T4 Transporter Campervans
Release the offside rear seat base catch by depressing the black knob found in the
black plastic housing in the face of the bed-box, and slide the seat base (3) out to the
second catch position, to increase the bed width.
Fit the infill cushion (7) into the space between the cab seat and the rear base cushion.
Removing the backrest cushion (4) will give a slightly wider bed.
Single Bed Nearside
Release the swivel catch by lifting the lever on the left hand side of the passengers seat
base.
Turn the seat (2) to face the rear of the vehicle.
Release the slide catch by lifting the bar on the front of the seat and slide the seat up
against the stops i.e. as far towards the dashboard as it will go.
Unclip the flap which secures the top of the backrest to the cooker unit.
Release the nearside rear seat catch, by depressing the knob found in the black plastic
housing in the inboard face of the bed-box and slide the seat base (5) forward, at the
same time, lift the gray flap on the front of the slide out assembly, and when the seat
has traveled as far forward as possible lower the flap. The block fixed back of the flap
will sit on top of the bottom part of the seat swivel.
Fit the infill cushion (8) into the space on top of the flap.
Double Bed
Proceed as for the single beds but before fitting the infil cushion (7) into the space
between the cab seat and the rear base cushion. Slide the base cushion (3) out until it
reaches the N/S single bed. Undo the backrest straps and drop the backrest (4) into the
space between the seat base cushion and the side of the vehicle.
To complete the bed fit the infill (9) between the cab seats. The front of this is
supported on a fold down flap and the rear hooks onto the front end of the base
cushion (3).
Overcab Bed
Release the clips holding the bunk to the roof and fold down the front board.
Slide out the mattress boards until they fit against the stops.
Access to the bunk is via the ladder supplied.
The bunk net should be hooked into position when the bunk occupied.
WINDOWS
All lower forward caravan windows and the rear windows (partly concealed by exterior
trim panels) are Volkswagen factory fitted units. The high top double glazed windows
are fitted during conversion.

The lower forward sliding windows may be operated by first releasing the locking catch
and then sliding to the required position. An intermediate locking position is available,
affording ventilation with security.
The roof windows are fitted with two catches and a sliding stay and are opened by
releasing the two catches, moving gently.
Under no circumstances should the vehicle be driven with the top hinged windows
either open or unlocked.
VENTILATION
It is important that all vents are left clear of any OBSTACLES, and are
clean.

,paz is fitted with a four-way roof light, with flyscreen and night blind, in the kitchen
area. This is designed to give generous ventilation when required. The four-way facility
may be achieved by use of the handles in the roof light frame. A further four way roof
light, with flyscreen, is located in the shower compartment. The dashboard fresh air
ventilators should be open whilst the vehicle is being used as a caravan or whilst an
unflued gas appliance burning. It is not recommended to travel with the roof vents
open.
BLINDS AND FL YSCREENS
The lower caravan windows and high top windows are fitted with roller blinds and
flyscreens. These may be used in either role or alternatively combined to offer a
blind/flyscreen facility as required.
In the event of a blind or flyscreen becoming slightly stiff or not retracting fully, a small
application of silicone based oil onto the roller mechanism will improve the
blind/flyscreen operation.

Never put bottles or cans of fizzy drinks in the frozen food storage compartment as they
may burst when freezing. Also do not give children ice-lollies straight from the frozen
food compartment as they could cause frost burns.
Most kinds of frozen food can be stored in the frozen food compartment for about a
month. This period of time may vary, however, and it is important to follow the
instructions on the individual packets.
Ice Making
It is practical to make ice during the night - when less demand is placed on the
refrigerator and the cooling unit has more reserves. Fill the ice tray to just below the
brim with drinking water and place it on the freezer shelf.
To speed up the ice making, one can spill one or two spoonfuls of water on the freezer
shelf to improve the contact to the ice tray. If you have more than one ice tray it is a
good idea to make ice in advance and save the frozen trays in the frozen food
compartment.
Defrosting
Frost will gradually accumulate on the refrigerating surfaces. It must not be allowed to
grow too thick as it acts as an insulator and adversely affects refrigerator performance.
Check the formation of frost every week and when it gets about 3mm thick, defrost the
refrigerator.
To defrost the refrigerator, turn it off and remove the ice tray and all food items.
Normally the temperature of items of frozen foods would rise unduly during defrosting
and so they should be consumed within 24 hours or discarded.
Do not try to accelerate defrosting by using any kind of heating appliance as this might
damage the plastic surfaces of the refrigerator. Neither should any sharp objects be
used to scrape off the ice.
The defrost water runs from a collector channel to a receptacle at the rear of the
refrigerator where it evaporates. Defrost water in the freezer compartment should be
mopped up with a cloth.
When all the ice has melted, wipe the refrigerator dry and restart it. Place the food
items back inside but wait until the refrigerator is cold before making ice cubes.
Cleaning the
Refrigerator
Clean the inside of the refrigerator regularly to keep it fresh and hygienic.
Soak a cloth in a solution consisting of a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda to half a litre
of warm water. Wring out the cloth and use it to clean the interior of the refrigerator
and its fittings.
Never use detergents, scouring powder, strongly scented products or wax polish to
clean the interior of the refrigerator as they may damage the surfaces and leave a
strong odour.

Fuel at low Temperatures / High Altitudes
Supply from Separate Fuel Tank Only
The heater works well on the same fuel as
your engine. Adoption of the fuel to
normal winter temperatures is automatically
allowed for by the oil refineries (winter diesel).
Difficulty could only arise in the event of an
extreme drop in temperature (as it would also
for the engine - see the vehicle instruction
manual).

Danger of fire and explosion!
I=-=I
Poisonous fumes!
Caution when handling fuel before filling up.
and when working on the fuel supply switch off
the vehicles engine and the Airtronic heater.
Operation with Bio-diesel
To avoid such a possibility, if the heater is
supplied from a separate fuel tank, the
following rules should be followed. At
temperature above freezing ( 0 or 32°F), any
type of diesel fuel or light fuel oil may be used.
At temperatures below freezing, fuel oils will
require the appropriate additives.

If no special cold weather diesel fuel is
available for low temperatures, mix kerosene,
paraffin or gasoline according to the adjacent
table. A separate tank is available from the
Eberspacher dealer.
For use with Separate Fuel Tank Only
Airtronic D2
Airtronic D2 is not certified for use with
bio-diesel. A mixture of bio-diesel up to a
maximum of 10% Is acceptable.
Airtronic D4
Airtronic D4 is certified for operation with
bio-diesel (PME) as per DIN V51606 in
free-flowing state when installed in normal
horizontal position (exhaust pipe downward):
bio-diesel is not permitted for any other
installation positions.
When using 100% bio-diesel during the winter

Failure to comply with the instruction or
operation of the heater in confined spaces (i.e.
garages) harbours the risk of poisoning.
The heater may only be used for the purpose
specified by the manufacturer and in compliance
with the operating instructions supplied with
every heater.
Operating the heater is not permitted when
inflammable vapours or dust can build up, e.g.
near fuel, coal or sawdust stores, grain silos
etc.
Switch off heater and wait for blower fan to
stop before isolating batteries.
When the heater or the heating system is
damaged, an authorised workshop must be
called in to repair the damage using genuine
spare parts.
When carrying out electric welding work on the
vehicle, disconnect the positive terminal from
the battery and 'earth it' in order to protect the
control unit.

SHURFLO FRESH WATER PUMP
General
Restrictions in a plumbing system may cause the pump to rapid cycle (ON/OFF within 2
seconds) during low flow demands. Cycling should be minimized to prevent pulsating
flow, and to achieve maximum pump life.
Pressure
Adjustment
To determine if adjustment is necessary, turn a tap ON to lower than average flow of
water. The pump should cycle, but its "OFF time" must be 2 seconds or longer. If the
cycling is correct, leave alone. If the pump is cycling rapidly increase the setting by
turning the screw clockwise (IV2 turn MAX.) until the pump operates for 1 second with
at least 2 seconds "OFF time". If cycling cannot be minimized consider removing the
plumbing restrictions or simply install a Shurflo Accumulator. (Your Auto-Sleeper dealer
will advise you.)
Winterizing
If water is allows to freeze in the system, serious damage to the plumbing and the
pump may occur. Failures of this type are not covered by the warranty. The best
guarantee against damage is to completely drain the water system. However, non-toxic
anti-freeze for fresh water, if available at local motorhome dealers, may be used.
Caution: Do not use Automotive Antifreeze to winterize drinking water systems. Such
solutions are highly toxic. Ingestion may cause serious injury or death.
T o properly drain the s y s t e m p e r f o r m the f o l l o w i n g :
i.
ii.
Open all the taps (including the lowest valve or drain in the plumbing) and
allow the pump to purge the water from the plumbing, then turn the
pump OFF.
Using a pan to catch the remaining water, remove the plumbing at the
pump's inlet/outlet ports. Turn the pump ON, allowing it to operate until
the water is expelled. Turn OFF power to the pump once the plumbing is
emptied. Do not reconnect pump plumbing. Make a note at tank filler as a
reminder: "Plumbing is disconnected".

To light the burner, depress and turn the knob anti-clockwise to the full rate position.
Hold the knob depressed and apply a light to the burner. It is necessary to hold the
knob depressed for approximately 15 seconds after the burner has lit to allow the probe
to reach temperature. Should the flame go out when the knob is released, the
procedure should be repeated holding the knob depressed for slightly longer. If
required the knob can be turned further anti-clockwise to the simmer position.
To turn the burner off, rotate the knob fully clockwise until the dot on the knob lines up
with the dot on the fascia. The burners on this appliance have fixed aeration and no
adjustment is required. Although each burner will support pans from 10 to 18cm, care
should be taken not to overload the hotplate as reduced performance may result.
When using small pans the flames should not spread beyond the base of the pan as this
will reduce the efficiency of the burner.
Grill. Although the grill does heat up quickly, it is recommended that a few minutes
preheat is allowed. The grill pan should be left in position to protect the base lining. The
grill pan trivet can be reversed to give a choice of grilling height.
Safety
It is important that ordinary safety precautions be observed in the use of this appliance.
When cooking, keep children away from the vicinity. Turn pan handles inwards so they
cannot be caught accidentally. Never leave fat or oil unattended on the hotplate. When
finished, check that all controls are in the off position and turn off the gas supply at the
cylinder.
If a smell of gas becomes apparent, the supply should be turned off at the cylinder
immediately.
Never check for leaks with a naked flame, leak investigations should be carried out with
a leak detection spray or soapy solution.
Maintenance/Servicing
This appliance needs little maintenance/servicing other than cleaning. All parts should
be cleaned using warm soapy water. Do not use abrasive cleaners, steel wool or
cleansing powders. When cleaning the burner ring it is essential to ensure that the
holes do not become blocked.
The control knobs are a push fit and can be removed for cleaning. They are
interchangeable without affecting the sense of operation.
The hose connections should be checked at regular intervals, and if showing signs of
wear, be replaced. The replacement hose should not exceed 1.5m in length, and
conform to BS3212/2/B.
This appliance must not be modified or adjusted unless authorised and carried out by
the manufacturer or his representative.
No parts other than those supplied by the manufacture should be used on this
appliance.

TRUMATIC-ULTRASTORE WATER HEATER
The Truma Ultrastore is a liquid gas operated storage water heater with an additional
230v electric heating element. It is fitted on the offside of the vehicle and is identified
by an external cowl. The cylinder and all main components are found in the adjacent
bed box.
Operating
Instructions
Always observe the operating instructions prior to starting. The owner is
responsible for the correct operation of the appliance.
A yellow sticker with the warning information is fitted to the wardrobe door. Read this
before use.
Attention: Always mount the cowl cap when the water heater is not being operated
and drain the water heater if there is a risk of frost.
Claims under guarantee for damage caused by frost, cannot be accepted
either by ourselves or Truma.
In the event of changing the water pump with one of a different type, ensure that a
pressure of 2.8 bar is not exceeded. (We recommend the Shurflo water pump model

RESIDUAL CURRENT DEVICE
This unit is designed to give both overload and earth leakage protection for the
electrical supply in your motorhome.
The MCB's (Miniature Circuit Breakers) are better described as mechanical fuses, which
in the event of an overload situation in the circuit which they protect will automatically
switch to the OFF position. After elimination of the fault the MCB is re-set by switching
back on again (against the spring pressure) in an upwards direction.
In normal operation these MCB's should be left in the ON position. The residual current
device (RCD) is fitted to provide protection against earth faults and possible electric
shock.
In the event of an earth fault causing a leak of current to earth, either directly or via the
human body, the unit will immediately trip and switch OFF the supply.
Only after elimination of the fault will it be possible to re-set the RCD to the ON position
and so restore the supply again. The ON position is upwards against the spring
pressure.
Periodically it is necessary to test the RCD.
This is achieved by ensuring that it is in the switched ON position with an electricity
supply connected. By pressing the TEST button marked T the unit should immediately
switch to the OFF position. Provided this happens all is correct and the switch should be
returned to the ON position (upwards) to restore the supply back to normal.

SEITZ ROLLER BLINDS
General
Seitz roller blinds and flyscreens are fitted to the windows. Some blinds have special
tensioning lugs at one end of the cassette, others the end of the cassette is used for
tension.
Operation and Care
Twin Cassettes. To raise and lower the blind squeeze the central catch on the cross bar.
To use the flynet, first lock it to the blind cross bar with the two small catches, the blind
and flynet are then raised and lowered together to give the required combination.
Before separating the blind and flynet make sure the flynet is fully recoiled, separate
and guide the blind to the required position, Do not allow blind or flynets to recoil out of
control.
It is recommended that the blinds are left recoiled in their cassettes when being stored
for long periods to avoid straining the springs.
Clean the cassette, side track and fabrics with clean water and mild detergent.
Lubrication of the mechanism or spring should not be required nor is it recommended.
If the metal components or springs require cleaning, do so only with WD40, or similar,
applied with a fluff free cloth. Use of other lubricants and oils could result in
deterioration of the plastics and contamination of the fabrics.
Spare parts for the SEITZ blinds are available through your local Auto-Sleeper dealer.
Adjusting SEITZ roller blinds
Firstly a quick look at how a blind works will help in understanding how to adjust and
operate them.
The flynet or blind fabric is rolled onto a steel or aluminium tube. This tube has a spring
inside which recoils the fabric back into the stored position.
The spring, in large blind assemblies, can be tensioned a maximum of 40 revolutions
(tensioning beyond 40 will damage the spring). Small blinds i.e. those with a drop of
less then 300mm have smaller springs and the maximum number of turns is 6.
When the blinds leave the factory they are pre-tensioned with approximately 12
revolutions of the spring, which should be enough for normal operation.
Example: for TWIN cassettes, if the blind is pulled closed, lets say 1 metre, then the
tube revolves 17 times, applying this amount of tension to the spring.
The total tension on the spring is then 12 + 17 = 29, which is still 11 revolutions under
the maximum of 40 for which the spring is designed. Total number of revolution applied
to the spring should not exceed 40 in all cases.
-54-
www.vwT4camper.info - a useful website for owners and enthusiasts of VW T4 Transporter Campervans
The fabric must be fully rolled onto the tube evenly and centrally between the cassette
ends before tensioning.
P
Method
of adjustment
for roller
blinds
Blinds with tensioning lugs. Locate the tension lugs at the end of the cassette. These
may be under a plastic cover which is removed by holding the cover and pulling off. The
angle of pull is at 90° degrees to the wall.
The tension lugs have a slot in them and are located into the cassette on a bayonet
principle similar to a light bulb. Insert a screwdriver, or similar tool, into the slot (the
tighter the tool fits the slot, the easier the operation), turn the lug clockwise and allow
the spring tension to push the lugs just free of the cassette. The spring can now have
more or less tension applied as required; follow the tension formula above.
Care should be taken in keeping fingers away from the screwdriver tip, to avoid injury
^ ^ t h e fingers if the tension lug spins free.
If there is any doubt to the amount of tension to be applied, it is best to release all the
tension and start afresh.
To release the tension carefully allow the screwdriver to rotate and the spring to uncoil,
keeping the screwdriver located in the slot.
Re-tensioning can now take place, which is a reversal of the above procedure.
Blinds without tension lugs. The right-hand cassette end cap has to be removed as this
holds and applies the tension. Remove the cassette end cap by removing the screws,
(with the screws removed the cap is a tight fit in the cassette and should remain secure
until released). Pull the cap gently away from the cassette (approximately 1cm). When
the cap is free of the cassette tension can be applied, or released by turning the cap. It
is important to hold the cassette and cap firmly as the spring tension will now be on the
cap. Tension is the same as for blinds with tension lugs. Please be careful when
carrying out this operation. If the end cap is accidentally released it will spin at a very
high speed which may lead to injury. It may be necessary to remove the cassette from
the wall of the vehicle to allow re-tensioning to be carried out.
The blinds are self-contained so removal will not release tension. If the blind is operated
^ ^ h e n removed from the wall it is important to make sure the fabric recoils centrally to
^ H o i d the fabric edges being damaged on the cassette ends.

Gas System
Safety advice
Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) has a stenching agent added to make it smell as an aid
leak detection.
If at any time a gas leak is suspected turn off the cylinder at the valve in the gas locker
and do not use the gas system until any leak has been eliminated.
If the cylinder is leaking it should be moved to an open area away from any drains or
sources of ignition and the site warden or gas supplier informed.
LPG is heavier than air and any leaking gas will collect at low level in areas such as the
bases of cupboards, bed boxes or hollows in the ground.
Gas cylinders should be turned off when the vehicle is in motion.
All gas appliances should be extinguished before refueling the vehicle.
Never allow any unqualified person to work on the gas system.
Introduction
The LPG system fitted has been designed to comply with the latest regulations
governing the installation and use of LPG in motorhomes.
Gas
Two types of LPG are available Butane and Propane. Butane is usually supplied in blue
cylinders and propane in red or orange. The system is designed to operate on either
and both will give satisfactory performance during the summer. Propane is
recommended for use at all other times because of it's superior low temperature
performance.
Cylinders
Cylinders should always be:
Stored in the LPG compartment.
Stored in an upright position.
Secure top and bottom to prevent movement during transit.
Fitted with a safety cap when not connected to the system (this applies to both empty
and full ones)
Do not lag cylinders during cold weather it will make the systems performance worse,
not better.
-62-
www.vwT4camper.info - a useful website for owners and enthusiasts of VW T4 Transporter Campervans
Regulators
A regulator is now fitted as standard equipment.
A replacement regulator if required must comply with EN12864: 2001 and should
provide an outlet pressure of 30 mbar for butane and propane. The gas flow rate
required is 1.5kgs per hour. Do not use appliances with a different working pressure.
Pipework
Two types of pipe are used on the system.
The first is the flexible tubing connecting the regulator to the low pressure nozzle and
this must comply with the requirements of BS 3212/1.
The second is the copper pipework connecting the appliances. All appliances are fitted
_with individual isolating valves.
Appliances
Appliances should be used in line with the manufacturers instructions and serviced by
qualified persons.
Ventilation
There are various ventilators fitted to the vehicle and these all form part of the gas
system design, they should not be blocked or obstructed in any way. Their function is to
provide air for the occupants and appliances and to provide an escape route for gas in
the event of a leak.

Awnings should be fitted so that any flue discharging into them does not constitute a
hazard.
Leaks
After connecting appliances/regulators, etc., check that there is no leak of gas before
using.
Propane and Butane have a distinctive smell and a leak can usually be detected
immediately by this fact. If a leak is suspected, extinguish all naked lights and close the
cylinder valve.
Maintenance
I ike any other pieces of equipment, your appliances will need regular servicing and
aning as directed in the manufacturer's handbooks.
Fire
In case of fire, try to turn off the cylinder valve, remove the cylinder from the fire and
extinguish the fire with a dry compound extinguisher. If this is too dangerous move all
people from the area and call the fire brigade.
-67-
www.vwT4camper.info - a useful website for owners and enthusiasts of VW T4 Transporter Campervans
General
Propane and Butane are stored in cylinders as liquids under pressure. When the
pressure is released, i.e., when the cylinder valve is opened, the liquid boils and gas is
evolved. Both gases are heavier than air and any leaking gas will tend to collect at a low
level.
The gas has a strong and unpleasant smell which enables leaks to be easily detected.
The gas is highly flammable and a small quantity of gas in air can form an explosive
mixture. Cylinders must be used and stored in a vertical position with the valve
uppermost.
Safe Usage
To avoid accidents, the following fundamental advice should be carefully read before
using gas appliances or changing gas cylinders.
i.
ii.
iii.
iv.
v.
vi.
vii.
viii.
Routine
Always read and follow the use and maintenance instructions provided by
the manufacturers of gas equipment. Should any soot accumulate on
pans, fire radiants, etc., or any smell be produced, consult a competent
installer on the correct maintenance and adjustment of burners.
Never check for gas leaks with a naked flame.
Always turn off the gas cylinder valve(s) or inlet to the motorhome or
other dwelling when gas appliances are not in use.
Never use gas appliances without adequate ventilation. All gas appliances
require a plentiful supply of fresh air for correct operation. Fixed
ventilators or air inlets should not be stopped up. Where practicable, turn
off all appliances before retiring to bed, preferably at the cylinder or inlet
to the motorhome or other dwelling.
Unless the appliance incorporates automatic ignition, when lighting an
appliance always make sure you apply a lighted match or taper to the
burner before turning on the gas.
If any appliance is disconnected for repair, maintenance, etc., ensure that
the gas line is capped off.
If taps are stiff to operate or appear to be a source of leakage, call in a
competent installer to rectify. LPG taps require a special grease.
Always seek advice when in doubt.
Checking
It is essential to check the installation as follows:
i.
Flexible hoses and tubing should be regularly inspected and replaced with
an approved type when signs of cracking or other deterioration appears in
-68-

ensure that the e n d s are well secured a n d leak tight.
Check the c o m p l e t e gas installation, for s o u n d n e s s at least once per
a n n u m , and as necessary according to usage.
All flue installations should be inspected, at least o n c e a year, throughout
their length for integrity of attachment, both the appliance and cowl, and
for perforation d u e to d a m a g e or corrosion. Flues should be replaced if
any sign of d a m a g e or perforation is f o u n d .
It s h o u l d be e n s u r e d that the replacement is of an approved type

Maintenance & Servicing
General
In order to keep your Auto-Sleeper in first class condition, periodic maintenance will be required
to both the bodywork, windows, upholstery and other parts of the conversion. This
maintenance should be carried out as detailed below.
Servicing
Servicing of the conversion is the responsibility is your local franchised Auto-Sleeper dealer to
whom all queries should be referred. Your local base vehicle commercial dealer should carry out
servicing of the base vehicle.
GLASSFIBRE BODYWORK AND ACRYLIC
General
WINDOWS
Cleaning
At regular intervals, you should wash the fibreglass bodywork with a recognised cleaner for use
on fibreglass gel coats. Should marks remain, use a cleaner with chemical and abrasion agents
formulated for use on gel coats.
Discolouration
Fading or discolouration of the gel coat is a natural ageing process caused by ultraviolet light.
To overcome this, use a mild abrasive, which removes a thin layer of the discoloured surface.
This will restore the bodywork to its original colour and surface lustre. Since discolouration
develops gradually, it should not be necessary to carry out this procedure more than every
three years. Frequent use of abrasive materials can reduce the thickness of the gel coat, to a
potentially harmful extent.
Removing Scratches from Bodywork
Scratches can be removed from both gel coat and painted surfaces. The method depends upon
the depth of the scratch, as care has to be taken to avoid penetrating the paint or gel coat.
Very fine, hairline scratches can be removed by rubbing across the line of the scratch with
rubbing compound. Slightly deeper scratches should be lightly wet sanded first using very fine
(1200 grit or finer) abrasive paper. Rubbing compound will then remove the flatting marks
created by the abrasive paper. For deep gouge type scratches, where the paint or gel coat may
have been penetrated, you should first seek the advice of your supplying Auto-Sleeper dealer.
Removing Scratches from Acrylic
Windows
All windows, except the chassis cab and luton, are manufactured in acrylic. Over time these
become scratched and their clarity impaired. An Acrylic Window Polish removes unwanted
scratches and blemishes and leaving a clear, haze free finish. Minor scratches can be polished
out directly.

Recommended
Materials
^^G3 Paste Compound:
This is a cutting compound and polish, recommended for use on painted surfaces and GRP. It is
ideal for removing the traffic film that builds up on glassfibre coachwork and not only restores it
to its former glory, but adds a high level of polish as well.
G10 Extra Fine Grade Liquid:
This is again ideal for polishing surfaces and removes swirl marks and very fine scratches. It is
less abrasive than G3 yet has the same polish properties and cleans and restores discoloured
surfaces. It is ideal for use on dark colours.
^ p a c k Top Hand Glaze:
This is ideal for the use on stains, vinyls, body mouldings and provides a long lasting high gloss
finish. It is resistant to carwash and abrasive solvents and is easy to apply. Economical in use,
only a small amount is needed to give a very fine finish.
Finishing Cloths:
These are very fine grade cloths, woven and thus easily washable that are recommended by
Farecla for use with their materials.
The above can be purchased from our Service Centre, Willersey. (01386) 853511.
UPHOLSTER Y MAINTENANCE
Cleaning
Upholstery should be brushed or vacuumed regularly. Fabrics should be wiped every six
to eight weeks with a lint free cloth and fabric cleaning fluid. Velour materials may be
dry cleaned.
Fabric Care
Fabric snags caused by sharp objects such as toys, nails, etc., should be trimmed off
immediately. Never attempt to pull them off since this could cause the snag to run.
^ ^ l e n e v e r possible, avoid exposing the upholstery to direct sunlight which might
eventually cause the colour to fade.
Fabrics with a velour type pile finish will develop crush marks in use - this is
unavoidable and does not affect the quality of the product in any way.
Stain Removal
A proprietary dry cleaning fluid will remove most household stains. However, stubborn
stains, such as coffee, wine or ice-cream may need pre-treatment with a mild soap and
distilled water.
9 Small marks in velour type fabrics can usually be removed by stroking along the pile
using a small brush and warm water.
-75-
www.vwT4camper.info - a useful website for owners and enthusiasts of VW T4 Transporter Campervans
We strongly recommend that before commencing any treatment an inconspicuous piece
of material is tested for colourfastness and shrinkage. If in doubt, please contact a
professional dry cleaning company. Do not apply cleaning solvents to velour piping,
otherwise the flock will be removed.
WORK SURFACES
Laminated work surfaces are fitted to the tops of all furniture units. Whilst these are
hard wearing, hot pans should not be placed directly on these surfaces, since damage
may result.
STAINLESS STEEL
External
COMPONENTS
In the event of discolouration of the stainless steel roof rack and ladder, this should be
removed with T-Cut or any other mild abrasive and the surface protected with WD40 or
a similar product.
Internal
Do not clean stainless steel fittings i.e. splash plate and sinks with bleach since this
reacts with the stainless steel and may lead to corrosion.
FURNITURE
Furniture should be cleaned with a proprietary furniture polish periodically. Any water
marks that may occur on the hardwood edging of the furniture units should be removed
by use of fine grade wire wool and furniture wax.
Heavy stains may need to be sanded out and the edging re-polished with a proprietary
varnish (Ronseal etc.). The high gloss finish is achieved by using wire wool and wax.
GAS
INSTALLATION
All gas vents and flue pipes should be periodically checked for damage and should be
kept free from dirt.
Blocking of vents or flues is extremely hazardous and should be avoided at all times.
Gas Appliance
Ignitors
It is advisable, periodically, to check visually the ignitors on hobs, grills and ovens are
sparking correctly.
Annual
Inspection
The gas installations should be inspected annually by qualified personnel. If in doubt
contact your supplying Auto-Sleeper dealer. Modifications to the gas systems should not
take place unless carried out by qualified technicians.
SEAT
RESTRAINSTS
Seat restraint mountings should be checked for tightness annually and re-tightened if
necessary to a torque setting of 40 Newton Metres.
In the event of any impact of 25 mph or over in which seat belts have been worn, they
must be replaced before the vehicle is used again.

WATER SYSTEM
^Fresh Water Tank
^At regular intervals, and at least every three months, the fresh water system should be
flushed through with fresh water. Furthermore it is advisable that prior to using your
Auto-Sleeper, the fresh water system is thoroughly flushed with fresh water.
Waste Water Tank
Since the waste water tank can hold foreign matter, it should be regularly flushed with
fresh water. To prevent odours working back through the shower and sink outlets, flush
the waste tank through with a small amount mild disinfectant.
Depending on the use of the waste tank, it is possible that this will collect solid waste
matter which in some instances may build up and block the waste tank outlet tap. In
Vms case it will be necessary to drop the tank for cleaning. Access is through a large
Jmeter fitting in the tank top. Once removed this will allow the tank to be flushed out
ran inverted position and all solids removed.

Winterisation
General
This section contains information on the winterisation of your Auto-Sleeper, particularly
when you may wish to lay up your vehicle for the winter months.
Water System
The water system should be fully emptied and the drain taps on both the fresh water
tank and waste water tank left in the open position. Likewise, all internal taps should
be left open and the water pump run until the last traces of water have come out of the
taps. Purely as a precaution, against very severe freezing conditions, the water filter
that is attached to the water pump on the outlet side should be removed and cleared of
all water. In doing so it will give you the opportunity of cleaning it, if necessary, ready
for the coming season. Remove all sink plugs to allow the water system to breathe.
Flush fully the waste water tank to remove any excess debris and waste material. Flush
through again with disinfectant as part of the final drain. Leave drain tap open.
Upholstery
We advise that any detachable upholstery is removed and taken indoors during
prolonged winter storage, particularly detachable upper bed mattresses and scatter
cushions.
Curtains/Blinds
To prevent uneven bleaching, and possible excess sunlight onto the furniture and
fabrics, we recommend that either the curtains or blinds are left drawn.
Refrigerator
Leave the refrigerator door open, on its intermediate lock position; this will allow the
refrigerator to breathe and prevent any unpleasant odours in the storage department.
Ventilation
There is fixed upper and lower ventilation in your Auto-Sleeper which is built-in in the
interests of safety. There is therefore no need to leave any windows or roof ventilators
ajar - indeed the roof ventilators have sufficient fixed ventilation to allow the interior or
the vehicle to breathe satisfactorily.
Exterior
Fit, where appropriate, the Electrolux winter covers to the fridge ventilators. Give your
Auto-Sleeper a good wash and polish before laying up, and apply a small film of
protective oil to the stainless steel roof rack, ladder and any other external polished
metal components. We would advise also that a small squirt of WD40, or similar
aerosol lubricating oil, is applied to the brake discs to stop any surface corrosion
appearing over the winter months.
-78-
www.vwT4camper.info - a useful website for owners and enthusiasts of VW T4 Transporter Campervans
Electrical
Remove the battery, if appropriate, from the electric clock (if fitted). If your AutoSleeper is fitted with a clock, and if it operates from the main vehicle battery, we would
^ a d v i s e that the appropriate fuse is removed. Remember, too, that security alarms (if
fitted) and perimeter alarms (if fitted) over the course of the winter could lead to the
vehicle battery becoming discharged and we would suggest that perhaps monthly, this
battery is trickle charged to prevent any long term damage.
Check electrolyte of both vehicle and conversion battery before storage. Disconnect
leads from conversion battery if no alarm or security device is fitted.
Windows
Open all windows fully. Check all window seals are in tact and shut firmly. Ensure
locks and over centre catches are applied as appropriate.
Automotive,
^ B W o w S e a d v i c e laid down by the base vehicle manufacturer. From experience we
advise that the handbrake is left released, since in prolonged storage this can, on rare
occasions, seize in the 'on' position.
Tyres deteriorate rapidly in ultra-violet light. You should consider therefore protecting
your tyres with a light proof material that will lead to the prevention of cracking of side
walls and premature ageing.

DEFINITIONS
Maximum Technically Permissible Laden Mass (MTPLM).
^ J h e M a x i m u m Technically Permissible Laden Mass is a figure given by the manufacturer
the base vehicle. It is the c o m b i n e d m a x i m u m permitted w e i g h t of the vehicle a n d all
its contents, both inside a n d out. T h e M T P L M is unaffected by t h e Auto-Sleeper
conversion.
Mass in Running Order (MRO).
T h e Mass in R u n n i n g O r d e r is defined as the mass o f the standard converted vehicle
with bodywork including the following:
i.
- coolants (oil a n d water)
- 9 0 % o f automotive fuel
-
w a s h e r fluid
tools
ii.
v.
- spare w h e e l
- crockery
-
driver ( @ 7 5 kg, l i s t 121b)
fire extinguisher
-85-
www.vwT4camper.info - a useful website for owners and enthusiasts of VW T4 Transporter Campervans
All other optional equipment whether on the base vehicle or part of the conversion is
excluded from the mass in running order.
Mass of the User Payload
The Mass of the User Payload is the difference between the MPTLM and the MRO. It is
the motor caravans carrying capacity for everything placed in or on the vehicle,
including the passengers. Please note that a driver (at 75kg, l i s t 121b) is included in
the MRO. Everything listed in italics below must be subtracted from the payload.
Mass of the Conventional
Load
The Conventional Load is the mass of the passengers carried and must be subtracted
from the payload. The "EC standard person" weighs 75kg ( l i s t 121b). The user should
adjust the figure according to the mass and number of passengers carried. Motorhome
Manufacturers designate passenger seats as being suitable for travelling, and provide
seat belts accordingly. Multiplying the weight of the passengers by the number of
passengers gives the Conventional Load. Please note that a driver (at 75kg, l i s t 121b)
is included in the MRO.
Essential Habitation
Equipment
For the purpose of EN1646-2, the mass of the Essential Habitation Equipment includes
the mass of the following:
i.
ii.
iii.
iv.
v.
vi.
- the LPG cylinders, full.
- 90% of the fresh water.
- the water system, full.
- the waste water tank, empty.
- the toilet system flushing tank (if fitted) empty.
- the toilet system holding tank (if fitted) empty.
All of these must be subtracted from the user payload.
Auto-Sleepers include the low voltage (230V) connection cable and the second battery
in the mass in running order.
Options, Personal effects and
Accessories
When options, personal effects and accessories are fitted or carried the mass must be
subtracted from the user payload. All optional equipment whether on the base vehicle
or part of the conversion is excluded from the mass in running order. Personal effects
are any items of any description carried by the vehicle.
To determine accurately if a vehicle is exceeding one of its maximum technically
permissible laden masses, the vehicle with all of its load (that is passengers, contents,
luggage and external load) should be weighed on a weighbridge.
You may wish to allocate the user payload to suit your own use. For example, to
increase the available payload, the water system may be emptied. If the vehicle is not
being used for camping the gas bottles can be left at home to increase the mass
available for other items.
Gross Train Mass (GTM)
If you are towing a trailer with your Auto-Sleeper, the Gross Train Mass is the maximum
allowable weight of the towing vehicle, the trailer and the mass of every item carried.
-86-
www.vwT4camper.info - a useful website for owners and enthusiasts of VW T4 Transporter Campervans
The GTM is given by the base vehicle manufacturer and is unaffected by the AutoSleeper conversion. Please check your driving licence to ensure you allowed to drive a
vehicle combination at this weight.
Maximum Braked Trailer Mass (MBTM)
This is the maximum allowable weight of the trailer together with its load, provided the
trailer has a braking system which complies with the local Construction and Use
Regulations. The MBTM is given by the base vehicle manufacturer and is unaffected by
the Auto-Sleeper conversion.
MPTLM of the Axles.
The individual axles also have MTPLM's. The sum of the two axle MTPLM's usually
exceeds the overall vehicle MTPLM, but this does not mean you can load each axle to
its maximum, because doing so would exceed the overall MTPLM of the whole vehicle.

this, therefore, may not refer to your particular type of vehicle and therefore should be
ignored.
INTRODUCTION
This entire section offer guidelines for the checking of a motorhome's habitation area
and to ensure continual compliance with EN1646-1.
It does not cover any part of the base vehicle, although there may be minor overlapping
^ B c h as tyre pressures, cab seats, internal lights, battery and windows) in a van
^ronversion. The base vehicle must be serviced in accordance with the chassis
manufacturer's instructions.
Reference should also be made to:Any owner's manual or equivalent supplied with the vehicle by the motorhome
converter.
Appliance manufacturer's instructions.
Driver's handbook or equivalent supplied by the chassis manufacturer.
A vehicle is accepted for service at the dealer's discretion.
Any defects, repairs, adjustments, cleaning or lubrication required will be noted on the
check list. The customer's approval will be obtained before any work is done.
Not all of the equipment mentioned in this manual is fitted as standard to every
motorhome.
This guide is published as an aide de memoir for dealers. Any work carried out following
check, and the sufficiency of the work in the check itself, is subject to the contract
^ ^ t w e e n the customer and the dealer. The NCC/SMMT and their member companies
are not part of this contract, and accept no liability in contract, tort or otherwise, other
than death or personal injury due to negligence on their part.

hinges for security and freedom from strain.
Locking of Roof
It is important to ensure that, when the roof is in the travelling position, it is safely and
positively locked down. Any locking retaining mechanism should be carefully examined.
Section 8 - Gas Systems
Cylinders, Regulators
and Feed
Hoses
Establish that the cylinder and feed hose is compatible.
Since the introduction of BS EN 1949 the gas pressures for Butane (blue) cylinders and
propane (red) cylinders have been harmonized across Europe. The gas system pressure
is now 30mbar for both gases.
The gas regulator is now fitted as standard equipment by Auto-Sleepers. Your supplying
dealer will need to supply you with the correct hose compatible with the cylinder to be
fitted.
Check cylinder compartment vents and gas drop hole in floor are free from obstruction.
Check seals on internal doors.
Hose and
Piping
Check any flexible hose is of an approved type. Check its condition and any evidence of
cracking.
The maximum permissible hose length is 400mm, longer hoses should not be used. The
hose length is the length of the flexible portion of the hose assembly. Do not use
external cylinders and or extension hoses.
Check piping for condition, damage and correct support.
Carry out an overall leak test.
Appliances
In general, the checking of gas appliances can be divided into the following:
1. Cleaning
2. Operation of controls
3. Correct flame structure
Cleaning
i.
4. Flues
5. Flame failure device
6. Security
Where appropriate, remove cover(s) to gain access to heat exchanger.
Clean away any fluff or foreign matter. Reassemble and test. Clean flame
viewing window.
-96-
www.vwT4camper.info - a useful website for owners and enthusiasts of VW T4 Transporter Campervans
Controls
i.
Check that all knobs etc. work smoothly and are secure on their spindles,
if gas taps require greasing to ease stiffness, use only approved L P G
grease. Check that appliances can be brought into service using the
normal controls.
Correct Flame
i.
Structure
Check that all pilot flames burn quietly and clearly.
Refrigerator: With the refrigerator gas control turned to maximum, the colour of the
flame should be predominantly blue.
Instantaneous Water Heating: The main burner flame should be of even height and
blue in colour. A flame burning yellow will allow sooting to occur.
•
'ens: The oven flame should burn quietly and be of even height, mainly blue/green
colour. If the gas is propane, the flame will normally develop yellow tips as the
burner heats up. If the gas is butane, a small amount of yellow tipping will be seen
immediately after lighting, increasing as the burner heats up.
Grill Burners: It is normal for the flames on this type of burner to develop yellow tips
as it heats up, particularly on butane.
General: A flame lifting away from the burners is an indication of too high a pressure,
although it may happen with grill burners whilst the frets are heating up. A yellow flame
will cause sooting and is an indication of too low a pressure. Providing the regulator and
piping have been checked and found satisfactory, the above faults should not appear.
Flues:
i.
Flues should be examined for security of fixing and for correct attachment
to appliances and flue terminals. They should be free from damage and
corrosion. Check for leakage of flue gases into the vehicle.
Flame Failure Device (FFD):
i.
Where fitted, FFD should be checked to ensure satisfactory operation.
After the appliance has been successfully checked, allow time for the
thermocouple to cool. Attempt to relight the appliance by turning it on
without pushing in the gas control knob. (Do not override the FFD). If
appliance does not light, FFD is satisfactory.
Security:
i.
Check appliance is securely fixed to the vehicle/furniture and will be free
form rattles. Where applicable, check that water pipes are satisfactorily
attached with no sign of leakage.
Protection of adjacent surfaces:
i.
Check that surfaces adjacent to open flame cooking appliance have
adequate protection.
Inspections:
i.
It is recommended that inspections are carried out by a qualified fitter
trained to, for example, CORGI (Confederation of Registered Gas
Installers) or Calor standards.

We regularly convert models from two berth to four, and also the reverse. In addition to major
refurbishments and modifications to the conversion, we carry out extensive insurance repairs.
For example, we have replaced a complete near side body panel on a Pollensa and a Ravenna,
a severely damaged roof on a Duetto and a complete off side rear corner to a Monocoque
model. Indeed we take so much pride in the quality of our work as our extensive file of
laudatory letters suggests..
