Thank you Canada
for loving culture
On September 28, 29 & 30, 2012, an estimated 1.6 million Canadians participated in nearly
7,000 free activities in 850 cities and towns* during the third annual Culture Days.
While those numbers are impressive by any measure and demonstrate extraordinary growth since
Culture Days began in 2010, they only begin to tell the story of this pan-Canadian initiative.
Antoni Cimolino
Artistic Director,
Stratford Festival
Chair, Culture Days
National Executive
Committee
Behind those 7,000 activities are an estimated 600,000 inspired, dedicated artists, creators of all types,
cultural workers and organizations who volunteered to share their passion and expertise with their
community, inviting members of the public to discover the cultural gems that exist in their own backyard.
And it is thanks to them that 1.6 million visitors, participants and audience members experienced
performing and visual arts, design, heritage and more from a new perspective. They met artists and
artisans, explored studios, back stage areas and workshops, and even created things themselves.
With the proclamation “I Love Culture,” Culture Days ignited a national network of cultural connections
devoted to providing Canadians with opportunities to participate in, and appreciate, all forms of arts
and culture.
This summary of statistics, testimonials, photos, tweets and more will give you a sense of the impact
Culture Days has made in just three years since its launch.
David Moss
National Director
Thank you to all who have rallied around Culture Days, provided feedback, completed surveys and shared
experiences. We hope this report inspires and encourages you—as the catalysts of this celebration—and
others to participate in this great celebration of arts and culture across Canada!
*3,009 activities took place in 362 communities during les Journées de la culture in Québec and 1,235 activities took place in
80 communities during Alberta Culture Days.

From dancing to dressmaking, music to mosaics, storytelling to sculpture, Canada’s
creativity now has a proven showcase for all ages and interests in all kinds of communities.

• 22% said they spent more time volunteering for them
What’s more, Culture Days is attracting new audiences. About one-third of those who participated in a Culture Days
activity identified themselves as being relatively new to arts and cultural activities.
“People who had never participated in the arts before found it exciting and
rewarding, finding a side of themselves they did not think existed. To us,
that is what Culture Days is all about.”

organizers love it too!
Among the estimated 600,000 artists and cultural workers
who generously hosted free Culture Days activities in their
communities, 89% judged their activities as successful
and 92% expressed interest in participating again in 2013.
Why? Culture Days is recognized as an opportunity to develop new audiences,
demonstrate what artists and cultural workers do, as well as meet potential clients
and audiences. According to independent national surveys conducted in 2012:
82% took part because they were looking for exposure,
80% participated to share their love of arts and culture, and
83% agreed that their participation provided opportunities to
strengthen ties with their communities.
Activity organizers also reported that their participation had a year-round impact,
citing their own increased enthusiasm for what they do as the most significant.
Increased public awareness of what they do as well as contact or collaboration
with other artists/arts organizations were also highly cited.
“It was a valuable and exhilarating experience for emerging
artists to participate in. It was a lot of hard work organizing
and presenting the show but the exposure, the connections
made and the people who attended made it all worth it.”
—Shawn Jordan, Final Fitz Video Collective (Winnipeg, MB)

86% of activity organizers received
support from staff, volunteers, family,
friends and/or local media. Many successfully
approached local businesses for gifts inkind and advertising space.
More than half welcomed the public into
their own creative space.

were 11,358 downloads of free resources, a 151% increase
over 2011.

More than half of the activities registered in 2012 took place in cities or towns where
there was a Community Organizer (typically municipal cultural departments or arts
councils). These Community Organizers provided invaluable support to local efforts in
numerous ways, including rallying and supporting local artists and cultural organizations
in registering activities, mobilizing promotional partners, providing direct promotional
support, facilitating connections, and offering venues and other helpful resources.
Indeed, a key benefit of Culture Days is the opportunity it offers municipalities and arts
and craft councils to not only fulfill part of their mandate to promote arts and culture, but
also to build communities that are genuinely engaged with arts, cultural and heritage
activities.
Among Community Organizers:
• 96% judged the activities in their communities successful
• 75% said the activities met or exceeded their expectations
• 79% felt that their organization’s engagement with the arts and cultural sector
has increased in the time since their first participation in Culture Days
• 92% are likely to participate and provide support in Culture Days 2013

marketing
and media
In 2012, the value of Culture Days’ national, provincial
and local advertising, marketing and editorial efforts
increased 111% to $3.8 million.
In 2012, Culture Days’ national combined marketing and media campaign generated
a whopping 238 million impressions, representing a 34% increase from 2010.
As Culture Days’ national print sponsor, The Globe and Mail provided nine full-page print
ads, an 8-page pull-out supplement leading up to the Culture Days weekend, and online
ads that leveraged their impressive web traffic to spread awareness about the event.
Meanwhile, as Culture Days’ national Broadcast Partner, CBC ran Culture Days advertisements
on TV, radio and online; its many media personalities—including Jian Ghomeshi and
George Stroumboulopoulos—also spread the word on their shows and at special events.
With these dynamic national partnerships, in 2012, total media coverage (Culture Daysrelated articles, news stories, photo features and event listings) comprised a total of
2,614 hits that generated an estimated 189 million impressions, up 45% over 2011.
“Happy Culture Days! Get out there, go to a show, take in
an opening, head to a museum, pop in on an artisan, do
something with smoke, tell a dodgy joke, use your fingers to
get that sculpture made, find that burning artist in you and
don’t be afraid…. and maybe, most importantly, take the
spirit of the next three days and keep it for the next 362.”
—Jian Ghomeshi, author and host of CBC Radio One’s Q

The 2012 print ad campaign featured endorsements
from well-known Canadian artists, including Karen Kain,
Rufus Wainwright, Deepa Mehta, Chantal Kreviazuk,
Wanda Koop and Jian Ghomeshi. While the national
marketing and media campaign was invaluable in raising
awareness of Culture Days across the country, it was
regional and local promotion across the country that
spread the word about Culture Days to the public in their
communities through newspapers, online promotion,
posters, newsletters, events and more.
Among Community Organizers who coordinated multiple
activities, most produced and distributed flyers, calendars
of events, guides, brochures and/or posters and placed
advertising in their community newspaper. In fact, 60%
successfully pursued sponsorship with local media to
promote Culture Days activities.
Activity organizers in record numbers promoted their
involvement through a range of means, including on
social media and with the free downloadable marketing
resources—poster templates, Marketing User Guide,
PR Toolkit and logos—from culturedays.ca.
web and
social media
For all things Culture Days, culturedays.ca is the critical online hub for activity listings,
practical resources and shared experiences. The website provides one-stop shopping
for Activity and Community Organizers and for the general public drawn to learn about
the activities available that weekend in their neighbourhood and beyond.
Culturedays.ca has seen significant growth since 2010 with user traffic increasing
by 60% over the last three years. As the weekend gets closer, so does the collective
national excitement—half the visits to the website were during the month of September,
proving that the incredible wave of promotion and publicity by a vast network is a
resounding success with the public.
An important tool for the network of organizers, arts groups and all interested in arts and
culture is the e-newsletter. On a regular basis, the most important Culture Days news
and information was shared with an expanding subscriber list of over 10,000—many
of whom in turn distributed the e-newsletter to their own memberships, connecting an
ever-growing community to Culture Days.

The Culture Days blog offered useful information and featured the best tips from across
the Culture Days network, from community workshop announcements to tips for studio
tours. As Culture Days continues to grow, so, too, will the blog, making it a destination
for the culturally-minded person to find inspiration.
Culture Days on social media has also experienced impressive growth. The Facebook
community has tripled since 2010, with nine times as many people sharing, commenting, and
liking stories and posts that promote activities and enrich their daily lives from last year alone.
The Culture Days Twitter community is also exploding—2012 saw 100% growth in new
Twitter accounts. With on-going news, inspiring stories and useful tips, the incredible
response from a wide range of Twitter users made the Culture Days feed an essential
place to be part of a dynamic and inspired group. Here’s just a sampling:

The unbelievable success of Culture Days 2012 was only possible because of a growing volunteer
network of over half a million artists, cultural workers, and supporters.
Culture Days is poised to become the event that will have Canadians in every community declaring
“I Love Culture”… and making culture a daily habit. The collective and unified participation of these
individuals and groups has made that an immeasurable reality.
