He's the good guy and must surely be the m o s t h a n d s o m e m a n in t h a t very successful twice weekly soap. In real life, Mike Gleeson is of course Seamus Moran, a very talented actor w h o lives right here in Knocklyon. Seamus was born in Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo, one of a family of four children, two boys and two girls. He grew up in that lovely part of Ireland with never a thought of embracing the histrionic arts. Indeed his first glimpse of the world of entertainment was his appearance in "The Sound of Music" and later in "The Golden Years". These shows were performed by t h e students of t h e local Christian Brothers School where Seamus was a pupil. At the time, it would seem that he was more interested in football. On completion of his Leaving Cert, he entered Carys- . fort College to train as a Primary School teacher. During these years of t r a i n i n g h e a d m i t s t h a t he was still interested in football b u t also to a growing love of Drama. This, he says, was entirely due to the influence of Marie-Louise O ' D o n n e l l a n d h e r p r o d u c t i o n o.f Milton's "Paradise Lost". This poem, said to be the greatest epic p o e m in t h e English language, was his first introduction to Choral Verse Speaking and t h e theatrical power of t h e spoken word. The following year, Marie-Louise invited h i m to play the role of "Toad" in A. A. Milne's play "Toad of Toad Hall". After leaving Carysfort, Seamus t a u g h t in m a n y primary schools around the country. His first venture into Shakespeare was a production of "Othello" for the Leaving Cert. He re-named it "Desdemona" because he has always believed that t h e main character in "Othello" is Desdemona, a part which he assigned to a ) 15 year old girl. This proved very popular, especially with the young people who could relate more easily to the character and plot. Kathleen McArdle directed the play. Interested too in history, Seamus decided he would go back to College to gain a B.A. In U.C.D. h e also became very involved with The Experimental Theatre it fascinated him, as did t h e Tom Mclntyre plays. In 1985/86 he played several parts with t h e Company, notably in "Baal" and "Parnell". Sometime during this period Seamus applied for a one year career break - a year w h i c h finally t u r n e d into five. T h e spark had turned into a flame. There was no going back. He joined the Field Day Theatre Company and spent fifteen months with them. During this time he toured Ireland for four months and spent five weeks in London performing at the Hampstead Theatre. There he played Carson, a fictional character in t h e play "St. Oscar", (this was also filmed) a n d also in Seamus Heaney's adaptation of "The Curse of Troy". From t h e n o n it was acting all t h e way. He has appeared in many productions such as the film "In the Name of the Father", T.V. - Parnell, the series by B.B.C. T.V. and Channel 4; Molloy in R.T.E.'s "The Governor", "The Hanging Gale", and "Ballykissangel" in which he played The Ambassador and J. B. Keane's "The Field" in the Gaiety Theatre. In November 1996 he joined t h e cast of "Fair City" for seven weeks as Helen's boyfriend. From there you know the rest and have probably marvelled at the phenomenal success of this Irish soap. Seamus is married to Eleanor, a Primary School teacher who is also an actor in her own right and a good one too. Although she loves the theatre she is not interested in pursuing a professional career, but is very much into amateur drama which she loves. They have two children, Katie nearly eight and Stephen four, and they are all very proud of Dad. Seamus expects to stay with Fair City for some time, but he is well aware of the lifestyle associated with acting as a career. There is not a huge amount of work available if one is acting dependent and many actors resort to writing or temporary work to fill the gap. Yet the pull is there - the chance to travel - the chance to reach the top. Seamus himself has his own goal and that is to do one-man shows. His ideas are very exciting and will no doubt lead to the success he deserves. Good luck to you Seamus. We will be with you all the way. Eileen Casey OLYMPIC OIL co. This is the room where the best plans are made and informal family gatherings take place. If you would like to give your kitchen a facelift but are limited to a tight budget look no f u r t h e r . . . here are some inexpensive ideas that could give your kitchen that 90s look! # It gets hot in the kitchen so choose some cool colours for your walls. Pale blues and lavenders are suitable for that modern look. # Update your lighting by changing that centre hung light. Recessed downlighters which are strategically placed will give that clean modern look to your ceiling. Low voltage bulbs are best. # If your kitchen tiles are starting to look a little dated and you can't face tearing them down, don't worry, there is another solution! It's quite acceptable to tile over your existing tiles and remember smaller mosaic tiles will help create a more interesting look. # # # Kitchen units/cupboards can also be painted with Dulux satinwood. This is a good quality paint and is suitable for most wood and metal surfaces. Add your own individual touch by replacing all cupboard knobs/handles with more up-to-date fittings. Some examples are chrome, stainless steel or even frosted glass handles. Create that fresh look by updating some of your kitchen utensils/accessories. For example, a new curvy kettle finished in chrome (available in most good stores) will really set off your new kitchen. It also won't cost the earth. Finally, if you are considering replacing your flooring a hardwood floor is a great investment. It is a durable surface and is suitable for heavy traffic areas like the family kitchen. Happy decorating... Historical commemorated on and the the Group her in a talk recently. Annie was born in 1873 in Sandymount of a Protestant family with close family ties with Cloragh Cottage in Tibradden. Annie's father died when she was eight years old. Her m o t h e r remarried. There was some financial difficulty from time to time. When Annie grew up she had a wish to become a writer but trained as a nurse in London and Edinburgh. She wished to be a Jubilee (or district) Nurse and to come back to Dublin and work among the poor of the city. It was during her time in Edinburgh, a time of loneliness and sadness that she first became interested in the Catholic Church. Having finished her course there she returned to Dublin where she trained as a midwife at the Coombe Hospital. She received instruction from a Sister in the Hospice in Harold's Cross and was received into the Catholic Church in Rathmines Parish Church on 15th March, 1907. Annie was assigned to various country districts. She was happiest when transferred to Dublin's inner city working at Charles Street. Finally she was appointed to the Milltown district which also included Rathmines, Clonskeagh and Dundrum. Annie was active in Cumann na mBan and nursed volunteers during the War of Independence. It was with a certain joy that she learned in later years that her father had been with the Fenians in the Tallaght Rising of 1867. Annie was imprisoned for a short while for her republican activities a n d was forced to resign from the Queen's Nurses Committee. Needing to work Annie turned to writing. The Talbot Press published her first novel Her Irish Heritage in 1917. About twenty more books were to follow, all best sellers. The Weldons of Tibradden and her autobiography, Myself and Others were among the most popular. Annie's later years were involved with the setting up of the Irish Nurses' Union, later to become the Irish Nurses' Organisation of which she was Secretary and Organizer until 1942. She rests now in the Tibradden area so beloved of her youth, in Whitechurch Cemetery. Suaimhneas Siorai da h-anam. At our first meeting following the AGM, a new executive was elected as follows: Chairman: Damien Fee (Lansdowne Residents Association) Vice-Chair: Bill Meagher (Independent) Correspondence Secretary: Minutes Secretary: Treasurer: 3. Traffic Wardens Needed at: • ESSO Station • Pedestrian Lights at Superquinn (near Dargle Wood) • Across Idrone Avenue outside the Church. The KCC has written separately seeking a meeting with the County Council in relation to: > The Southern Cross Route Motorway > An overview of traffic in all of Knocklyon > To request that the contractor not close Old Knocklyon Road's Intersection with Ballycullen until M50 is complete. Post-Primary School The KCC welcomed the decision by the Minister for Education, Micheal Martin TD, to proceed with the building of the school for the year 2000. The KCC will continue to use its influence to ensure that the construction work will start at an early date. John Lahart Kevin Geoghegan (Templeroan) David Hickey Pat Morey (Westbourne Lodge) Committee Convenors will be listed next month along with their aims and objectives. Damien Fee (Communications) (Chairman) KAPE Encourages Young Musicians PLANNING SUB-COMMITTEE The KCC, following a number of meetings with various interested parties, have agreed on a number of recommendations which have been forwarded to Local Councillors and the Local Authority for consideration. 1. Footpath Completion (A) Knocklyon Road: > From No. 8 Knocklyon Cottages to Junction of Woodstock Park. > From Esso garage to beginning of Houses at Dargle Wood (including Knockcullen). > The completion of the footpath on the western side of the Templeroan Road i.e., from roundabout at Templeroan to the Junction with Knocklyon Road opposite the cottages. > To be completed: Continuation of the footpath at Knocklyon Manor to the junction of Knocklyon Road at Delany's. The need for these works arises from the gaps in the present network and in particular in the interests of safety of the local children. The KCC acknowledges the excellent work being done at Boden Park and in relation to the development of Cycle Lanes in the area. Joyce O'Hara (front right) pictured with parents and members of KAPE at her recent "Musical Morning " (B) Scholarstown Road: From Beverly Estate to the junction of Woodfield Estate. From Rookery to Scholarstown Estate. 2. Road Works Recommendations > Idrone Avenue: Improvement of junction Realign Idrone Avenue at the junction of Superquinn to improve traffic flow from Church up to junction with Knocklyon Road and to provide extra lane. > Yellow Box at Superquinn > Double yellow lines to extend from the junction opposite the Church to the end of Idrone Avenue thus allowing a free-flow for residents and emergency services > Double yellow lines also from outside the Church to the Superquinn entrance. > "No Parking" Signs > 2 Lane exit from Superquinn The sub-committee suggests that, in the light of increased business and trading with all its attendant problems, it is the responsibility of Superquinn and South Dublin County Council to plan a new exit/entrance for Superquinn in order to help traffic flow. Mary Clifford would like to express her gratitude to her friends and neighbours in Knocklyon w h o purchased her book of verse in aid of cancer research. She would particularly like to thank Bates Pharmacy and the Church S h o p - the two main outlets in Knocklyon. A special thank you to those who purchased the book for " D a f f o d i l Day", and Mary tells us that to date the proceeds of sales of her book are in the region of £8,000 - and still selling. A sincere thank you to all who have supported this project. JOHN CAHILL MENSWEAR Rathfarnham Shopping Centre Tel: 4931371 Dublin was recently identified as one of the best fashion cities of Europe. LATE O P E N I N G T H U R S D A Y / F R I D A Y 9 P.M. DRESS HIRE SERVICE AVAILABLE POST-PRIMARY SCHOOL FOR KNOCKLYON! ommunion gS As the month of May approaches, the parish, school and many families look forward again to the annual celebration of First Holy Communion. It's a beautiful and appropriate time of year to celebrate this blossoming of faith of young children into the first fruits of Eucharistic life. The children are, as always, buzzing with excitement and anticipation as their teachers prepare them and keep them focused on the significance of the great day ahead. At the start of every year, teachers and priests meet together to begin d e s i g n i n g the First C o m m u n i o n Liturgy, building on the wealth of positive experience of past years, yet never content merely to repeat what has gone b e f o r e . T h i s year it w a s decided to plan an increased involvement of parents to add to the already meaningful participation of children, teachers and priests. Thus we hope, in a concrete and symbolic way, to bring h o m e to the children that C o m m u n i o n is essentially a celebration of Community; something they are not likely to grasp solely through expression in words. The change of day from Saturday to Sunday is also made with this all important community dimension in mind. It is intended to bring home to the children, and indeed to all of us, that the Eucharist is a Sacrament to be partaken of frequently, and intrinsically linked with the regular discipline of Sunday Mass as the norm for all Catholics. Hence it is that, on a worldwide basis, Sunday Mass has always been the most usual context for First Holy Communion. All change is difficult. All the more is this so when change is made from a proven positive experience to what, from the nature of the case, is as yet untried. As the one ultimately responsible for having made the final decision to change, albeit with the approval and support of priests, teachers and Parish Council, I want to express gratitude to all who have gone along with that decision, some with enthusiasm, some with understandable initial hesitation. Equally, I want to say to those who have found the change difficult to accept, that I appreciate many of their reservations, and regret the hurt that several of them have felt, and may be feeling still. Finally, I hope and pray that our Parish Celebration of First Communion this year will be a truly positive, uplifting and faith-building experience for all. Fr. David Some future pupils of Knocklyon Post-Primary School You will probably have heard the good news that our long promised Community School has been sanctioned by the Minister for Education, Mr Micheal Martin, TD and that a proposed o p e n i n g date has been set for S e p t e m b e r 2 0 0 0 . F i r s t l y , on b e h a l f of b o t h the "Knocklyon P o s t - P r i m a r y C o m m i t t e e " and the "Action Committee to Save the School Site" (ACSSS), I would like to record my thanks to all the residents in Knocklyon who supported the campaign to have the school built. Our t h a n k s are also due to M i n i s t e r s O ' D o n n e l l , Brennan and Kitt w h o lobbied hard to maintain their election promise to deliver the school for Knocklyon. As many of you know, this has been a long battle and one which carries huge significance for the f u t u r e of K n o c k l y o n and f o r its v i a b i l i t y as a community. We should not take things for granted however, but I am confident that with just one final push we can finally achieve our objective of having a community school which will serve both the child and adult educational needs of our growing parish. We must urge the Minister through our public representatives to immediately proceed with the building of the school to open at the earliest opportunity, hopefully September 1999. In this regard I ask all who are committed to securing the school to lobby for this opening date and to continue to support our committee's efforts towards this objective. Wc intend to meet with officials from the Department of Education for a b r i e f i n g and an e x c h a n g e of v i e w s relating to the design, size and operation of the proposed school. UF?U GALWAY CANCER HELP CENTRE When Sister Bridie Tuohy, a Mercy nun was diagnosed as having cancer over ten years ago she attended the Bristol Cancer Help Centre where she learned to cope with her illness, and live a full life. On her return to Galway she realised that a similar centre was needed here to help patients who experience feelings of isolation, hopelessness and fear of the u n k n o w n . She was the f o u n d e r of SLANU which offers a five day programme (residential Mon - Fri) of supportive therapies that address the needs of the whole person in an atmosphere of care and concern. This approach is intended as a complement to orthodox methods of surgery, treatment, and ongoing medical care. Apart from the physical symptoms, a great deal of psychological and spiritual support is needed to sustain patients through any serious illness. SLANU offers a programme including relaxation, meditation, visualization, art therapy, journalling, nutritional therapy and music therapy. It aims to create a supportive environment where people with a diagnosis of cancer or other illness can take time to explore: (a) coming to terms with their illness. (b) their own inner process and transformation. (c) holistic attitudes and skills for living life as fully as possible in relation to self, others, the environment and the source of life. (d) the value of the present moment. For people who are ill being facilitated in this process can be a really positive and life enhancing alternative to focusing solely on physical symptoms. Over the past ten years many people have been encouraged and cared for at the Galway Centre (whose motto is: "I have come in order that you might have life - life in all its fullness", John 10.10) and gradually branches are being set u p around the country. A Dublin group meets in St. Luke's Hospital on the last Tuesday of every month at 8 p.m., and it is a great consolation for people who have been diagnosed as having a serious illness to meet others who have made a full recovery. Recently a one day workshop entitled "A Taste of Slanu" was attended by forty people who came away feeling positive and hopeful for the future. I was fortunate to be one of thoseforty people, and I would like to think that any of our readers who are suffering from an illness will take a note of the day and time of the monthly meetings. They can be assured of a worthwhile and positive experience that can be of great benefit to them. Mary Clifford, Tel: 4941451 LAST TUESDAY OF EVERY MONTH AT 8 P.M. ST.
