Four Reasons - Bishop Miege High School
Four Reasons
to Select Bishop Miege
1. We’re not the most expensive.
Because of
strong parish financial support, Miege is able to provide the high quality Catholic
education you’re looking for without an exorbitant price tag. In addition, through
scholarships and financial aid programs, Miege does its part to help parents with
their tuition obligations.
2. We’re not the biggest.
With enrollment in the 700s,
Miege is small enough to provide personal attention to students and better opportunities
to participate, but large enough to be able to offer a large variety of activities and
academic choices.
3. We’re not the most exclusive.
While some
schools pride themselves on being exclusive, Miege prides itself on being inclusive.
As an archdiocesan school, our mission is to include and serve students and families
of different income levels, backgrounds, ethnicities and ability levels. This inclusion of
a mix of families provides our students valuable preparation to meet the challenges of
an ever-shrinking world.
4. We’re simply the best.

BISHOP MIEGE HIGH SCHOOL
ACADEMICS
71 percent of Miege faculty possess
a Master’s degree or higher. With a
17:1 student-to-teacher ratio, Miege
offers ideal classroom sizes, while
allowing faculty to give extra time
and individual attention.
In addition, 50 percent of Miege
faculty has taught for 10 years or
more at Miege, providing continuity
and stability, and demonstrating a
long-term investment in the school
and its students.
Students may earn college credit by
taking advanced placement classes at
Miege and taking the AP exams in May.
Advanced Placement credits are widely
accepted, but colleges and college
departments vary considerably on score
requirements and credit awarded.
College Credit
Miege students may participate in dual
enrollment (the College Now program)
by attending approved classes at
Miege for which college credit may
be obtained at Johnson County
Community College and Benedictine
College. More than 60 college credit
hours are available through course
topics in English, math, history, art,
science, German, Spanish and French.
It is not unusual for a Miegian to
graduate having earned one or two
semesters of college credit.
Expanded Curriculum
Students may include in their daily
schedule rigorous online courses, such
as macroeconomics, AP computer
science, Latin and Chinese.
Top-notch Programs
For 13 of the past 15 years, the Debate
squad has earned either first or second
place at State, and Miege is ranked as
one of the top programs in the nation
by the National Forensic League.
The Stag Robotics Team constructs
a robot in just six weeks and competes
in the FIRST competition. The club
is turning into much more than a
game for some members. Numerous
students have received scholarships
based on their Robotics experiences.

INCLUSION
Higher ACT scores translate directly into
more scholarship offers, financial assistance
and college acceptance opportunities.
In most cases (math, reading, science
reasoning and English), an ACT score
can be raised one point by answering 1-2
additional questions correctly. Even an
improvement that small can make a huge
difference in scholarship amounts. For
instance, at a midwest private college, a 27
can net $8,000 more than a 26.

SPIRITUALITY
Because about 90 percent of most colleges’
admission decisions and scholarship
awards factor in student ACT scores, in
2005 Miege initiated a comprehensive
ACT preparation program.
By using test results, lessons are
designed and embedded into the current
curriculum to enhance students’ basic
skills and test-taking abilities. This is
the only three-year comprehensive ACT
preparation program in the area, and
is designed to give Miege students a
measurable advantage in their pursuit of
a college education.

“Faith is the realization of what is hoped for,
and evidence of things not seen.”
— Hebrews 11:1
The Campus Ministry Team is
responsible for planning liturgies,
peer ministry, service projects,
prayer groups and retreats. Around
300 students each year participate,
meeting regularly during activity
period and before and after school.
In addition, each year dozens of
students travel around the country
for mission trips to help those in need.
Faculty Faith Formation
Much like a child’s faith formation
at home begins with his or her
parents, at school that very important
responsibility belongs to the faculty
and staff. All teachers present
Catholic Infusion lessons in their
regular classes, and faculty members
continue their study of the Catechism
with eight half-days dedicated to
faith formation. On these days,
faculty focuses on the four pillars of
faith formation: Interior Formation,
Intellectual Formation, Community
Building and Planning for the
Apostolate. This program of faith
formation is designed to deepen
the faculty’s relationship with Jesus
Christ to truly make Bishop Miege a
faith-based environment.

Catholic High School Education is Essential
A recent study shows Sunday Mass attendance is twice as
high for Catholic secondary school students, compared
to those who only attended Catholic elementary school.
“My faith is a big part of who I am
and who I want to be, and coming to
a school that’s willing to nurture my
faith and make it even stronger is very
important to me.

Growing the Faith
The Miege student is guided through
a series of theological studies
throughout his or her high school
experience, with required Theology
classes across all grades. The 20122013 Theology curriculum consists
of the following: The Revelation
of Jesus Christ in Scripture, Jesus
Christ’s Mission Continues in the
Church, Sacraments as Privileged
Encounters with Jesus Christ, Life
in Christ (Morality), Theology of the
Body, Responding to the Call of Jesus
Christ, and Living as a Disciple of
Jesus Christ in Society.
LIVING FAITH
Learning the Faith
Liturgy is celebrated in a variety of
settings, including the total school
community, grade level, class retreats
and individual theology classes. Allschool liturgy is celebrated monthly in
the gym and Mass is held in our chapel
on a weekly basis.  Students participate
in the sacrament of reconciliation,
and private reconciliation is also
available by making an appointment
with our chaplain. Two communal
reconciliation services are held each
year for all students during Advent and
Lent. Adoration is done throughout the
year, and twice in all-school settings.

Called to Serve
Service Requirements
The Community Service Program
requirement is an important part of the
Catholic Education Program at Miege,
giving students the opportunity to
learn about and to serve those who are
in need. Students must earn 80 hours
of service over four years, including
40 hours serving those who are less
fortunate, with the vast majority of
students exceeding these requirements.
activities
Miege students have earned a
national reputation for being deeply
committed to serving others, and this
commitment to service has not gone
unnoticed. For several years, Miege
has been named a National School of
Service, and USA Today has profiled
a group of Miege students who spent
their spring break volunteering in
Louisiana. Because of Miege’s track
record of mission trips, the National
Relief Network often contacts the
school to put together trips to help
hurricane victims.
Facilities
More than 300 students participate in
the Campus Ministry Program, and
many of those students choose to live
out their faith by going on mission
trips to help others around the country.
Recent trips have taken Miegians to
tornado- and hurricane-ravaged areas
of Joplin, MO, New Orleans, Alabama
and Mississippi, and other groups have
traveled to Chicago and West Virginia.
Students regularly give up their spring
breaks and Christmas vacations, as
well as weeks during the summer, to
help others.

Being true to our mission as an
Archdiocesan school, Miege serves
both ends of the academic spectrum
and everything in between. The ACT

growth of all students. In addition,
course phasing places students in
classes where they are challenged, yet

Income Levels
Cultural Backgrounds
Because of our affordable tuition
and extensive financial assistance
programs, we include families of
different income levels.
Our student community represents a
mix of cultural backgrounds:
• 78% Caucasian • 13% Hispanic
• 5% African American • 2% Asian.

Students come from all over the

families recognize the educational
value of learning to work together
with students of various backgrounds.
Ability Levels
between single-gender and co-ed
schools, there are many important
advantages to co-education, including:
The embracement of diversity and
equality; opportunities to practice
leadership in mixed-gender settings;
respectful, supportive friendships
with both genders; and structured
preparation for students’ future co-ed
lives in their families and workplaces.
INCLUSION
At Miege, we pride ourselves on being
inclusive, as evidenced by our mix of
student backgrounds, cultures and
abilities. An enriching mix of student
backgrounds has been a hallmark of
Bishop Miege since its inception. Bill
Dunn Jr., a 1966 Miege grad and a past
Miege parent, remembers the varied
environment Miege enjoyed when he
was a student, as it still has today. He
said he learned a lot from working

improvements on proven ways to increase
student achievement.
Every classroom at Bishop Miege comes
equipped with state-of-the-art technology in
the form of SMART Boards. These multimedia
devices look like dry erase boards, but allow
teachers to open video and Web sites, save
their hand-written notes and even tape their
lectures.
While laptop computers and iPads have many
great benefits, teaching is a human experience.
Real engagement comes from great teachers
with interesting lesson plans. Students have
access to computer labs and clusters throughout
the building. While fully utilizing technology
in all areas of curriculum, Miege chooses not to
provide laptops for each student, opting instead
for classroom instruction that promotes human
interaction and creative thinking.
