the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in
recognition of their exceptional achievement on the
college-level Advanced Placement Program (AP) exams.
Seven new teachers are joining the GDS Middle School.
Barry Ellison and Kristen Salman will teach physical
education, and Ninoshka Nowlin will teach art. Clarissa

further develop GDS’ volunteer efforts in the community.
GDS Boards Participate
in Diversity Workshop
Greensboro Day School’s Board of Trustees and Parents’
Association board members took part in a day-long
diversity workshop on August 24. The workshop is part of
the school’s on-going effort to create and sustain a diverse
and inclusive school community. The workshop was led by
Tracy Brown, a national speaker and consultant on diversity
in the workplace.
GDS Board Chair, Ed Cone ’80 said, “The (Greensboro Day
School) case for diversity is straightforward: our mission is to
prepare students for college and life beyond. Our city, county,
nation and world are not homogeneous places, and our school
should reflect the reality of our dynamic, interconnected
culture by attracting qualified students from a broad range of
backgrounds. Widening the talent pool from which we draw
will improve the quality of a GDS education.”
These students took AP exams in May 2007 after
completing challenging college-level courses at
Greensboro Day School. The College Board recognizes
several levels of achievement based on student’s
performance on AP exams.
Eighteen students qualified for the AP Scholar with
Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least
3.5 on all AP exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on
five or more of these exams. These students are: Benjamin
Altheimer, Anna Bernhardt, Anna Cassell, Sarah Dougherty,
Matthew Fore, Nicholas Gittin, Nicholas Grosman, Laura
Hoxworth, Robert Kaplan, Megan Leong, Emma Lepri,
Kara Li, Warren May, Michael McAdams, Mica Medoff,
Charles Roer, Seth Shannin, and Catherine Stone.
Seventeen Greensboro Day School students qualified for
the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average
grade of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and grades
of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. These
students are: Ashley Avera, William Caffrey, Ally Chrystal,
Catherine Easter, Robert Holcombe, Scott Jackson, Adam
Kritzer, Elizabeth Latham, Wendy Lin, William Pugh,
Lauren Schneider, Kelley Snider, Shira Solomon, Bevin
Williams, Randall Wink, Chung Wong, and Lucy Zuraw.
Nineteen students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by
completing three or more AP exams with grades of 3 or
higher. Those students designated as AP Scholars are: Brian
Au, George Bridges, Hilary Dentler, Margaret Duda, Anis
Hoffman, Lauren Howell, Katherine Johnson, Lee Jones,

Five Qualify for National
Merit Scholarship
Five members of Greensboro Day School’s Class of 2008
qualified as National Merit Scholarship semifinalists.
Seth Shannin, Jonathan McClure, Benjamin Altheimer,
Tris Nagy, and Kara Li scored in the top one percent of
students in the country who took the PSAT during their
junior year. Over the next three months, they will compete
to become finalists in the scholarship program.
The World Comes to GDS
Greensboro Day School has the world at our fingertips
thanks to the amazing work of Greensboro artist Frank
Russell. As part of the faculty’s Improvement of Instruction
retreat in September, Russell built a 5-foot, 3-D sculpture of
the world on site. The globe will remain a part of our campus
as a permanent reminder of the importance of sustaining
the Earth’s resources (this year’s retreat topic). Classes in all
divisions have already spent time examining the sculpture
that is constructed entirely of recycled materials.
Senior Award
Greensboro Day School senior Spencer
Kuzmier has been designated a winner
of the Caltech Signature Award. As
a world leader in scientific research,
engineering and education, Caltech
seeks to acknowledge students across Spencer Kuzmier ’08
the country who distinguish themselves
in science and technology. This award especially recognizes
innovative and creative thinking or problem solving, the
motivation to go beyond what is required or expected, and
curiosity and joy of discovery in mathematics, the sciences
or related fields.

Buddies Battle Bullying
As part of an anti-bullying campaign, Greensboro Day School 8th graders helped 2nd graders create a craft representing one
of two books they read together. The books, “Toestomper and the Caterpillar” and “Hey, Little Ant,” encourage readers to help
people instead of hurt them. This annual campaign promotes friendship and literacy.
Going Seuss-Crazy!
Greensboro Day School Middle School thespians launched their annual 2nd through 5th grade book challenge in
September. Each year, Middle School drama students challenge Lower School students to read books that pertain to
their spring musical. This year’s theme, “Dr. Seuss,” relates to the Middle School production of Seussical, Jr. in February.
Winning participants will be treated to prize packages that include tickets to the Middle School production, as well as
a party with the cast members.
Previous themes included “Belle’s Book Challenge,” for the 2005-2006 Beauty and the Beast production and “Reading is
Cool,” for last year’s production of High School Musical.

Field Hockey
Celebrates a Decade
The Bengal field hockey team celebrated ten years of hockey
at GDS this year. They finished 14-6 and were ranked 4th
going into the state tournament. The Bengals defeated
#5 Durham Academy in the first round before falling to
Charlotte Country Day in the semi-finals.
This year’s squad is graduating 11 seniors; Katie Cohen, Sam
Cranford, Chrissie Walker, Julianne Howard, Lucy Zuraw,
Caroline Perkins, Julianna King, Ginny Shogry Sarah Peck,
Emily McDaid and manager, Marty Buxton. However, with
returning juniors, Andie MacDonald, Elizabeth Buxton and
Pauline Weissman and returning sophomores, Caroline
Brown, Caroline Strong, Alexandra Fortune and Lilly Cohen
the team has a solid foundation to build upon for next year.
Five seniors were selected to the all-conference team: Emily
McDaid, Katie Cohen, Lucy Zuraw, Ginny Shogry and
Julianna King. Emily and Katie were also selected to the allstate team. -- Karen Buxton, head coach
Running Strong
Girls
The 2007 GDS girls’ cross country team had a
successful season despite being small in numbers and short on
experience. This year’s team had no seniors, two juniors, two
sophomores, and five freshmen. Despite their youth, the girls
managed to compile a regular season record of 10-2. The team was
led by sophomore Frances Dougherty, who won four individual
races during the season and earned all-conference and all-state
honors, including the distinction of the PACIS runner-of-the year.
Along the way she set two school records in cross country, one for
5K (19:28) and one for 2500 meters (10:03). Team-wise, the team
finished 2nd in the PACIS conference and 10th at the NCISAA
state meets. Given the team’s youth, the performance trend should
only be upward for the years to come – Tom Szott, head coach
Boys The 2007 GDS boys’ cross country team had one of the
most successful seasons in their history, even though injuries took
a toll at the end. They completed the regular season with a record
of 11-1, with the only loss coming in a meet where the top eight
runners did not compete. They also performed well in larger
invitational meets, finishing 3rd at the Guilford County Meet, 5th
at the NCISAA Preview Meet, and 7th at the Hagan-Stone Classic.
Team-wise, they finished 2nd in the PACIS conference and 8th
at the NCISAA state meet despite being without junior standout
Patrick Nolan. Individually, three runners earned all-conference
honors, juniors Ryan Carty and Patrick Nolan and freshman
Nathan Vercaemert. Carty was the PACIS runner-of the year
and also earned all-state honors by taking 5th at the state meet.
During the season, Nolan set the school record for 2500 meters
(8:24) while Carty set the 5000 meter record (16:39). With six of
the top eight runners returning, the boys have their sights set on
challenging for a state title next year. – Tom Szott, head coach

Buxton Receives 100th Win
Greensboro Day School’s Field hockey coach Karen Buxton
earned her 100th win on August 24 when her varsity squad
defeated Cape Fear Academy 7-0. This was Buxton’s 10th
year coaching, as well as the program’s 10th year at GDS.
Sports Report
Strong Foundation in
Place for Tennis Team
This fall we saw the girls’ tennis team be more successful
in competition. We finished with a record of two wins
and eight losses, including great showings against Elon
School, Salem Academy and Wesleyan Country Day.
The girls worked hard throughout the year and always
maintained a good attitude on court. Our sportsmanship
was second to none and was noted by other players and
coaches. We had one senior on our team this year, Lauren
Cohen. She was a great leader and role model to her
younger teammates. We do have a young team and are
looking to build the future with some of the successes that
we saw this year. We have a large group of juniors and
freshmen, providing our team with a strong foundation
for success next year. – Peter Buxenbaum, head coach

Heavy Road Schedule
Hinders Soccer
The varsity boys’ soccer team had an up and down season
this year. The Bengals struggled early with three straight
losses on the road, but bounced back and continued to
improve throughout the season, finishing 6-10-3. The
season was a made tougher because the team played 12 of
their 19 matches on the road.
Some highlights of the season included a 3-0 rout of then #1
Forsyth Country Day School, a big win against Wesleyan
Country Day on the road. Two key seniors missed most of
the second half of the season with nagging injuries. Even
without their leadership and talent on the field, the team
continued to work hard. The squad is losing a number
of seniors this year, Charlie Pierce, Hunter Strader, Alex
Beaver, Will Seymour, Will Phillips, Ben Riedlinger, John
Gerhardt, Tyler Mohr, David Parker, Garrett Cook, and
Matthew Gorga, however juniors Robbie Kelly and Ryan
Campbell are ready to lead the team next year. Other
returning starters include Kyle Arnold ’10, Patrick Howell
’10, Patrick Redmond ’10, Charlie Keeley ’11, and Jonathan
Campbell ’12. – Jeff Lochrie, head coach
The varsity boys’ soccer team
Volleyball Looking
to Next Season
Led by seniors Kaitlin Smith and Heather Waters, some
important benchmarks were set and exceeded by the varsity
volleyball squad. All the girls improved over the season
and the team is in a great place to start for next season.
Newcomers Kelsey Ammondson ’10 and Morgan Vance’ 11
added energy to the team dynamic. The core of returning
players, including Taylor Floss ’09, Katherine Bernstein ’10,
Meredith Browne ’09, Claire Brennan ’09, Mariah Leath ’09,
and Kelly Carty ’10 will provide leadership and a thorough
understanding of the fundamentals to next season’s players.

Reach
A few months ago we published several articles in the GDS Magazine that shared Greensboro Day School’s global
perspective. Since last spring’s issue, more and more alumni have been responding and sharing how their GDS experiences
shaped their view on what it means to reach out to a global society.
Why write about the same topic twice? It’s simple really. There can never be enough ways to highlight our amazing
alumni and their efforts to make a difference in this world. Despite our location in a small suburban town in the middle
of North Carolina, we are learning each and every day that the little things we do here, make a big difference out there.
Our students and alumni all strive to do more than graduate from high school, go on to college, and work a 9-to-5 job
after college. Thanks to their education at GDS and the hard work of our faculty to bring global issues closer to home, our
students and alumni are more prepared to step out into the world and work to accomplish their greatest dreams.
From helping third world countries develop marketable products, to traveling to distant lands and learning that people
across the ocean aren’t so different from their GDS classmates, you’ll read more in this issue of the amazing feats our
alumni have achieved after graduating from GDS.

COMING
HOME
AGAIN
Seniors Anne McCarty, Rozzie Allen, Lucy Zuraw, Katie Cohen, and Lizzy
Groce came to Hong Kong and helped to bring a little bit of home to Sarah.
By Sarah Peck ’08
“So,
what would you guys think of the idea
of moving to Hong Kong for two years?”
That was the question my dad asked
at dinner one evening, two years ago. The question came
completely out of left field, and I will never completely know
why, but for some reason my sister, Haley, and I, looked at
each other and said, in some form another, that it would be
“awesome.”
It has been said that “you can’t go home again.” Once you
leave a place, it will never feel quite like home again. But
after leaving Greensboro to live in Hong Kong for the past
two years, having my world turned, literally, upside-down, it
was truly shocking (and more than a little comforting) to find
that though Greensboro, and more precisely, Greensboro Day
School, had changed-- teachers and peers had come and gone,
groups had shifted, things were most certainly different-- it
still felt like home.
I would be lying if I were to say that I had an immense world
view prior to my move. It was, in fact, rather small. I cared little
for issues that affected the world, and I was far more interested
in who was dating whom, than who was living in poverty. I
had a grievous lack of understanding of other cultures; I was
not rude or biased mind you, just as ignorant as one can be in a
relatively small suburban network. By immersing myself in life
in Hong Kong, experiencing the city and its people, traveling to
many other Asian countries, and living life as an international
student, I allowed for infinite growth in understanding a world
completely different from my own.
Never in my life had I been a minority. Blonde hair, blue eyes,
Caucasian, female, pretty run of the mill. But in Hong Kong all
that changed. I found myself sitting in the front of my chemistry
class, the only “white girl” in the room. I felt overwhelmed,
clips of Cantonese coming from one corner, Korean from
another, and Japanese from yet another- motivated kids from
all across Asia, sitting in this classroom with me, something I
could not have even imagined a few months back. I was more
than a bit intimidated. I will always remember a particular
conversation I had with a friend. We were riding home on the
bus together, his cell phone rang and he promptly switched
from our conversation in English to a quick conversation with
his mom in Japanese. I expressed my wish that I could be
bilingual, and he looked at me with surprise saying “You’re
not?!”
It is amazing to most Asians that Americans are not fluent in at
least two languages. By just acknowledging the differences in
Asian and American culture, and embracing these differences,
my world seemed to come together and become a much smaller
place. It is ironic to me now, that on my first day in class I
looked over the classroom and only saw the differences: his
first language was different, her features were unlike mine. But
as school came to a close I saw in those same classmates what
we had in common. Melissa Wu had trouble with stoichometry,

One of the more exciting things about living in Hong Kong
was experiencing the cultural traditions of the Chinese people.
From celebrations such as the lunar new year, or lantern festival,
where glowing lanterns are strung from every shop corner and
doorway, to Chinese New Year, with its
dragon dances, fireworks, red-pockets
and of course an extra two weeks off of

And I live by that, and try to find joy where there seems to be

mantra I have found the world to be a
much more beautiful place.

IN PURSUIT OF
Knowledge
By Trish Morris, Upper School Math Teacher
How
did I hope to enhance my
teaching with the Brooks
Sabbatical? What does it mean
to follow in the footsteps of ancient mathematicians?
Each year I try to tweak my presentation of material
to facilitate student understanding and interest. I tell
them that although I understand a concept, I may not
have adequate words to explain it. Occasionally another
student will be able to translate my words into a succinct
and understandable explanation. The more I work with
math concepts, the more I realize how much math I
really don’t know, much less understand. And with that
humbling fact, I have learned to appreciate what the
ancients – Pythagoras, Eudoxus, Archimedes, Newton,
Leibniz, etc. – and others accomplished in laying the
foundation for the pure science we call mathematics.
And that was my foundation for my journey.
The Acropolis at night.

As the Brooks Sabbatical publicizes, I dreamed big,
fantasized about learning the “whys” and “hows”,
and hoped to come back to GDS with new materials
and stories to help motivate my students and
energize me. Flying to Athens provided a “rush”
for me. Seeing the sunset, the full moon, and the
sunrise in a matter of hours was an experience that
seemed otherworldly. I arrived as the city was
waking up. The ride from the airport was a mix of
recent Olympic spring cleaning and ruins that I’ve
only been able to visually appreciate in books. With
a map and a lot of directions, I was off to explore
before the hotel staff could even get my bags to
my room. I felt like Dorothy in Oz during the trip.
Every time I thought I had seen THE most beautiful
and spectacular scenery, I’d turn around and my
jaw would drop even lower.
Moving around the cities on foot enabled me to experience
an ambience of the surroundings that is impossible if you’re
not physically present. Walking through ruins, slowing down
and enjoying the change in scenery, forced me out of my
comfort zone. But I didn’t find it uncomfortable. I found it
challenging in a way that pressed me to really concentrate on
my surroundings and at the same time, use my imagination.
The saying “a picture says a thousand words,” is accurate but
modest at best.
To walk where men

lived, learned, and

common notion in the
United States. Touring
Athens provided a
good starting point
for my mathematical

when I saw some of the
levels of advancement
that the ancients had
achieved centuries
and even millennia
ago. When drought

northern ridge of the
mountain range that
divides the island in half while another team started on the
southern side. At the completion of the tunnel, the two groups
were merely a few meters apart. This tunnel is considered one
of the masterpieces of ancient engineering. Samos is also home
to the famous mathematician, Pythagoras.
In the port of Syracuse in Sicily during the third century BC,
Archimedes held the Roman army at bay for two years with his
catapults aimed both inland and out to sea. The ruins of Pompeii
and Herculaneum, located between Vesuvius and the sea, reveal
communities from the first century with life-like art and even
precursors to our modern day spas. DaVinci definitely used
more than the usual ten percent of his brain power! As a man
of science, art, and engineering, his contributions to Renaissance
thinking and invention are unparalleled. In retrospect, the
persistence, the insights, and the stories that I was able to witness
leave me wanting to learn even more of math’s development as a
body of truths and language of science.
democratic. Santorini is the most beautiful place I have ever seen
in my life. The perfect light that reflects off the Aegean Sea makes
the whites seem whiter and the blues even brighter. Samos is
the Santorini for the Greek vacationers, a bit more crowded but
nearly as beautiful. I had not been able to secure a math guide
there. Through a listserv connection, I was able to meet a native
Samian who not only showed me around the island but treated
me as royalty. Phyllio took me to her apartment in Kokkaro to
meet her brother and sister where we spent an afternoon and

need to learn to understand and appreciate differences in nations
around the world as it shrinks due to advances in technology.
I’d like to think that I have a fairly healthy respect for many of
our modern conveniences. After visiting some of the homes
of early inventions and learning more about the times and
cultures that spawned them, I sometimes wonder why mankind
is not more advanced by now. From the engineering feats of
Archimedes and DaVinci to breathtaking works of Michelangelo
and Raphael, it might seem that we could advance no further.
But the next masterpiece, the cure for cancer, the mediation for
world peace will come from today’s students and those in the
future. I am grateful for my newfound inspiration and hope
that it will translate into a well worded question or enthusiasm
that will piqué curiosity and the pursuit of knowledge.

Maggie with Henry Masagazi (L), the Ugandan business man who
is now running the production facility, and Peter (R), the district
director of NAADS - National Agricultural Advisory Services.
I served as NI’s coordinator for FBP, which entailed recruiting
volunteers from Carolina and other regional campuses to work
in Uganda. In addition, I helped volunteers acquire funding
for their trips, coordinated sheller-construction training
sessions, and organized the logistics for travel to and within
Uganda. It was thrilling to recruit and organize volunteers for
an international project about which I felt so passionate.
The Wind at Your Back
By Maggie Salinger ’06
A
Finally, in May, we left for Africa. Along with 10 other NI
students and five FBP representatives, I spent five weeks
there, transforming the ideas in our 50-page business plan into
action. During the first two weeks, we concentrated on setting
up the production facility and training the local workers to
make the nut sheller. During the remaining three weeks, we
held meetings with government agencies, women’s groups,
t GDS, lessons about the importance of humanitarian
service and involvement in the worldwide community
begin early. My participation in community service
began with a local focus and quickly evolved into a global one,
fueled by a love of foreign travel and the philanthropic spirit
of Kathy Davis, as well as an eye-opening trip to Uganda led
by Laura Hendrix. By the time I graduated from GDS, I knew
that I wanted to learn more about the pressures of life in the
developing world and the ways in which I could contribute to
their growth.
During my first semester at Carolina, I joined a nonprofit student
group called Nourish International (NI), a non-governmental
organization (NGO) that aims to raise awareness and funds to
combat the deepest poverty suffered by a third of our world’s
population. Each year, NI selects an NGO that is working on
sustainable grass-roots development projects abroad, and, in
return for NI’s monetary support, the NGO provides NI members
with a service-learning opportunity as they assist in the project’s
implementation. Last year, NI collaborated with an NGO called
the Full Belly Project (FBP), whose goal is to diminish hunger by
designing and disseminating culturally appropriate technology
to developing countries around the world.
One of FBP’s creations that received considerable attention
from philanthropic organizations was a hand-powered device
called the Universal Nut Sheller. To understand the potential
impact of this device on world hunger one must recognize
that a half a billion of the poorest people in the world rely
on peanuts as their primary source of protein. Among those
people, women and children typically spend eight hours per
day painfully shelling nuts by hand, which is time taken away
from school, family, or other, potentially income-generating
activities. The Universal Nut Sheller - in spite of being hand
powered - is able to perform this task at a rate 50 times faster
than hand shelling.
Throughout the year, NI fundraisers on the UNC campus
generated over $20,000 - $10,000 of which was designated
for FBP. (The remaining $10,000 was assigned to a project
in Guatemala.) To supplement these funds, two other NI
members and I collaborated with FBP executives to develop a
formal business plan for the Uganda project which we entered
in two entrepreneurship competitions held separately by the
business schools at UNC and Duke. Our business plan won
first place at both schools, netting $21,000 to add to the funds
previously raised by NI.

and farmers’ cooperatives to conduct demonstrations and
promote sales of the sheller. These meetings created business
connections that were useful for the Ugandan entrepreneur
who planned to continue making and selling the sheller after
we left. All of our business transactions involved extensive
and occasionally intense interactions with individuals from
various levels of Ugandan society. Through these interactions,
I gained a deeper understanding of the types of cultural
impediments to well-intended service efforts. Since returning to Chapel Hill this fall, Greensboro area
Rotary Clubs have invited me to their meetings to describe
our experiences in Uganda. I am exploring with them the
possibility of joining an FBP project in Haiti where Rotary is
already supporting an orphanage. This collaboration would
promote such life-sustaining projects as reforestation and
development of renewable fuels, in addition to distributing a
more modest distribution of nut shellers.
Apart from the emotionally compelling experience of assisting
desperately poor people, my involvement in international
service has been unbelievably instructive. Furthermore, it has
reinforced my commitment to issues of global poverty. I am
grateful to the inspirational teachers at GDS who launched me
on this journey.
Being
Diplomatic
By Georges Saab ’85
“No really, it is not as hard as it sounds. Let’s start with when
and where you were born.”
I looked at the woman behind the counter in utter disbelief.
“Um, okay, Greensboro NC, January 5, 1968.”
“And when did you leave the country the first time?”
“May 1968”
“I mean for more than 2 weeks?”
“May 1968.”
“Oh. This is not going to be so easy, is it?”
M
y wife, Johanna, and I were at the American
Consulate in Stockholm to register our daughter,
Elina, as an American citizen. The form requires
that you list all times you have travelled outside the U.S. for
more than a short vacation. Thirty-seven years of frequent
international travel for work and pleasure meant the list
was several pages long. Many hours later we were on our
way, relieved to have become a family of dual citizens.
My family travelled frequently when I was a child, visiting
my father’s extended family in Lebanon every other
summer up until the civil war broke out there.
Going to school put quite a dent in our travel schedule,
however going to GDS meant that the possibilities for
learning more about the world around us were numerous.
From studying about different cultures like China, India,
Japan, and Africa in middle school history to making a trip
with the soccer team to Holland and Germany, we received
an education that was ahead of its time in preparing us for
globalization.
In the years since GDS, work has taken me to most parts
of the U.S., Europe and Asia. I have travelled to the North
Pole (Svalbard), the South Pacific (New Zealand, Tahiti),
and to war torn nations in Central America (Guatemala)
and Africa (Angola). I have witnessed the growing
technology emergence in China and India, and the quiet
technology revolution in Europe and Scandinavia.
While studying at Duke, I spent a year in England working
in London and studying philosophy in Canterbury. I also
toured with an orchestra which performed in Austria,
Germany, Italy, and what was then called Czechoslovakia.
Strangely enough, graduating from Duke with a philosophy
major did not instantly translate to a high paying career.
Luckily my concentration in logic and language combined

with David Gilbert’s early efforts in helping GDS students
understand computer programming made it possible to
transition smoothly into a ‘wild west’ area of technology
called Artificial Intelligence (AI). A short gig with a small
company in Oxford, U.K. led to a job with the premier
company in the field in Silicon Valley.
A consulting gig for IBM in Stockholm led me to move
there in ’94 – quite a good move as it was there I met my
wife Johanna. In ’96 some former colleagues called to
convince me to move back to California and help them
create an exciting new language called Java – something I
have worked with ever since.
We spent the next six years in San Francisco, years of tech
boom and bust. Luckily I spent the downturn as CTO for
a startup in Honolulu – the trade winds and soft rainbows
proved a welcome balance to the economic woes of Silicon
Valley!
Since 2003 we have been back in Sweden, where I am now
the managing director of a subsidiary to BEA Systems.
A large part of my time is spent ‘translating’ in both
directions, culture even more than language. Even in this
age of globalization, the lack of understanding for cultural
differences is widespread!
Throughout my travels I have marveled at the preconceived
notions that many people have about Americans. I enjoy
being evidence to the contrary whenever someone comes
up with the inevitable clichés about Americans never
learning a foreign language, knowing nothing about other
cultures, or being unappreciative of political nuance.
I consider it a diplomatic mission enabled in great part by
my years at GDS.

GUIDING
My Own Life
By E. Keats Webb ’03
A
•Das•E•He•De translates as “guide” from
the Cherokee language. Every evening after a
family style dinner a student is selected by the
former a•das•e•he•de to be leader of the day, to be the
guide for the following 24-hours. The selected student is
responsible for waking everyone up with the morning bell
at 7:00 a.m., leading our dawn meditation ritual Morning
Watch, gathering the community before meals with a song
or reading, leading community announcements and then
passing on the position at the following dinner. The bone
pendant whittled by the multi-talented art teacher and
worn by the chosen student symbolizes the leadership
role assumed for a day and also the program’s ability to
empower and challenge the students to become “guides”
for their own lives and those around them.
The Outdoor Academy of the Eagle’s Nest Foundation is a
semester program for high school sophomores nestled into the
Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Students from all
over the southeast come to the 180-acre campus to encounter
experiential education at its height. Like other semester
programs, the Outdoor Academy redefines the classroom
and education by expanding the walls to incorporate the
outdoors. Students will experience around 25 days out in
the field (hiking, climbing, paddling, and caving) which
complement their standard math, science, history, English,
foreign language, art and music classes.
I came across the Outdoor Academy as a graduate from a
similar program, the Maine Coast Semester in Wiscasset. As

a junior in high school, I left Greensboro Day School, where I
had been a student since Kindergarten, and made a conscious
decision to take the path less traveled. We lived in cabins
heated by woodstoves and attended classes on the 500-acre
peninsula in the southern part of Maine. Our natural history/
environmental studies class wandered the woods identifying
trees and birdcalls or testing water quality of local streams
or tromping on the uneasy grounds of bog moss discovering
new ecosystems.
I learned to be adventurous, to take risks, to become the guide
of my own life and to be responsible for the path that I would
travel. I graduated from Greensboro Day School in 2003 and
started at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that
following fall. I quickly became involved with a nonprofit that
I had already been passionate about for years, Operation Smile.
As a high school freshman I was drawn to the organization by
a powerful student presentation that allured me to embark on
a six year journey through numerous fundraisers, conferences,
and an international medical mission experience and leave
me with a valuable understanding of leadership, service,
confidence, and global citizenship. During the fall of 2002,
I traveled to Manta, Ecuador, with an international medical
team, and as a student I taught community education to
patients, parents and school children. Returning from Ecuador
with a greater sense of obligation to serve as a global citizen
and a new perspective of the world, I continued and extended
my participation by becoming involved with the International
Student Programs through the Student Advisory Board (SAB)
during my freshman year of college.
Keats on one of her many adventures.
“I learned to be adventurous, to take risks, to become the guide of my own life
and to be responsible for the path that I would travel.”
With the combination of my international experience with
Operation Smile and my personal initiative to influence
my own education and to be adventurous, I decided to
study art and culture in Senegal during my junior year at
UNC. I adjusted to daily life with a Senegalese family of
17 by actively learning. Each day my family offered pieces
of their culture and traditions through shared meals, daily
tasks or late afternoon conversations. I used photography to
further explore and better understand the new culture using
the process to cross cultural and language barriers. As a
culmination of my semester, I completed a five-week research
project during which I focused on the strength of Senegalese
women using glass painting as a medium of expression. This
project has continued to influence my artistic endeavors
as I have focused on religion, women and strength using
photography as a means of expression and awareness.
To culminate my studies as a fine art photography student at
UNC, I decided to complete a senior thesis, The Continuation
of Life. With the aid of a summer fellowship, I began the
exploration through photographic portraits and interviews
of female retirement community residents highlighting their
personal strength and identity while also looking at their
methods of pursuing and continuing life countering the
stereotypes and limitations of aging. The project evolved into
a personal exploration and reflection of age and identity that
focuses on my grandmother and me and the juxtaposition of
images of the two of us. I was able to learn over the year that
going through the world with a camera in hand is a lifestyle and
a way of seeing. It is the way in which I experience the world.
One of my undertakings at the Outdoor Academy is restoring
the gardens and getting the students involved. I spend Monday
afternoon work programs with a few students in the garden
along with Saturday mornings. Encouraging the students
to think abstractly while working in the garden, I asked, “If
you could be any herb or spice, what would you be? Base
your answer on personality and not just what you like.” They
thought for a moment and answered with rosemary, oregano
and dill. I would say that I am ginger. Ginger is a spice that
has a distinct and unique taste. Originating in Southern China,
it has traveled and influenced dishes around the world with
versatility different from other herbs and spices. Like ginger
my interests are unique, my experiences distinct and my
passions rooted. While I have been a part of many communities,
I feel that, like ginger, I still stand out because of my unique
experiences including the Maine Coast Semester and spending
four months in Senegal. Semester programs like the Outdoor
Academy and Maine Coast Semester greatly influence their
students. I have made a full rotation, and while I am acting
as the a•das•e•he•de in my life, I am also encouraging the
students I live and work with to live intentionally and be
present as the guides in their own lives.

Coming
Full Circle
By Anoop Singh ’03
Photo: Anoop and two of his Duke classmates in Punjab.
Behind them is the Golden Temple, the most important
religious building for Sikhs.
As
is true with most, I absolutely love visiting my
grandparents’ house and gorging myself on
my grandmother’s amazing cooking. The only
difference with my visits as a child was that they occurred about
once every two years as my grandparents live on the other side of
the world, in India. Those trips to India in the ’90s were a complete
culture shock as the country severely lacked many resources and
amenities that I have taken for granted in the US.
Despite the number of times I’ve been to India, today I am still
in shock, but for different reasons. Sporting corporate logos
recognizable to anyone from the US, glass and steel structures have
come to dominate a landscape where there used to be nothing but
farmland. Where there were two-lane roads that saw only a few
brands of Indian-made cars, now stretch roads 12 lanes wide and
two-story highways that see makes of automobiles from all over
the world. One of the biggest trends today is the sudden onset of
never before seen western-style convenience stores.
Much of this change can be attributed to the flattening of the
world that Friedman discusses. The instant connectivity and the
ready and rapid movement of goods, services, ideas, capital, and
people have created this opportunity for developing countries
to leverage their cheaper manpower to provide the developed
world with any and all products needed.
Furthermore, the world has become much more than just flattened;
the world is becoming a community. In a flat world, events in
one part are instantly heard about by others, and resources are
allocated in accordance with the nature of that event. In the
community that is now forming, events and people in one part
have a meaningful impact on those of other parts, and there is real
discussion and interaction taking place because people are aware
of the impacts that they have.
We see this impact in the debate over outsourcing/offshoring:
before, it was merely referred to derisively but now the topic has
become an important issue in the 2008 US presidential election.
Outsourcing has taken a nasty connotation in the US and rightly
so as losing one’s livelihood is a terrible situation. However,
after having spent last summer interning in New Delhi and now
working for the same company, it is hard to refute the positive
impacts this phenomenon has had. The office in New Delhi has
seen an almost one-third increase in staff just in the few months
between my internship and full-time employment, as the increase
in wealth in the country has increased demand for the food
products that the company manufacturers. As hard as it is to
deny the pain that US families suffer from a loss of employment,
it is just as hard to deny the newfound joy of the Indian families
who can now afford to send their children to a decent school and
provide them with a positive outlook on life that previously was
only dreamt of.
Though I do not know the solution or how to “fix” this in order
to make everyone happy, I do feel that the way to think about
this new world is the same way we currently see our churches/
temples, neighborhoods, and schools such as GDS. The world is
becoming less and less like that which is portrayed on maps, with
hard-set boundaries, and more and more like our institutions
such as GDS. The world is becoming a community where
individuals can see how their actions and interactions really do
impact individuals elsewhere.
Coming full circle, outsourcing is causing a previously unseen
effect in India as well. There are numerous instances where the
outsourcing companies are opening up call centers in Vietnam
and other countries because the outsourcing boom has caused a
massive increase in wages here in India. Ironically, the Indian
outsourcing heavy-weights have even opened up call centers
back in the United States.
Outsourcing has given my life an interesting twist as well. Age
having unfairly rendered her joints much less active than before,
my grandmother has outsourced her astonishing culinary abilities
and hired a cook, just when I’m finally able to live every kid’s
dream and spend weekends at my grandparents’ house.
Anoop is a 2007 graduate of Duke University. Following graduation, he
moved to India where he now works.

This committee will be the liaison to GDS juniors
as students who just graduated and are enjoying
their first year at college. This group will attend
college nights at GDS and be available to work
oversee the college mentor program and make
the college mentor assignments each August.
This is a perfect committee for out-of-town
alumni. Match up to a 2007 GDS graduate who
attends your college alma mater.
Young Alumni
This committee will be in charge of gatherings for
younger alumni around the country. Interested
in young alumni gatherings in your area? This is
a great committee for you!
Booster Club
Community/Social Activities
This committee will be the liaison to the GDS Booster
Club and will help with campus-wide athletic
events such as GameDay Grill, Homecoming, Coach
Johnson’s 700th win celebration, the Little Four,
receptions at away games, and more!
This committee will help brainstorm and plan
alumni events that bring alumni back to the
campus or together in other cities. This group is
currently working with the booster committee on
Homecoming in December. Another task includes
starting an Alumni Speaker Series that will bring a
notable alumnus(a) back to campus to speak.
Annual Fund
This committee is in charge of all aspects of the
Alumni Annual Fund...writing and mailing letters,
making follow-up phone calls, and planning events
for the Annual Fund. This committee works closely
with Terri Obermeyer in the GDS Advancement
Office and Alumni Director Kathy Davis. If you live
out of town, volunteer to call some of your fellow
classmates. Challenge them to be the class that raises
the most money for the Annual Fund.
Reunion Weekend
Reunion Weekend includes multiple events over
three days. This committee needs a few individuals
to oversee all the events as permanent committee
members, working closely with the Alumni Office. Events include a Friday night party, a Saturday
morning fun run, a Saturday afternoon cookout
and Saturday night class parties. If you will be in
the area for this year’s Reunion Weekend (April 2526), volunteer your time to the committee. Advance
work can be done via e-mail and phone.
Faculty Appreciation
This committee is in charge of letting the faculty
know how much they are appreciated and letting
them know what the Alumni Association is working
on. Faculty treats will be organized and handed out
at the beginning of each semester and at the final
staff meeting in May.
Database Update
This committee is two-fold. One task is to update
alumni information and profiles. We want to stay
in touch with all alumni and correct information
is a necessity. You can always help with this by
sending us your updated info.
Bylaws
This committee will document and organize current
board practices and update the bylaws to reflect the
current board goals.
Alumni SERVICE PROJECT
This committee will develop one or more alumni
service projects that will include participation of all
alumni on and off campus. We have many ideas for
a first project...this committee will vote on one and
get started very soon. Why not plan a service project
in your area?

What Comes

In
the summer of 2004, I was living in Cochabamba,
Bolivia, a sprawling city perched at 8,500 feet
above sea level in a high Andean valley of South
America. I was two years into a job with a US consulting
firm implementing an agriculture-marketing project for the
US government. We were working with small-scale farmers
needing assistance to access markets for their crops, which
ranged from oregano and onions to coffee and tea.
Phase one of our project was slated to end the following year,
and I had the option of staying to work on phase two or to move
on to something new. On the one hand, I remember thinking
that I loved my job, but on the other hand I wondered… what
should come next? I decided that when my third year in Bolivia
concluded that I would be ready for a change.
Graduate school was one option, but I was unsure about
which degree to pursue. As a student at GDS, I was interested
in environmental issues and participated in activities, such
as recycling initiatives on campus. After finishing at UNC, I
fulfilled a goal I had made for myself in the 7th grade at GDS,
where in Sybil Davis’ class I learned about the Peace Corps and
decided I wanted to be a volunteer too. I headed to Honduras
where I worked building water systems in small villages. That
experience showed me firsthand that the inconvenience of
water rationing in places like Greensboro paled in comparison
to the reality that Hondurans faced in terms of access to clean
water. For the first time, I saw the direct connection between
deforestation and the disappearance of water supplies. The
dependence on firewood for cooking, slash and burn tactics
used for clearing land for cultivation and the demands of the
timber industry all were contributing to the destruction of
watersheds, contamination of surface water supplies, and in
many cases, viable water springs were simply drying up.
Later, in Cochabamba, yet another facet of resource scarcity
revealed how control of natural resources can actually cause
conflict. The city had in 1999 grabbed global media attention
when protests against the privatization of the city water
supply concluded with the violent and deadly ouster of an
international consortium led by the US firm Bechtel. Bechtel’s
group had won the concession to run Cochabamba’s water

system and had instituted sharp rate increases even before
people could see any improvements to the water system. The
result was a major outcry that ended in the consortium being
expelled from the country and the water system’s management
returning to the city.
The connection between environmental concerns and other
forms of social injustice with the potential for increased
incidents of conflict seemed very real to me, and I decided that
it was worth dedicating time to understanding the causes. So, I
left my job in Bolivia and headed back to school. I was thrilled
to find two great opportunities to peak my interests. After
completing a 12-month Master’s Degree in environmental
science and policy in the US, I almost immediately boarded
a plane to Brisbane, Australia where I am currently in my
last month of studies to complete a degree in International
Relations and Peace and Conflict Studies. This second
opportunity was made possible through the generosity of the
Rotary Foundation, which supports peace initiatives such as
the Rotary World Peace Scholarship.
While here in Brisbane, I have explored a wide range of
issues within the contexts of international development,
globalization, peace-building and conflict resolution, and I can
say with greater certainty that we need to do better as a global
community. Not only are we testing the carrying capacity
of the Earth with unsustainable consumption patterns and
population growth, but we are also creating severe inequalities
between rich and poor – a phenomenon that does nothing to
advance our desires for greater global security.
As for me, I will soon return to the working world, and it’s
time to think again about what comes next. I feel incredibly
privileged to have had the luxury of taking over two years to
pursue these studies, and whatever my new pursuit may be,
I feel ready.

To now find myself a part of the Operation

what a strong impact these opportunities

Annual Report of Donors
2006-2007
Greensboro Day School
Annual Report of Donors
2006-2007
Greensboro Day School gratefully acknowledges the donors who demonstrated their commitment to the
school’s mission and programs last year. Through gifts totaling $2,060,721 between July 1, 2006 and
June 30, 2007, donors supported current operations and capital projects and grew the endowment. This
annual giving report recognizes the generous families, alumni, faculty and staff, friends, and organizations
that helped make it possible for our students to have an excellent educational experience. Thank You.
Under the strong leadership of Liz and Glenn Waters, the Annual Fund First campaign raised over
$775,000 in support of faculty salaries, financial assistance, academic programs and day-to-day
operations. These funds represent the most successful Annual Fund campaign in Greensboro Day
School’s history, reaching a record total and exceeding the goal by 10%.
The GDS Alumni Association “came of age” this year, contributing over $100,000 to the Annual Fund
First campaign. In addition, alumnae Mary Copeland ’79 and Jane Gorrell ’79 led a team of alumni
volunteers who launched the Robert D. Satterfield Endowment for Alumni Children, an on-going effort
to raise dollars for need-based financial aid.
We also extend our appreciation to the leadership and volunteers of the Parents’ Association, led by
Allison Morrisette. Their major fundraiser, Savor the Day, chaired by Melanie Ketner and Kimberly
Strong, raised $90,000 towards the completion of the Parents’ Association Media Center as well as
other projects.
The following pages detail the numerous individuals, corporations and foundations who have supported
Greensboro Day School with restricted and unrestricted gifts. Every effort has been made to ensure
the accuracy of this report. However, as with any work of this nature, inadvertent errors may occur. If
we have erred on, or omitted, information, we apologize and ask that you contact the Greensboro Day
School Office of Advancement at (336) 288-8590 or email [email protected].

Endowment Donors
Gifts to endowment assure the future of the Day School. Each dollar given is retained forever and its value becomes
multiplied many times over through its earnings. Gifts to endowment may be made in many forms – through cash gifts,
bequests, trusts, annuities and other gift vehicles. A total of $632,699 was given to permanent endowment funds, the income
from which supports student programs, financial aid, faculty professional development, facilities maintenance, the library
and more. Greensboro Day School’s endowment funds totaled $7,873,085 as of June 30, 2007.
Further information can be found on the Gift Planning pages of the GDS Web site or you are invited to call the Office of Advancement
at 336-288-8590 for further information.
