On Saturday the 16th of July, Junior State Music Camp began but would end in five
days on Thursday the 21st of July. Every single student was eager to experience
another year or their first year of Junior State Music Camp. They all embraced
themselves for an adventure of a musical week which was about to begin.
Once each student was registered, they took their luggage to their rooms. Fervent
to unearth who would be in the same cabins as they were each student swiftly
typed in the code to their rooms and opened the door. Everyone introduced
themselves as they were made new friends.
After all the parents had left the students were organised into groups. All the tutors
as well as the director and organiser introduced themselves and told the students
about what they would be doing in camp. When the camp organiser explained all
the rules, all the students got ready for their Ensemble 1 groups.
Everyday there would be three sessions of ensemble 1 groups. There would be one session of ensemble 1 rehearsal after
breakfast, another after morning tea and one before dinner. Camp item rehearsals occurred twice a day. During camp item
rehearsals, students who auditioned successfully for the orchestra rehearsed the orchestral music and the Vocal Ensemble along
with the rest of the students practised the singing part. The two songs for camp item were Cutty Sark by Australian composer
Stephen Leek and Tread Softly by the camp item director Sally Whitwell. She chose these songs because they were for children’s
voices.
At each mealtime there would always be a group called the ‘Duty Group’ cleaning up the mess left behind by the students.
Breakfast was always the same but lunch and dinner always changed each day. There was always a mouth-watering dessert after
every dinner meal.
On Monday and Tuesday there was special recreation. All the students would either do Giant Swing 1, Giant Swing 2, Archery 1,
Archery 2, Vertical Cluster, Abseiling, Mission Impossible, Survivor 1, Survivor 2, Survivor 3, or Survivor 4.
For evening recreation all the students would play an entertaining game. On Monday students who had a letter ‘A’ for their
Ensemble 2 rehearsed with their ensemble instead of doing recreation which was a trivia game. Everything was the same on
Tuesday but swapped around.
Four members of the South Western Sydney Regional Choir who auditioned successfully into State Music Camp were Tam
Nguyen, Padstow Park P.S. Anoushka Sami, Greenway Park P.S. Jessica Suann, East Hills Girls’ Technology H.S. and Nicole
Sutton, Liverpool Girls’ H.S. They were all in the Vocal Ensemble. The tutors for the Vocal Ensemble were Laura, Atalya, Clare
and Sally (who was the conductor). Mrs Taylor attended the Vocal Ensemble at Camp on Tuesday and Wednesday as well as the
Thursday Evening Concert.
Not including the first day, there would always be a concert each evening. On Wednesday there was the Ensemble 2 concert and
on Thursday there was Ensemble 1 Concert which parents attended.
Students also had repertoire in their Ensemble 2 which was a second activity they wanted to do besides their main one which was
Ensemble 1. For ensemble 2 Tam was in the Woodwind Ensemble B for recorder and performed the Flower Duet from ‘Lakme’,
Jessica was in the Percussion Ensemble B and performed some percussion music created by members in the group, Nicole was in
the Composition Ensemble B which performed some of their own composition and Anoushka was in Music Theatre A and
performed a dance.
For the students who played instruments, they had to audition to see if they were successful in getting into the Lithgow Wind
Ensemble, the Granger Wind Ensemble or the Camp Orchestra. There was also a Saxophone Ensemble and a Rock Band.
In the Thursday Evening Concert, the Vocal Ensemble sang four songs; Alleluia by Montpellier Codex which was arranged by
Sally Whitwell, Wild Mountain Thyme which is Traditional arranged by Ian Jefferson, Far Rah Fields by Sally Whitwell and
Farewell and Goodnight by an anonymous composer and James Iha arranged by Sally Whitwell which was conducted by Sally
Whitwell. The Final of the was performed by the Vocal Ensemble, other singers and the Orchestra.
Once the whole concert had ended, everyone including the audience helped to pack up the auditorium to make it look like how it
was before the camp started. After everyone had done completed that task, each student left with their parents to collect their
bags and leave camp feeling exhausted and desiring to go home or wanting to come again in 2012.

Pixie Photos Evaluation
Mr Kolodziej, the P&C Executive and I held a meeting with
a representative of Pixie Photos last week in order to put
forward your dissatisfaction with many of the photos this
year. He acknowledged that they had a lot of problems
with the colour printing for the book this year and the
company have made changes for next year. Any parent
who is not happy with their child’s individual photo is
encouraged to contact the company and arrange to have
the photo retaken. We will be discussing the issue of
School Photos at the next P & C meeting and all
interested parents are encouraged to attend.

Education Week
Below is a copy of the Education Week Open Day
timetable for next Thursday, 4th August which you should
also have received in the form of an invitation earlier this
week. Parents, grandparents and family members are very
welcome to join students and staff for all or part of this
day in celebration of Public education. We have planned
the day to focus on our main target areas including
Fitness and Music. We hope you will take the time to visit
the new Library and Music room as well as visiting classes
to look at the work being done in Literacy and Numeracy.
The day will be held no matter what the weather as
Fitness classes will be held in the Hall in the event of rain. CANTEEN NEWS

Athletics Carnival
Weather permitting we will hold our K - 6 Athletics
Carnival on Wednesday next week at Amour Park in
Revesby. This may depend on the state of the Park after
all the rain and whether the council has had a chance to
mark the track. We apologise for the uncertainty for
working parents but we are in the hands of the council
when using their grounds. We will try to keep you
informed as we have updated information.

CADBURY FUNDRAISER
One box of Cadbury Chocolates went home to families
this week. There are 48 chocolates in each box selling at
$1.00 each. Please consider selling to family, friends,
neighbours or in the workplace.
If selling door-to-door, children should be accompanied
by an adult or sell only to known friends and neighbours.
Any unsold chocolates and money collected is due to the
office by Tuesday, 30th August. Thank you.
MY WOOLIES
PPPS has registered for the Woolworths Earn & Learn
Program. Collect Earn & Learn points for our school when
you shop in store at Woolworths, Woolworths on-line or at
Caltex/Woolworths Service Stations. Earn one point for
every $10 spent in a single transaction. Cut off the
bottom section of the docket and take it to the office
and place it in the green collection box.
NEW PLAYGROUP AT OUR SCHOOL!
Next Tuesday, 2nd August there will be a
Registration/Open Day for any family who would
like to have a look at the new playgroup within the school.
Parents with their children aged 0 - 5 are welcome to
come. Places are limited so you can register on the day.
Registration is $10 per family. (See back page for more
information).
