Rosecliff
Revealed
A new-for-2011 audio tour brings Rosecliff’s history and
romance to life with never-before-told stories and first
person remembrances of the colorful families of Rosecliff.
From Tessie Oelrichs, who built this fantasy in terra cotta,
to the Monroes of New Orleans, the last family to call
Rosecliff home, you’ll discover the very human story
of Newport’s great party house.
Don’t miss this exciting new visitor experience at Rosecliff.

AND THE BRIDE WORE…
WEDDING DRESSES FROM THE
COLLECTION 1895-1965
Many brides have walked down
the heart-shaped staircase at Rosecliff
over the years, so it’s fitting that this year’s
fashion exhibit features 70 years of wedding dresses,
from 1895 to 1965.

Come Alive!
T HE B REAKERS
1895 National Historic Landmark
The Gilded Age houses of the Newport Mansions are
landmarks of a vibrant era. To capture the flavor of the
era, The Preservation Society of Newport County has
included the voices, memories and experiences of generations
of people who lived and worked in these houses. We share them
with you in a series of audio tours of The Breakers, The Elms,
Marble House, and, new this year, Rosecliff.
“We explore several aspects of
Gilded Age history and culture in
these tours,” says John Tschirch,
Director of Museum Affairs.
“After visiting
the four Gilded
Age houses,
one leaves with
a real sense
of the monumental building,
the social whirl
of the rich,
powerful and fashionable, the rise of
industry and technological invention,
the stories of servants, and the
changing role of women that
defined the age.”
The Breakers
Family Tour
“We were amazed at how much the girls enjoyed
their audio family tour. Our oldest daughter
(age 6) said ‘Mom! The house was talking to me!’
It brought the experience to life for them, and made
them want to learn about history. It was such a
pleasure to see the girls enjoying it.”
Alabama visitor
The Breakers Family Tour brings the house, its furnishings,
and even its sculpture to life as never before. From the
over-stuffed Butler to the irascible French Chef, youngsters
(and parents) will see the house through a new set of eyes.
Wait until you meet the special host who will tell you the
stories of life in this great Newport estate.
Sights & Sounds
of The Breakers
A Compelling Look at a Legendary Mansion
• Listen to reminiscences of life in The Breakers
• Hear from servants and their children
• Tour never-before-seen rooms
You’ll hear first-person accounts from people
who lived and worked in this great house:
“Every footman had to be over six feet tall,
to look impressive in his uniform.”
Even if you’ve been to The Breakers before,
we promise you’ll enjoy a totally different
and enlightening experience.
The 70-room summer estate of New York Central
Railroad President Cornelius Vanderbilt II includes a
two and a half story high Great Hall and a Morning
Room adorned with platinum leaf wall panels. Its
interiors feature rare marble, alabaster, and gilded
woods throughout.

Newport was renowned in the
18th century as the “Eden of America.”
The properties of the Preservation
Society contain gardens and trees
that together comprise one of the most
important arboretums in New England. Our 88 acres of
historic landscapes represent an outstanding chapter in the
nation’s history of garden design, horticulture and early tree
and plant propagation.
GREEN ANIMALS TOPIARY GARDEN c. 1860
One of America’s great Victorian houses, Chateau-sur-Mer
was home to three generations of the Wetmore family.
It features hand-carved Italian
woodwork, Chinese porcelains,
Egyptian and Japanese Revival
stenciled wallpapers, and rare
trees from as far away as Mongolia.
Recently-restored original bronzes
of ladies in Japanese dress holding
ornate candelabra have been returned
to the central staircase.
C HEPSTOW 1861
This charming Italianate-style
cottage was designed by
Newport architect George
Champlin Mason. It reflects
the mid-20th century style of
its last owner, Alletta Morris
McBean, and includes original
family furnishings.

A lion, a camel, a bear, oh my! These and dozens of other

Step back into Newport’s romantic era at Kingscote and the
Isaac Bell House, two American architectural masterpieces.
Together, these two picturesque cottages illustrate Newport’s
evolution as a premier place for great design, fine living, and
the creation of a distinctly American style of architecture.
Architects McKim, Mead and White created one of the nation’s
greatest dining rooms at Kingscote, with Tiffany glass, a unique
cork ceiling, and rare furniture and silver collections. They went
on to build the Shingle-Style Isaac Bell House, featuring Arts and
Crafts interiors, Japanese-inspired columns, and an open floor plan.
Admission to Kingscote and Isaac Bell House counts as a single

For 65 years, The Preservation Society of Newport
County has brought America’s heritage to life. In 1945,
a group of visionaries founded the Preservation
Society to save Newport’s internationally-significant
architecture from the wrecking ball and neglect.
That work continues today.
The Preservation Society of Newport County is a
private, non-profit, member-supported organization,
accredited by the American Association of Museums.
More than 30 million visitors have passed through the
magnificent gates and gardens of our properties, coming
from every U.S. state and from around the world.
Your memberships, visits to the houses, purchases in
our Newport Mansions Stores and donations are the
lifeblood of the Preservation Society. By visiting us, you
are making your own investment in preserving our
heritage. Your support makes it possible for us to
maintain these properties—seven of them recognized
as National Historic Landmarks—so that they can
continue to be enjoyed by many generations to come.
The preservation of these historic structures is a
never-ending labor of love for all of the Preservation
Society’s employees, because we believe in the vision
of our founders. We thank you for making it
possible for us to fulfill that vision.
THE PRESERVATION SOCIETY PARTNERS WITH
