KOLHAPUR...A LEGACY
The permanency of the cultural imprint of Kolhapur remains undeniable; as is its reputation as
major cultural center where many of Indian cinema’s first forays were made. The city, built by
Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, was the home of the first major Indian film studio - the legendary
PRABHAT. It is also where the first Indian colour film was made. Kolhapur, a city 450 km south
of Mumbai, also made a valuable contribution to the film society movement which sprouted in
the late 1940s across the nation - the Baburao Painter Film Society; an institution that has for
60 years, persisted with its efforts to cultivate a culture of cinema in the city. The city is also
popularly thought of as the venue for the conceptualisation of the first Indian feature film, Raja
Harishchandra. Kolhapur has proven time and again, that while it may not be an economic or
scalar equal to the metros and the large towns; when it comes to cultural influence, it has one of
the richest, and the most indelible legacies in the nation. Kolhapur’s Hall of Fame is studded with
gems like V Shantaram, Bhalji Pendharkar, Baburao Painter and Academy Award-winner Bhanu
Athaiya.
