For the past four years, the cinema at 506 Bloor Street W has been successfully
administered, operated and programmed by Hot Docs, in partnership with
the generous Blue Ice Group. Once threatened with redevelopment, this creative
partnership saved the much-loved neighbourhood venue.
Now under Hot Docs’ ownership thanks to a remarkable $4-million gift from
the Rogers Foundation, announced at an event on June 22, the Hot Docs
Ted Rogers Cinema will continue the tradition of engaging and thought-provoking
programming excellence. Hot Docs’ purchase of the building represents a longterm commitment to its thriving future as a cinema.
Hot Docs is fortunate to have had four years to build the skills and expertise to
confidently enter this new stage, and we do so with great passion, ambition and

Charles Devigne, who has made the
bold decision to boost his struggling
restaurant’s business by putting up the
iconic zebra wallpaper made famous
by the recently-closed New York dining
institution Gino’s. (Film buffs may
recognize the wallpaper from Wes
Anderson’s The Royal Tenenbaums!) But
his choice sparks controversy when Gino’s
previous owners, staff and loyal regulars,
still hurting over the eatery’s closing,
catch wind of his intentions. Hear directly
from restaurateurs, owners and long-time
regulars of Gino’s as they describe what
made the place an institution-alongside
the reasons for its closure and the gap it
left behind. Heartfelt and humorous, The
Missing Ingredient searches for the
indefinable magic that makes a regular

Tickled needs to be seen to be believed. It
all started when journalist David Farrier
stumbles across a strange video online
for a sport called “competitive endurance
tickling.” When he tried to contact the
person responsible for posting the video
to do a short news story, the response
comes laced with such vitriol that he’s
compelled to discover what would
spark such a reaction. What he finds is
bigger and more bizarre than anything
you’re likely to imagine. Launched
into an increasingly complicated series
of stories and situations, Farrier crafts
a compelling investigation into a truly
peculiar phenomenon that becomes both
disturbing and dangerous, guiding the
audience deftly through an experience
they won’t be able to forget.

Korean government, 24-hour handlers
and rigorous censorship, it would
seem impossible to make a documentary
that penetrates the most secretive
country in the world—but filmmaker Vitaly
Mansky found a way in this Hot Docs
hit. Welcome to the year’s most unlikely
collaboration-turned-exposé. Having
received permission to document one
year in the life of a “regular girl,” Mansky
found the filmmaking process in North
Korea to be laboriously staged. With
a small but crucial change, he kept his
cameras rolling between official takes,
so audiences at home could see the
regime’s meticulous and total control hard
at work. From setting up a casual bedtime
scene to demanding countless takes of a
factory forewoman congratulating workers
until she has appropriate zeal, we are
treated to a subtle and penetrating
look at one of the world’s most finessed
propaganda machines.

mayor of New York. But it’s not long before
another scandal erupts. As his campaign
flounders, voters turn against him
and staffers lose faith, the disappointment
of his wife (and powerhouse political
operative in her own right) Huma Abedin is
palpable, her disciplined life shredded by
her husband’s reckless actions. One of the
most intriguing political documentaries
of the last decade, Weiner is equal parts

Take an atmospheric and immersive musical journey through the swamps of the Louisiana
Bayou, the juke joints of the Mississippi Delta and the moonshine-soaked barbeques of North
Mississippi Hill Country. A favourite from this year’s Hot Docs, I Am The Blues takes audiences
into the world of the African American blues legends, many in their 80s, still making music and
sharing stories in the Deep South. From sunny front porches to spirited church halls, the last
of the ‘blues devils’ including Bobby Rush, Barbara Lynn, Henry Gray, Jimmy “Duck” Holmes,
Lazy Lester and Little Freddie King share their songs and a spellbinding oral history. Capturing
the distinctive landscapes and romantic spirit of the South with an expert lens, director Daniel
Cross follows the Mississippi River past Graceland, past Muscle Shoals, and into the beating
heart of the blues.
A cutthroat world of auction houses, hedge fund managers, FBI sleuths and organized crime
opens up when millions of dollars worth of wine are discovered to have been made in a California
basement with false labels slapped on. It was rumoured that Rudy Kurniawan was a wine savant:
in 2006, he made $35 million in two wine auctions from the sale of his bottles. But in 2008, a French
producer realized that wine from his family’s domain was being sold from a year they hadn’t
produced it. Uncorking the con’s full story, Hot Docs hit Sour Grapes shows how the super-rich were
buying fine wine as if they were mortgage-backed securities before the 2008 financial crisis, and
how the demands of excess and greed can make anything “real.”

For centuries, the Bunong Indigenous people of Eastern Cambodia
lived with elephants, depending on them for every aspect of life.

Join us for a rollicking journey through the 40-year history of Canadian rock legends and
Willowdale natives Rush. Despite being one of rock’s most influential bands—ranking
third for most consecutive gold or platinum albums after The Beatles and The Rolling
Stones—Rush has been largely ignored by critics. Featuring never-before-seen archival
footage and new interviews, Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage explores the phenomenon
of what could be the world’s biggest cult band.
In this soulful portrait of Sarnia, the city’s long-suffering petrochemical workers reveal the
importance, and meaning, of community. Amidst the bright sprawl of petrochemical plants,
swollen hospital wards and crowded bars, the residents of Sarnia battle chronic illness and the
decline of good jobs. Tattooed men serving fries, basement musicians, volunteer firemen and
an optimistic mayor—the lives of a diverse medley of characters intersect to reveal the dramas
and contradictions of an industrial town.

As the historic cinema enters a new era under the ownership of Hot Docs, we look fondly back
on the venue’s incredible history. Since opening its doors in 1913 as the Madison Theatre,
