What is Quality Counts?
Quality Counts is an online program designed to teach youth to have
high standards in caring for their livestock. The program focuses on
displaying good character while working with livestock. Once the
program is completed by passing either the junior level or senior level
exam, the participant will receive a Quality Counts verification
number. This number is required for ALL stock show entries (county
AND major stock shows).
Where do I go to take the Quality Counts Exam?
The link is agrilife.org/qualitycounts/. Once you are on the website, click
on the word “Verification” and click on “Take the test and become
Verified”. If you are only showing through 4-H, then click on “4-H”
icon. If you are showing through 4-H and FFA, then click on the “4-H
and FFA” icon. Enter your basic information, and make sure that you
enter that you are showing in Gillespie County!!! If you do not enter
Gillespie County, we will not be able to retrieve your Quality Counts
Number! Then, begin answering each question on the test and submit
your exam when finished. We will be able to see if you have completed
the exam, and it will not be necessary for you to bring in a copy of your
quality counts certificate.
My 4-H member has taken the quality counts exam previously, does
he/she have to take it again?
It depends on the exhibitor’s age. Exhibitors must take and pass the
junior level exam once until age 14 (as of August 31, 2015). Once an
exhibitor turns 14, then he/she must take and pass the senior level exam
one time. It is not necessary to take the exam again each year unless
the member is moving from the junior level to the senior level.

GILLESPIE COUNTY 4-H MEMBER, JULIE KREBS,
SELECTED AS TWA YOUTH VOLUNTEER OF THE
YEAR!!!
Here is a picture of Julie, taken by Koy Coffer, receiving the award.
According to the Texas Wildlife Association, “The TWA youth
volunteer of the year award is given to a youth who excels as a
volunteer. Julie has assisted in many different aspects of TWA
such as Texas Youth Hunting Program, Texas Brigades, Texas Big
Game Awards, etc. She is great with the younger kids and even as
a hunt participant she was willing to help other, newer hunters
(and parents) in any way she could. She has attended and helped
at Brigades Camps and assisted at Big Game Awards banquets. As
an example at a youth hunt this year Julie was working all
weekend. Everything from cleaning windows, organizing hunters
and parents, being available to answer questions and cleaning up,
if there was something to be done Julie was there. She also
promoted TWA, TYHP and Brigades on Saturday night in a short
but very well done presentation. It was obvious all weekend that
while her Dad was the huntmaster leading the hunt, Julie had
been a very big part of making the weekend successful through
planning ahead of time and all that she contributed at the hunt.
Julie is always respectful, willing to help and serves other while
keeping a positive attitude.
Congratulations Julie !!!!!

GILLESPIE COUNTY 4-H CANNED FOOD DRIVE
CONTINUES FOR THIS YEAR!
We are asking that each 4-H member bring one non-perishable
food item to every 4-H event (club meeting, BBQ, Validation,
Food Workshops, showmanship clinics, etc…) this 4-H year. Once
items are collected, club secretaries should keep track of how
many items have been collected from each club, and this should
be reported on monthly club reports or minutes. After each
meeting, food items can be brought to the Extension Office for
delivery to the Fredericksburg Food Pantry, or clubs may donate
items to their local food ministries.

SCIENCE SLEUTH CHALLENGE LAUCHES WITH
TEXAS 4-H
The Science Mill is teaming up with Texas 4-H to launch a new
Science Sleuth Challenge. Anyone who has visited the Science
Mill can participate. After your visit to the Science Mill, log on to
the 4-H portal and complete a series of science challenges to rack
up points and earn virtual badges.
This awesome experience continues your investigation
of science after you have left the Science Mill. Each challenge is a
different topic – computer technology, physics, water
conservation, and more – where you use the scientific method to
learn, research, and experiment.
Complete a challenge, post your research, explain your
experiments and then show your results on the interactive science
board. In return, you’ll get feedback on your research from
experts on the topics. Who knows, it could be the topic for your
next science fair, 4-H, or school project!
Access the 4-H Science Sleuth Challenge through the
Science Mill’s link http://www.sciencemill.org/siteusers/ and look
for the 4-H logo.
