Council Corner
Message From the Board-
Message from the General Manager
Ron Botello, Board Chairman
Bryant Early
Spring is around the corner and we seem
to be getting summer weather already.
We had some 80 degree days in February
and here’s hoping for more warm days in
March. Many members enjoyed our
Valentine ’s Day event last month, with excellent menu items and
beautiful weather. Our Boots & Bling event was also very well
attended with quite a few “drug store cowboys” enjoying the
evening activities and excellent food. Lastly, the Super Bowl 50
party filled the Tavern on the Green and overflowed into other
rooms in the main ballroom. Three great events we enjoyed by
all. Rumor has it some members never left our Friday event and
stayed until the Sunday Super Bowl party. (Not confirmed).
Spring break will be a big part of the month of March with our
college students coming home to see family and friends or getting
together for a trip to the coast or other fun gathering places.
Our tennis and golf programs will be picking up steam, including
programs for our juniors. So get your games in shape by
scheduling lessons with our tennis and golf pros to get your
games ready for the summer. Be sure to look over the incentives
for bringing in new members. Our new membership program will
give you the ability to enjoy a trip to Las Vegas courtesy of
CBIGG, our new owners. Bring your family, bring your friends
and enjoy the many activities The Club @ Sonterra has to offer,
I think you’ll be glad you did.
Ron Botello, Board Chairman
I can smell it in the air, Spring is near! Although
our winter has been practically nonexistent,
I’m sure you are as eager as I am for spring to
finally arrive. There’s so much going on
around the club and I hope you all have been
taking advantage of all the activities. As we
round out the first quarter, I’m pleased to say
that Membership has continued to be on the rise as a result of your
referrals to the club. Remember, for every new Member you refer it
moves you ever so closer to our company sponsored trip to Las Vegas
later this year as Sonterra will be taking 8 individuals on this fun filled
trip. Call Julie Golla our Director of Membership for more information.
I would also like to formerly announce that our new website is up and
running. This new site not only is a refreshing look but it is more user
friendly. I encourage you to visit the site soon. We will also be adding
an interactive calendar that will allow you to make reservations
online. This new website will allow us to send out periodic emails
letting you know what’s going on at the club and it will also allow us to
send text messages to various groups within the club.
Finally, with summer not too far away, please be on the lookout for our
Annual Summer Camp brochure outlining all upcoming activities the club
will offer this year. Be sure to sign your little one up for Golf, Tennis,
Sonterra Camp and/or the best swim team in the land.
I look forward to seeing you all around the club very soon!
Until next time,
Bryant Early

March is finally here and spring is on the way. One
thing I wanted to remind everyone is that even
though the day time temps have warmed up we are
still seeing low to mid 50’s at night. Another thing
is day length. Our days are not quite long enough to significantly
produce growth in our warm season Bermuda grass. We have certainly
seen an increase in chlorophyll production, hence the green up, but we
still haven’t started actively growing. This will happen towards the end
of March and then for sure into April. Some things we have completed
this past month is as follows. We applied our first pre-emergent
herbicide and post emergent herbicide to start to kill all winter weeds
that have popped up as well as preventing those that will try to emerge in
the spring/summer. We also raised the water level on 18N/11N pond.
This is to bring our water level above some of the unsightly root
structures of the Bald Cypress trees. We have also sodded these areas
and will keep roped off in order to provide better turf in this area. The
goal is to prevent some errant shots from rolling down into the water.
We also have brought back into play an old teeing ground on 3N. This
area gives a great line of sight to the green. Once this sod has
established we will start allowing tee shots to be played from this area.
Going forward, I will begin communicated to everyone via a direct
email. In these emails I will be able to describe more in depth of what
projects we are working and also provide updates on course conditions.
I look forward to seeing everyone out on the golf course this spring.
As I write this our terrible winter has
turned to sunshine, blue skies and 70 degrees. One
by product of our amazingly mild year has been
more cart traffic than normal, and with less rain
than expected we have some areas that are dry
mostly in access and egress areas. We would ask that everyone please be
aware of where they are taking carts, RETURN TO THE PATHS around
all greens and tees. Our golf courses are in prime position to be great in
2016 so we ask that everyone please repair ball marks and fill divots with
sand.
The SWGA,MGA and GGG's are off to a roaring start!. If you are new to
Sonterra or simply looking to join one of these groups please call the golf
shop so that we may get you involved. Our junior program is also in full
swing with clinics and team play, again call the golf shop for
information. Watch also for POWERBALL, The Sequel. I have had a couple
of members want to get involved in helping this great event to go again.
We will meet shortly and send out emails confirming the rules, times and
start dates. Please call if you would like to help.
As most of you have noticed, we have had a couple of changes in the golf
shop. Amy has dug right in to the merchandise, spoken with numerous
new and different vendors, and started creating her own look. Please stop
by and say hello if you have not, and look for major changes in the
merchandise coming soon. Our lines will be varied by both style and price
with something for everyone.
Another change is in our professional staff. Gaston is moving to
La Cantera effective the end of February. Gaston has worked here for a
number of years and will be missed by both members and staff. We wish
him well and know that we will stay in touch.

Just a reminder – The MGA has adopted a new tournament handicapping system for 2016. For events where individual scores are
posted (there are 5 such events in 2016), a player’s handicap will
be based on his MGA tournament performance. Only events
where an individual score can be posted will count toward a player’s MGA handicap – thus, no shamble, scramble or other event
based on team performance will be used.

Sonterra Cup
The Sonterra Cup is a yearlong event. The top 40 on the MGA Money
List, with money earned for participation and performance,
automatically qualify for the Sonterra Cup tournament. An additional
four spots will be earned in the last three MGA tournaments, keeping
the excitement going to the end. The Sonterra cup is contested in a
Ryder Cup format and will be held this year on November 14th &

Tennis News- Michelle Dodier, Director of Tennis
January and February are now in the rear view
mirror and we are now in the “March Madness”
mode—though I could add “Madness” to every
month. This month is exciting for numerous reasonsbasketball, daylight savings time, spring break,
WTA Tournament, Mabry Tournament, Easter and
one month closer to our annual Member Guest Tournament. The weather was kind to us this winter so
we were spared all the make-up matches we normally have. As we look at March with a full plate of
activities as mentioned –you all still have to play a
full slate of league matches still on schedule. You
don’t see many clubs whose members can handle the
rigorous tempo we maintain here at Sonterra. You all are in great shape
The Sonterra Advisory Board has been hard at work and are the pulse of your
club. They are your voice—if you have an idea, comment or would like to be
on a committee—please contact one of the members. A list of your board
members is posted on the bulletin board. Let’s continue working together to
keep everyone proud of our club.
We will be adding events to our schedule and will send them via email and
bulletin board. Please read those emails – we know you get inundated, but you
don’t want to miss a fun event by skipping a message or reminder.
We appreciate the phone calls we receive to release a reserved court that
couldn’t be used- it really helps us at prime time. With all the leagues at full
capacity, team practices, lessons and member play morning and evening every
open court is precious. Remember to check in before you go to your court so
we can track court availability. No check in could mean no court.

there is no turning back. Just ask the many tennis members who
can’t get enough of this wonderful sport. Mike and staff make
learning this game fun and the clothes are just out of this world.

Guys jump in anytime your schedule permits- just call Laurie.
If your spring schedule has changed and you are now free to
play on Thursday morning—this is the league for you. You
respond weekly to Laurie’s email to secure your spot –so you
are not committed to each week. There are varied levels of play
from 3.0 to 4.0—it’s all about fun.
Spring After School Junior Tennis Program
Josh and his team are now into their third month of the after
school program. He will be implementing the 10 and under
program with the designated color balls that USTA has promoted for that age group. There will be tournaments for the 10 and
under along with interclub match play. The older juniors will
also have designated match play along with tournament play for
their ability level. Brochures are now available in the pro shop.
For more info please call Josh at 491-9888.
Juniors: 3 hours per day
Junior Team Tennis (JTT)
Cost- $110.00 per child—all 3 days Daily rate $40.00 (guest $45.00)
Josh again will be leading his Sonterra juniors into match play
beginning April 3rd. Registration for all juniors ages 8 and older
is now taking place. There will be practices on Friday’s and
Sundays prior to the start of JTT to prepare the juniors for this
very fun four week event. So mom and dad let’s get these kids
signed up and ready to play. For more information please contact Josh at 491-9888
We will focus on only two strokes per day so we can really make a difference when you
leave. We want a lot of correct repetition to develop the muscle memory needed to
improve your strokes.
Grand Slam Member Guest Tournament—April 29-May 1
Registration day is almost here (March 28th at 8am) and if you haven’t marked this date
down, or found a partner, now is the time. This event is the crème de la crème of San
Antonio events. We have players from all over calling to let us know they are available
if a member needs a guest. It not only is a fun filled two and a half day event that
leaves you a happy but tired tennis player– it also gives back to our community by
donating $10,000.00 to Any Baby Can. So line up that guest, mark down that date and
start working out for one heck of a weekend. We will be forwarding more information
throughout the month.

Here’s your chance to occupy one of those Club Champions’ parking spaced and get
your name and picture on the plaque of fame. This is the first of our trifecta of club
championships events. It is a week-long tournament and you must be able to play all
week. Registration begins April 4th.
Racquets, Shoes and Strings Close Out
Come by and check out the racquets, shoes and strings that have
been drastically reduced to make room for our new 2016 models. Do you need a second racquet? You will always need another string job and those shoes break down pretty fast, especially as much as you are playing. Come by and look at our
great close out specials.
Birthday Cards—Did you get one?
If you haven’t gotten a card on your birthday from us then we
must not have your birth date. We want to celebrate your day
so please let us know so we can update our files and celebrate
your day.
