from the
PRESIDENT
Bill Sanders
The Richmond Porsche Meet (RPM) was a smashing success! After a
week of rain, the skies cleared and our club hosted a great event. Tom
Zaffarano, our Zone 2 Representative and several First Settler’s Region
members were also in attendance. Be sure to read about it elsewhere
in this issue and see more photos on our website. I can’t thank Alex
and Gail Smith enough for their tireless work in pulling this event
off, plus the great help of Bob Duntley, Bryce and Gay Jewett. And a
special thank you to Howard and Leeanne Faunce for allowing 75+
Porsche’s to park on their lawn and 200+ people to wander about.
I hope we can continue to hold this event at the Faunce’s in the years
to come. I believe the board will find the funds in our treasury to
purchase or construct a set of low-profile ramps for the bridge crossing
so that Bryce doesn’t have to stand duty at the bridge for half the day.
Without Bryce’s help, the front spoiler from my 928 would be thrashed.
I would like to take this soap box opportunity to thank the many
businesses and others who advertise in the Heat Exchanger and who
provided sponsorship funds for RPM. The club’s major revenue source
over the years has been RPM and these sponsors help us pull this
great event off each year. The Heat Exchanger advertisers allow us to
provide a very nicely published newsletter each month. I ask that you
support these businesses whenever you can, as they greatly support
our club.
As we head into the heat of summer, check out the upcoming events
in the Calendar section. Mark your calendar for Phyllis and Weldon
Scrogham’s Garage Mahal tour on the morning of July 19th, followed
by another excellent Autocross at the Verona government center.
Please RSVP to Phyllis at [email protected] by July 15th so she
can have a good head count for refreshments. Autocross signup is
at www.motorsportsreg.com and greatly helps Erik in the registration
process.
My wife Jill is not a car person. She is however, more than tolerant of
my affliction and has a good time at club events. She likes cars that
start every morning and don’t spend a lot of time in the shop. “BB”,
my 15-year old 928 GTS, is currently in the “dog house” with Jill as the
repair bills and downtime mount. So while at Euroclassics for the RPM
Saturday afternoon tech session, I knew she wouldn’t want to hear a
technical discussion of the PDK transmission. I suggested she go test
drive some cars. The folks at Euroclassics were very helpful and she
really liked the Boxster S she drove. That test drive, in conjunction
with the extended warranty for Certified Pre-Owned cars offered by
PCNA dealers, has her on the lookout for something fun to drive. A
late model Boxster or Boxster S in midnight blue metallic and manual
transmission is perhaps in her future.
Raif Antar, owner of Basil’s Mediterranean Bistro, tells me he is a few
months from unveiling his 935, currently under construction at an
undisclosed location. Stay tuned for the unveiling and other race car
construction news.

R.P.M. Dodges a Bullet
The 13th annual Richmond Porsche
Meet opened on the beautiful estate
of Howard and Leeanne Faunce after
a very rainy preceding Friday. But
all was well, the grounds, beautifully
maintained, drained perfectly and not
a puddle anywhere.
Jewett for ordering our Sunday lunch
and Gail Smith for picking it up. For
Chick, our caterer, always providing
great eats at a reasonable price for
our club. Also, our guest speakers
from PCNA, Michael Swind and Steve
Riley, the tech session at Euroclassics
was one of our best with Chris Stone
and Wayne Hall. All of our sponsors
make this event possible. I hope I
haven’t left anyone out.
R.P.M. is all of about the members
in Shenandoah and our friends who
pull together to give the participants a
great weekend of Porsches, tasty food
and fun activities. My thanks start
with the Faunces – what a beautiful
home to have a car show and lunch!
Thank you Bob Duntley for all the
bookkeeping and registration work,

Johnson for sponsors, Don and Tyler
Charles for a special tour, Bill Sanders
for organizing us and advertising the
event. Our concours judges, Pam,

MEMBER MOMENT
Member, Eric Huggins Interviewed by Ben Briggs
Q What would your dream Porsche be?
A Some day I would like to find a used
GT3. It would have to get a lot cheaper
than they are now, and my two boys
would have to be finished with college,
but my 88 will always be a keeper.
Q What is your all time favorite Porsche?
Me, Laramie and Caleb at Grand
Teton National Park in 2007
Q How old are you, Occupation and
where do you live?
A I am 39 years old. I am a Mechanical
Engineer, and I live in Stuarts Draft, VA.
Q What was your first automobile?
A My first car was a 1981 Chevrolet
Citation. It was bright yellow, and was
one of the ugliest cars around in the mid
80's. But that car got great gas mileage
and got me around.
Q What was your 1st Porsche memory? A I remember seeing my 1st 911 when I
was 4 years old in St. Louis, and I wanted
a Porsche from that moment on. The 1st
time that I ever rode in a Porsche was in
1990 in a friend's 1978 924. It seemed
like a fast car at the time -- especially
compared to a Chevy Citiation.
Q What was your first Porsche and your
Current Porsche?
A They are the same -- I bought a 1988
silver 911 with a burgundy interior 2 and
a half years ago. It had 62,000 miles on
it and now has 75,000. I took the black
rear flare guard off and added Carrera
graphics. It is my goal to add a duck tail
and bring the appearance of this car back
to a 1974 look.
Q Why have you chosen your latest
Porsche?
A I test drove Carreras, 964's, 993's
and 2 996's. I liked the styling and driving
character of the late 80's Carrera cars the
best. Check it Out!
Looking for Shenandoah
Region PCA logo gear?
http://shnpca.webstore.us.com
12
A My favorite Porsche is a 1973 Carrera
RS. The tail, larger flares and Carrera
graphics is what attracted me to Porsches
at a young age.
Q What non-Porsche hobbies do you
enjoy?
A Spending time with my family -- wife
Michelle, and sons Laramie - 15 and
Caleb 11. Growing up in the St. Louis
area made me a Cardinals baseball
fan for life. We enjoy watching them
play on the road. We will see games
in Washington DC and Pittsburgh this
year, and I will watch most of the rest
on Satellite TV. Our family also enjoys
traveling to the historic sites in the area.
Q Favorite Driving song?
A I am currently listening to an Eagles
CD in my 911. It is fitting that the title
is "Hell Freezes Over", because that was
when I thought that I would be able to get
a 911.

Garage Mahal Tour & Autocross
On Sunday, July 19, 2009 between
8:30 and 10:00 a.m. Phyllis and
Weldon Scrogham invite you to make
a “pit stop” at the famous Garage
Mahal in Waynesboro. Drop by for a
continental breakfast and gaze upon
the Scroghams’ beautiful collection
of Porsches and a garage that most
of us can only dream of. See map
for directions to their home at 161
Huntington Place, Waynesboro, VA
22980. Please contact Phyllis to RSVP
by telephone at (540) 256-1596 or
email at [email protected] by July 15.
Afterward, head over to the Augusta
Government Center in Verona for
another one of Rick and Erik’s
challenging autocrosses. Registration
is now open at www.motorsportreg.
com. You will have plenty of time to
travel from the Garage Mahal, sign
in, and prepare your cars for the
event. The drivers’ meeting will be at
11:30 a.m. with the first car off shortly
thereafter.
If speeding around pylons is not your
game, take a leisurely drive over to
Andre Viette’s Daylily and Wine Festival
in Fishersville. This is not a PCAsanctioned event but just an option to
the autocross while you’re in the area.
For more details see
http://www.daylilyandwinefestival.com/.

Anniversary Party
Mark your calendar! Join your hosts
Lou Giusto and Stephanie Sheridan
to celebrate Shenandoah’s 14th
anniversary on Saturday, September
26 at 2:00 p.m. The event will take
place at their home, Hawkstead,
overlooking the North Fork of the
Shenandoah River in Woodstock, VA.
Plan to enjoy their treat to us of brats
and knockwurst, sautéed onions and
sauerkraut, German potato salad,
Caesar salad, sautéed fresh apples
with crème fraiche, and assorted
snacks and beverages. (By the way,
Lou is a professional chef.) If you
prefer stronger drink, you may BYOB.
Of course, we will round out the
celebration with a birthday cake.
For maps, sites to see and places to
stay in the local area, and updated
information, please check the
Shenandoah Region PCA web site at

will be forthcoming in future issues of
the “Heat Exchanger.”
