THINGS TO DO
LOCAL
Flavor
One of the quickest, easiest and most enjoyable
ways to get to know a city is find out where
and what the locals love to eat. Here’s a sampling:
YACHT CLUB ON COLLEGE
Food trucks have become all the rage among
foodies. In Fayetteville, the Yacht Club on
College, “a gathering of mobile vendors,” doesn’t
disappoint. The collective includes Natural State
Sandwiches, which specializes in Pittsburgh style
sandwiches; Zuppa Zuppa Soup Kitchen; Kona
Coast taco stand and Reno’s Smoked Meats.
SLIM CHICKENS
With four locations around Fayetteville, this
Southern franchise truly captures the soulful
nature of the region, while taking the chicken
tender to a whole other level. The hand-breaded
tenders and wings at Slim Chickens are cooked
fresh and served with dipping sauces and fries
or atop a heap of waffles.
GRUB’S BAR AND GRILLE
The original Grub’s opened in downtown
Fayetteville in 2001 and quickly became a
staple among University of Arkansas students,
earning a reputation for having the best burger
in town. Since then, Grub’s has expanded
to include three additional locations in
northwest Arkansas.
ELLA’S RESTAURANT
Ella’s Restaurant in the historic Inn at Carnall
Hall on the University of Arkansas campus serves
up a side of history along with its eclectic menu
and robust wine list. Built in 1906 and named for
Miss Ella Howison Carnall, an associate professor
of English from 1881-84, Carnall Hall was the

NOODLES ITALIAN KITCHEN
This family owned and operated restaurant opened

brewhouse’s home brew competitions.

To their customers and
others in the industry,
they are known for the
best tools and they are
known by one name –
MARSHALLTOWN.
Standing on a proud history of providing superior-quality products to its clients,
Marshalltown celebrated 125 years in business during 2015. Jesse Cyrus and Enoch Lester
Williams went to work as apprentices in a machine shop in Marshalltown, Iowa, at the
ages of 13 and 11 respectively. The Williams brothers formed a company that would
become Marshalltown in 1890. While the history of the company is directly linked to the
success of the Marshalltown trowel, the company makes 5,000 different products for
professionals and do-it-yourselfers to use in asphalt, brick, concrete, drywall, EIFS,
flooring, paint, plaster, stucco, tile and wallpaper applications. To their customers and
others in the industry, they are known for the best tools and they are known by one name
– MARSHALLTOWN. Marshalltown opened its first facility in Fayetteville in 1982 and
followed that with a second facility on Armstrong Avenue. Marshalltown employs over
230 people in Fayetteville including production, shipping, engineering, purchasing,
welding and skilled maintenance positions. www.marshalltown.com

THINGS TO DO
Sports
&
RECREATION
Recreational amenities like
parks, pools, gyms and athletic
programs help residents stay active
throughout the year. Here’s a
look at some of the most popular
facilities and activities:
Fayetteville’s Downtown
Square and Gardens offer a
lush retreat for a pleasant stroll
or moment of meditation in the
center of the city’s entertainment
district. The city maintains
the gardens, where hundreds
of carefully selected flowering
plants, trees and shrubs grow.
Three top recreational
waterways grace the region:
Lake Fayetteville, Lake
Wedington and Beaver Lake.
In 2002, Fayetteville citizens
voiced a desire for a citywide
trails and greenway network,
and today there are more 25 miles
of paved trails throughout the
city, with names like Finger Park
Trail, Lake Sequoyah Trail, Mud
Creek Trail, Scull Creek Trail
and St. Paul Trail. The 36-mile
Razorback Regional Greenway
starts in south Fayetteville and
extends to Bella Vista.
Fayetteville residents can
choose from 70 area parks,
some featuring swimming pools,
tennis courts and athletic fields.
There are also a skate park and
BMX track available for use.
The first phase of city’s newest
park, Mt. Kessler Regional Park,
is expected to be completed
by fall 2016. The park is being
developed on approximately
600 acres of land that is about
half composed of urban forest
with trails that are already
popular among residents. The
new development will include
soccer fields, baseball diamonds,
concession stands, parking and
other associated amenities.
Both public and private
golf courses are easy to find
throughout Fayetteville. Public
venues include Brush Creek
Golf Course and Stonebridge
Meadows Golf Club, while
private facilities include
Blessings Golf Club, Fayetteville
Country Club and Paradise
Valley Athletic Club. In addition,
just down the road is the public
Golf Club at Valley View in
Farmington, and the private
Springdale Country Club.
Arts& CULTURE
Fayetteville’s annual Bikes,
Blues & BBQ festival is one of
the most successful motorcycle
rallies in the country. Billed as the
“world’s largest charity rally,” the
family-friendly event is produced
each September by a nonprofit
organization that has donated
hundreds of thousands of dollars
to local charities.
Also in the fall, Fayetteville
residents celebrate the
contributions and culture of the
area’s Hispanic population at
the Hispanic Heritage Festival,
which includes music, children’s
activities, dance performances
and food. The festival promotes
cultural connection and education.
THINGS TO DO
Arts destinations, museums and community events make cities unique,
draw tourists and keep residents entertained. Here's a snapshot:
To ring in a new year, Last Night
is the biggest New Year’s Eve
party in Arkansas. It’s more
than just a party, though. It’s
also a celebration of performing
arts across the state with dance,
musical performances, theater
and poetry, and even comedy.
Whether you’re into rock,
Americana or the classics, the
free Gulley Park Summer Concert
Series has got it covered with six
shows by various artists, typically
held on Thursday evenings.
For a combination of cultural
experiences ranging from
Broadway performances to visual
art exhibits, visit the Walton
Art Center, which also has a
tremendous educational program
for kids. Northwest Arkansas’
regional theater, the Theater
Squared, puts on plays from
every era of the dramatic arts.
For a peek into the past,
there’s no better way to experience
local history than a walking tour.
From the circa-1853 Headquarters
House and the beautiful old
Washington County Courthouse
to a trip to honor the fallen at
Fayetteville National Cemetery,
a walking tour will give you an
up-close look at where Fayetteville
came from and probably a look at
where it’s going.

NEW INITIATIVE COMBINES
TRADITION WITH INNOVATION
by Heather R. Johnson
F
ayetteville is home
to traditional
manufacturing
companies, a top
research university
and high-tech
startups. Separately, these
entities do well. Together,
they can accomplish much
more. This is the idea behind
“Fayetteville Connect: Together
We Achieve,” a new initiative
launched by the Fayetteville
Chamber of Commerce.
“We are the third-largest
community in the state and
among the most diverse,”
Steve Clark, president and CEO
of the Fayetteville Chamber,
says. “What was once a sleepy
university town has blossomed
into city with a technology park,
a teaching medical school and
traditional manufacturing. All
of these things are Fayetteville
and together, we achieve.”
INNOVATION
FUELS GROWTH
The new initiative
encompasses key developments
that span from the town square
to busy College Avenue. The
Chamber’s move to the square’s
Bradberry Building puts the
agency at the heart of what will
become a designated Innovation
District. In the same building,
the Fayetteville Fab Lab will
offer a maker space with 3D
printers, CNC machines, and
other equipment for prototyping
and designing products.
When workers finish renovation
of the 80-year-old building, it
will include extra meeting space,
local artwork and an installation
comprising multiple flat-screen
TVs that will display an ongoing
image slideshow.
“That’s what innovation
is —change,” Clark says.
Across the street, another
historic building holds the
David and Barbara Pryor Center
for Arkansas Oral and Visual
History as well as Startup
Junkie Consulting, which
fosters emerging start-up/
venture ecosystems. Nearby, in
the former post office building,
Hayseed Ventures, a venture
capital fund, identifies and funds
early-stage start-ups.
“Having Startup Junkie,
Hayseed, the Innovation Hub
and the UofA together ensures
creative collisions between
talent, capital and existing
business can happen naturally
over a cup of coffee or a cold
beer,” says Jeff Amerine, Startup
Junkie founding principal and
Innovate Arkansas adviser.
“Making it easy to collaborate
is a key aspect of any successful
venture scene.”
COLLEGE AVENUE
FLOURISHES
College Avenue
development will also help
attract new residents and
businesses to Fayetteville.

designation in 2010.

Fayetteville
“College Avenue is the
backbone of Fayetteville,”
Clark says of the busy four-lane
highway. “We want to create
destinations on College that
people can walk, bike, or drive to,
and for more than one purpose.”
The College Avenue plan
includes sidewalk and street
tree improvements and a
flyover bridge that has already
contributed to development.
The flyover played a key role
in attracting a Whole Foods
Market, which will anchor
College Marketplace, a sprawling
shopping center filled with retail
and restaurants.
“Whole Foods has always
considered Fayetteville an
important market for its
brand,” Jeff Garrison, partner
for developer S.J. Collins
Enterprises, says. “The city’s
investment in the College
Avenue flyover and Masonic
Avenue traffic signal created
the perfect location.”
Whole Foods and College
Marketplace, which Garrison says
is now 100 percent leased, will
likely bring even more business
to the surrounding area.
“I anticipate that the College

of Arkansas
Avenue corridor will experience
a tremendous amount of new
investment as other retailers look
to capture some of the customers
that Whole Foods will bring to
College Marketplace on a daily
basis,” Garrison says.
THE MOVE FOR PUBLIC ART
While the city works to
beautify College Avenue,
the Chamber partnered with
Fayetteville High School for
students to create a public
mural annually for five years.
“We see public art as a way to
tell our story from the minds of the
younger generation,” Clark says.
Fayetteville’s commitment
to tradition, technology, and
redevelopment has helped it
become the fastest-growing city
in Arkansas, according to a 2015
U.S. Census Bureau report. Its
latest initiatives have the potential
to fuel even more growth.
“The city’s vision for
Fayetteville and, more
importantly, its work to
make that vision a reality, is
remarkable,” Garrison says.
“Our experience in Fayetteville
has been unmatched.”

Schools
EDUCATION
&
Strong schools inspire
homeowners to spend locally,
attract new residents, lure
companies dependent on a skilled
workforce, and in many cases,
enhance a town's entertainment
scene. Here's an overview:
Go Razorbacks! More than
26,000 students attend the
hilltop university that was
founded in 1871 and overlooks
the Ozark Mountains. U of A
today has 10 colleges and schools,
and in 2015 the university’s
medical college (University of
Arkansas for Medical Sciences-
Northwest Campus) added a
new three-year Doctorate of
Physical Therapy program. The
Carnegie Foundation classifies
the University of Arkansas as
having “the highest possible level
of research” and places it among
the top 2 percent of colleges and
universities nationwide.
Spring International Language
Center, located on the U of
A campus, provides English
language training. The Center’s
English nine-week programs
include 25 hours per week of
study to prepare international
students to enter U.S. colleges
and universities, or assist
professionals who desire
to strengthen their English
language skills.
Fayetteville Public Schools
educate more than 9,500 students
in 15 schools, with 710 teachers
and 590 support staff members.
The jewel of the district
is Fayetteville High School,
acknowledged as one of the
country’s finest, with more
Advanced Placement Scholars
annually than any other high
school in Arkansas. FHS
offers 23 Advanced Placement
courses and in 2015 completed
a five-year, $96 million
construction renovation and
expansion that resulted in a
beautiful, functional, LEED
Silver-certified campus.
Students in Fayetteville can
also attend Haas Hall Academy,
a public charter high school that
features 100 percent graduation
and college acceptance rates.
Students and parents also
have several private education
options: Fayetteville Montessori
School, The New School,
Fayetteville Christian School
and St. Joseph Catholic School.

and stimulating growth.

TALENT ATTRACTION
“If this area was not as
multicultural as it is, I would
not be here,” says Javier Reyes,
provost and vice chancellor for
academic affairs at the University
of Arkansas. “I’m originally from
Mexico, but I received my Ph.D
from Texas A&M University.
When I entered the job market,
I came to visit Fayetteville for a
position as an assistant professor
in economics. I was amazed at the
multicultural diversity that exists
in this area. It’s not just important
for me personally, but for my kids,
my family, and my friends.”
Reyes points to the symbiotic
relationship between the region’s
diversity and the presence of the
University of Arkansas as well
as major corporations, such as
Tyson Foods, J.B. Hunt motor
freight carrier, Pinnacle Foods
and Superior Industries, maker
of cast aluminum wheels, as a
reason for the region’s growth.
“When you have a Research 1
university ... and when you have
one of the largest corporations
in the world, people say you’re
going to have a lot of diversity,”
Reyes says. “But I like to turn
that around and say I think this
university and these companies
are so successful because the
culture of diversity is here.”
VALUE OF DIVERSITY
As a business leader, Greg
Fess, president, Pinnacle
Media/Univision Arkansas,
has experienced firsthand the
economic and social value
of diversity.
“Inclusion is so important to
improving the city and bringing
new ideas and enthusiasm, which
enrich the culture,” Fess says.
“We get to experience firsthand
the value of diversity every day
working with both the Latino
and non-Latino communities
[at Univision]. We work with
non-Latino community leaders
for advertising, local events, and
other community interests and
we work hard to be a bridge to
connect Latinos and non-Latinos
together. Bringing these groups
together is powerful and brings
energy and new perspective to
everyone involved.”
Fess says the Fayetteville
Chamber of Commerce is
a prime example of that
cross-cultural collaboration,
partnering with Univision to
sponsor the Northwest Arkansas
Hispanic Heritage Festival, a
multicultural festival focused
livability. com /ar / fayetteville 17
on celebrating diversity and
what the Hispanic culture
has contributed to the region
in music, art, education and
food. The festival has grown
to an attendance of more
than 6,000, becoming more
diverse in its membership and
programs. Chamber and city
leaders have taken three trips
to Fayetteville’s potential sister
city, Panama City, Panama, to
cement relationships between
the two communities.

Fayetteville
Robert A. Baker, AAMS
Financial Advisor
Luis Fernando Restrepo,
professor of Spanish and
assistant vice chancellor for
diversity and community at the
University of Arkansas, contends
that the city’s inclusive culture
has helped improve the quality
of life for all residents.
“The conversation is about
universal access to basic social
services, starting with food and
shelter, but also including equal
education, health, transportation,
recreation,” says Restrepo, who
cites as an example Fayetteville’s
trail system, which makes
“our urban environment more
accessible and human.”
“In addition, the Northwest
Arkansas Council, EngageNWA
and the Cisneros Center
for New Americans have
been working on the just and
sustainable development of
our communities,” he says.

CHAMBER REPORT
Credit Where Credit Is Due
ORGANIZATION EARNS 5-STAR ACCREDITATION FROM U.S. CHAMBER
The Fayetteville Chamber of
Commerce was founded long ago
in 1889, and one of its proudest
accomplishments occurred 126
years later.
In 2015, the chamber was
awarded 5-star accreditation
from the Washington, D.C.based U.S. Chamber of
Commerce, which recognized
the Fayetteville organization for
outstanding contributions to its
1,200 members, the community
and economic development.
Fayetteville is among only 95 of
the 7,022 chambers in America
with 5-star accreditation – the
highest honor.
“Our goal was to be recognized
nationally from coast to coast and
border to border, and now we are
among the best of the best,” says
Steve Clark, Fayetteville Chamber
of Commerce president and CEO.
“The plaque awarded from the U.S.
Chamber proudly hangs in our
building’s conference room, and
we will be 5-star accredited for five
years before we must apply again.”
Clark says achieving 5-star
status involved a rigorous fourmonth process during which the
U.S. Chamber asked for detailed
written information on all aspects
of how the Fayetteville chamber
conducts its business.
“Our application, once
completed, literally included a
couple pounds of paper – the U.S.
Chamber asks about everything,”
he says. “They wanted the
past three years of our audited
financial history along with
details about our programs,
our achievements, leadership
initiatives and so forth. It was an
exhaustive process for our
eight-person staff.”
When listing achievements,
Clark was proud of chamber
efforts such as helping to
get a millage increase so the
Fayetteville Public Schools
district could build a new high
school, and another initiative was
introducing leadership training
workshops to all K-5 students.
“We even mentioned that all
our staff members are trained
in CPR and first aid, in case we
sponsor a festival or public event
and someone in attendance has
an emergency health issue,”
Clark says. “We also informed
the U.S. Chamber that our
building in Fayetteville is a
key gathering place where all
kinds of business gets done,
with the chamber hosting
about 400 meetings a year.”
Clark adds that the goal
throughout the entire
application process was five
stars – nothing less.
“Everyone on our staff and
board of directors takes pride in
what we achieved,” he says. “It’ll
be nice for the next several years
to tell our investors, community
and political leaders that we do
things better than most chambers
in America.” by Kevin Litwin

STRONG
Connections
Fayetteville
s
TRANSPORTATION & UTILITY
ASSETS MOVE ECONOMY FORWARD
by Kevin Litwin
IT HELPS TO HAVE GOOD CONNECTIONS,
and a strong infrastructure network is in place throughout
Fayetteville and the Northwest Arkansas region.
“The Arkansas State Highway
and Transportation Department
has spent $1.3 billion in recent
years on 331 road projects
in Washington County
[Fayetteville] and neighboring
Benton County, especially along
key corridors between the cities
of Fayetteville and Bentonville,”
says Dick Trammel, chairman
of the Arkansas State Highway
Commission. “The future for
highway travel in and around
Fayetteville is really good.”
Major thoroughfares serving
Fayetteville include Interstate
49, U.S. Routes 62 and 71, and
Arkansas Highways 16, 45, 112,
180 and 265.
“A key just-completed road
project was the widening of
Razorback Road (Highway
112) to four and five lanes
between Martin Luther King Jr.
Boulevard and Leroy Pond Drive,
which was especially important
because the road runs along
the parking lots for University
of Arkansas football games,”
Trammel says.
Other big road projects
include the widening of
Highway 16 to four lanes
between Armstrong Avenue
and Stonebridge Road, and
a huge future effort will be
widening the I-49 Corridor
to six lanes and adding
interchanges between Martin
Luther King Jr. Boulevard and
Highway 72 in Bentonville.
“The I-49 Corridor project
should be completed by early
2020 – that’s the one that
people in Fayetteville are really
interested in,” Trammel says.
“One of the fastest-growing areas
in the United States is Northwest
Arkansas, and the Arkansas State
Highway and Transportation
Department is doing its best to
help residents and commerce in
that region move forward.”
ENERGY, AIR AND RAIL
Other key contributors to
the area’s infrastructure network
are AEP Swepco and Ozarks
Electric Cooperative, which
provide electricity to this
region, while SourceGas is the
natural gas provider. Meanwhile,
Fayetteville and Northwest
Arkansas air travelers are
served by Northwest Arkansas
Regional Airport, which opened
in 1998. The airport hosts five
commercial carriers (Allegiant,
American, Delta, United and U.S.
Airways) with numerous direct
flights to many U.S. cities.
As for rail, Fayetteville
companies can move cargo
freight via the Arkansas
Missouri Railroad, which has
operated between Fort Smith,
Arkansas, and Monett, Missouri,
for the past 29 years. The
railroad annually transports
about 36,000 carloads of freight,
hauling commodities such as
sand, grain, poultry products,
frozen products and scrap metal.
“Our railroad contributes
quite a bit to the business
economy of Fayetteville and its
surrounding area because we
serve many manufacturers and
other industries,” says Brenda
Rouse, Arkansas Missouri
Railroad passenger train
operations manager.
Rouse adds that in addition to
the industrial side of business,
the railroad operates a tourism
excursion train whose stops
include Fayetteville, Springdale
and Rogers.
“A lot of people don’t realize
that tourism is one of the
largest industries in Arkansas,
and the A&M excursion line
is a contributor,” she says. “
The train goes through the
Ozark Mountains, with about
40,000 passengers riding the
line each year.”
