UPDATE FROM THE WINEMAKER CHRISTIAN ROGUENANT SPARKLING WINE My first job as a true Winemaker was at Champagne Deutz in France. We made only Champagne and pretty much drank only Champagne. The French Winery later asked me to move to California to start their American venture, Maison Deutz. Here, I made sparkling wines in the French tradition. Champagne is called such because the grapes are grown in the Champagne region of France. Wine made elsewhere in this style is called sparkling wine. I have always loved making and drinking bubbles. I am lucky enough to once again make sparkling wine for Niven Family Wine Estates. The Brut Rose is a blend of 82% Pinot Noir and 18% Chardonnay. It gets its color from time spent on the skins of the Pinot Noir just after harvest. The Blanc de Blancs is made from Chardonnay grapes and is called such because it is 100% Chardonnay, white from white. These wonderful sparkling wines are now released and available in the tasting room at the Independence Schoolhouse. It is a great addition around the Thanksgiving table and for the holiday season. However, while we all appreciate bubbles during this time, please help me spread the word that Champagne and sparkling wines are not made to be enjoyed for only special occasions, they are meant for every occasion! We hope you love it as much as we do! … More to come on the new label designs. FEATURED RECIPE Tortellini Soup In a large pot, heat 2 Tbsp. olive oil. Add 1 chopped onion and as many sliced/chopped vegetables as you can fit in the pot. (I like to add mushrooms, celery, zucchini, carrots, and artichoke hearts.) Add 1 bag frozen, chopped spinach. Cook down until pot is approximately 1/2 full. Add 1/2 jar tomato basil marinara sauce and 1/3 c. “better than bouillon” concentrate. Add approximately 3 cups water. Simmer for one hour. This vintage of El Pico is balanced and beautifully extracted with aromas of strawberry jam, cherry and vanilla. There is a hint of cotton candy along with traces of cinnamon throughout the wine. The crisp, clean fruit matches well with silky sweet oak tannins. The oak provides a nice backbone, but does not over power the balanced acidity. This medium bodied Pinot finishes with delightful strawberry notes. We got some very exciting news this month, we received high honors from the internationally acclaimed Six Nations Wine Challenge held annually in Australia. Our 2013 Baileyana S-BAR Pinot Noir was awarded the coveted RED WINE OF SHOW TROPHY, and our 2013 Tangent Albariño received a DOUBLE GOLD MEDAL. The RED WINE OF SHOW TROPHY was won by beating out every medal winner in all eight red varieties including Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz/Syrah, Meritage, Bordeaux Blends, Other Red Varieties and Pinot Noir. A Wine Writer from each country selected wines from their country to enter into the competition which judged nearly 600 wines. American Judge and wine columnist Dan Berger submitted our 2013 Tangent Albariño and the 2013 Baileyana S-BAR Pinot Noir. The countries competing for awards were: Argentina, Australia, Chile, New Zealand, South Africa and The United States.
