Principal’s News
We hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday break! It’s hard to believe that 2016 is here!
We realize that changes often occur over the holidays and want to take a moment to remind you of the importance of keeping the school informed of any changes at home. Please
make sure you keep the school informed of any changes of address or phone numbers. This is
especially important as cold and flu season approaches and you may need to be contacted in
case of illness.
Also, please remember that anyone picking up your child needs to be listed on the pick-up
list. All persons picking up students in the office need to bring picture identification or the
red number card with them. Please remember, this is for your child’s safety.
Report cards will come home with your child soon. You will also receive a MAP report.
Please review scores with your child and discuss how they did. When you attended parent/
teacher conferences in the fall, you discussed goals with your child’s teacher. Make sure you
review those goals with your child and discuss next steps to ensure continued success.
If you have questions about your child’s MAP scores, please contact your child’s teacher or
my administration team and we will be happy to discuss them with you. We are available to sit
down as a team with you and your child’s teacher or meet with you individually.
One final reminder – when bad weather threatens, please check the news outlets listed under Inclement Weather in this issue for important weather announcements!

SBDM Committee’s Invite
Our SBDM Committees
are underway and working
hard to review our policies
and will be working with administration
to ensure the rest of the year is on
track for a successful year. They will
also be working on things for the upcoming year. Our committees have been
asked to reach out to parents to invite
them to sit on the committees with
them so please watch for information
to come home about this. Your involvement with our SBDM committees is encouraged. Your voice matters to NPS!
Marco’s Pizza
Homeroom Challenge
Newport Primary has partnered with Marco’s Pizza
for the Homeroom Challenge – everybody wins! On
the 3rd Tuesday of every month (January 19th) order Marco’s Pizza (dine-in, carry-out, or delivery)
and Newport Primary will receive a kickback of 15%
of the order. It’s simple – when ordering, just mention the name of your homeroom teacher (and feel
free to use your existing coupons or take advantage
of the daily specials). Marco’s will tally the total for
all the homeroom teachers and send Newport Primary a check for 15% of that total. The homeroom
teacher with the highest individual total wins a Free
Pizza Lunch for that class! So please mark your calendar and encourage your friends and neighbors to
join our cause.
Nurse’s Notes
Happy New Year!
Welcome back. I hope you all are rested and feeling healthy from our break.
Now back to health requirements!
I have contacted parents who still needed to turn in paperwork regarding state requirements.
I am also following up with kindergarten parents who have not turned in vision exams and dental
screening.
A vision exam must be performed by an eye doctor, either an ophthalmologist or optometrist.
A dental screening can be provided by the local Health Department, who is coming to our school in
January. Paperwork was sent home with your student for you to complete and return in November.
This was for all of our Primary students including Pre-school.
Of course, your family dentist may also do this exam as a part of a routine checkup that children
should receive twice a year.
Both screenings and exams need to be on a KY form. Those can be picked up at the front office if
your provider does not have access to KY forms.
If your child needs to take medication at school, please have the doctor complete our school form to
take prescription medicine. Parents, please bring medicine to the front desk in person, do not send
with students.
If you have any questions or concerns with your child/children’s health please do not hesitate to call
or stop by my office.
Stay healthy, and encourage your children to wash their hands often.

Counselor’s Corner
Expect more responsibility in 2016!
The beginning of a new year is a great time to start
teaching your child to be responsible. Here are some
suggestions:
• Expect your child to get up by him/herself
in the morning. Even a first grader can learn
to set an alarm clock. Have your child wake
you up after they have gotten up themselves,
so you can help with the morning routine.
• Teach your child how to do laundry. A young child can
help sort clothes before washing and fold
and put them away when they’re dry. An
older child can learn how to use a washing
machine.
• Help your child manage money. Whether
it’s money from a birthday gift or an allowance, expect your child to put some aside for
savings. Talk to your child about the importance of saving money for college.
• Ask your child to help. Every family member should do
something that helps out the whole family.
A young child can set or clear the table.
An older child can learn how to prepare a
simple meal. Be sure to say thank you
when your child’s help makes your home run more
smoothly.
• Volunteer. Make time for your family
to volunteer together. Doing something
for others builds responsibility.
**The more responsible your child becomes at a
young age, the more likely he/she will be a responsible adult.

ACCESS Testing
ACCESS for ELLs testing will occur in January and February for
our English Language Learners
(ELLs) in Newport. Students will
be tested in their ability to speak,
listen, read, and write in English.
If your student is an English Language Learner, please make sure
he or she comes to school and is
well rested! We will send test results home in early April.

Shop with a Cop
As Newport Police Officer John Dunn helped
shepherd 22 children and
their shopping buddy officers into the Newport
Target store, he knew the
children were excited to
be able to buy things they
really need this Christmas.
"I have organized the
Shop with a Cop for the
last 7 years, and the kids
are always happy to
come," Dunn said. "We
have $200 to spend on
each of them, and we like
to have them spend about
half of it on clothes and
shoes, or coats, and the
rest can be spent on
toys."
The children are chosen
from the Newport
schools, primary and intermediate, so that the
children range in age
from 5 to 11. Once the
kids finish shopping, they
go back to the Police Department at 10th and
Monmouth Streets to
have lunch. Dunn said
their major helpers are
Jersey Mike's, Newport,
and Papa John's, Southgate.

be singing the Star
Spangled Banner at
an NKU Men's Basketball game on Jan.

Practical Living and
Career Studies…
Teaching more than just Reading and Math at
NPS!
So, What is PLCS?
Each year, NPS is evaluated in the program review area of PLCS (Practical Living & Career
Studies). Areas of PLCS include instruction in
Health, Physical Education, Consumerism and Careers.
Lessons in each of these 4 areas are taught at
NPS throughout the year in classrooms at NPS.
YOU CAN HELP!
Health: Talk to your kids about
healthy habits; see if they are able
to name habits that can keep them
healthy such as hand washing, sleep,
exercise, violence prevention and
eating healthy foods.
Physical Education: Encourage your children to
play outside, run, and jump. Jumping
rope, hopping on one foot and
DANCING are all great physical activities to get bodies and minds
working!
Consumerism: Talk with your kids
about money, saving, the difference
between wants and needs. Have them
set goals for saving and spending.
Careers: Begin exploring and pointing out various
careers with your children. Talk to them about
what their interests are and have them begin to
think about what they would like to be “when they
grow up.” Talk with them about the steps to meet
that goal such as reading and math skills, responsibility and attendance.
