A WOMAN’S WRITE NEWSLETTER FOR BETWEEN FRIENDS Summer 2008: Volume 10, Issue 2 Building a Community Without Domestic Violence Channel 11 Spotlights Between Friends! WTTW/Channel 11 aired a piece on our long-standing partner- Communities in Schools of Chicago. Our own Yolanda Owens and Karen Seck were highlighted in this special segment as they presented the Preventing Early Adolescent Conflict through Education (PEACE) program to a classroom of 5th graders. Students learn how to prevent bullying among their classmates through the PEACE program. In this issue: • A Survivor’s Story • Executive Director's Corner • Save The Date • Donor’s List • Bubble Ball a Success! • Wish List • Training Illinois Educators • National Council of Jewish Women Turns a Page • Workplace Giving A Survivor’s Story Beth, a 45-year old mother, came to Between Friends two years ago in search of counseling and support. What she found was a welcoming, non-judgmental space where counselors and fellow survivors were ready to help her in the process of healing from domestic violence. In her words, here is her story: I have [worked] in social services for 12 years after obtaining a Master's in Public Health, but I discovered that I could not see [the abuse] clearly in my own life. My ex-husband spent years staging accidents- he would step on my toes, bump my hot coffee cups, shut my fingers in drawers, flush the toilet purposely to scald me in the shower, trip me as I walked past him, move the car abruptly before I could fasten my seat belt- the list goes on and on.These accidents were always my fault, I was in the wrong place, I was too slow, and I was too clumsy. And I believed him, for years. He would yell in my face, with his big white teeth gritted into a grimace, telling me how inadequate I was, how poorly I cleaned the house (a big complaint) and how badly I treated him. After the birth of our son he would daily tell me what a bad mother I was, what I was doing wrong. It was with the pregnancy that I began to question the marriage. As a five foot, 100 pound woman at the start of the pregnancyabout the size of your average twelve year old child- I carried and delivered a nine pound two ounce boy. My ex-husband had me mopping floors, carrying our elderly dog up and down the three flights of stairs, climbing child gates all over the apartment. I worked a full time demanding job right up to the week before delivery. I remember sitting on the couch vomiting into a bucket- I did that a lot during my pregnancy- and he came in screaming at me about walking the dog as if nothing was happening. I almost threw the bucket of vomit at him, but managed to control myself. With a new baby on the way I started to think, oh my god, I have to end this marriage, how can I do it? Through a series of calls I was connected to Between Friends. I cannot express enough gratitude! Learning that I was truly being abused, learning that [the abuse] was real was a liberating, life enhancing experience. After over two years of help from Between Friends, who provided me with individual counseling, counseling for my little son, art therapy, a healthy relationship workshop, self help groups, financial counseling, legal referrals, child care during all these services, support and encouragement, I divorced my abusive spouse, moved on with my life, sought healing, and recently married a wonderful friend who is warm, supportive, encouraging and absolutely in love with me. My life is so different, so whole. I still have more healing to do, but I now have knowledge, (continued on page 2) Carl Greer, a generous supporter of Between Friends, accepts our “Friend of the Year” Award in recognition of his commitment to our agency over the past four years. The Matt Reed Band entertains guests at the 1st Annual Bubble Ball Gala on March 8th to raise money for Between Friends' programs and services. See details and more photos on page 5. The Executive Director’s Corner Dear Friends, I wanted to share with you an article I wrote for our May alumni newsletter entitled "Always Friends". Between Friends participated in a press conference on April 7th at the Chicago Metropolitan Battered Women's Network alongside U.S. Senator Dick Durbin and Representative Jan Schakowsky. The press conference urged the President to restore the federal funding cuts he made to programs that serve victims of domestic violence. The President slashed the $2 million balance in the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) Fund meaning a 29% cut in funding for programs in Illinois. Currently there is over $2 billion in the VOCA fund, and the Bush administration refuses to distribute these funds for the purposes intended. The administration also cut $120 million in life saving DV services created and provided by the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA.) Due to these cuts, both services and staff in the Chicago land area and across the state are being eliminated. Unfortunately the state has not been able to make up the shortfall. Due to these ongoing and increasing funding cuts from both the public and private sector, Between Friends also sustained a staff reduction this year - the first time in our history. This comes at a time when you can't open the newspaper without reading how Mersaides McCauley was shot by her ex-boyfriend outside her church; Cindy Bishoff was shot by her ex boyfriend; and Sophia Garcia was found dead with a plastic bag over her head while her husband abducted the children - Oscar 6, Karla 7, and Fernando 11. An 18-year old woman was doused with lighter fluid and lit on fire by her boyfriend. He put her in a bathtub to put the flames out and drove her to the hospital telling them it was a barbeque accident. She was so badly burned that it took 2 months before she was able to tell the police her boyfriend set her on fire. Luz Villegas was stabbed 29 times by her husband. Her sister-in-law said, "She was just trying to survive each day" but she didn't. Your call to action is simple. Contribute your time, your talent, and your treasures to Between Friends. Become a board member, a Circle of Friends donor, or a Court Advocacy volunteer. Call your federal, state, and local legislators and ask them to reinstate and/or increase funding for domestic violence services. Take action that will make a difference in the lives of the women and children we serve. Kathleen A. Doherty Executive Director A Survivor’s Story cont. Challenge Grant Double Your Dollar! One of our generous donors has offered to match the next $100,000 in donations to Between Friends! A $50 donation is actually worth $100. So help us reach the $100,000 goal. You Can make a Difference! With a donation of $50, $100, or $250 your money will go twice as far to help end the cycle of domestic violence. tools and support to nurture that healing. Our Women and Children's Program provides support, advocacy, community, and most importantly a safe space for survivors to express their range of thoughts, feelings, and emotions after living in and surviving an abusive relationship. Often people reach out to us because they have heard of our program through our Crisis Line (800-603-HELP), a friend, or another supportive place. People find us in many different ways and often we find them, providing off-site groups and trainings for others in the community. Currently our counseling team is focused on enriching our group programming, realizing the valuable experiences that occur when we pro- vide space for victims to heal in connection to other survivors of abuse. Every year, our Women and Children's Program provides services to approximately 125 women and 64 children. However, we need your support to continue to provide these services, especially in light of a number of funding cuts in the coming year. You can donate directly to our Nancy Clay Freedom Fund which provides emergency funding for transportation, security deposits, medical bills, grocery store gift cards, and dental and eye care expenses for domestic violence survivors. If you are interested, please contact our Director of Development, Amanda Espitia at 773-274-5232 x 16. The Relationship Education: A Choice for Hope (R.E.A.C. H.) Program was invited to speak at the 6th Annual Illinois Coalition for School Health Centers Conference on May 15 and 16 in Springfield, Illinois. Quintina Brown, Prevention and Education Manager, and Karen Seck, Prevention and Education Specialist, presented the workshop entitled "Teen Dating: Relationship Violence and Coercion." This workshop was designed to educate and train school personnel about the dynamics, resources, and preventative strategies pertaining to teen relationship violence. Participants discussed the growing problems they see in their schools and explored solutions. This was a wonderful opportunity to share our program, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with the Illinois Coalition for School Health Centers. A WOMAN’S WRITE The National Council of Jewish Women Turns a Page In 1986, the Evanston-Niles Chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women was instrumental in founding Between Friends. In June this chapter closed its doors ending a long and successful history. Members of NCJW have served on our board, answered our crisis line, assembled our mailings, and donated funds that have helped us grow our services. We would like to thank some of the many women who have advocated tirelessly on behalf of battered women and their children: Lorraine Berman and Rose Adelman were members of our very first board. Other board members since then include Gloria Mitchell, Esta Kallen, Ellie Kramer, Ruth Friedman, as well as Sally Isaacs who served for many years until her recent death. Special thanks go out to Lillian Miller, our longest standing volunteer with over 22 years of service on our crisis line, who presented Between Friends with a check for $3,000 at their final luncheon on May 12th. A thank you also goes out to Esona Wernick who, like clockwork, was here every Wednesday morning to answer our crisis line. Although this chapter is closing, we look forward to seeing Lillian continue to answer crisis calls each week and Henrietta Edelmen helping staff with special projects.
