President’s Message
Quilting with Nancy
Dear Quilters,
When the weather starts to turn warmer, the days get longer, and
the sap rises in the adolescents, it’s time for a break with our quilting
buddies. Every year at about this time, we all start looking forward
to our next creative adventure. This year’s spring retreat at McPherson College sounds especially appealing.
Our national teachers are Bonnie Lyn McCaffery and Marsha
McCloskey who will bring us knowledge about their quilting specialties. Bonnie Lyn is known for her portrait quilts while Marsha’s
feathered stars are dear to many of us as we dream of the next big
project. Your board decided that we would offer the same workshops twice from each of these talented teachers so more of our
members get in on the fun.
This year’s sign-up will be hard, as the offerings from our terrific local teachers look to have something for everyone. I’ve already
looked at the list, and I can honestly say that there’s not a “B” team
in the group. Your own interest will guide you to the best class for
you, and I think I can guarantee that no matter what you choose,
you will have a great time.
And if that wasn’t enough----the quilter gift is going to be very
popular. Every year, your board goes through all the suggestions the
membership makes, and we try to accomodate as many wishes as
possible. Keep giving input to your board members and we’ll keep
listening.
My last thought is about time. You’re reading this now. Get out
your pen, circle June 2-4, 2006 on your calendar, mark your choices
for classes, call your roommate, force her/him to also make their
class choices, send your registration in, then sit back and wait for
June. DON’T put this on the back burner. Your favorite classes
will fill quickly. I’ll be having more fun than you, and you won’t be
happy. Make plans NOW. I can hardly wait!!
See you in McPherson,
Nancy Swanwick

About the Teachers—
 Featured Quilt Artists 
Marsha McCloskey
is well kn own
throughout the quilting world. A Graphic Arts
major in college, she turned from printmaking to
quiltmaking in 1969 as motherhood made the messier
media impractical. Marsha sold her earliest quilting
efforts at the weekly Saturday Market in Eugene,
Oregon. She found that the more quilts, potholders
and baby blocks she sold, the more she had to make to
replace them. She developed her skills as a seamstress
and fabric artist through such daily practice. She made
patchwork gift items for craft fairs and gift shops in the
Northwest and California for many years. In 1975, Marsha began to teach
quiltmaking at her local quilt store. Since then she has taught classes and
workshops for groups in the Seattle area where she lived for many years, as well
as for conferences and quilt guilds in 40 different states (so far!) throughout
the USA. In 1990, she taught her first international workshop in Australia.
Since then she has been invited to teach in New Zealand, Holland, Belgium,
France, Canada, Japan, Norway and Denmark.
Marsha specializes in Feathered Star designs. Her quilts have a traditional
look, yet are an inspiration to quilters of every sort. Her exceptional sense
of color encourages others to branch out into new color schemes and fabric
uses. Marsha’s designs for multi-fabric, rotary-cut and machine-pieced quilts
can all be made by the average quilter.
Her first book, Small Quilts was published in 1981 and is the book that
countless quilters have used to make their very first quilts. Since then she has
written or co-authored over 20 books on quiltmaking. Today, Marsha continues
to make and design quilts, write quilt books, travel and teach. Her recent
books include, Blended Quilts, written with co-author Sharon Yenter (2002),
Feathered Star Quilt Blocks I (2003), and Blended Quilts II (2004).
Marsha has her own small publishing company called Feathered Star
Productions, Inc., and is the designer of quilting fabrics under the Clothworks
label from FASCO. Visit Marsha’s web site at www.marshamcloskey.com.
Bonnie McCaffery has been quilting for
over twenty years. Her quilts have been exhibited across
the country. In 1994, she had her first solo exhibit of
her quilts at the Gingerbread Gallery.
She was chosen as the recipient of the Jewel Pearce
Patterson Scholarship Award in 1998 and traveled
to Europe to attend European Quilt Market and
International Quilt Expo in Austria (WOW what a
trip). Since then she has returned to Europe to teach in
England, Scotland, Ireland, and France. She returned
to England and Scotland in August 2001 for another
exciting adventure, and she had another trip to Denmark and Sweden in
March/April 2002.
Bonnie’s quilts have been seen in such publications as American Quilters
Society Magazine, Quilting International, Quilters’ Newsletter Magazine and
Craftworks.
She has appeared twice on Simply Quilts - once with Fantasy Fabric and
once with the Portrait Quilts.
Bonnie specializes in kaleidoscope quilts, freeform appliqué quilts, dimensional quilts, layered
quilts, Fantasy Fabric, Fantasy Floral quilts and her
newest venture - Painted Faces. She loves visiting
with guilds everywhere and sharing her quilts and
inspiration. Her goals are to travel, teach, and create
visually pleasing fabric wall quilts that work well
in homes and offices.
Bonnie has published a book Portrait Quilts,
Painted Faces You Can Do and also has paint,
brushes, fabrics and other supplies for portrait
quilts available on her website. To learn more, visit
Bonnie’s website at www.bonniemccaffery.com.
Elaine Boese
Delectable Mountains Miniature
Elaine was introduced to quilt making in 1988
when she went to a guild meeting in Emporia,
Kan., and has been hooked ever since. After her
husband transplanted her to north central Kansas
in 1990, she quit her day job and seriously began
quilting. She is a co-founder and charter member
of Solomon Valley Quilt Guild and has been
newsletter editor for the last 12 years.
She has several lectures and trunk shows and also
teaches classes. She has been featured in Miniature
Quilts magazine and has had quilts appear in four
issues of that magazine. Elaine’s quilts also appear in
the book, The Best of Miniature Quilts Volume III.
Earlier this year, Elaine and her family moved
to Marysville, Kansas where her husband Rick,
accepted a new job. Elaine has been busy unpacking
and setting up new studio space at their new
home. She has not yet joined a guild in her new
location, but intends to search out local quilting
opportunities as soon as she is settled.
Elaine Craft
Fine Machine Appliqué
Elaine is a native Kansan and a third-generation
quilter. She has an avid interest in appliqué and has
been piecing quilts for more than 35 years. She has
taught a variety of appliqué techniques and other
quilting classes over the years at six quilt shops, and
a mini workshop at Quilters’ Day Out 2003.
She is a member of Walnut Valley Quilt Guild
and has served on the board as pattern chairman.
She has been a member of KQO for a number of
years and enjoys the friends she makes through

quilting, as well as the new skills learned
through taking classes.
Elaine and her husband Rick, live
at Sedan, Kansas. They have a son, a
daughter, and two grandsons who love the
educational quilts that Grandma makes
for them. Elaine is a Registered Nurse and
works full time.
Deana Hartman
The Artful Needle Book
A self-taught artist, Deana is University
of Northern Iowa education graduate
and an English education graduate from
Iowa State University. She’s studied
with internationally known quilt artists
including David Walker; Jane Sassaman;
the art-quilt team of Susan Shie and James
Acord; Wendy Huhn and Nancy Eha. She
has been teaching quilting since 1997.
“I create original designs sculpted by
fabric, extensive free-motion quilting
and beaded embellishment. My works
reflect diverse topics from the spiritual
realm, to nature, to technology. In recent
Moonstone series works, I incorporate my
love of reading and writing in ‘speaking
quilts.’ These art quilts contain sewn
writings of inspired phrases, thoughts and
famous quotations.” Deana has been featured in Quilting
Arts Magazine, Fall 2004 (Bead Collage)
and Fall 2001 (Artist Spotlight), as well
as the 2003 Calendar. She’s also been
published in the Kansas City Star, Kansas
City Artist’s Coalition’s publication, Show
and Tell; Quilter’s Newsletter and The
Point; a Sprint Corporation internal
magazine article, “The Net Worth of Art
and Science.” She will be featured next year
in the School of Colour book on color in
quilts. She was also be featured on the new
HGTV Series, Crafters Coast to Coast
in the Fall of 2004, talking about The
Artful Needle Book. Deana’s art quilts can
be found in corporate, as well as private
collections across the United States.
Born in Omaha, Nebraska, Deana was
raised in Fort Dodge, Iowa. She met her
husband Wayne, in Neal Bower’s poetry
class at Iowa State University and married
him two years later. As a “Navy Wife,” she
was fortunate to live in interesting places
and to meet many types of people. During
their first eight years of marriage, they
lived in Honolulu, Hawaii; San Diego,
California; Norwich, Connecticut and
Groton, Connecticut. After a short time
back in Hudson, Iowa, their family moved
to Kansas City in 1996. Deana now lives
in the Kansas City Metro area with Wayne,
daughter Kayla, a Cairn terrier named
Zoë, two tanks of fish, and a herd of cats. (No, really, they are a herd!)
Tresa Jones
Hand Applique – Amelia’s Bouquet
Tresa learned needlework skills at an
early age from her mother, Shirley Coats
Vogelman. This grew into a love of all kinds
of handwork and particularly of quilting.
The purchase of a Cherry Basket quilt
originally made in 1868 began her interest
in the historical nature of quiltmaking and
quilt makers. Tresa connects the past and
the present in her lectures and workshops
with passion, excitement and spirit, and
offers a window into the future.
Tresa has quilts published in “Hearts and
Flowers - Hand Appliqué From Start To
Finish” (2002) and “A Heartland Album
- More Appliqué Techniques” (2003), both
published by Kansas City Star Books.
She is a member of the Quilt Lover’s
Guild (co-founder and president, 1993),
American Quilters’ Society (quilt juried
into 1998 show), International Quilters
Association, The Appliqué Society and the
Heartland Quilt Network.
She has been teaching at the Sunflower
Quilt Shop since the beginning of 2002.

Jeanne Poore
Traveler’s Star – Two size options
Jeanne is married to her high-school
sweetheart and has two grown children
and three grandchildren. She was born in
Washington County, Ks., in her maternal
grandparents’ farm home.
Both her maternal and
paternal grandmothers
were quilters and her
great-grandmother also
quilted. She grew up in
Kansas City, Ks., and
has lived in Overland
Park for 37 years. Although she sewed
and quilted from an early age (first fullsize quilt made at age 13), she didn’t get
into organized quilting until 1986, when
she joined her first guild. She likes all the
facets of the quiltmaking process, from
designing to the hand quilting. Jeanne
believes instructing is very rewarding. “I
meet such interesting people, learn from
them and continue to study, take classes
and workshops in order to keep up with
new techniques and products.” Oldfashioned traditional patterns containing
lots of different fabrics (scrappy looks) are
her favorites, but she loves it all.
Jeanne has published patterns including
two Block-a-Month series based on Kansas
City Star Patterns, as well as other traditional
patterns and some original designs. The
book STAR QUILTS – The Legendary
Kansas City Star Quilt Patterns, published
by the Kansas City Star Newspaper, featured
patterns redrafted by Jeanne in the Fall of
1999. Her book REDWORK SANTA’S
PARADE OF NURSERY RHYME QUILTS
was published in 2000; FAN QUILT
MEMORIES published in 2001. She
was featured in the book KANSAS CITY
QUILTMAKERS. Several of her quilts have
also been published in Quilting Today and
Traditional Quiltworks Magazines as well
as being on the covers. Her quilt Morning
Star is in the book CELEBRATE THE
SEASONS WITH QUILTS published in
2001. Contact Jeanne at jepodesigns@

Join us at McPherson College
For Spring Retreat
June 2-4, 2006
Plans are underway to bring the membership to a new
college campus in McPherson this year. Our 2006 retreat
will be held on the beautiful McPherson College campus
at 1600 East Euclid, in McPherson, Kansas. This campus
offers large classrooms, elevators and drive-up accessibility
for delivering sewing machines to the classroom buildings.
The college will accommodate us in recently remodeled
dormitory lodging and we have been assured that fine dining
for summer guests is a priority at McPherson College.
Retreats, which are held in the spring of the year, offer a
wide variety of full-day workshops on Friday and Saturday
and give everyone an opportunity to take a workshop or two.
We are pleased to have Bonnie McCaffery from Pennsylvania
and Marsha McCloskey from Oregon as our national
teachers. Each will present two workshops and two lectures
during the weekend. In addition, we are pleased to have a
number of regional teachers holding workshops throughout
the weekend. They are: Deana Hartman, Elaine Craft,
Jeanne Poore, Elaine Boese, Tresa Jones and Frances Shearer.
Details regarding the workshops and lectures are available in
this newsletter and also on our web site at www.ksquilters.
org or www.ksquilters.com or www.ksquilters.net.
If you’ve attended a Spring Retreat in the past you’ll
remember how much fun they are: learning and sharing new
quilting techniques, the abundance of good food and the
camaraderie of quilters from all over the state. Of course you
will also have the opportunity to turn your travel to and from
McPherson into a mini “shop hop” and the Buttonhole and
vendors on campus will provide more inspirational shopping
as the weekend progresses.
Dormitory accommodations are for two people in a room
and roommates will be assigned unless you notify us at the
time of registration that you have a roommate request. If
you want to room with someone in particular you will
need to make arrangements with that person in advance,
the registration mailing date for this event will be April 14,
2006 and the registration deadline will be May 5, 2006.
Dormitory rooms are limited and the college needs advance
notice to accommodate our needs. Please be sure to send
your registration in promptly if you want to stay on campus.
You can also choose a registration option without lodging if
you prefer to stay in a motel.
Welcome to Life in the Dormitory
McPherson College will be housing 100 of us in
Dotzour Hall for Spring Retreat 2006. All dorm rooms
are double occupancy and have communal restrooms
located in each hallway. This dorm has been recently
renovated and will afford us convenient and pleasant
housing on one level. Please indicate on the registration
form if you have any accessibility or dietary needs. If
you wish to room with a specific person(s) please mail
your registration forms in the same envelope. We will
make every effort to accommodate your requests. On
campus housing is limited to the first 100 registrations
requesting dormitory lodging.
What is Provided: Each attendee will be issued a
room key at registration. No towels or sheets will be
provided.
What You Should Bring: You will want to bring your
own pillow, blanket, sheets, towels, soap and other
personal items, an ice chest and drinks if desired,
comfortable clothing and shoes.
Emergency Contact: Contacts can be made by calling

on classroom locations. Room keys will need to be
returned at checkout Sunday morning as you enter
Mingenback Theatre for the general meeting. If a key
is lost there will be a $50 replacement fee payable
by the attendee.
Registration Form: Be sure to read the registration
form carefully. Fill it out completely and mail within
the designated dates. Do not mail before April 14.
Registrations received with a postmark before this date
will be held and processed with registrations postmarked
on April 15. Complying with this mailing date will allow
all KQO members an equal chance at the workshops.
Please note that some workshops have kit or material fees

may also have other materials and books available for
sale which may be purchased if you desire.
Sit and Stitch: An area will be available in the lobby of the

are also lovely seating areas for hand stitching during the
day located in the Union and the Science Hall.
Don’t miss this opportunity to gather with fellow Kansas
quilters for a GREAT RETREAT in McPherson.
Parking at McPherson College: The best parking will be for people to come to Kansas Ave. (the main East/West Street in
McPherson) and turn on Eshelman St. They will see the McPherson College Arch and the SU as well as Dotzour Hall where they

Travelers Star
Jeanne Poore
Available in Two Sizes-choose either 12 inch blocks or 6 ¾ inch blocks
This is a very scrappy quilt. Jeanne chose fabrics that gave the appearance of
antique quilts. Fat quarters work well for this variation of the traditional Ohio
Star pattern. Using quick cutting and piecing techniques taught in class, you too
can make this antique appearing quilt. A great way to display your fabrics.

Fabric Painting Techniques
Frances Shearer
This class is to teach you how to create your own unique fabrics. You don’t
have to be an artist to paint on fabric. Come relax, play and don’t come
with a specific result in mind. You will be working with colors you like and
having fun. Go home with 10-12 fat quarters (and a few other surprises)
ready to put in that next quilting project plus some paints so you can show
your friends how easy and fun it was to do. Each student will be provided
a kit at a cost of $25.00 to be paid in class. Kit will include 10-12 fat
quarters and a package of nine Jacquard Dye-Na-Flow paints.

project you won’t miss them one bit. The class takes the Delectable
Mountains pattern and turns it into a quick and easy miniature quilt
that you should be able to be completed in class. You will be given a
variety of ways to put your mountain peaks together and you won’t
want to make just one. Students will learn the super simple technique
for making the Delectable Mountains block, tips and techniques on
constructing miniatures, and the secrets to making a 1/8” border.

Lectures by our Featured National Teachers
Join us Friday evening, June 2nd, in the Mingenback Theatre
located on the campus of McPherson College, McPherson, Ks.,
at 8 pm for Block Party, a lecture and slide presentation (approx.
1 hour). This is Quilt Design 101. Marsha McCloskey has
about 30 years of quilting experience to share with you, so come
ready to learn and be inspired. See a lot of her quilts as she shares
the “whys and wherefores” of her color and design choices.
Also join us in the Mingenback Theatre for Portrait Quilts, a
lecture by Bonnie McCaffery on Saturday Evening, June 3rd at
8:00 pm (1 hour). Everyone loves a face. There is a wide variety
of ways to capture people in quilts. This lecture will explore
many different peoples’ portrait quilts. You will also see how
easily Bonnie creates her own portrait quilts using a guideline
drawing under the fabric (so she can see exactly where to paint
the features) - a fast-paced slide lecture with actual quilts.
Check out Bonnie’s book “Portrait Quilts: Painted Faces You
Can Do.” See some Portrait Quilts on Bonnie’s website www.
BonnieMcCaffery.com.
Evening lectures may be attended by quilters who are not
otherwise attending the retreat for a fee of $5 for each lecture.
The $5 fee is to be paid at the door. No advance registration
is required if you are only attending these evening lectures.
All lectures are included in the registration fee paid by retreat
attendees.
During the KQO meeting on Sunday, June 4th, registered
attendees will gather in the Mingenback Theatre at 9 am, and will
enjoy Inspiration & Development of a Quilt Artist - a slide
show presented by Bonnie McCaffery. Traveling through time,
we will witness the evolution of one quilter, from traditional
bed quilts to contemporary wall pieces. You will see what has
influenced some of the quilter’s designs. This is a FAST-paced
slide lecture. It is a favorite for all because there is a wide variety
of quilt styles.
Sunday morning, June 4th, we will also hear from Marsha
McCloskey as she presents Feathered Star Quilts - a lecture
and slide presentation (approx. 1 hour). The Feathered Star
is among the best loved and most prized designs in American
patchwork. This lecture is a collection of slides and historical
information collected by Marsha McCloskey, who has made
design her specialty and written Feathered Star Quilts and the
Feathered Star Sampler.
There will be an opportunity to buy books, patterns and other
items from the featured national teachers, as well as from some
of our regional teachers following the evening lectures and at
the KQO Board Meeting on Sunday.
Local quilt guilds will also have an opportunity to display their
opportunity quilts. Remember to bring your supply of dollar
bills and address labels!
Quilt Block Exchange
Members who wish to participate can make as many blocks as
they want designed by the featured quilt instructors and bring
them to the retreat. All blocks submitted are put together in
groupings of six, nine, or more – enough to make a wall quilt.
For each block submitted, the member has his/her name entered
into the drawing held at the KQO Business Meeting, to win
a set of blocks. Be sure to attach your name printed on two
pieces of paper to each block submitted, one will go into the
drawing, and the other will stay with the block so the recipient
can identify the maker of the blocks received.

most of my interests are cooking (of which I do very little these days),
quilting (more unfinished projects started than I will ever get done) and
recently weaving (just took a class and I could get hooked real easy). I also
like to travel to visit the grandchildren, friends and new places of interest to
me. Tammy and I have been able to visit Europe, England and New York on
several occasions. I am looking forward to a trip to China in September.
“I met my husband Ed my junior year of college and we were married in June
of 1966. We moved to Hays in the fall of 1968. I taught in Ellis and Ed started
his career of many years at Fort Hays State University. Ed and I had three
children, Terri, Tammy and Timothy. Terri is married and has two children,
Hannah and Nickolas, and resides in Naperville, IL with her husband, Bill.
Tammy lives in Atlanta, GA and Timothy is in Manhattan, KS.
“After our first daughter was born, I became a stay-at-home mom for 13 or
14 years. After serving as a Girl Scout leader for a number of years I was offered
a job at the local office. I met many wonderful people (adults and girls) during
the next fifteen-and-a-half years at the Girl Scout Council. After leaving the
Girl Scouts, I worked as the Executive Director of CASA (Court Appointed
Special Advocates) in Hays for four years. Our primary function was to help
abused and neglected children who had become wards of the court.
“After Ed passed away, I decided to fulfill a dream of owning a store. In
February of 2003, I (along with a partner) opened Tumbleweed Crossing, a
quilt shop located in downtown Hays.” www.tumbleweedcrossing.com
