OneOC Awards
Robert Davis, senior vice president of U.S. Operations for
Mazda, left, with Eric Morgan, communications director for
the Orange County Register; Jennifer Luis, Human
Resources Director of Tom's Truck Center/Carmenita
Truck Center/Kia Depot; Mark McLoughlin, president of
High School Inc. Foundation; and Dan McQuaid, president
and CEO of OneOC. McLoughlin and Luis represented
their organizations as winners of the 2016 Giving is Living
Award at The Spirit of Volunteerism Award luncheon
Thursday at the Disneyland Hotel.
From hundreds of hours of volunteer service to $3.2 million raised in a 30-hour charitable marathon, generosity in Orange County
took center stage Thursday.
At the OneOC Spirit of Volunteerism Awards luncheon, close to 1,100 people gathered at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim to salute volunteers for their time and talents in service to the community.
And right around the time lunch was served to the honorees, the online iheartOC Giving Day campaign ended with a final tally that
was nearly double the amount raised by the inaugural Giving Day last year. The funds benefit local nonprofits.
This year marked the 40th anniversary of the Spirit of Volunteerism gathering, a way to say a public “thank you” to individual and
team volunteers. As in past years, The Orange County Register was a presenting sponsor, joined by Mazda North American Operations.
More than 43,000 volunteers contributed in excess of 1.6 million hours of service last year, said Rob Reindl, board chairman for
OneOC, the organization that serves as the connective tissue for nonprofits, volunteers and businesses in Orange County.
“That’s a lot of good, with great impact,” Reindl told the audience.
Reindl was talking about people like Holly Havlik of Tustin, who got a kick out of taking photos with fellow employees from E xperian. Havlik welcomed the recognition, but said giving back is something her parents instilled at a young age.
Havlik estimated that she put in about 300 hours of community service last year, both with her company’s volunteer team and o n
her own. One recent project involved distributing food to the needy at the South County Outreach pantry.
“Their gratefulness over a simple sandwich amazed me,” Havlik said.
All the volunteers were spotlighted with their photos on a big screen and their names read out loud. The big honor of the day, the
2016 Giving is Living Award for the most outstanding nonprofit/corporate collaboration, went to High School Inc. and Tom’s
Truck Center/Carmenita Truck Center/Kia Depot. Many of the same people at the luncheon were involved in the iheartOC Giving
Day that began at 6 a.m. Wednesday and ended at noon Thursday. An announcement of the $3.2million raised was met with applause and gasps.
Under the auspices of the Orange County Community Foundation, 418 nonprofits participated in the countywide Giving Day, using
social media, email blasts and special events to reach out to supporters. The Council on Aging-Orange County saw a tenfold increase in iheartOC Giving Day donations this year, said Lisa Wright Jenkins, president and CEO of the organization.
Donors earmarked $8,455, Jenkins said, adding that one supporter pledged an additional $5,000 match for a total that eclipsed the
$1,300 raised last year.
“That’s like, unbelievable,” Jenkins said of the fundraising. “It was fantastic.”

Look at a day when you are supremely satisfied at the end. It’s not a
day when you lounge around doing nothing. It’s when you’ve had
everything to do and you’ve done it.
