Contributed by Casey L. Foedisch y first memory of Joe Zaneski was at a parade meeting in my living room when I was nine years old. He was sitting off by himself in a corner, and when I crept through the room on my way to the kitchen, he ordered a cup of decaf coffee with French vanilla and two sugars from me. He wanted it delivered to him the morning of 4th of July. I distinctly recall writing a note for my mom to put in her minutes. It read, “Decaf, French vanilla, and two sugars for the loud guy in the corner.” Joe had been on the committee for some time. So much time, in fact, that no one could quite remember when he joined. M The most notable thing about Joe was his love of 4th of July. At the event's planning meetings, Joe was always pushing for activities such as the Greased Pole and Downhill Race in between handfuls of M&Ms. Both of these he coordinated and conducted, all with the help of a megaphone, bicycle, and a battered, day-glow hat that read ‘I ™ Riverton’. Everyone knew him and everyone loved him, especially the kids. Joe's sense of humor and dedication to their enjoyment of 4th of July made him a favorite with children. Ever the wise guy, Joe kept the committee meetings light and entertaining. We could always count on him for a laugh, but he was just as dependable when you needed a hand. Joe never chaired any of the larger events that the 4th of July Committee plans, such as the parade and Run for Fun, but he was always there to help. On the riverbank on the morning of the festivities, Joe arrived before everyone, biking up and down the lineup, directing traffic, and attempting to organize the chaos. This is Riverton's first 4th of July without Joe, and his absence will reverberate throughout the event. However, it is his spirit that 6 Photo credits: Bennett Landsman Photos: Downhill Race & Greased Pole Events will be felt the most. It will be in his grandchildren, Maddie and Emma, as they represent him in the parade. It will be in his son, Matt, as he dons Joe's infamous hat. It will be in the Downhill Race and the new safety measures that Joe designed. And, most importantly, it will be in the smiles of children. Last 4th of July, I went to Wawa very early and bought him that coffee after nine years. I brought it to the riverbank for him, thrilled to fulfill my promise and escape the yearly razzing he gave me about it. As it turned out, he wasn't there. His bike had quit on him after all those years, and he wasn't able to get to the riverbank on time. I saw him later at the park just before the Greased Pole and gave him the coffee, and he just laughed. Did he drink it? No way. What a ridiculous, lovable, maddening individual. Somehow, he still managed to give me a hard time, despite the fact that he finally had his coffee, just like he ordered it. Joe Zaneski, the Riverton 4th of July Committee, the people of Riverton, and I thank you. For everything. 7 HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH The Riverton 4th of July Showcase Sponsor! HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Special thanks to our Stars & Stripes Sponsor! 8 And thank you to our Patriot Sponsor! Barclay Group HHHHHHHHHHHHH And thank you to our Liberty Sponsors! Anthony Jewelers Weber Funeral Home HHHHHHHHHHHHH In Memory of Bob Barron: The 4th of July Committee would like to remember and acknowledge Bob Barron, former Riverton resident and Committee member. Bob passed away earlier this year at the age of 60. Bob was a longtime member of the committee from the early 80’s until 1994. Bob, along with Jim McCracken, was responsible for returning the fireworks to the 4th of July celebration in 1984. Bob also started the tradition of the 6AM Wake-Up Call on the morning of the 4th. Bob jokingly said that we needed to add an afternoon event to the festivities that was close to his house – and so began the wildly popular Downhill Race in 1989 that continues today. The town of Riverton and the 4th of July Committee were fortunate to have such a hard-working and enthusiastic member of the committee for many years. Bob will be remembered through his many contributions to our 4th of July celebration. 9 10 11 Megan Hunt, T.C.R.G Cathleen Jordan-Rubin, T.C.R.G In lovIng memory of mIchele Bednarek 1969 - 2006 If you have Been touched By ovarIan cancer, please contact: [email protected] Enjoy the Festivities!
