Foedisch here are nearly 3,000 people in Riverton. Some of those people dedicate a lot of time to their town, some give a little, and some give of their heart and soul. Ruth Yearly, a longtime Riverton resident, is a part of the last category, as she has been for most of her life. T Ruth Yearly was born on September 15, 1926. She lived in Cramer Hill with her father, who owned a building business, and her three older brothers, Earl, Charlie, and Ken. At twenty years old, she married Lester Yearly. Two years later, in 1948, the two moved into a house on Linden Avenue in Riverton. There, Lester joined the Riverton Fire Company. They raised their two children, Bob and Lisa, at that house, and Ruth still lives there today. Since arriving in Riverton, Ruth has been, and remains today, an enthusiastic Rivertonian. She was a Girl Scout leader with Rosemary Laverty, starting a Brownie troop when her daughter was old enough to join. Additionally, Ruth served two terms as the president of the Knights of Columbus, and two terms as the president of the TriBoro Seniors group at Sacred Heart Church. There, she organized a variety of speakers and entertainments for the members of the club, trying to make people's experiences there interesting and worthwhile. She even planned a cruise up the Delaware River on paddleboats to support the Riverton 4th of July. Her greatest contribution has been to the Riverton Fire Company, a cause she is strongly drawn to, as her husband was a firefighter, and her son still serves in Riverton. For years, she was a member of the Ladies' Auxiliary, acting as president for two terms. She helped to run cake sales, dinners, and other fundraisers. Her pet project, though, has been the organization of bus trips to a variety of cities around the country, which she has been doing for at least thirty years. People purchase tickets and visit amazing places, all while supporting the Fire Company, to whom Ruth dedicates the proceeds. She has also traveled the world in a similar way by helping to sell cruise tickets. 6 Ruth and Les Yearly Ruth and family. Nova Scotia trip, 2006. She has been to many countries, including Italy, Ireland, Germany, Iceland, England, Switzerland, and Australia, her favorite being Switzerland. For her 80th birthday, she took her entire family on a cruise to Nova Scotia. This year, as she turns 85, she will again travel with them, this time on a cruise along California's coast. Ruth Yearly is a dedicated woman. She has devoted years of her time to Riverton and its people. Through her service, she has managed to raise money for important causes as well as allow people to really enjoy themselves. When the interview with Ruth Yearly was completed and she was seeing us to the door, she said something that embodies the very essence of why she gives so much of herself to help make Riverton the wonderful place it is: "I love Riverton, and I can't imagine living anywhere else." In that sentence is the root of all of her dedication and service. Ruth Yearly loves Riverton, and she shares that spirit with everyone else. 7 HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH The Riverton 4th of July Showcase Sponsor!
