Hello, from the desk of the President
I should give you a report from Costa Rica! It was a great trip; lots of good food, many laughs with my family,
and new adventures that now have turned to memories.
It is summer all year in Costa Rica so they do not start thinking about changing the layers of clothes that we
will start to do now. Actually, my grandson is praying for snow in the mountains, as his snowboard is getting
rusty!
With the change of weather come the thoughts of our holidays that are soon to be upon us. Each of us has their
own traditions with their families and friends; I do not think the holidays would be the same without some of
those traditions. Turkey has always been our stand-by for Thanksgiving; but to tell you the truth I never liked it.
But, I grew up with a turkey dinner on Thanksgiving and, lo and behold, there will be a turkey dinner for my
grandchildren and the rest of the family each year. Just as I have warm, fuzzy memories of my grandparents I,
too, am determined to instill those same memories with my grandchildren!! I will tell you something, if I asked
my grandkids what they would rather have they would say sushi every time— so much for memories!
We begin to think about those things that we are so thankful for at this time of year. I am sure my thoughts are
much the same as yours. I am thankful for my family and my friends. I am just thankful for my life! I am thankful when the mitered corners look “ok” and I am thrilled when I actually cut and sew straight! There are so
many things to be thankful for and each of us has our own list.
I am also very thankful for each and everyone in BCQG, and that means YOU!
Marsha

HOLIDAY EXTRAVAGANZA!
RAFFLE BASKETS AND
LIVE AUCTION
December 13 at
Marco Forster Middle School
We are busy collecting one-yard, or greater, cuts of 100% cotton fabric for the upcoming Holiday Extravaganza. Fabrics will be bundled into lovely collections and then raffled off to add to your stash! Donations will be accepted at the November meeting, look for the table near the stage. We are asking all friendship
groups to consider donating a completed basket. It can be made of quilting or non-quilting items. All baskets
need to be to Julie Greenspan by December 6. There will be a sign up sheet in November for help with set up,
raffle tickets sales and monitoring of tables. Join in the fun!
Please consider donating a quilt, garment, bag or doll for the Live Holiday Auction. All items to be auctioned will be displayed at Leah’s, Mission Viejo, November 25 to December 12. We’ve already had 4 beautiful quilts donated but are looking for more! Consider finishing a UFO to support the guild. Please contact
Nancy Ota regarding your donations.
The Holiday Extravaganza will be an exciting evening filled with bargain rummage, wonderful raffle items
and an amazing live auction. Start thinking about an hors d’oeuvres, or sweet treat you’d like to bring to share.

THANK YOU BEACH CITIES
I can not tell you all how amazing the quilt that you
gave me is. When I got home, I just couldn’t stop
looking at every block, every detail. Needless to say, it
was WAY PAST my bedtime (12:35 a.m.) before I
closed my eyes in pieceful slumber. I have worked on
many of the President’s Quilts over the last 15 years.
It has always filled me with pride to see what this
amazing guild turned out each year and presented to
the President. I was always thrilled that I could be a
small part of the process each year.
The time and talent that went into this gift is without equal to anything I’ve known. I was very much humbled
as the quilt was revealed. The beauty of it just took my breath away. I could hardly believe that such magnificence now belonged to me. It will be placed on a special wall in my home where it will give joy to not only me
and my wonderful family, but to anyone that comes into my home.
The experience of being the 15th president of BCQG was nothing short of astounding. It is an experience that I
will treasure always. And I could not have done it without the many hours that my board members put in each
month. My board was certainly the greatest!!! Thank you all again.
Thank you, Beach Cities Quilters, one and all for this treasured gift. It has brought me a lot of joy already and I
know it will for the rest of my life. I was truly blessed by all of you! Thank you.

PRESIDENT’S QUILT
Bettie’s quilt is truly a work of art; it took the combined efforts of hundreds of quilters to make this
masterpiece. Thank You to all those members who
contributed blocks to Bettie’s quilt. The final results
are amazing. Bettie chose a great theme in “My Garden from Sunrise to Sunset”. This allowed everyone
to let their imagination and sewing skills go wild in
creating the wonderful blooms.
For years I have collected inspirational photographs of gardens from magazines. Even though I may never be
able to achieve the same results in my yard, these pictures drive me to improve. One of these photographs from
several years back was adapted for the center panel of the quilt. Then I enlisted the help of some wonderful
appliqué quilters: Cindy Croucher, Polly Hada, Chris Huben, Candy Martin, Becky McDaniel, Pat Pardoen
and Rachael Severance. These ladies really stepped up to the plate to create the wonderful appliqué. Lyndy
Dye designed the BCQG logo as she has done for all the president’s quilts. This logo was particularly daunting
due to the size. Assembly of the blocks was done at Leah’s by Janet Cowart, Linda Effertz, Sue Richardson,
Marianne Cunningham and Elaine Pappas-Puckett. Thank you to Leah’s for giving us the use of the classroom.
After all the assembly and appliqué, we moved on to the quilting bees. Thank you to all those members who
added their stitches to the quilt, especially those who had never quilted before. We know how much courage it
takes to attempt those first stitches. Some of the best social quilting happens at these bees. Elaine PappasPuckett very kindly took the responsibility of beekeeper; her job was to deliver the quilt and supplies to each
of the quilting bees. She also hosted a quilting bee. Thank you to the women who opened their homes for the
quilting bees: Nasfi Martin, Julia Montoya, Nancy Gilman, and Maggie Bell.
For the back art, I painted and stamped the butterflies and Jhone Hardesty over painted the signature butterflies, really adding to the arty effect. Then Jennifer Morgan, Linda Ambrosini, and Barbara Green appliquéd
the signature butterflies down.
Maggie Ezell did the binding and sleeves. What a relief when that was completed. But there was still one more
step. Becky Reed embellished the quilt with embroidery. Finally, I had three days to just enjoy the final product. Bettie will have years to study all the wonderful blocks and memories of her year as President. Thank You
Bettie.
Thanks again;
Sheryl Smith-Bailey

HOSPITALITY
Thank you to The Family Jewels (Margie Bushaw,
Juin Foresman, Dorothy Tarr, Nancy Bloyer, Kathy
Chevalier, Candy Crain, Pat Gates & Jean Impey) for
hosting the October table. The table was decorated so
festive.
Around the Block friendship group will be hosting
the table in November and Terry Pyle, Chris Biro
and Sandy Jones will host in December.
Hosting is not hard, though it does require your
group to be there a little early to set up and to help
dismantle and clean up. The guild provides all the
paper items, crystal light, coffee and tea. The guild
members bring the goodies for the table. Did you
know you get 3 pink tickets for hosting? So grab a
few friends and have some fun while greeting your
fellow members. It’s fun and easy.
Please remember to bring your goodies in disposable
containers. If you bring them in something that you
would like back, remember to check the back table at
the end of the meeting, because that’s where those
things are left.
Sharon Gilmore and Eileen Campbell
MONTHLY MINI
October’s Monthly Mini was a darling Mr. Pumpkin
sitting on a pumpkin cart, made by the very talented
doll maker Judi Hasselkus.
Judy is a Charter Member of Beach Cities and a
member of the Flying Geese Quilt Guild. She has
been quilting for over 35 years and enjoys all types
of quilting. She is passionate about doll making and
for the past few years has devoted her energy to
making one-of-a-kind dolls. Each year she designs a
Halloween doll, and we thank her for her contribution.
Kathy Stolhand was the lucky winner!

SUNSHINE AND SHADOWS
Welcoming is
Sunshine and Shadows!
Did all of you know that the welcoming committee
members are also those responsible for the “Sunshine
and Shadows” portion of our guild? Please let us
know of happy and/or sad events so that we can give
the person a call, send a card, and obtain permission
from them to publish that information.
Many of us on this committee aren’t “big” names, so
we are asking for your help in making sure we stay
current. So if you know someone who is having an
event, please let the welcoming people know so that
we can share it with the entire guild for their loving
and support! Thank you!
Sympathy cards were sent this month to Bettie
Blauser and Sue Richardson. Both of these ladies lost
their mothers.
It was MARVELOUS to see Helen Brassaw’s new
hair do at Guild in October and wonderful to see her
up and about with her great smile!
Colleen Baker and her husband were in a bad car accident last month. Both are glad to be alive, and are
finding out how hard it is to have everything hurt.
Let's all keep them in our thoughts!
Also, we host the Newcomers Tea, and that date has
yet to be announced. Further information will be
made public after the New Year.

BLOCK PARTY
Thanks to everyone who participated in the October
Block Party. Thirteen blocks were turned in. We had
two winners, one of six blocks and one of five
blocks.
The winners were:
Helen Brassaw and Sandy Jones
Congratulations!
Chris Biro was the winner of the
end of the year set of 12 blocks
Block Party Raffle!
Also at the meeting we presented Bettie Blauser
Past President, with a set of 12 blocks.
November is the start of the new Block Party year
(2007-2008) and the theme for this year’s Block
Party are blocks/sewing trivia that in some manner
represent the month we are celebrating. For example:
November 19 is National Button Day
this month’s block is Bachelor Button
March 17 is St. Patrick’s Day
the block will be the Irish Chain Block
We are hoping that many of you will participate in
this year’s Block Party fun.
The Block Party 2006-2007 Pattern Books will be on
sale at the November meeting for $5 dollars each.
Please come visit us at the Block Party Table during
the regular meeting.

NICKEL CLUB for NOVEMBER
Nickel Club is continuing this month with Kaffe Fassett fabrics and Christmas fabrics. You’ll turn in your fabric squares
and pick them up the following month. You may exchange one type of fabric, both types, or none. Here are the guidelines:
• From 2/3 of a yard of prewashed and ironed fabric, cut 32 5” squares. Keep two for yourself and put the rest in 15
sets of two. Off-set these pairs as you stack them.
• Place your 15 sets in a gallon size baggie that has your name, phone number, and type of exchange on it.
• You can do two sets of exchanges for each type of fabric. You must use two different fabrics. For example if you
are exchanging two sets of batiks, you MUST use two different batik fabrics. Label your gallon baggies Batik #1
and Batik #2
• All fabrics must be pre-washed and must be high quality quilting cottons.
• All selvedges need to be cut off.
Please follow the guidelines for type of fabric (if it is an exchange of 1800s, don’t use Thimbleberries)
If you don’t follow the guidelines your squares will be returned to you and NOT exchanged.
Our exchanges for the next few months are
