Have a fun Oyster Festival!
Welcome to the 57th Annual
Urbanna Oyster Festival
When leaves change color and
the air is crisp, it’s time for the
Urbanna Oyster Festival—Virginia’s official Oyster Festival!
This year’s 57th edition of the
area’s premier fall festival takes
center stage Friday and Saturday,
November 7-8. There’ll be food,
bands, historical boats, crafts,
antique cars, crowning of the festival queen, two parades, and the
official Virginia Oyster Shucking
Contest.
The streets of Urbanna will be
lined with food vendors vying for
the palates of thousands of visitors.
Oysters, prepared with flair, will be
everywhere—raw on the half shell,
fried, warmed in stews and sandwiched as fritters. But, save room
for dessert. How about a funnel
cake, a festival favorite?
In addition, visitors can enjoy
crab soup, crab bisque, seafood
chowder, clams, crab cakes,
shrimp, fish, corn dogs, sausages,
hamburgers, hot dogs, turkey legs,
roast beef, kettle corn, roasted
nuts, ice cream, cotton candy, snow
cones, candy apples and many
other goodies.
As always, the Middlesex
Lions Club will serve its sizzling
oyster fritters, the Kiwanis Club
of Middlesex will offer its raw and
roasted oysters, the Woman’s Club
will dip up its famous crab bisque,
and Christ Church will once again
tempt you with its delicious clam
chowder, and fried clams and oysters.
After you’ve eaten your fill, take
a rest at one of the stages for some
continuous live music.
The award-winning Lancaster High School band is a parade favorite.
Then stroll down to the Urbanna
Town Marina at Upton’s Point to
see and tour restored oyster buyboats and the tall ship “Godspeed”
from Jamestown.
At the waterfront visitors can try
the hands-on oystering exhibits,
touch tank ecosystem and enjoy the
music and displays.
Walking will help work up an
appetite. So, mosey back up town
to Festival Village, get a snack. If
it’s Friday, get a seat for the crowning of the Urbanna Oyster Festival
Queen and Little Miss Spat at 4
p.m. inside the Urbanna Firehouse.
Stick around on Friday for the
Firemen’s Parade at 7 p.m. It’s just
the first of two parades. The firemen’s dance featuring the reggae
sounds of “Stuck on a Name” follows Friday’s parade at 8 p.m.
Again this year, antique and classic vehicles will be on display at
the corner of Waverly and Virginia
streets, across from the Urbanna
Firehouse, on Saturday, November
8, starting at 9 a.m.
On Saturday, the Virginia Oyster
Shucking Championship is at 11
a.m. behind the firehouse. If you’ve
ever tried to open an oyster, you’ll
marvel at the speed and dexterity as
professional contestants shuck two
dozen oysters in less than 3 minutes. You’ll also enjoy watching the
amateurs wrestle with opening the
tight bivalves.
On Saturday at 2 p.m., the popular Urbanna Oyster Festival Parade
with dozens of entries winds its
way through town on a route that
bypasses the main part of Virginia
Street.
Community Row, featuring local
vendors, will be on one side of
Virginia Street on the way to the
waterfront.
On Saturday, 30-passenger trams
will shuttle visitors across the
bridge to and from parking areas
on the Rosegill (east) side of town.
A variety of entertainment has
been booked for the Urbanna
Oyster Festival’s three stages and

A water taxi will operate from
the Urbanna Town Marina on both
Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m.-7
p.m. It will transport visitors to
and from their boats anchored in
the harbor. Tours of the creek by
boat also will be available.
The Oyster Festival waterfront
at the Urbanna Town Marina will
showcase the area’s varied history
and emphasize the conservation
and restoration of the Chesapeake
Bay.
Since its days as a crucial colonial port, Urbanna’s waterfront
has always been an essential part
of the town’s life. In its recent
past, its docks were filled with
Chesapeake Bay buyboats and
deadrise workboats as watermen
bought and sold oysters and crabs
that they had harvested.
During Oyster Festival, history
comes alive at the waterfront. Festival-goers are welcome to climb
aboard the spectacular sailing
vessel “Godspeed,” a re-creation
of the 1607 ship that brought the
first permanent English settlers to
Virginia.
Also, step into the pilot house

Oyster shucking contests
open to pros and amateurs
The Virginia Oyster Shucking
Contest, sponsored by Revere Gas
and Rappahannock River Oysters,
will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday,
November 8, behind the firehouse.
Since Urbanna is the home of
Virginia’s “official” Oyster Festival, it is only appropriate that
some of the best oyster shuckers
in the world practice their trade
near the town. The top professional shucker in the contest wins
$300. The first place prize in each
of the men’s and women’s divisions is $100; second, $50; and
third, $25.
The winner is declared state
champion and advances to compete in the National Oyster Shucking Contest in St. Mary’s, Md., in
October of 2015.
Expected to compete are
former national women’s oyster
shucking champions Clementine
Macon and Deborah Pratt. Pratt,
the current state champion, is a
six-time national oyster shucking
champion.
There will be an amateur shuck-

As the Oyster Festival evolved
over the years, so has the selection process for the Queen and
Little Miss Spat. It originally was
a type of beauty pageant, but is
now a scholarship competition for
the Queen contestants. The judging is based on a community service project, grade point average,
judges’ interview, written response
to a random question, and overall
participation. The judges are not
residents of Middlesex County.
Each Queen contestant selects a
girl in the first grade to compete as
her Little Miss Spat (a “spat” is a
baby oyster). The Little Miss Spat
finalists are selected independently
of the Queen and are judged based
on their participation at an ice
cream social, a judges’ interview,
a judged tea party and overall participation.
The Queen competition starts
early in the summer and extends
until the crowning takes place on
Friday of the Oyster Festival.
The crowning of the Queen at
the upcoming 57th Urbanna Oyster
Festival will take place on Friday,
November 7, at 4 p.m. inside the
Urbanna Firehouse on Virginia
Street. The Urbanna Oyster Festival
Queen Scholarship Competition
awards scholarships to the top three
Queen finishers. They are competing for $13,000 in scholarships.
This year, the seven queen contestants and eight Little Miss Spat
contestants raised over $14,500 and
contributed more than 350 hours of
community service.
This year’s Queen contestants
and their Little Miss Spat contestants include: Angel Abbott and
Katelin Reiner, Amberly Blakley
and Summer Clark, Tiffany Carter
and Makayla Moore, Makenzie
Fletcher and Lorelei Cooke, Katarina Kruse and Ava Grace Harris,
Emily Sheppard and Kayleigh Pullman, Ashley Walton and Kallie

Special French fries
by Errol “Butch” Egolf
Deltaville
Several years ago my daughter
April and I went to the Urbanna
Oyster Festival. My wife was a
craft vendor there, and we were
going there to check on her. After
visiting, we checked out other vendors and decided to leave.
On our way out, April informed
me she was getting hungry and
asked if we could get something to
eat. I told her yes, so we stopped at
a local food vendor and I ordered
a bowl of clam strips. At the time
April was about 4 or 5 years old
and a very picky eater, so I knew if
I told her I was ordering clam strips
she would not try them. So, when
she asked what I ordered to eat, I
told her “French fries.”
We shared the bowl of clam
strips and she commented that they
were very good and could we get
another bowl of French fries. I said
yes and after we shared the second
bowl of clam strips I told April
that what she was eating were not
French fries.
She had a blank stare on her face
and made a big gulp and asked what
they were. I told her “clam strips.”
She thought for a moment and
said they were not clam strips but
they were “special French fries, and
also added athat she liked the special French fries.
This happened about 22 years
ago and to this day she still eats special French fries (aka clam strips).

An old tradition—an antique
auto
show—returns
this
year. Classic vehicles will be on
display at the corner of Waverly
and Virginia streets across from
the Urbanna Firehouse on Saturday, November 8, starting at 9 a.m.
This will be a “people’s choice”
voting event. The winners in each
class will be featured in Saturday’s
Oyster Festival Parade.
The first Urbanna Oyster Festival featured an antique auto
show, and some of those participants from the Richmond Region
Antique Automobile Club of
America (AACA) will be on hand
for this year’s show. “The Oyster
Festival Foundation hopes to
gather many of these wonderful
owners and their rides in a special
section of the parade to pay tribute
to them,” said a festival spokesperson.
The antique auto show is sponsored by Hudgins Holiday Chevrolet-Cadillac of Williamsburg.

this

“Merroir” that is located at Locklies Marina in Topping.
RRO will host a boutique oyster
tasting at the wine tasting area
next to the post office from 11
a.m.-5 p.m. on both days of the
festival. The taste of these aquaculture-raised specialty oysters
vary from heavy salt, sweet, and
mildly salty, depending on where
they were raised. Their names give
a clue to their flavor—Olde Salts,
Rappahannock River Oysters, and
Stingray Oysters.
Chefs will prepare the RRO
oysters, pairing them with local

The only “beer garden” will be

Several Urbanna restaurants

Longtime volunteer is festival grand marshal
Urbanna resident Eric Faudree
is the grand marshal of the 57th
Annual Urbanna Oyster Festival set
for Friday and Saturday, November
7-8.
Faudree’s first experience of
working with the festival was in
1968 when festival volunteer Joyce
Wilson asked him to be an usher at
the annual Oyster Festival Queen
Contest. Other ushers were Joyce’s
son Mike Wilson, Lewis Hall and
Billy Pratt Miller.
“I remember that Pat Thrift
(Wake) won the contest that year,”
said Faudree. “The contest was
held in the old Urbanna movie theatre (Rappanna Theatre). It was my
start of being involved in the festival for many years.”
Faudree
graduated
from
Middlesex High School in 1972
and has worked at the Newport
News Shipyard for over 35 years.
He is married to Elizabeth (Burch)
Faudree and they raised two chil-
dren, Travis and Courtney, in
Urbanna.
Elizabeth’s father Lewis and
his twin brother, Stanley Burch,
were honored in 1997 as captains
of the Urbanna Oyster Festival.
Lewis and Stanley worked in the
Rappahannock River oyster fishery
for many years.
Faudree and Bob Henkel were
co-chairs of the festival during its
50-year celebration in 2007. “I’ve
been chairman of several committees with the festival,” said Faudree.
Faudree has been chair of the
entertainment, parade, and concessions committees.
He also has been emcee of the
Oyster Festival Queen and Little
Miss Spat contests and the shucking contest. Laughingly, Faudree
said, “I think I’ve emceed more
Urbanna Oyster Festival events
than Harvey Hudson.”
Hudson was a Richmond broadcasting celebrity who faithfully
came to Urbanna to emcee festival events for many years. In
1998, Hudson was honored by the
Urbanna Oyster Festival Foundation when he was named grand
marshal.
“It’s been a great pleasure for
me to work as a volunteer for the
Urbanna Oyster Festival,” said
Faudree. “It’s something I’m proud
of. I wanted to set an example for
my children so they understood the
importance of community service.
“I’ve been particularly proud of
the direction the Queen Contest
has taken with all the scholarship
money that has been raised and the
direction of encouraging community service projects,” he said.
“We all know the importance

Longtime Urbanna Oyster Festival Foundation board member
Charles Bristow said, “Eric has
been a mainstay in the festival
organization for a long time and we
are honoring him for that dedication, but we also are honoring him
for being a giving and wonderful
person. He exemplifies everything
we want in a grand marshal.”
As grand marshal, Faudree will
ride in the festival’s Fireman’s
Parade at 7 p.m. on Friday, November 7, and in the general parade at 2
p.m. on Saturday, November 8.
At the Old Tobacco Warehouse
The Old Tobacco Warehouse
(Scottish Factor Store/Visitor’s
Center and Museum) on Virginia
Street, between Cross Street and the
waterfront and just up the hill from
Urbanna Creek, will be open both
days of the festival. A new museum
exhibit, “Oyster is King,” traces the
influence of the oyster industry on
the area.
Also on display is a rare 1755
John Mitchell Map, one of the earliest maps of the original 13 colonies.
It was used to negotiate the treaties
between Britain and the United
States that ended the Revolutionary
War. The map was recently restored
and it fills an entire wall.
Robert Keyes, a multi-facet solo
finger-style guitarist, will perform
on the porch of the Old Tobacco
Warehouse on Friday and Saturday.
The one-hour-long sets start at 10
a.m., noon and 2 p.m. on Friday,
and at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
on Saturday.

Oyster visionary is Festival Captain
Longtime oyster guru Robert
“Captain Bob” Jensen of Topping
has been named the Captain of the
57th annual Urbanna Oyster Festival and will be honored at this
year’s festivities on November 7-8.
“Sometimes it takes willingness to swim upstream to make a
real difference in this world, and
that’s how I see Captain Bob,” said
Urbanna Oyster Festival Foundation board member Walt Hurley.
Jensen came to Middlesex
County in 1982 when he purchased a home on Locklies Creek
in Topping. He had finished a
28-year career in the Navy in 1974
and worked another 8 years as an
electrical engineer when he was
traveling through Middlesex from
the Norfolk area.
“When
I
got
to
the
Rappahannock River bridge, the
day was clear, clouds high in the
sky, and I could see all the way to
the Chesapeake Bay,” said Jensen.
“When I looked out over the
Rappahannock, I knew this was
where I wanted to spend the rest
of my life.”
Instead of continuing on his
way, he stopped and inquired as to
where a real estate agent might be,
and within a couple of days had
purchased a waterfront home on
Robert “Captain Bob” Jensen
Locklies Creek.
Over the next 30 years, Jensen
was an advocate for the preservation of the heritage, culture and
environment of the Chesapeake
Bay region. He was founder of
Captain Bob’s School of the Bay
and the Rappahannock Preservation Society. Jensen took more
than 12,000 school children on
Rappahannock River field trips
aboard his deadrise workboat to
give them an up-close look at environmental issues.
He was a constant advocate of
cleaning up the Cheaspeake Bay.
Although his notions were often
ignored by scientists and governmental agencies, his message
could not be ignored. Always,
he advocated bringing back the
native oyster as the main means of
improving the quality of water in
the Chesapeake Bay.
Perhaps it was his Navy career
that made him so tough and resistant to criticism and sarcastic
remarks. Whatever verbal punches
were thrown his way at VMRC
meetings or boards of supervisor
meetings, Jensen always seemed
unfazed and continued to work
toward his objective.
In 1988, during some of the
darkest days for Rappahannock
River oysters, Jensen handed out
armbands at the Urbanna Oyster
Festival. The back of the band
was black—mourning the decline
of oysters—and the opposite side
was white, signifying hope that
bay oysters would return in the
future.
At last year’s Oyster Festival,
the Oyster Company of Virginia
handed out white armbands that
read, “Oysters For Life” and “Save
the Bay” as an acknowledgement
of Jensen’s vision and quest to

Captain Bob . . .
bring back the native bay oyster.
Over the years, Jensen was an
advocate of creating sanctuary
reefs to protect oysters and promote natural spawning. Several
years ago, when Virginia Department of Highway (VDOT) officials
were searching for an inexpensive
way of disposing of old concrete
from the Rappahannock River
bridge, Jensen introduced the idea
of using the old, discarded concrete as “cultch” for growing oysters and creating oyster reefs with
12-by-12 foot slabs of concrete.
Cultch is a mass of stones, concrete, broken shells and grit on
which an oyster bed is formed.
Jensen presented the idea to
state agencies, which were skeptical of the idea. He argued that
using concrete oyster reefs was
a way to not only save VDOT
removal funds, but also was a form
of cultch that would not allow the
poaching of oysters from public
reefs. Jensen’s vision of creating
oyster sanctuaries as a way to bring
back the oyster population has in
part led to efforts by the State of
Virginia to create three reefs, and
to also set aside sanctuaries where
oysters cannot be harvested.
Jensen predicted if enough
Urbanna
(Continued from page 20)
reefs were developed there would
be more natural strikes of oysters
on public and private beds to help
breathe life into the commercial
oyster fishery.
The oyster industry was at an
all-time low in 1988 when only
21,000 commercial bushels were
harvested in Virginia waters. In
2013, 25 years later, over 500,000
bushels were harvested commercially.
Whether Jensen’s reefs and
similar initiatives are the reason
for the oyster upswing is a subject still debated by scientists and
watermen. “The proof is in the
pudding,” said Jensen. “I know
the reefs are playing a role in the
comeback of the oyster.”
After the success of his concrete
reefs, Jensen came up with the
idea of the harvestable oyster reef
module (HORM), which is a platform for growing oysters on the
bottom of the river. He currently is
working with the Oyster Company
of Virginia and ReefTek Inc. in
an effort to launch a “living reef ”
program for public participation.
Jensen will ride in the festival’s
Fireman’s Parade on Friday evening, November 7, and the main
parade on Saturday, November 8.

Education Day at the waterfront
Knowledge is power and the mission of the Urbanna Oyster Festival
Marine Science Legacy Program is
to increase student and community
knowledge of the local watershed
with the end that we might act to
preserve it. The program does so
with the help of local private, government and non-profit organizations who bring diverse experience
and knowledge.
Educational activities for local
students kicked off on October 6
with two weeks of Chesapeake Bay
Foundation boat trips out of Urbanna
Town Marina. Local fourth grade,
seventh grade and high school students boarded the “Bea Hayman
Clark” for half and full day trips to
experience and investigate Urbanna
Creek and the Rappahannock River
as watermen and scientists might.
Students participated in activities
such as dredging for oysters, netting and identifying finfish, pulling
and setting crab pots, and performing water quality tests. Students also
learned about sources of pollution in
the river and what they, as citizens,
can do to improve water quality.
On Thursday, November 6, local
students will converge on Urbanna
Town Marina for Urbanna Oyster
Festival Education Day activities.
There they will participate in handson activities to learn about the past,
present and future of rivers and the
Chesapeake Bay from local exhibitors. The featured exhibitors this
year include the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation’s “Godspeed” and
the “Northern Neck Chantey Singers.”
Oyster Festival Education Day
and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation boat trips are supported by a
license plate grant from the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Fund. In
addition, the following sponsors
support Education Day activities
and educational exhibits throughout
the Oyster Festival weekend: The
Oyster Company of Virginia, Something Different, Shellfish Growers of
Virginia, Christchurch School and
Adirondack Guide Boats.
Waterfront exhibits are open to
the public on Friday and Saturday,
November 7-8, of Oyster Festival
weekend. There will also be music
and local seafood at the marina.
Bring your appetite and your curiosity and you will be well fed.
