(Photo by Tom Chillemi) MHS eyes strong JV soccer season by Tom Chillemi The Middlesex High junior varsity soccer team has eight players returning from last year’s 9-7 team in addition to nine new players. “There is a lot of enthusiasm and talent in this group,” said MHS coach Scott Rae. “We are fortunate to have our goalie returning and most of our starting offense. Some of our new players have obvious ability and work well on the field as a team.” Returning JV Charger players include sweeper James Abbott, halfback Robert Brown, halfback Clayton Colley, right halfback Mark Hall, goalie David Norman, sweeper/center halfback Jarrod Palmer, left halfback/left forward Ricky Verbeeck and right forward Garrett Walton. New players include Lauren Beebe, Eddie Grady, Devon Miller, Ian Perkins, Sergey Fomin, Commercial - Residential Licensed & Insured Vest Marine Construction (804) 758-1322 Devon Jackson, Sierra Jordan, Joseph Ledford and Parker Ward. Rae said the team has been practicing moving the ball accurately across the field and deliberately placing the ball to a player in position. “Some of our returning players have shown dramatic improvement in their shots and ball-handling skills,” he said. The JV Chargers are also working on their defense. “The fullbacks are the essential last line of defense for keeping the pressure off the goalie and the ball out of the goal,” said Rae. “These kids are hungry for taking some shots on goal and continuing the progress made during the last season.” Middlesex scrimmaged Northumberland to a scoreless tie on March 10. “It was a strong game,” said Rae. “We were without five players. I’m optimistic about the season.” James Abbott saved a goal when a shot rolled past the goalie, who had moved ahead on defense. “His quickness stopped the ball before it got to the line,” said Rae. Regular season play for JV and varsity begins Thursday, March 23, when Northumberland visits MHS. The JV team plays at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity match is at 7 p.m. Middlesex is at Franklin on Friday, March 24, with matches at 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Middlesex hosts Rappahannock on Monday, March 27. Matches are at 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. “We really encourage friends and family to support Charger soccer,” said Rae. “I would also like to acknowledge the support of the Middlesex Sports Complex and their cooperation with the use of their facilities for daily practice.” [email protected] Custom Piers • Vinyl and Wood Bulkheads • Boat Lifts • Salvage • Demolition Brian Vest Cell Phone: (804) 815-0655 WWW.VESTMARINE.COM L earn to Fl y Hummel Aviation Topping, VA 804-758-9500 With eight regulars having graduated from last year’s Region A semifinal team, Middlesex High varsity baseball coach Timmy Blake faces a mammoth challenge in 2006. Blake’s teams have made the regional playoffs for five straight years, but will be greatly challenged to keep the streak going. This year’s Tidewater District will be strong with Region A champion King William returning a powerful squad, and both Mathews and West Point much improved. “Our lineup was pretty much set in stone last year, but that’s obviously not the case this year,” said Blake. “Early in the season we are going to move players around a lot to see what we’ve got.” MHS (17-7 a year ago) returns only five lettermen led by AllTidewater District and All-Region A shortstop Travis Crump. Only a junior, the left-handed hitting Crump batted .476 in 2005 with 4 home runs, 8 doubles and 36 runs. He also compiled a 4-1 pitching record and will be counted on to lead the MHS staff this spring. “Hopefully Travis will pick up where he left off last year,” said Blake. “We are going to count on him a lot, especially to drive in runs.” Crump led off last year, but look for him to hit third or fourth in the MHS lineup this season. Junior outfielder Drew Hooper started numerous games last year and batted .310. “Drew’s swinging the bat well and has a strong arm. He’ll probably also see some action on the mound,” said Blake. Senior Shain Simmons (.231 batting average) saw action as the MHS designated hitter and at third base last year. “We’re counting on Shain to step up to the plate this year,” said Blake. “He also wants to pitch and that’s what we need—pitching.” Senior Allen Hunt was the back-up to All-State catcher Ryan Norris last year and he will get his chance to start this spring. “Allen really wants to be behind the plate and is happy to get the chance,” said Blake. “He is pretty sound defensively.” Junior Parker Bryant played on the junior varsity until playoff time last year when he joined the varsity and really helped the Charger pitching staff in the district and regional tournaments. The bad news is Bryant has been sick, and Blake is still waiting to see how he looks on the mound this year. Bryant will also play some in the outfield. Up from the JVs are junior outfielder/pitcher Michael Ott, junior second baseman Garnett Carson, sophomore first baseman/pitcher Matt Durrette, sophomore outfielder/pitcher David Belcher, sophomore outfielder Terrance MHS loses opener The Middlesex High varsity baseball team lost its regular season opener Tuesday, 12-2 at Rappahannock. The Chargers scored their two runs in the fourth inning when Parker Bryant reached on a walk, Garnett Carson reached base on an error, and Jake Fletcher then hit a hard grounder that resulted in an overthrow to first base, scoring both Bryant and Carson. At that point, RHS led 5-2. The score was still 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth with two outs when the Indians exploded for seven runs. “It happened so quick, we really couldn’t do much to stop it,” said MHS coach Tim Blake. Rapphannock scored 5 unearned runs in that inning, and the Indians earned only 5 of its 12 runs in the game. Travis Crump was the top pitcher for the Chargers, giving up two earned runs in three innings on the mound. the baseball as a hitter and has some power. “We’re trying to create a pitching staff,” said Blake. “We lost two pitchers (Daniel Rollins and Will Bristow) who accounted for 13 of our 17 wins last year. We also lost five .300 or better hitters who had 15 home runs between them.” Blake is assisted by Greg Harrow and JV coaches Brad and Jonathan Norris. The Chargers, last year’s Tidewater District runners-up, opened their season with a 12-2 loss on Tuesday at Rappahannock. After a hard fought game in which the Waves were defeated by the first place team Chesapeake Academy in the semifinals, Ware faced second place Dahlgren School in its next game. The Waves had already squared off against the Tigers earlier in the season, losing both times. However, the result this time would not be the same. The Ware boys bounced back with an enthusiastic and energetic effort to play one of their best games of the season and the outcome was a 25-21 victory. The win gave the Waves a third place finish in the tournament and the eighthgraders a nice sendoff in their last game. Ware was led by Scott Holthaus who registered a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds along with 3 blocks. Andrew Byrd added 6 points while Antony Markantonatos and Vaughan Crittenden played great defense and controlled the boards with their rebounds. Kyle Byrd who battled foul trouble played an inspirational day of basketball leading the way defensively and running the Waves offense. Byrd hit three 3pointers in the first game to lead the way with 11 points. Shaquille Townsend and Ian Runnells provided Ware with quality minutes, coming up with several key rebounds and defensive stops. Curtis Hughes stepped in and contributed with some scoring and defensive pressure. “The boys played hard and improved throughout the season in many areas and I’m excited for the way they ended their season,” said Coach Morgan. In January the focus of the discussion was on town incorporation as a possible alternative initiating a water and/or sewer initiative. There were advantages and disadvantages to this approach. The next step in exploring alternatives is to see what the county might be able to do to assist. Two county supervisors, Fred Crittenden and Kenneth W. Williams, both of Pinetop District, and county administrator Charles Culley, plan to attend the March 16 meeting. A representative from Aqua Virginia will also be present. A DCA spokesperson said many feel this is a situation that will only get worse and, sooner or later, action will be required. The DCA board has attempted to make clear it is looking at alternatives and trying to be proactive rather than waiting until the Deltaville community is forced into action. This meeting will be a continuation of the education process. A short business meeting will begin promptly at 7 p.m. followed by the forum on water/sewer options at 7:30 p.m. The public is encouraged to attend. ~~~~2 Locations~~~~ BAY RIVER OFFICE Covering the Northern Neck And Middle Peninsula Responsive~~Knowledgeable~~Reliable NE W WHITE STONE DELTAVILLE Chesapeake Drive Gen.
