(Photo by Tom Hardin) Middlesex cagers to host Essex Monday Fall to NHS in opener by Tom Chillemi The Middlesex High boys varsity basketball team has only two returning players. That’s the bad news. The good news is that they are standouts Malcolm Ward and Michael Bess. As co-captains, Ward and Bess will lead the 2008-09 Chargers, who opened with a 59-44 loss at Northumberland Tuesday night. “Both have taken leadership positions seriously and gotten us off to a good start at practice,” said MHS head coach Neil Bailey, who begins his fourth year guiding the Chargers’ basketball program. Ward, a 6-foot senior, is one of the leading returning scorers in Region A. He averaged 17.1 points per game last season. “We’re going to count on Malcolm for a lot of different things, including scoring and defending the opponents’ better players,” said Bailey. Bess, a junior, has started at point guard since his freshman year. He averaged 12.8 points per game last season and is a tenacious floor player. “Michael is a good outside shooter and he runs the offense. He’ll be counted on to provide leader- ship and scoring,” said Bailey. The Chargers lost nine seniors to graduation. Last season they finished in third place in the Tidewater District behind King William and Colonial Beach, which tied for first place. Last year’s team (6-4, 13-13) was knocked out of the Region A Division 2 Tournament in the second round by eventual state runner-up King William, which made it to state semifinals. Middlesex defeated King William the first time the two teams played last season, but lost to the Cavs in the district and regional tournaments. Four new seniors The Chargers will be aided by four senior players who chose not to play their junior year. “Their presence should help us a lot,” Bailey said. Center Michael Eades (6’4”) is a big athletic player who will help the Chargers’ inside game, said Bailey. Forward Nigel Rich (6’1”) will be counted on to defend bigger opponents and for rebounding, said Bailey. Guard Jake Fletcher (5’8”) will provide “energy and offensive spark,” Bailey said. Ruffin Creekmore (6’3”) adds depth to the front line at the center position, said Bailey. Moving up Several players are moving up from junior varsity. Cody (See Chargers, page B2) The Middlesex varsity girls basketball team held on to defeat visiting Northumberland 56-54 on Tuesday. It was the first test for the Lady Chargers and their strong bench. Behind a full-court press, the Lady Chargers bolted to a 20-12 lead after the first quarter and built a 41-25 lead by halftime. “Every girl was aggressive on the press and hustling,” said Middlesex head coach William Griffin. “I played every girl in the first half.” Northumberland had trouble adjusting to the fast pace of the Lady Chargers’ press and speed of the reserves. “I was trying to give my starters a rest, and when I put in my reserves they performed well in the first half,” said Griffin. Griffin said he told his team at halftime that Northumberland was going to “mount the pressure on them. They are a very good team and they have a very good coach.” Middlesex was not aggressive in the second half. Northumberland started driving and forcing MHS turnovers. After three periods, Middlesex led 53-37. However, the Indians outscored MHS 17-3 in the fourth quarter. All 15 of Ashae Burnett’s points came in the first half. She got in foul trouble and sat out the third period. Burnett fouled out early in the fourth quarter and Middlesex temporarily lost its composure as Northumberland forced more turnovers, said Griffin. Sophomore guard Amanda Brown left the game with stomach problems in the third period. “She played a heck of a game while she was in,” said Griffin. Brown had 6 points and 4 assists. A pair of 3-pointers by Northumberland’s Ciarra Turner brought the Lady Indians close to a comeback win. Lady Chargers co-captain Micah Reed stepped up with two minutes left and took charge, said Griffin. “I was really proud of her.” M. Reed totaled 13 points and 11 rebounds. “Kiersten Baylor played a big role rebounding and on the fast-break,” said Griffin. She scored all of her 10 her points on the fast-break, and also hauled in 10 rebounds. Kimberly Ammons added 6 points, and Brianna Brooks, Chelsea Lewter and Megan Payne each had 2. MHS wrestlers down Indians; Wines ties school pin record The Middlesex High School wrestling team split its first meet of the season Monday by defeating Northumberland 57-15, and losing 48-36 to King William. Northumberland had many forfeits in weight classes, but Middlesex won three matches on the mat. Brandon Kearney got his first high school win in the 145-pound weight class with a pin in 3:22. Thomas Norman also got his first win with a 12-5 decision in the 152pound weight class, and Ean Reed won the 160-pound weight class 12-5. King William has a strong and experienced team, noted MHS coach Lee Anderson. “We were tied 36-36 with two matches left, and King William performed very strong in those final matches. I was very pleased that we competed solidly against them.” Against the Cavaliers, Cameron Wines won the 119-pound division with a pin in 3:25. Wines now has 27 career pins, which ties the school record. The pin record is shared by former Charger Nick Hornbeck, who also had 27 career pins. “Cameron will break that record for sure this year,” said Anderson. Other MHS wrestlers to win in the King William match were Chris Mason, who pinned his opponent in 1:36 in the 130-pound weight class; Alex Pratt, who won the 171-pound division with a pin in 2:53; and Bradon Jessup, who won on an injury default. Middlesex also had three junior varsity winners. Reese Harris won his match in the 130-pound division with a pin in 1:30; Darrien Fisher won a 6-5 decision; and Dylan Norwood won in the 153-pound class with a pin in 1:49. Middlesex senior forward Ashae Burnett drives past a defender during Tuesday’s win over Northumberland. Burnett led the Lady Chargers with 15 points. (Photo by Tom Chillemi) “This was a confidence builder,” said Griffin. “Northumberland is a tough team. We have depth. It made no difference who I put in the game, these girls really stepped up. “I was proud of the way they kept their heads up. They showed heart. These young ladies are fighters. We can’t help but get better,” said Griffin. Middlesex played Group AA Louisa in the James Monroe Tournament yesterday, Dec. 3. The finals are on Saturday. On Monday, Dec. 8, Middlesex is at Essex. MHS JVs by Tom Chillemi The Middlesex High School junior varsity girls basketball team lost 31-30 to visiting Northumberland on Tuesday. Middlesex had an 8-point lead in the second quarter but standout center Chelsi Blake got in foul trouble and had to be taken out of the game. “That kind of turned the tide of the game,” said JV Lady Charger head coach Mike Lewis. Middlesex staged a rally late in the game, but fell short. “We had our chances under the basket,” said Lewis “We have to capitalize on the easy baskets in the paint, and I think we’ll be okay.” Lewis lost all of his starters from last year’s team to the varsity. “Basically, it’s a new look, but I’m optimistic about our chances for the coming season,” he said. (See MHS JVs, page B2) B2 • Southside Sentinel • Urbanna, Va. • Dec. 4, 2008 Chargers to host Essex . . . Hunter (6’3”), one of the top scorers and rebounders on last year’s JVs, will be on the wing. “He has the potential to be a very key contributor,” said Bailey. Junior Matt Duke (6’2”) “plays tough inside and will give us some good minutes up front,” said Bailey. Sophomore Davonne Bryant (5’7”) will get playing time at guard. “He’s a solid player on both ends and understands the game well, and is a tough competitor,” Bailey said. Sophomore Shawn Lee (5’7”) “has a lot of potential and is a very quick guard,” said Bailey. “Hopefully he can give us a spark with his quickness.” Bailey said he’ll be depending on these former JV players. “JV coaches Jason Daniel and Jerry Duke did a good job of getting them prepared for playing on the varsity.” Junior Sean Sutherlin (5’9”) at guard “will give us depth at guard and outside shooting,” said Bailey. Junior Markus Hammond (6’0”) brings “athletic ability and provides depth at guard,” said Bailey. Sophomore Ryan Dixon (6’0”), a transfer form Essex, “is very athletic and has a lot of potential,” Bailey said. Overall program When Bailey came to MHS four years ago he implemented a comprehensive basketball program stressing fundamentals to younger players. This season, freshmen and sophomores have been through the program from 8th grade up, Correction In last week’s caption under the YMCA dodgeball champions photo, Kyle Bogese was incorrectly identified as Ryan Bogese. fishing (Continued from page B1) noted Bailey. “We’re beginning to see the benefits to my system being in place. Younger players will take a more prominent role.” His program is used at St. Clare Walker Middle School. “We’re taking it to the sixth grade level and starting to get building blocks in place.” Last season Bailey had five seniors who had never played basketball at Middlesex High. “It’s hard to teach basketball in one year,” Bailey noted. The Chargers will play manto-man defense. “If we can rebound better and combine that with our tough defense, we should be able to improve,” said Bailey. “I now have an intense group of players. They have the ability to execute some of the things I’ve wanted to do for the past couple of years,” he said. “I believe they’re smart enough to listen and apply it under pressure on the court.” The Northumberland Tournament previously scheduled for this weekend has been cancelled. Instead, the Middlesex varsity and JVs will play at Northumberland on Friday, Dec. 5. Game times are 6 p.m. for the JVs and 7:30 p.m. for the varsity. On Monday, Dec. 8, Mid-dlesex will host Essex, “a definite favorite in the region,” which has forward John Dillie, an AllState candidate, said Bailey. “Come out and support the team,” said Bailey. “They are a great group of guys and are excited about representing the community. They take it seriously and they want to make fans proud of Middlesex and Middlesex High School basketball.” MHS will host Lancaster on Thursday, Dec. 11. Bailey is assisted by coaches Jason Daniel, Amy Daniel, Mark Taylor and Marlon Parker. Parents are encouraged to bring their little ones for an evening of shopping and fun. The program center will be transformed into a holiday onestop shop where all gifts are $10 or less. Children will be able to complete their shopping lists for their parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, friends, neighbors, and even their teachers. In addition to shopping, children will be invited to dabble in Santa’s Workshop, where they will enjoy creating holiday crafts such as Christmas cards, ornaments, picture frames and wrapping paper. Come and warm up with hot cocoa and homemade baked goods, and don’t worry about dinner because one will be available for $3. There will also be a surprise visit from the North Pole with photo opportunities available for all the little ones. Donations of $10 for the Y Wonderland are now being accepted. All proceeds benefit the YMCA’s Strong Communities Annual Giving Campaign. Donations may be dropped off at the YMCA between now and December 3. For more information, contact Jessica Wilson at 776-8846. To assist in the holiday season, the Middlesex Family YMCA will be conducting a Holiday Camp on December 22-23, December 29-31 and January 2, while the youth are out of school. During the camp, the youth will be doing numerous arts and crafts projects and will go on a trip every day of camp. Stripers are biting in the Rappahannock River in the area of Towles Point. Small lures are working best with 10-inch umbrellas being most effective. Schooling stripers were hitor-miss this past week in Fleets Bay above Windmill Bar, at Buoy 59A and along the Cut Channel. Birds are working on small menhaden. Gannets have made a showing this week, but the large schools of ocean fish have yet to materialize. Live eels have been effective near the concrete ships, but again no large numbers of fish. Large and small umbrella rigs are producing in open waters. Bucktails and parachute lures with grubs or shad, and Storm-type lures fished on bottom bouncing rigs and up high, are working well as are swimming plugs. Our family had fun on Friday chasing small keepers under birds in 20 feet of water between MH1 and Wolf Trap Light. Casting bucktails with soft plastic trailers or small weighted shad did the trick and produced a limit of fish to 22 inches. Thrash operates Queen’s Creek Outfitters in Mathews County. MHS JVs . . . Our focus book, “Pilgrim Children Had Many Chores” helped the students learn about the past. We compared our lives today to the life of the settlers in Jamestown and to the life of pilgrim children long ago. We all are thankful we live now and did not live long ago! All the students agreed the pilgrim children had a hard life. The students appreciate and are thankful for all they have and for their lifestyle. The students created their own Native American necklace and headband. They practiced making patterns on their headbands. We traveled to the Jamestown Settlement. The boys and girls went back in time to the 17th century to learn about the culture of the Powhatan Indians in a re-created village. The students went aboard replicas of the ships that brought the first settlers across the Atlantic Ocean from England to Virginia, the “Susan Constant,” “Discovery,” and the “Godspeed.” They discovered how the settlers lived and worked. The boys and girls learned that history teaches us about the interesting lives of people long ago and how those people helped to build our nation. They learned that we celebrate holidays to remember people and events of long ago. 50’s Days During the month of November, the kindergarten classes at Middlesex Elementary School learned about life long ago. The students learned history relates events that have already happened, and history teaches us about the interesting lives of people long ago. On the 50th day of school, kindergarten classes celebrated “50s Day.” Some dressed in poodle skirts or had on jeans, white shirts, leather coats, and penny loafers with their hair slicked back. We went back in time to the “50s Diner” and had Governor’s School to be discussed at MHS Tuesday An informational meeting about the Chesapeake Bay Governor’s School will be held at Middlesex High School on Tuesday, Dec. 9, at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium. All current ninth grade students who are interested in attending the Governor’s School next year and their par- ents should attend this meeting to get an insight into exactly what Governor’s School is and how to apply to the program. If anyone is unable to attend, but is interested in the program or needs any further information, please contact Anne Baltrusaitis in the MHS guidance office at 758-9702. Middlesex Elementary School kindergarten students celebrating “50s Days.” a sock hop! Coke floats were served while listening to 50s music on “45 records” on the record player. The day was filled with many math activities focusing on the number 50. The students learned how life was different in the 1950s from how we live today. Technology has changed immensely, as well as the music we listen to, clothes we wear, and how readily supplies are available to us now. Many different literature selections were shared with the children, giving information and pictures to help them to realize how our world is constantly changing. All students agreed they are happy they live now rather than long ago in the past! Excellent Estimators! Recently at Middlesex Elementary School, the Math Committee sponsored an estimation contest. Each grade level had a container filled with different sized materials such as pine cones, Lifesavers, pea pods and marshmallows. Every student was permitted one guess as to how many items were in the container in their grade level. The student who had the closest guess to the actual number was chosen as the winner. The award was presented to Montague Farms president Bill Taliaferro and vice president Bryan Taliaferro during the council’s annual meeting luncheon in Glen Allen in November. Montague Farms, owned and operated by the Taliaferro family, began as a family grain farm in Essex County and has expanded under the leadership of brothers Bill, David and Bryan Taliaferro, to a production and processing operation for food-grade soybeans for specialty export markets in Japan and other Far Eastern countries. This spring, the company opened a new export operation in Windsor, a $2.8 million investment that will increase the market options for the company, as well as 100 soybean growers in Virginia and North Carolina who hold contracts with Montague Farms. “The company has provided critical leadership to the Virginia Agribusiness Council, including service by both Bryan and David Taliaferro on the council’s board of directors during the past 17 years,” said a council spokesperson. “They continue to share valuable insight and represent the agribusiness industry on many legislative, regulatory and environmental issues of interest to Virginia agribusinesses. Over the past 30 years their service to the soybean, corn and small grains sectors, has been tireless, as has their involvement in encouraging research at Virginia Tech to improve varieties, breeds, and best management From left are Bryan Taliaferro, vice president of Montague Farms; Charlie Wood of the Virginia Agribusiness Council; and Bill Taliaferro, president of Montague Farms. practices.” “The Council’s Agribusiness of the Year award is given to a member of the Council for exceptional contributions to Virginia agribusiness,” said council president Donna Pugh Johnson. “Montague Farms is certainly exceptional, and it is a privilege to recognize them for their many achievements and history of support.” In making the award presentation, council board chairman Charles T. Wood praised Montague Farms for “their innovative thinking that has been a guiding force for grain and soybean production in Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic Region. We are excited to have this opportunity to recognize their many contributions to our industry and the council, and look forward to working with Montague Farms in the future to ensure the successful growth of the agribusiness industry.” The Virginia Agribusiness Council is a non-profit member organization committed to representing the agriculture and forest industries in the Commonwealth through effective government relations efforts. Headquartered in Richmond, the council has a combined membership of over 40,000 persons including agricultural producers, suppliers, marketers, processors and commodity associations from throughout Virginia. M0011_081103_155926 210721 OVEX3134167_000 American Legion Post #82 of Saluda has partnered with Heart of Virginia Council, Boy Scouts of America (BSA), in bringing a new and unique program for boys in Middlesex as well as boys located in surrounding counties. As of November 24, the American Legion became the chartering organization of Troop 345, which is under the direct leadership of Scoutmaster Karyn Bristow. One of the objectives of the American Legion is to work with youth, and an agreement to support Scouting was voted on and approved at the first national convention of the American Legion held at Minneapolis, Minn., in 1919. “Both of our organizations believe in a strong nation, strong families, strong communities, and service to others. The collaborative efforts between the two organizations have the potential to make a significant impact on our community as well as develop the leadership in our youth. Both organizations are very enthusiastic to have this opportunity to work together,” said Saluda Post Commander Keith McAuley. Only a couple of weeks ago Bristow approached the BSA leadership just to “chat” about this idea. Little did she know that a troop would form so quickly. “The parents are almost as excited as the kids, and family development is a cornerstone of both the Boy Scouts and the American Legion,” she said. This troop is known as an “Ability Awareness” Troop and is designed to bring the Scouting program to those young men that many times seem to be left out of main stream programs. While any boy of Scout age is encouraged to join, the primary focus of Troop 345 is to allow Scouts with moderate to severe disabilities the time and modifications or accommodations necessary to work on all Scouting activities including badge advancement. Bristow is a special education teacher at Peasley Middle School in Gloucester. At present, Troop 345 has eight new members. Several are from Gloucester and two are from King William County. However, a few families have expressed interest in Middlesex. The troop is open to all surrounding counties. The leadership consists of adults with varying degrees of experience in the field. Many of the leaders already know some of the youth. “It is a wonderful blessing to be able to work with such an enthusiastic group with many years of experience,” said Bristow. “I know most of the Scouts already, and am so happy to watch their excitement about Scouting. It is hard to get them to focus on anything else right now. I was not sure what to expect, but these boys already love Scouting. We were supposed to start meeting in January, but everyone wanted to start right away. I just love it!” The first activity of Troop 345 will be participating in the Gloucester Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 6. Meetings will take place twice a month on the first and third Mondays at the American Legion Post in Saluda. Those interested in learning more, having a son join the program, or interested in volunteering time and talents to the program, contact Bristow at 804-854-4957. Above, from left, are Millie Hampton, BSA District Membership Chairman; Karyn Bristow, Troop 345 Scoutmaster; Keith “Mac” McAuley, Commander of Legion Post 82; and Marvin “JR” VanBuskirk, serving as the charter organization representative between the Legion Post 82 and the BSA. Nationally, approximately 17,000 trees will go to activeduty troops in 15 countries and at 37 bases in the U.S. The “Trees for the Troops” program was started by The Christmas Spirit Foundation. Also, a program sponsor, FedEx, is getting the trees from growers to military families. “We are very proud to be part of this thoughtful program,” said White. Macey’s Tree Farm (7766043) is located on Route 630 in Hartfield. It offers five varieties of trees, and is open Friday and Sunday afternoons and all day on Saturday. The instrument Tim is playing is a bass xylophone used in the Orff Method of teaching music. It was purchased with the grant money generated by the Holly Ball and received from the Tidewater Foundation . Holly Ball is Dec. 27 Each year the Tidewater Foundation disperses grants to a diverse group of community institutions and agencies located throughout the Northern Neck and Tidewater area. Over the course of the past 10 years, the Tidewater Foundation, through tradition and stewardship, has contributed about $247,000 to these local entities. The funds for these grants are from the proceeds of The Holly Ball, a 113-year-old traditional debutante ball, which takes place each year in December. In 2008 the Tidewater Foun- dation made thirty-one such contributions, made possible by the proceeds of the 112th Holly Ball in 2007. The 113th Holly Ball will take place Saturday, December 27, from 7 p.m. until midnight at Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club in Kilmarnock. Queen Jocelyn Maguire Stephens of Irvington will reign over the Holly Realm. The proceeds from this tradition will continue to be used to support the Tidewater Foundation’s commitment to cultural enrichment and education in the Northern Neck and Tidewater areas. added the rescue squad relies on donations to operate and is starting its annual fund drive. “Support from the community is what keeps us in business,” Filling said at Monday’s council meeting. Filling said the squad also needs more volunteers. “We need two things—money and people.” Area residents soon will receive a letter that offers them a free photography sitting and family portrait. The photos will be taken at the Urbanna Rescue Squad building on December 6 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 919-583-9612 to make an appointment.
