Host King William (14-7)
overpowered Middlesex to win
the Tidewater District Tournament 67-49 on Saturday.
It was the first Tidewater

The Lady Cavaliers held Middlesex’s top scorer and district

4 points.
Patricia Price, who joined
Burnett on first team All-District
squad, stepped up and scored 28
points in the game for the Lady
Chargers.
MHS center Dannie Green
had 7 points and 10 rebounds.
Mecca Bowens had 4 points, and
Joy Burrell, Sherita Burse and
Ashley Robinson each added 2.
King William’s 67 points were
the most points scored against
Middlesex this season. “They
were on us,” said MHS coach
William Griffin. “They took
the game to us and we were not
focused. That just killed us.”

trouble in recent district tournaments, losing in the first round
last year and in the championship
game this year.
“You can’t beat anyone shooting 25 percent from the field,”
said Griffin.
Griffin noted that during the
last week of the regular season
the Lady Chargers had defeated
King William. “They were on.
They took the game to us,” he
said.
“You can take the loss two
ways. It could be a blessing in
disguise. Your head can get
too big when you go into these
regionals. It woke us up. We’re
going to work hard in practice,”
said Griffin.
“We just have to play better
and our players know it. One
thing I know for sure is they will
play much better in their next
game,” said Griffin.
The Lady Chargers hosted
Sussex yesterday, February 23,
in the quarterfinals of the Region
A Tournament.
The winner is scheduled to
play undefeated Northern Neck
champion James Monroe in the
regional semifinals at King William on Friday, February 25, at
8 p.m. The Lady Chargers lost
to James Monroe, the state’s
second-ranked Group A team,
twice in the regular season.
The regional championship
will be at King William this Saturday at 8 p.m.
In the district semifinals on
February 18, the Lady Chargers
used a third quarter rally to eliminate Mathews 56-44.
Leading the Lady Charger
attack against Mathews (5-11)
were Burse with 15 points,
including four 3-pointers, and
Burnett with 14 points, including
two 3-pointers.
Dannie Green had the best
game of her career with 13
points and 19 rebounds. “Dannie
dominated,” said Griffin. Price
added 9 points, Robinson had 4
and Bowens 1.
In the other district semifinal,
King William downed West
Point 47-44. King William visited Franklin yesterday in the

Correction
The article titled “Middlesex
Youth win District Free Throw
Titles” in the February 17
issue contained some incorrect
information. The article stated
that Katrina Reed was last
year’s 13-year-old champion.
Last years 13-year-old division champion was actually
Ashley Figg, who went on to
the district level on February
8, 2004 at Botetourt School in
Gloucester where she placed
first and advanced to state
level competition. At Benedictine High School in Richmond, Ashley placed second
in the state, making 19 of 25
baskets.

The Tidewater Soil and Water
Conservation District, through
the Virginia Association of Soil
and Water Conservation Districts
(VASWCD), has two scholarship
opportunities available.
These
scholarships
are
intended to promote the education of Virginia citizens in technical fields of natural resource
conservation and environmental
protection. The awards will be
considered for students majoring
in, or showing a strong desire to
major in, a course curriculum
related to natural resource conservation and/or environmental
studies and who are residents
of Gloucester, Mathews or
Middlesex counties.
One scholarship, in the amount
of $1,000, was established in
memory of Mathews County resident Martin J. Menges a former
district director, co-founder and
past president of the York River
Chapter of the Chesapeake Bay
Foundation, and co-founder of
the watershed group Save the
Ole Piankatank.
VASWCD will award four
scholarships in the amount of
$1,000 each on a statewide competitive basis. Each SWCD is to
select one applicant and forward
the application to the VASWCD
office for consideration. Four
applicants from among the 47
statewide conservation districts
will be awarded the scholarships.
Applicants need to complete
only one application, which will
be used for both the VASWCD
and Menges scholarships.
Individual applicants must be
full-time students enrolled in or
who have applied to a college
undergraduate or graduate level
curriculum. Applicants shall
document a class ranking in the
top 20% of his or her graduating
class or a 3.0 or greater grade
point average or appropriate
equivalent of individual scholastic achievement. The applicant’s
most recent official high school
or college transcript must accompany the application. A copy of
a school transcript will not be
accepted.
Applicants shall demonstrate
active interest in conservation.
Selection will be based on scholastic ability, leadership qualities
and educational goals. Individual
recipients of scholarships may
reapply for scholarship consideration in ensuing years.
Scholarship guidelines and
applications are available at the
district office at 6969 Fox Hunt
Lane (off Business Route 17) in
Gloucester, or can be mailed at
your request. Call 804-693-3562,
ext.# 5, and ask for LaVerne or
Bill.
Applications are due March
1. Mail completed application to
Tidewater SWCD, P.O. Box 677,
Gloucester, VA 23061, or handdeliver to the district office.

A Biblical Perspective
of Suffering
By Rev. Walt McKibbon
Friendship Baptist Church
We
associate Valentine’s
Day with romantic love and
friendship, and rightly so, but
it actually originated as a day
to commemorate the life and
sacrifice of a godly priest named
Valentine who lost his head—not
over a woman—but over his
defiance of the Roman emperor
Claudius. Saint Valentine was
executed for his Christian convictions on February 14, 269.
Valentine’s Day is more
about suffering for Christ’s sake
than it is about romantic love.
The Bible honestly records the
human response to suffering,
but it also gives us an entirely
different understanding of the
role that suffering plays in a
Christian’s life. We desire to be
free from every form of suffering, but we are reminded that it
is part of the human experience.
Psalm 34:19 tells us that “Many
are the troubles of the righteous,
but the Lord delivers him out of
them all.”
The conventional wisdom of
the Old Testament teaches that
the righteous will prosper and
be blessed, but the wicked will
suffer. That doesn’t explain why
sometimes good people suffer.
The book of Job was written for
that very reason. Job didn’t suffer
because of his evil ways; he was
a righteous man. His suffering
came from demonic attacks,
from a wife who had given up on
him, and from misguided friends
whose worldly thinking led them
to accuse Job unjustly. Why God
allowed Job to suffer the way He
did defies imagination, but He
knew Job would pass the test.
The book of James in the New
Testament gives us a different
perspective about suffering in
the lives of godly people. James
encourages us to face difficulties
and suffering with an attitude
of joy. That’s right, you read
it correctly—joy! That’s a hard
concept to grasp, but here is
why he said such a strange thing.
Suffering builds godly character
and develops perseverance in us.
Suffering brings us to maturity
in the faith, removes doubt and
double-mindedness from our
lives, and builds our confidence
in the Lord. Blessings await
those who endure suffering.
The Apostle Peter gives us
another perspective about suffering in his first letter to the early
church. When we suffer for doing
good, we are blessed and have an
opportunity to witness about our
Lord who suffered for us. We
shouldn’t be surprised when we
suffer for Christ’s sake. Peter
assures us that the Spirit of glory
and of God rests on us when we
suffer for being Christians.
In conclusion, the Bible
teaches that suffering is universal
(Gen.3: 17-19). It is the result of
the fall of mankind or “original
sin.” Suffering is also the result
of punishment for our individual
sins (Gal. 6:7-8). God allows
remedial suffering to bring about
repentance in our lives (Rev. 3:
19). And in Heb. 12:4-11 and in
Jas. 1:2-4 we find that God uses
suffering in our lives to discipline us. Our suffering can also
be used to bring glory to God (1
Peter 1:3-7).
Job’s friends did a lot of things
wrong, but they also did a few
things right. When they heard
about Job’s troubles, they traveled a great distance to be with
him. They had compassion for
their friend. When they saw
Job’s condition, they wept and
grieved. Then they did a remarkable thing. The three friends sat
on the ground with Job in silence
for seven days, because they saw
how great he was suffering.
Words are often inadequate
when it comes to suffering. A
loving presence and a compassionate silence can go a long way
toward comforting those who are
hurting.

Just in time for spring, the
Avolon boutique in Irvington
announced this week the
launching of its new website,
<shopavolon.com>. The website
features images of much of the
shop’s wide selection of women’s apparel, jewelry, handbags
and shoes by top international
designers and manufacturers.
Site viewers from anywhere
in the world can view the new
season’s fashions and even take
an animated virtual tour of the
shop on the Shop Tour page.
Avolon owner Sonja Smith
said, “Many of our customers
live out of town and visit regularly in the summer so this is a
good way for them to be able to
shop with us all year round. We
expect the site to help us attract
new customers as well. We have
gotten phone calls from all over
the country from people who
want clothing from the designers
we carry and now they will be
able to see what we have on their
own computer screens.”
Shopavolon.com was designed
by Ron Courtney of Blue River
Web Design, a local designer
who specializes in websites for
shops and businesses in this
area.

Art competition planned
The National Arts Program,
sponsored by the National Arts
Program Foundation, fosters
creativity by providing professional and nonprofessional artists, including children, with an
opportunity to show their works
publicly.
In the Middle Peninsula, there
are seven counties and/or townships that compete locally for
ribbons. Those winners will then
move to a regional art contest
held at the Bay School Cultural
Arts Center in Mathews. These
artists will compete for cash
awards and continuing education
scholarships.
Art Miller of Mathews, who
holds a doctorate in art, will be
one of the judges for the local
and regional shows. Artists are
judged on their original, creative
contributions in the field of fine
arts and crafts.
Counties participating are
Mathews, Gloucester, Middlesex,
Essex, King and Queen, King
William and the Town of West
Point. Entry forms are available
by calling the following:
• Mathews, Bay School Cultural Arts Center, Kim Moore,
725-1278, local show dates,
April 14-17.
• Gloucester, Renate Bumgarner, 693-4765, local show date,
April 2.
• Middlesex, Wanda Hollberg,
758-0085, local show dates,
April 8-9.
• King and Queen, Diane
Gaber, 785-5975, local show
dates, April 5-8.
Please call your county’s contact with any questions.
Deltaville Maritime Museum
by Nature Girl
and Kaptain Krunch
As we bid farewell to February, I just want to take a moment
and thank those who stick around
and keep the “home fires burning.” The great volunteers who
come to meetings, who show
up for work days, who come to
classes, who organize the library,
who work on displays, who send
money . . . well, you get the picture. We can’t do it without you.
So as we march into spring,
come by the park and museum
and see what’s going on. The
museum is open on Saturday
from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the
park is open daylight hours. And
here’s Krunch, who marches to a
different drummer!
John Smith has recently been
described as the “Homecoming
Queen” of the 2007 Jamestown
celebration, with replicas of his
rowboat building and retrospectives popping up everywhere.
Well, we want him to save us a
dance! Our research department
has uncovered a reference to a
“Quartered” boat. Four sections
and a connecting keel? Actually
quartered like a cow? Boy we
would love to see just a glimpse
in an old print of the configuration of this vessel. Artists always
are ahead of the curve of history.
Especially in the pre-photo era.
A contemporary of my father’s,
a now famous illustrator (Stan
Meltzoff), after having painted
moonscapes for sci-fi paperbacks
for years was heartened to find
that when man finally landed on
the moon it looked just like he’d
been drawing it for years! So
look back through your books,
gentle reader, and share with us
any drawings of H.M.S. Government Issue take-a-part boats circa
1608. We want to get started!
Thanks to Don and Chuck
and others, electricity and water
now course through the museum
property, especially the two new
buildings. What a great place to
mess with boats. Now we must
organize our dream boatshop
and display shed. You can be part
of this endeavor so come on out
and help—Sunday afternoons
weather permitting and then as
spring springs we’ll be around
more and more.

Around Deltaville
by T.D. Harris
Recently, Patsy Marshall Lee
told me about a “fur house” in
Church View where musicians
gather on Saturday nights and
play. It is open to the public and
donations are invited. Chairs are
set up and there is a stage. The
music is American music. It is
country and gospel. It is from the
heart and some of the songs are
written by locals and played for
the first time at the “fur house.”
Patsy gave me directions to get
there that went kinda like “take
17 past daddy’s house and turn
where the boys home used to
be. There is a brick church on
the right after you turn, and the
Dragon Run Store is on your left.
Go pass my sister Julie’s house
and look for a cinder block building and there is a house being
built, and it is on the right after
you pass the seafood house; it is
about 3 miles. You will see the
cars in the field.”
Well, a friend from Gloucester,
Margaret Perritt, said she loved
country music and her son
plays country music, as does
her daughter-in-law. Her son,
William, told her to check it
out. Think he thought my idea
of country music might not be
his idea. So Theresa and Steph
Smithdeal from Richmond (the
west end) said they would go
with us and off we went in the
dark of the night. Margaret and
I were in the back seat trying to
make sense of Patsy’s directions.
We do not know “Daddy” but
Patsy said there is a sign with a
big red crab in his yard and he
lives on 17 past Saluda going to
Church View. “Daddy” had said
we were welcome to come.
Theresa is a “come here” from
Virginia Beach and doesn’t
understand that if you are going
to take a left, you need to be in
the left lane. We made our left
from the right lane and started
down a lonely, dark country road
looking for Julie’s house and the
seafood business, and a cinder
block building, none of which
we ever saw.
When we entered the next
county after having gone 3 miles,
we tried to turn around without
hitting any wildlife or trees or
going into a ditch. Finally, one of
us spotted cars neatly parked in a
field with a rope across the drive-
way. Dark, it was really dark,
and no lights or any sign of a “fur
house.” Someone in the car suggested we put the window down
so we could hear the music. We
parked as close to a building that
music was coming from and got
out and followed a man going
into the “fur house.”
Upon entering, the man asked
if any of us could sing. He said
he had come from Maryland just
to play. Thinking it would be
nice to meet “Daddy,” I asked if
anyone knew Wilton Marshall,
aka “Shuck.” Everyone in hearing distance turned around to
check out the old ladies looking
for “Shuck.” Wilton welcomed
us and told us to find a seat,
which we did and later when
Julie came to say goodnight to
“Daddy,” we got to meet her.
Wilton didn’t play because he
was tired from rabbit hunting
and the group that was playing
was from somewhere else. They
were really good and it was a
foot-stomping,
hand-clapping
night.
Guess you are wondering
about the “fur house.” It belongs
to Mr. Greenwood who used to
be a taxidermist. The “fur house”
is where he worked. There are
lovely deer heads on the wall;
some were still sporting Santa
hats. Fur pelts were hanging on
the wall, and there was a Christmas tree with a goose under it.
The stage is large enough for
11 people to play comfortably
and the room will hold about
50 people. And there were 11
people playing most of the
time we were there. Wouldn’t
you know the smallest person
on stage played bass. Another
lady played a banjo and she was
good. There were guitars and a
harmonica player who is blind.
The master of ceremonies said
there were a lot of people there
he had never seen. The blind man
said he had never seen any of the
people there. It was a night of
good humor and good music.
What was amazing to me was
that the news of the place has not
filtered down the county. There
were no familiar faces and it
was like being in another world.
But fun. There were homemade
cookies and drinks. It was just
country. The best of America
and right around Deltaville.
Notes from Dragonville
by Mrs. T.W. Brooks Sr.
We extend sympathy to Mrs.
Adele Foster, whose brother and
an uncle died recently.
We also extend sympathy to
the family of Claybrook Carlton,
who died February 11. He was
a son of Mr. and Mrs. Wirtley
Carlton and had relatives and
friends living in our area.
Rev. Medlen has stopped by
to see me and called about every
day to hear how I am doing. I
am doing better. A trip to Dr.
Robusto in Urbanna helped a lot.
I enjoy eating turnip greens
and cornbread. I like cabbage
and other vegetables with wheat
flour bread.
The school children are studying about our black neighbors’
history. When I was a child
we called them “colored.” The
older ones we called “uncle” or
“aunt.” (“Aunt” Norris Graves
was born during slavery. She
and my grandmother were children about the same age. I can
remember Aunt Norris visiting
my grandmother. They would
laugh and talk.
Norah and I would play with
Gladys and Lillie Johnson. One
year my daddy took the hogs
out of the big pen and put them
in a smaller pen to fatten them.
The big pen was a rail fence.
Norah and I would walk on the
rails.
Once, when Lillie and Gladys
were playing with us, Norah
and I wanted to walk on the top
of the fence. One of them said,
“We can’t walk on the fence; it
isn’t lady like.”
