Middlesex girls begin
tourney play next week
by Tom Chillemi
The Middlesex High varsity volleyball team defeated King William in 5
games for a Tidewater District road
win on October 24.
The Lady Chargers won the first
and third games 25-20 and 25-18,
while King William won the second
game in overtime 26-24, and the
fourth game 25-16.
The Lady Chargers triumphed in
the fifth and deciding game 15-11.
“My girls played with better consistency and covered the court better
than they have this year,” said MHS
coach Jennifer Harrow. “The girls
really played as a team.”
Angel Abbott, with 16 digs, and
Morgan Blake, who had 3 aces, 4 kills
and 13 digs, both “played extremely
good defense,” said Harrow. Sarah
Ann Goodrich, with 3 aces, 9 kills
and 6 digs, “had some nice, strong
hits at the net.”
Also for Middlesex, Erika Britton had 4 aces, 21 assists, 3 kills, 3
digs and 1 block assist; Austen Taylor
Dozier, 4 assists; Carlee Browder,
3 kills, 1 solo block, 1 block assist;
Shelby Lewter, 1 ace, 5 kills, 1 dig;
Rachael Howard, 1 ace, 1 assist, 2
kills, 5 digs; and Beth Eanes, 2 aces,
9 kills, 8 digs.
The Lady Chargers visited Mathews
on October 30 for their regular season
finale.
The Tidewater District Tournament
begins Wednesday, November 6, on
the courts of the higher seed, which
should be Mathews or West Point.
Pairings were not known at press time.

Seahawks win tournament crown
The St. Clare Walker (SCW)
Middle School Seahawks did not
allow a goal and defeated Ware
Academy in the semifinals and Chesapeake Academy in the finals to win
the Independent Schools Athletic
Association (ISAC) soccer tournament at Christchurch School last
week.

It was tournament time and the
excitement was in the air on October
22 from both teams and spectators.
From the beginning the Seahawks
played well together. Emilie Smith
shoved a pass up the line to George
Shaw and he cut in and finished with
a hard shot that deflected off a Ware
defender and into the goal for a 1-0
Seahawk lead.
As the SCW defense controlled
the Ware offense, Seahawk Kian
Cheatham battled multiple defenders
and drove the ball down the left side
and made a perfect cross from the
baseline to near post. Emilie Smith
then made a solid one touch shot past
the goalie for a 2-0 halftime lead. “It
was one of Emilie’s strongest shots
of the year,” said SCW coach Eric
Smith.
The Seahawks had some great runs
and shots from multiple players in
the second half but the Ware goalie
made some very good blocks.
“The ball control and field awareness of Cheatham and Jack Ruark
allowed us to control the midfield
and have a solid hold on the ball,”
said Coach Smith. “The mixture of
Adam Smith, Kaitlyn Fomin, and
Shawn Haskiell made us dominant
on the defensive end of the field and
kept Sarah Walton safe at goal with a
great shutout.
“Our subs played well,” continued
Coach Smith. “The standouts were
Cole Ruark, Matthew Hart and Lisa
Oiler.”
The win advanced SCW to the
title game against regular season
champion Chesapeake Academy
(CA). “We were very excited to get
a chance to finally decide the winner
of our two teams,” said Coach
Smith.“We had split our regular
season games and we were looking
to pay them back for our only regular
season loss.”
CA was awarded the regular season
title because it had more goals than
the Seahawks in their two regular
season matches.
Seahawks 1, CA 0
It was ISAC Championship game
day and the excitement was in the
air.“The whole season came down to
one 60 minute game and we knew to
win we would have to want it more,”
said SCW Coach Smith. “The kids
gave me everything they had to put
pressure on Chesapeake.”

MHS JVs improve to 12-4
The Middlesex High JV volleyball
team fought hard to get a win on the
road against King William Cavaliers
on October 24 to improve its record to
12-4 overall and 4-2 in the Tidewater
District.
“The girls worked hard the entire
match and didn’t give up,” said JV
Lady Charger coach Jessica Morris.
King William won the first game
26-24, and MHS captured the next
two games 25-23 and 15-13.
Lauren Shores led MHS with a total
of 18 playable serves, 9 of which were
aces. L. Shores also had 3 digs, 1 kill
and 2 assists. Avis Keeling had a lot
of touches and had 4 aces, 4 digs and
1 kill.
Also for MHS, Maddie Norwood, 2
aces, 8 digs, 2 kills; Hailey Walton, 2
aces, 1 dig, 2 assists; Tambria Wake,

Meghan Shores, 2 digs, 1 kill, 1 assist;
Olivia Major, 3 digs, 1 kill, 1 assist;
Maggie Bull, 5 digs, 1 kill; Brooke
Daniel, 1 kill, 1 dig.
The JV Lady Chargers hosted King

Colts Midgets blank Yorktown 14-0
This past Saturday in Yorktown the Middlesex Colts
Midgets shut out the Yorktown Patriots 14-0.The Colts
Midgets dominated the game from start to finish and have
now won their last three games.
The Colt defense, led by Tyrell Key and JoMari Gonzalez,
stifled the Patriot offense throughout the game. Key made
several tackles for losses while Gonzalez sealed the game
with an interception return to the Yorktown 2 yard line.
On offense the Colts were led by Adam Smith who
scored both Colt touchdowns on short runs, and Isaiah
Burse who kicked a 2-point conversion.
Colts head coach Fred West was proud of his total team
effort. “We were dominating through the entire game.
Our defense played great. Yorktown had negative offensive yards for the game. Our offensive line controlled the
line of scrimmage and, as a result, we won the game,” said
West.

“Now we want to end the season on a winning note and
defeat Williamsburg Tuesday evening,” said West.
In the Mites game, the Colts lost to the Peninsula
Youth Football and Cheerleading Organization (PYFCO)
defending Super Bowl champion Patriots 34-20.The
Colts played the Patriots evenly throughout the contest.
However, turnovers doomed the Colts as two of the turnovers were converted into Patriot touchdowns.
The Colts were led by the running of Xzavion Griffin
who scored touchdowns on runs of 33 and 50 yards, and
Thomas Roane who sprinted 38 yards for another touchdown. Griffin also scored on a conversion run.
In the Mighty Mites game, the Colts lost 33-6.Talon
Cheatham scored the only touchdown for the Colts on a
15-yard bootleg run.
In the Juniors game, the Colts lost 28-6. The Colts’ lone
touchdown occurred when Thomas Hamilton stripped the
Yorktown quarterback on a sack, and Cole Radabaugh
picked up the loose football and rumbled 41 yards to
paydirt.
On Tuesday, October 29, the Colts completed their regular season at Williamsburg Green at Warhill.

may grow through our efforts
to give opportunity to all. Our
YMCA is extremely thankful
for our major donors, who see
the change affected through our
programs and services and want
to help. Our Y story is very easy
to tell, as it unfolds each day
throughout Middlesex. From
diabetes support to hundreds
of youth instilled with Y values
through childcare to communities created through our group
exercise classes, the YMCA
unifies our county.
“In 2014, we approach
our tenth year in service to
Middlesex, and it is our major
donors that created the pathway for our success,” continued Kissman. “Without

Seahawks win soccer title . . .
(Continued from page B1)
Ten minutes into the game
and SCW was awarded a corner
kick. Adam Smith was pulled
up from defense for a chance to
score with the other offensive
players. The ball came across
and a Chesapeake player
headed it up and it landed in
the middle. Both E. Smith and
A. Smith swung at the ball and
A. Smith came away with a
great kick and planted the goahead goal in the back of the
net. This was only his third
goal of the season and he did
not realize then how important
it would turn out to be.
“That goal was what we
needed to turn the momentum
to us and it gave us an advantage for the rest of the game,”
said Coach Smith. “From this
moment on we went to a defensive stance and each and every
one of our players contributed
their heart and soul to win this
game.
With SCW up 1-0 at the half,
Coach Smith and assistant
coach Clayton Hogge devised
a strategy. “We played a “Chelsea” style defense the whole
second half and we held off
their attacks over and over,”
said Coach Smith.
During this both teams
started to get physical and
yellow cards were handed out.
“The longer the game went on
you could see that our team
became more determined to
win and Chesapeake seemed
to get more desperate to tie
the score,” said Coach Smith.
“I was constantly checking the
time left in the game and every
Seahawk player, parent and
fan was excited to hear the end
of the game. The final whistle
blew and we were the 2013
ISAC Soccer Champions.”
Offensively,
E.
Smith,
George Shaw, Anthony Pullman, Colby Mitchem, Hunter
Collier and Simon Unsworth
played outstanding games.
Defensively Adam Smith,
Jack Ruark, Kian Cheatham,
Shawn Haskiell, Ken Beam,
Kaitlyn Fomin, and MacLean
Thomas became a force that
could not be scored on.
Goalie Sarah Walton had
her best game of the year with
multiple saves. “Her best save
good to finally come away with
the win after coming in second
for two straight seasons. This
was the first soccer championship St. Clare Walker Middle
School has won. This win was
very special for me because
this team was full of kids that
I have coached for many years
and it included both of my
kids. For me to share in this
great season and to be a part of
school history with this group
of kids is something I will
never forget. To take a young
group of kids with varying
skill levels and teach them to
play as a solid team unit is
every coach’s goal. For them
to finish the season with a 8-1
record and to win the 2013
ISAC Championship is truly
the highlight of my coaching
career,” said Coach Smith.
came from a very high lobbed
kick that ended up at the upper
90 of the goal and she jumped
and hit it off the cross bar to
save a crucial goal to tie the
game,” said Coach Smith.
“Congratulations to the
2013 SCW soccer players. You
are true champions and you
deserve the recognition,” said
Coach Smith.
“I would like to thank
everyone for the support we
received during the tournament. It was humbling to look
across the field and see the
sidelines filled with parents,
families, friends, teachers, and
school board members,” said
Coach Smith.

Middlesex students participate
in online gubernatorial forum
On November 5, Virginia
residents will elect Republican
candidate and current Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli,
or Democratic candidate Terry
McAuliffe as Governor. Both
candidates have faced hard-hitting questions from the media,
political pundits, and constituents, yet this year they may
have encountered their hardest
audience to date—students.
Enter Face the Students, a
program that allows middle
school and high school students across the state of Virginia to write questions for
the gubernatorial candidates.
Beginning September 1, students began submitting questions to an online posting
forum. They could post questions to each of the following
five categories: economy, education, family, healthcare, and
immigration. The questions
needed to be general enough
so that both candidates could
answer but specific enough to
pinpoint an issue.
This is the program’s second
year, following the 2012
Senate campaign of Republican George Allen and Democrat Tim Kaine.
Jamie Somerville, 12thgrade government teacher at
Middlesex High School, felt
the program was a good learning opportunity because it got
the students thinking. “It was
interesting to hear the students
reflect on what was important,”
he said. “They came up with
really profound stuff.”
St. Clare Walker Middle
School 8th-graders taking
Annie Somerville’s civics and
economics class were encouraged to draft questions using
higher level thinking verbs from
Bloom’s Taxonomy, an educational classification system
of desired student objectives.
Students were asked to reach
beyond basic open-ended questions and use advanced verbs,
such as evaluate, interpret,
judge and construct, to phrase
more meaningful questions.
After several rounds of
voting at both the school and
division level, several St. Clare
Walker students had their questions advance to the state level.
Cole Radabaugh’s question in
the education category asked
candidates to consider increasing funding for technology in
schools, specifically referenc-
ing outdated computers.
“I chose that question
because it really is ridiculous
that we have computers from
1995. I don’t think schools get
enough funds,” Radabaugh
said.
Fellow classmate Emilie
Smith posed a question in the
economy category about the
effect of taxes on Virginia residents and how politicians can
work to reduce governmental
debt.
“It was difficult to write
a quality question and not a
bland question,” Smith said.
“It had to make it through the
levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy.”
Other 8th-grade students
with advancing questions were
Manuel Fernandez for his
question on immigration, and
Hannah Marx for her question
on healthcare.
In the end, the five winning
questions at the statewide level
were submitted by high school
students from Rustburg High
and Colonial Heights High.
Specific topics for the winning questions included the
educational impact of SOL
testing, acceptance rates of
minorities in public universities, legalization of marijuana,
rights of teenagers to receive
abortions, and current and
future job growth in Virginia.
Students across the state can
view videos of the candidates’
answers via the website.
“I fully plan on continuing
this program in other election
years,” Somerville said. “It
definitely got the competitive
juices flowing.”

MHS wins statewide seatbelt challenge
Middlesex High School and
Forest Middle School in Bedford County are the statewide
winners of the 2013 “Save Your
Tail-Gate, Buckle Up” (SYT)
campaign sponsored by Youth
of Virginia Speak Out About
Traffic Safety (YOVASO), the
Virginia State Police Association, and the Allstate Foundation.
Middlesex placed first in the
high school division and Forest
placed first in the middle school
division.
As the statewide winner
among high schools, Middlesex
High will receive a school-wide
celebration with free food,
music, prizes and games. Forest
will receive $500, a banner and
plaque for its first place win
among middle schools.
All prizes for the “Save Your
Tail-Gate” campaign were
funded by a $10,000 grant from
the Allstate Foundation. The
grant also funded additional
campaign materials.
“The Allstate Foundation
supports programs that have
the best potential for improving
the lives of youth in our local
communities,” said Shelva
Clemons, Allstate Foundation
spokesperson. “The ‘Save Your
Tail-Gate, Buckle Up” campaign is one of those programs.
This grant allows us to give
back in a manner that reflects
our commitment to the community.”
Fifty-eight schools participated in the annual campaign
that ran from September 16
to October 11. Winners were
selected based on the quality
and effectiveness of their campaign, including the impact
of educational and awareness activities, the percentage
increase in seat-belt use by
students, and the percentage of
students who signed the pledge
to always buckle up.
Among the schools that completed the campaign, seat belt
use increased an average of 10
percent, based on pre and post
seat-belt checks at each school.
At first-place Middlesex High,
seat belt use increased 8%—
from 80% during the pre-survey to 88% in the final survey.
“The goal of the campaign is
to make buckling up a habit for
everyone,” said Sarah Watson,
YOVASO Program Development Coordinator.

New website
to cover tri-county
political news
Ken Wilt, a Middlesex
County resident and creator
and publisher of DeltavillleDaily.com, has launched a new
website to cover political news
of the tri-county region: MiddlePeninsulaMonitor.com.
Wilt says the website is an
effort to provide citizens with
timely and accurate information on public meetings and
issues that are not getting the
attention they deserve in the
mainstream media.
DeltavilleDaily.com
has
been re-vamped as well, said
Wilt. Because the political
issues are being moved to the
new site, DeltavilleDaily.com
will focus on promoting the
Rivah lifestyle and all things
Deltaville.

church
Urbanna Baptist to celebrate 125th year
Urbanna Baptist Church invites friends in
the community to join in celebrating its 125th
anniversary and homecoming on Sunday,
November 10. The celebration will include a
reenactment during the 11 a.m. service, a ham
and oyster luncheon, and a tribute to the man
who designed and built the local landmark in
1896.
According to Urbanna Baptist Church,
1888-2003, A Little Church with a Large
Ministry, written by local resident and church
member Evelyn Q. Ryland, the small congregation first met to begin organizing on November
11, 1888. Eight years later it had completed
and occupied the central portion of the church
that continues in use today.
A famous Baptist preacher in those days,
Dr. William Elderidge Hatcher, was called in
to deliver the first sermon in the new building. On November 10, reenactor Dr. Fred
Anderson, executive director of the Virginia
Baptist Historical Society, will take on the
role of Dr. Hatcher as part of the anniversary
celebration.
The 1896 church was designed and built
by Charles H. Palmer, a charter member who
learned the carpentry trade while working for
several years in New York state. He also built
many of the Victorian homes in Urbanna. At 2
p.m., his contributions will be recalled by his
great-grandson, Larry S. Chowning, who lives
in Palmer’s house across the street from the
church. A marble plaque in Palmer’s honor, to
be erected in the old portion of the church, will
be unveiled.
Everyone is welcome to participate in these
events. Reservations for the luncheon should be
made by calling the church office at 758-2720
or emailing [email protected]
before noon on Monday, November 4.
