Former NFL All-Pro

MHS Football Camp
The two-day Middlesex High
School Football Camp will be held
Monday and Tuesday, July 16-17, at
MHS in Saluda.
On Tuesday, July 17, former NFL
All-Pro running back Chris Warren
will be at the camp along with his
renowned Ferrum College coach,
Hank Norton of Deltaville.
The camp is for boys and girls ages
6-14 and campers may still register at
7:30 a.m. on Monday at the camp, or
by calling Tommy Hamilton at 804815-6254. The fee is $15.
A contingent of former college
coaches, an NFL scout, and a number
of current local high school coaches
and players will be on hand to teach
the fundamentals of football to the
campers. Attention will be given to
teaching proper techniques for each
position. There will be a motivational
speaker each day, and at the end of the
two-day camp each camper will be
awarded a t-shirt.
Campers should dress in a t-shirt
and shorts and cleats. Water and
snacks will be provided. The camp
begins at 8:30 a.m. both days.
Proceeds will be used to help support the Middlesex Colts Youth Football Association.
Chris Warren first played at the
University of Virginia but transferred
and played two years under Coach
Norton at Ferrum College. In 1989,
the Ferrum team featuring Warren
and Coach Norton finished third in
the Division III national playoffs.
Drafted by the Seattle Seahawks
in the 4th round of the 1990 draft,
Warren played 11 years in the NFL,
was selected to three Pro Bowls, and
rushed for a total of 7,696 yards,
caught passes for 1,935 yards, and
scored 58 touchdowns.
He also played for the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles later in
his career.
Warren rushed for over 1,000 yards
in four consecutive seasons (1992-95)
with the Seahawks, with a season-best
1,545 yards in 1994.
Norton coached Ferrum to National

T. Crump, King lead Deltas past 61s;
to host Hampton Braves Friday night
by Stephen Blue
The Deltaville Deltas had some
offensive fireworks of their own in
capturing a pair of victories last weekend—twice putting up 14 runs against
the VBA 61’s.
The Deltas defeated the 61’s by
scores of 14-4 and 14-1, improving
their record to 11-5 in Southern Virginia Baseball League (SVBL) play,
and 12-6 overall.
This weekend, Deltaville hosts the
Hampton Braves on Friday, July 13, at
7:30 p.m. on Rudy’s Pizza Night.
On Saturday, July 14, the Southern
Virginia Baseball League All-Star
Game and Home Run Derby will
be held at Deltaville Ballpark. The
league’s top sluggers will blast off at
4 p.m., with the All-Stars facing off at
7 p.m.
Deltaville 14, 61’s 4
Travis Crump blasted a pair of home
runs, including a 6th-inning grand
slam, as the Deltas downed the 61’s,
14-4.
After the 61’s took an early 1-0 lead,
T. Crump drove in the first of his 6
RBIs for the Deltas on a 2nd-inning
RBI double to tie the game at 1-1.
The Deltaville offense took advantage of erratic pitching in the 3rd
inning, taking a 2-1 lead before loading
the bases for Chris King, the Deltas’
2011 home run leader. King blasted a
grand slam to break the game open.
Not to be outdone, T. Crump followed with a solo shot of his own to
extend the advantage to 7-1.
The 61’s closed the gap to 7-4 until
the 6th inning when Deltaville went
on another scoring rampage. Once
again the Deltas scored a run and then
loaded the bases, but this time it was T.
Crump blasting the second grand slam
of the night for the Deltas.
T. Crump finished 3-for-3 at the
plate, leading all hitters with 2 home
runs and 6 RBIs. King was 2-for-3 with
4 RBIs, and Alexander Crittenden also
had a 2-for-3 night and scored a pair of
runs. Scott Crump also added 3 runs
and 2 RBIs on a 1-for-2 night while
drawing a pair of walks.
Jay Moore earned his 4th win in as
many starts for the Deltas, allowing 4
runs (3 earned) over 6 innings. Robert
Shermer pitched a scoreless 7th in
relief.
Deltas 14, 61’s 1
On Sunday in Yorktown, Deltaville’s
offense took a quick 2-0 lead, and
that’s all pitcher Smiley Smith needed.
Smith pitched 5 shutout innings, allowing only one baserunner past 1st base
en route to his 2nd win of the season.
The Deltas gave Smith a whole
lot more help, however. Deltaville
extended the lead to 4-0 in the 5th,

site of the Southern Virginia

then plated 7 runs in the 6th and 3
more in the 7th to tally 14 runs for the
second consecutive game.
Catcher Ryan Reynolds was highly
effective at the plate, scoring 4 times
on 2-for-2 hitting. Luke Kirk also
had a 2-for-4 day, and 8 other hitters contributed hits to the offensive
onslaught.
Smith scattered 4 hits over his 5
innings, and did not walk a batter.
Zach Jones allowed a run in 2 innings
of relief work on the mound.

If you do go fishing, make sure
you use plenty of sunscreen
and drink plenty of water.
Flounder fishermen continue
to hit or miss, but that’s flounder fishing. At the Cell/Buoy
#42 area there have been days
when 8 to 10 flounder per boat
are being caught, and then the
next day—zilch.
There have been reports
of flounder catches in the
Rappahannock, especially in
the area just east of the Norris
Bridge on the north side of the
river. Drifting across the sharp
drop-offs from 15-50 feet of
water should produce good
results. Anglers stopping by

Captain Tom Narron (804370-7394) on the charter boat

Captain Don Bannister (804436-7715) on the charter boat

are the bait of choice for the

There are some Spanish
mackerel being caught in the
nets off Windmill Point, and
there have been a few caught
on Windmill Bar on hook and
line. Typically, August 1 is the
date when they show up in large
schools, but given the recent
rise in water temperature (there
is some benefit to this heat), we
may see some early arrivals. It
should not be long.

Library Lottery
tickets on sale
The “Library Lottery” to
benefit the Middlesex County
Library is well under way. Tickets are $25 each, or 5 for $100,
and the winner stands to win
up to $15,000. Because only a
limited number of tickets are
being sold, the odds for winning
are much better than other lotteries.
The drawing will be on September 1 at “Groovin in the
Park” at Holly Point Nature
Park in Deltaville, but you do
not have to be present to win.
Just make sure that your name,
phone number and mailing
address are on the ticket stub so
you can receive your winnings!
Tickets are now available at
two new locations, in addition
to the businesses listed in last
week’s paper. Gone Coastal
and Latitudes, both on General
Puller Highway in Deltaville,
now have tickets on sale. Of
course tickets are available at
both the Urbanna and Deltaville
branches of the library, and on
Saturday, July 14, tickets will
be sold at the Urbanna Farmers’
Market and at a table in front of
the Deltaville Market.
This is a great opportunity
to help support the library and
have a good shot at a nice pot.
A lottery ticket (or a packet of
tickets) also makes a nice present. But you can’t win unless
you buy a ticket!
Emergency need for
blood donations exists
Blood drive
is Tuesday
in Deltaville
In June, blood donations were
down more than 10% across
the country, 50,000 fewer pints
than expected, leaving almost
half the amount that was available at this time last year. Support is greatly needed for the
Middlesex Bloodmobiles.
The American Red Cross
(ARC) has new plans for
recruiting donors, and will
begin making calls before and
after blood drives. Donors can
choose preferred method of
contact (phone call, e-mail,
post card) or none at all.
In view of this new policy,
the Local Phone Reminder
Service in Deltaville will be
discontinued. Callers will contact all 160 regular donors with
this new information. Notifica-
tion of each of the five annual
drives in Deltaville will appear
in the Southside Sentinel.
Donors also may call the Red
Cross office in Kilmarnock at
1-804-435-7669. Members of
the rescue squad auxiliary also
know the dates and can be contacted at 776-6875.
The next blood drive in
Deltaville will be Tuesday, July
17, at the rescue squad building, and the final blood drive
for 2012 will be on October
16.
Dates for 2013 will be set
later this year for January,
March, May, July and October.
It is usually held during the
third week of the month. The
effort to schedule upper and
lower county drives nine weeks
apart allows Middlesex donors
to use either one and be 56 days
from last donation.
Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs
a blood transfusion. Each pint
donated can help three people.

Heritage Day in Deltaville
was sizzling hot. Instead of
greeting people “Hello,” it was
“Is it hot enough for you?”
Even though the storm
the night before blew down

Pet Parade was not as large
as usual because of the heat.
Children of all ages turned
out with their pets. Madeline

Not sure who won but my personal favorite was the baby
pot-bellied pig. Sharon Mallory stepped up to the plate at
the last minute to judge and
her husband agreed to be the
announcer. Gina Custis gave
Dano’s gift certificates to the
winners of the Pet Parade as
well as the Children’s Parade.
The day ended with a threering circus. The ball game
and Old-Timers Game was
going on, a storm was rolling
in with spectacular lightning,
and because of the storm, the
fireworks went off early. Do
not know if the folks in the
ballpark enjoyed it all, but
the folks sitting in the nearby
graveyard enjoyed it. The finale
there was a smashing show of
lightning and fireworks and a
swift exit to the cars.

Hands Across Middlesex,
through the Backpack Buddy
program, distributes backpacks full of a weekend supply
of food to students during the
school year at the elementary
and middle schools who are
selected for this program by
school administrators. Now
that school is out, these same
students, some who also participate in the free breakfast
and lunch program during the
school year, are at home for
summer vacation without these
vital sources of food.
The Hands Food Pantry is
now providing Summer Backpacks to these eligible students
on food distributions days, the
second and fourth Tuesdays of
each month. The family must
first register to be a client of
Hands. That process involves
presenting proof of residence
in Middlesex County, proof of
income for all household members and a picture ID. Once
this documentation has been
received, the student will be
eligible to pick up a Summer
Backpack on food distribu-
tions days. The next food distribution day will be July 24.
No child in Middlesex
County should be without adequate food during the summer
vacation. Donations to help pay
for the food for this Summer
Backpack program can be
made by sending a check to
Hands Across Middlesex and
writing on the memo line:
Backpack Buddy Program.
The Hands Board of Directors will meet on Sunday, July
15, at 3:30 p.m. at Clarksbury
United Methodist Church on
Route 33 in Deltaville. All
board members are urged to
attend.
