Mariners capture second straight VBL title
by Gary Williams
The Middle Peninsula Mariners (19-2, 14-2) defeated the
Tappahannock Tides 8-4 Sunday
to claim their second straight
Virginia Baseball League
(VBL) championship.
With the playoff wins, Middle
Peninsula finished with a bestever 19-2 season record.
“I’m very proud of our players this season” said Mariners
manager Garland Harrow.”
They played hard all summer
and made it a whole lot of fun.”
VBL president Paul Sanders congratulated the Mariners
after the championship game.
“I would like to congratulate the
Middle Peninsula Mariners on
another championship season of
VBL baseball. Garland Harrow
and Gary Williams continue
to do a superb job with their
players and creating such an
exciting atmosphere for all to
experience. Working with these
two men sure makes my job as
president much easier.
“I also give a big hat’s
off to Trent Carson and the
Tappahannock Tides,” said
Sanders. “Best of luck to these
two teams, their coaches and
players during the off season,
and I look forward to an even
greater year in 2010.”
Mariners 6, Tigers 1
The Mariners began their
playoff run with a 6-1 victory
over the Tappahannock Tigers
on Saturday.
Mariners first baseman Bryan
Hannum pushed across Middle
Peninsula’s first run with an RBI
single in the second inning, but
Tappahannock tied the game
1-1.
Middle Peninsula woke up the
bats in the bottom of the fourth,
scoring 3 runs on 2 hits and a
walk. James Bierlein started the
inning with a walk and Greg
Mitro followed with a double. A
sacrifice fly from Scott Crump
and a double from Hannum
game the Mariners a 4-1 advantage.
Travis Crump extended the
lead when he singled home
Ryan Reynolds and later scored
on a passed ball.

The Mariners quickly regained
the lead in the third inning on a

local bowling record
Hannah Harris, 17 a rising
senior at Middlesex High
School. had an outstanding
bowling series recently in the
Monday Junior/Senior Youth
League at Village Lanes.
Harris, whose previous high
series was a very respectable 731,
started July 27, with a nice 245
game. The strikes kept coming in
the second game for a 256 game,
which included a stretch of 9
strikes in a row. However, Harris
saved the best for last. Starting with a spare, she reeled off
another 9 in a row closing with a
9 spare for a 279 game. Her total
for the series was an incredible
780. (The best possible threegame series score is 900.)
Harris and all those in attendance knew this was the highest
series bowled by a youth—male
or female—at Village Lanes
this year. As the days went by
the significance of this accomplishment grew. Further checking with Village Lanes manager
Edna Woodard revealed that
this was most likely the highest
series ever bowled by a youth at
Village Lanes.
The news got even bigger
when Mary Pancoast, head
of the Peninsula High School
Bowling League, stated that
in her 20 years of involvement
with youth bowling, Harris
recorded the highest series ever
bowled by a female youth in the
Peninsula area.
Finally, after checking with
the Hampton USBC Women’s
Bowling Association, only a

Deltas fall in extra innings
by Stephen Blue
The Deltaville Deltas finished their 2009 campaign on Sunday afternoon, putting up a long
fight that took two days to complete. However, it
wasn’t enough, and the Deltas fell to the Peninsula Cardinals 4-2 Sunday afternoon.
The game started on Saturday night, and was
tied 0-0 after the first three innings. Heavy rain
set in, however, and the game was postponed
until Sunday afternoon.
On Sunday, the Cardinals struck first, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the 5th inning.
Deltaville immediately responded in the bottom
half of the inning, when Brett Crawford smacked
a 2-run single to score Ryan Wiggins and Jimmy
Denny.
Deltaville missed two scoring opportunities
in the 7th and 8th innings, including loading the
bases in the 8th; however, they were unable to
get a key 2-out hit.
After completing the regulation 9 innings in a
2-2 tie, the Cardinals plated 2 runs in the top of
the 10th inning to take a 4-2 lead.
Deltaville attempted to respond in the bottom
of the 10th, when Luke Saunders led the inning
off with a single. Two other batters reached on
fielder’s choices, however, the Deltas couldn’t
pull off the comeback.
Deltaville was led offensively by Jimmy
Denny, who collected 2 doubles and a single.
Brett Crawford and Luke Saunders each had
2 singles, and Ryan Wiggins, Tim Grandy and
Chris Williams had a single apiece.
Jonathon Somers started on the mound on
Saturday night and was relieved on Sunday by
Jay Moore.
The Cardinals went on to beat the Gloucester
Astros on Sunday night, 8-7, for their 5th straight
win of the tournament to set up a Monday night
winner-take-all game with the defending champions. Gloucester then reigned supreme for the
second consecutive year, nabbing the league
championship with a 1-0 victory.
The 2009 season was one of the most competitive seen in the Southern Virginia Baseball
League, with five of the six league teams garnering 10 or more wins.
The Deltas extend many thanks to the fans for
their support during the exciting season.
Photos and end of season statistics are available on the Deltas website DeltavilleDeltas.com.
Area sportscaster Demetrius
Means of Kilmarnock will be
the sideline reporter for Old
Dominion University football
games for the 2009 season,
the Sports Talent Agency of
America (STAA) announced
last week.
ODU is reinstating its football program after nearly 30
years without the sport. The
team will compete at the FCS
(NCAA I-AA) level. Means
will be employed by CBS

which
retained STAA to screen applicants for the sideline position
and for their recently filled
play-by-play position.
In addition to his duties as
sideline reporter, Means will
host a segment on the Monarchs Network pre-game show
and will handle post-game
interviews with players and
coaches.
“This has been eight years
in the making, of looking to go
to another level,” said Means.
“I’m really looking forward to
being the best sideline reporter
I can be by doing a lot of
research and being very informative to the listener. I love
radio and I have a passion and

“WKWI radio has been the
foundation of my career,” said
Means. “That’s where it all
started in 1996. Former general managers C.D. Hathaway

are the ones who gave me my

increased self-esteem, confidence, courage, pride, imagination, excitement and creativity.
Each child also receives a
backpack stuffed with school
supplies. The supplies are
donated by YMCA members
and local area businesses and
purchased in bulk with monetary donations made to Bright
Beginnings.
“YMCA Bright Beginnings
is just that—a beginning,” said
Peninsula Metropolitan YMCA
president Rob Shuford Jr., executive vice president and COO
of Old Point National Bank and
president of the YMCA Board
of Directors. “There are countless YMCA Bright Beginnings
experiences that lead the youths
to basketball in the winter, day
camp in the summer, or teen
leadership development. Some
parents discover the benefits
of YMCA financial assistance
and register for child care or a
family membership. And there
are even former YMCA Bright
Beginnings recipients now
giving back as volunteers and
donors.”
Students are referred to
YMCA Bright Beginnings
through social services. The
children must only promise to
do their best in school; there is
no charge to participate.
“This is an amazing opportunity for volunteers to see firsthand the difference they can
make in the lives of these children. It really proves that one
person can make a difference,”
said Danny Carroll, CEO of the
Peninsula Metropolitan YMCA.
Individuals wishing to help
may do so in the following
ways:
• Donate. A financial contribution of $150 sends one
child on a shopping trip where
he or she will receive clothes
and a backpack full of school
supplies. Businesses, churches
and clubs may choose to sponsor several children or a whole
shopping trip.
• Become a Backpack Buddy.
Purchase a backpack and/or
supplies and drop it off at the
Middlesex Family YMCA.
The Middlesex YMCA is a
501(c)(3) charitable organization serving thousands of
people each year. The generosity of many businesses and
individuals makes financial
assistance available so everyone who wants to participate
may do so.
Masonic scholarship recipients
Donovan Masonic Lodge #75 of Deltaville recently awarded
four $1,000 scholarships. At the awards presentation above
are, from left, lodge worshipful master Tyler Crittenden,
scholarship recipients Maria Crittenden, Stephanie Montgomery, Bailey Harrow and Maggie Ballantyne, and lodge
member Jimmie Johnson, chairman of the Scholarship Committee.
ymca basketball
As the season winds to an
end, the Middlesex Family
YMCA is proud to announce
the success of its adult basketball season and looks forward
to continuing the success with
adult sports with the second
year of adult co-ed softball. On August 5, the Farm
Bureau Clippers took on the
Dr. Suyes D.D.S. Cavaliers. The Cavaliers got off to a fast
start, but after an injury forced
the team to play with only four
players the Clippers began
marching back and getting into
the game. In the end, the Cavaliers were able to win 75-41. The Cavaliers were led by the
shooting talents of Tammy Burrell and Maurice Ackes, while
the Clippers remained in the
game thanks to the defense of
Joe Lyford and Mikail Ubietta. The second game featured
back to school

the Harrow’s Home Center Nets
and the Wells Fargo Advisors
Bobcats. Both teams played
incredible games, but the youth
and physical play of the Nets
propelled them to a 72-52 win. The Nets were led by Mike
Epps and Butchie Bagby, who
were dominating under the
basket, while DA Belcher and
Moose Benson were on fire
from outside of the arc. The
Bobcats played a great game
in their own right, John Waite
and Zeb Burrell were forces
to be reckoned with under the
basketball, and Johnny Duke
and Jerry Duke led the team in
scoring both inside and outside
of the arc. “I think the league continues
to improve. I think there are
some areas of opportunity to
grow and get better, but all and
all I think the league has run
well and the participants have
been a pleasure to serve,” said
Clark Laster, program director.
The final game featured the
Marshall’s Drug Store Magic
and Walden Construction Hornets. The Hornets were led by
the shooting touch of Antonio
Felds and Heather Collier Longest as they won 80-64. Please keep Jason Wake in
your thoughts as he injured his
knee driving to the basket late
in the first half. The Magic were led by the
shooting expertise of Becca
Panis and Boogey Jackson. The teams continue to get better
and we look forward to a great
end-of-season tournament on
August 19. All are welcome to
attend the event as the championship will begin at 8 p.m. Call
776-8846 for information.

middlesex sheriff’s report
On July 15 at 10:15 p.m., Lt.
J.H. Ellis was on routine patrol
traveling westbound on Route 33
in Locust Hill when he came upon
a Nissan traveling in front of him.
Ellis noticed the vehicle was weaving from the left lane to the right
lane, all the while the vehicle’s left
turn signal was activated. After several episodes of the driver applying
brakes and then speeding up, Lt.
Ellis activated his emergency lights
and siren and pulled the vehicle
over near River Birch Nursery. The
driver, a 34-year-old Locust Hill
man, was subsequently arrested for
DUI. When the driver stepped from
his vehicle, Ellis observed in plain
view on the console of the vehicle
a plastic baggie containing a green
leafy plant based substance. The
man told Ellis it was marijuana. He
was issued a summons for possession of marijuana and the confiscated drug was sent to the lab for
identification.
The Sheriff’s Office is investigating a theft from a residence in
Hartfield. On July 16, a Scoggins
Creek Trail homeowner called to
report that some firearms that had
previously been in the residence
were now unaccounted for, as well
as some other items of value. Sgt.
B.M. Burrell is investigating.
Deputy Jason Hall took a report
from a Point Ann Drive homeowner
on July 19 who reported that a
red Dagger brand kayak had been
stolen. The kayak was last seen by
the owner on July 18. Anyone with
information on this theft is asked to
call the Middlesex Crime Line at
804-758-5600.
Two juveniles were issued summonses for underage possession of
alcohol and were released to their
parents in the early morning hours
of July 19. Deputies A.J. Miller
and N.M. Sibley III were watching early morning traffic on Route
33 in Hartfield when their attention was called to two vehicles
that had repeatedly entered, left,
and returned to the parking lot of
a Hartfield convenience store in a
short time span. Miller arrested an
adult male he observed walking
from the driver side of one vehicle
to the second vehicle. The 49-yearold Hartfield man was unsteady on
his feet and had an odor of alcohol.
The man refused to take a PBT test,
but the two juvenile males in the
party, both 16 years of age, submitted to the testing and were found
to have consumed alcohol. Miller
charged the Hartfield man with
appearing drunk in public and two
counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
A Healys Road resident contacted the Sheriff’s Office on July
21 to report that two inoperable
vehicles she had a buyer for had
been vandalized. Sgt. Burrell took
a report on the theft of the catalytic
converters from two vehicles that
had been parked on the premises.
Evidence indicated that the parts
had been cut from the undercarriage
of the automobiles at two different
times. The theft was discovered by
the potential new owner when he
was checking the cars over prior
to purchase. The incident is under
investigation.
On July 21 just after 4 p.m., a Topping resident called 911 to report
a hit-and-run that had happened
minutes earlier on the roadside of
Route 3 near the Robert Norris
Bridge. The suspect was identified
by the caller and he was able to give
a description and the license plate
number of the truck that had struck
his vehicle. Deputies met with the
victim and witnesses to the incident and a “be on the lookout” was
dispatched on the sheriff’s radio
as well as SIRS (Statewide Informational Radio System, a low-ban
frequency radio that allows neighboring agencies to communicate).
SIRS is also monitored by patrolling State troopers on the Middle
Peninsula and Northern Neck. The
suspect had his 2-year-old son in
the truck with him and reportedly
was in possession of a weapon that
he had brandished during the incident. Lt. J.H. Ellis and Sgt. M.E.
Epperly located the suspect vehicle
and its owner at a mobile home park
in Hartfield within a few minutes
of the original call. Deputy Ben
Langford left the victim and witnesses in Topping after collecting
statements and responded to where
Ellis and Epperly had placed the
suspect, 25-year-old Alfred Franke
of Mathews, in investigative detention. Franke was transported to the
Sheriff’s Office where he appeared
by video in front of the regional
magistrate. Langford charged
Franke with felony hit-and-run,
brandishing a firearm, felony child
endangerment, assault and battery,
and driving with an expired drivers license. Franke was remanded
to the MPRSC on a $7,500 secure
bond.
On July 24, the management
staff for Taylor’s Restaurant in
Deltaville discovered upon opening
that morning that the business had
been burglarized. The establishment appeared to have been entered
after a window was smashed out.
The incident is under investigation.
On July 31 just after 6 p.m., a
motorist on Stampers Bay Road in
Hartfield discovered a single-vehicle accident. The caller stated that a
Geo Metro had been found flipped
over and there was no one in the
area. At the same time, the owner
of a Geo Metro called the Sheriff’s Office to report that their car
had been stolen from The Galley
Restaurant parking lot. Deputies arrived and stood by with the
overturned car until Virginia State
Police and a tow truck arrived on
the scene. Virginia State Police are
investigating.

Ashton Vaudt of Hardyville
displays his Locks of Love.
Student donates
to Locks of Love
Ashton Vaudt, full-time student at Shenandoah University, recently came home to
Hardyville during his summer
break and asked his mother,
Peggy, to cut his hair. This
would be his first haircut in over
two years. His mother happily
complied with his request and
sheared off his 14-inch locks.
That hair has since become
a donation to Locks of Love, a
non-profit organization based
in West Palm Beach, Fla., that
helps financially disadvantaged
children throughout the U.S.
and Canada suffering from
long-term medical hair loss.
Vaudt said he had two reasons for the haircut request:
it was hot and he was using
too much shampoo. Vaudt is a
member of Clarksbury United
Methodist Church where his
father is pastor.
Crash claims life, injures child
A Colonial Beach woman
died on Tuesday, August 4,
about four hours after a rollover crash on Route 17, just
south of the Middlesex-Gloucester county line, according to
Virginia State Police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Cotton.
Susan Joyce Wright, 38, was
airlifted to the Medical College
of Virginia, where she died following surgery.
According to police, Wright
was traveling north on Route
17 about 7:30 p.m. when she
ran off the right side of the road,
struck several signs and overturned. Wright, who was wearing a seat belt, and a 2-year-old
child, who was in a child seat,
were trapped in the Kia.
The child was flown by helicopter from Riverside Walter
Reed Hospital in Gloucester
to Riverside Regional Medical
Center in Newport News. The
child’s condition is unknown.

I wish I had the gift of gab,
but I’m a “give me the facts”
kind of person. The fact is, it’s
summertime and it’s hot and
it’s hard to get motivated to
clean up around the gardens.
However, we have enjoyed
the help of our interns this
summer, but they are leaving
and we wish them well. So it’s
back to “Return of the Gardenerds” on Tuesday, September
1. We need some motivation
and enthusiasm, and hope that
some like-minded people with
“plant passion” will come and
help further the park’s mission
to provide a great community
place to relax and learn.
Just a reminder, the next Farmer’s Market is Saturday, August
22, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the
Groovin’ in the Park concert is
the same day from 6 to 8 p.m.
The market will be the largest
to date with over 40 vendors. The fact is, that’s all I have
for now, and it’s on to the guy
with the gab . . .
Even the dog days of summer
failed to stifle the enthusiasm of
our kayakers last weekend. They
got to see Jackson Creek up
close and personal—a unique
perspective characteristic of the
kayak.
Thanks to Jackie Willis
(Poopsie) for heading up our
little outing. If you enjoyed the
two-hour tour, why not sign up
for a Dragon Run adventure?
We’ve tentatively made plans to
have Jackie take a group on the
Dragon—a place right here in
Middlesex that hasn’t changed
since Indian days. Call the
museum at 776-7200 if you are
interested in this trip, probably
a Saturday in late September.
More details to come.
Speaking of dogs, I guess they
are the new children. A wellbehaved dog is loyal, friendly
and responds to attention. Most
even poop outside! Personally
I’ll take kids with all their disappointments. Seeing children
respond to boat building, for
example, is mighty rewarding.
We just updated the “Boats for
Sale” on our website at www.
deltavilleva.com/museumpark
(thanks Pat). The donated craft
are now rearranged at the Field
of Dreams so we can launch
your new boat at a moment’s
notice. We are actively seeking
new donations of vessels and
vehicles. Give the Kaptain a call
at 804-815-3121 to arrange a
donation.
The engine for the “Crockett”
has arrived at the boat shop for
a rattle-can rebuild. Our ubiquitous diesel man, Henry Lackey,
will bless this old 671 (made
back when GM meant something) before we put her to bed
in the “Crockett.” Stop by and
see the excitement build!
