MHS hosts Lancaster tonight; Indians on Saturday
The Essex Trojans showed
why they are one of the favorites to win the Northern Neck
District with a 68-40 win over
Middlesex in Saluda Monday
night.
The Trojans spread the floor
on the Chargers and used their
quickness and sharp passing to
jump to a 38-24 halftime lead.
On the defensive end,
Essex’s tight man-to-man
defense stymied the Middlesex
offense and limited the Chargers to only 13 field goals in
the game.
Good defense by MHS
junior Michael Bess and others
held Essex standout guard John
Dillie to only 7 points, but the
rest of the Trojans took up the
slack.
Malcolm Ward and Bess,
the only two returning players off last year’s MHS team,
scored 29 of the Middlesex’s
40 points. Ward had 15, and
Bess scored 14.
The Chargers didn’t have a
3-point goal and were 14 of 23
at the free throw line.
The Trojans tallied 18 of
their points from behind the
3-point arc.
Also scoring for Middlesex
were senior forward Nigel Rich
with 5 points, Davonne Bryant
and Markus Hammond with 2
apiece, and Cody Hunter and
Sean Sutherlin with 1 point
each.

On Monday, the Middlesex
varsity girls basketball team
jumped on Essex early and
came home with a 69-46 nondistrict win.
The victory gave Middlesex
a 3-1 overall record. Their
only loss was 58-27 to James
Monroe in the James Monroe
Tip-Off Tournament championship game in Fredericksburg
on Saturday.
An aggressive Group AA
James Monroe team started
quick in the title game and
Middlesex was not ready, said
MHS coach William Griffin.
“Their guards were too fast for
us,” he said. “We were in awe
of them. We missed some open
opportunities, we were flat, and
they were going after everything.”
Middlesex was held to two
field goals in the first half and
trailed 31-8 at the half.
The Lady Chargers got their
composure back in second half
and scored 19 points.
“It’s better to get a game
like this behind us early in the
season,” said Griffin. “I know
we will regroup and will be
ready to play Group A teams.”
Micah Reed led Middlesex
with 8 points. Ashae Burnett
had 7, Brown 3, Katrina Reed
5, Kiersten Baylor 2, and
Megan Payne 1.
Middlesex had defeated
Group AA Louisa 56-55 in the
first round of the tourney on
Dec. 3.
The Lady Chargers led the
entire game and had a 5-point
lead after three quarters. However, turnovers kept Louisa in
the game.
Burnett
led
Middlesex
with 21 points, and Kimberly
Ammons tallied 19. Brown
added 5 points, M. Reed 4, K.
Reed, Baylor and Payne had
2 each, and Whitney Walton
made a free throw.
Lancaster lost to James
Monroe 65-49 in the first round
and defeated Louisa 53-31 in
the consolation game.
MHS 69, Essex 46
Against Essex on Monday,
the Lady Chargers bolted to a
20-10 lead in the first period
and was ahead 38-21 at the
half.
Every girl got in the game
and nine players scored for
Middlesex.
Ashae Burnett led with 26
points and 15 rebounds, Micah
Reed had 13 points and 12
rebounds, Katrina Reed had
9 points, Brianna Brooks 5,

the final period.
The more experienced Indians pulled away in the fourth
period and won 59-51.

‘Ware Academy Singers’ debut
at historic Lansdowne in Urbanna
In October about 30 Ware
Academy students tried out for
the Ware Academy Choir and
were titled the “Ware Academy
Singers.” Fifteen students made
the cut.
The unique thing about this
is that academy choir director
Aaron Ward was in the Ware
Academy Singers back when he
attended Ware in the late 1980s.
Last Sunday, the Ware Academy Singers went caroling.
Their first stop was historic
Lansdowne in Urbanna at 1
p.m. where they sang numerous
Christmas carols, as well as “Hot
Chocolate” and “When Christmas Comes to Town” from the
movie “Polar Express.”
This was a preview of the
school’s holiday program set for
Friday, Dec. 19, at 10 a.m.
The choir’s second stop
was in front of Tabb House at
Gloucester Court House.
Last Sunday’s caroling expedition was the group’s singing
debut—the first of many performances to come. Ward hopes
to book this elite group at various local venues for the entire
community to enjoy. Ward said,
“The students did a fantastic
job Sunday. I couldn’t think
of a better way to kick off the
holiday season. The students
displayed incredible talent and
spirit!”

Rotary . . . (Continued from page B6)
She explained how the nature
of volunteerism has changed
as the family structure has
changed. With two wage earners in most families, much of
the volunteering has shifted to
retirees.
She made us aware of a
number of organizations that
can always use volunteers:
Christmas Friends Inc., volunteer fire and rescue squads
and their auxiliaries, a group
at Grafton Baptist Church that
runs an after-school program,
the Deltaville Community
Association (DCA) and its offshoot, the Maritime Museum
and Holly Point Nature Park,
the YMCA, Hands Across
Middlesex, Habitat for Humanity, and others as well. These
programs always need not only
volunteers, but money.
Mrs. Bridger, a native of
Middlesex County, has certainly used her time well in
the helping of worthy causes.
Among many other things, she
is a docent at the Deltaville
Maritime Museum, has run
building renovation projects
for Hands Across Middlesex,
delivered Thanksgiving dinners, and volunteered at the
YMCA.

Santa found not guilty

High School drama class production of the Christmas “Clausies” Awards, a satire on the
Emmys. Above, from left, the actors include attorney Evan LeFevre, prosecutor Jocie Rivera,

Avast me hearties !
It’s hayride/boatride time in
Deltaville! On Friday, Dec.
12, at close of business, come
down to the DCA building,
hopefully with ticket in hand,
to get your trip assignment.
Then off to the town dock on
a haywagon, winding your way
down Lovers Lane, lined with
luminaries and colorful Christmas lights.
Next comes boarding a deadrise party boat to tour Jackson
Creek, where beautiful homes
vie with one another for the
prettiest house. No recession
here, no skippy! Then back to
the dock, another hayride and
then a warm-up at the DCA
building—cookies and all. All
this fun for only $5!
The rain date is Saturday, but
let’s figure on a Friday event.
Dress warmly and local charm
will do the rest.
Get your tickets at NautiNell’s, J&W Seafood or NAPA.
We are going to try to bring “Iva
W.” over to the town dock, but
somebody drained the pool.
Santa’s Workshop Department—Stumped for local gifts
for fun seekers of all ages?
Why not give a commemorative DVD of our most historic
event, Captain John Smith’s
near death experience with a
stingray? Or how about a CD
of the original score from the
play? Or even a T-shirt with
original art? We still have a
few of these treasures left, so
pick them up at the DCA building on Friday.

a pep talk from the Kaptain.
All for only $50, which can be
applied towards a build slot. If
you don’t build with us, you
can keep all this info and we
keep the money, win-win!
I’ll see you all on the dock
this Friday. Don’t miss this
one!
Judith Flores of Mathews
captures sea-scaped colors and
textures through her mixed
mediums in her new collection, “Spiritual Journey,” now
on display at Edwards Bay &
River Properties in Deltaville.
Flores returned to her beloved
Mathews County after a long
span of sand, canvases and
exhibits in the Palm Beach area
of Florida. Currently between
instructing yoga and caring for
her family, she finds time to
create new pieces indigenous
to historic and coastal Virginia.
The public is invited to preview her work at Edwards Bay
& River Properties through
January.
Dementia is
program topic
The Northern Neck Middle
Peninsula Telehealth Consortium (NNMPTC) is sponsoring
a health education program for
the public. “Dementia: Recognizing the Signs and Enhancing Communication” will be
broadcast on Thursday, Dec.
18, from 2 to 3 p.m. at the
Middlesex Health Department
Please RSVP to Andrea Fricke
at 443-6286.
Chowning to lead
watermen’s discussion
Larry Chowning of Urbanna,
local historian and author of
several books on local fishing
industries, and the boats and
the people who work them, will
moderate a round-table discussion at the Mathews Maritime
Foundation/Museum on Thursday, Dec. 18, at 7 p.m. at the
Mathews Memorial Library.
The topic will be “young”
and “older” watermen, some
currently working and others
who are retired. The group will
discuss the watermen’s experiences and thoughts on how this
occupation is changing and
what that means for Mathews.
Robert Roland Hudgins,
retired from actively working
the bay although still very much
involved in making equipment
for watermen, A.J. Hurst and
Jimmy Godsey, who may be
considered “semi-retired,” will
add their perspective on what
life used to be like in the days
before high costs of this occupation and regulations have
influenced the watermen’s way
of making a living.
Godsey and Kerry Hall, both
“young” watermen, will share
their thoughts on current conditions and how they see their
futures. So many are going to
work on tugboats where a paycheck is predictable.
Chowning will have his books
available for purchase—always
appreciated for the information
they contain and references to
local families.
The Mathews Maritime
Foundation’s 2009 calendar
“Generations of Watermen”
also will be for sale. Refreshments will be served and all are
invited. For further information, call 725-4382.
Remembering past Christmases
Christy Hall stands by one of several goose feather Christmas trees she had on display at the Middlesex Art Guild
Gallery on Virginia Street last Saturday night. Hall filled the
building with old and new Christmas ornaments and memorabilia that she has collected over the years. Hall grew up in
Urbanna on Prince George Street. The “Christmas Through
The Years” exhibit continues through December 23.
