Chowning The Middlesex High School offense was unable to get untracked Monday night as the Chargers opened its varsity football regular season with a 14-2 loss at rival Mathews. The game was scheduled to be played Friday night but tropical storm Hanna forced the time change. Several other teams in the area played games on Thursday night to avoid Hanna. With 9:43 left in the first quarter, Middlesex stopped the Blue Devils on downs and forced a punt. The Chargers’ rush got to the punter and blocked the kick. A Mathews player fell on the ball and was tackled in the end zone by Charger linebacker Craig Connely for the two-point safety. “Our defense played an outstanding game,” said MHS head coach Heath Cockerham. “We just couldn’t seem to get it together on the offensive side of the ball.” Mathews answered the Chargers’ score with 4:09 left in the first quarter when Blue Devil running back P.J. Roye broke through the line and ran 80 yards for a touchdown. The Blue Devil’s second touchdown came in the third quarter after Middlesex fum- Middlesex wingback Sean Lee attempts to elude a Mathews defender. (Photo by Tom Chillemi) bled a punt attempt. The Charger punter fumbled the ball and the Blue Devils recovered it at the Middlesex 9 yard line. Mathews then scored on a 9-yard pass play. “That pretty much sealed the game for them,” said Coach Cockerham. “It just seemed to take the wind out of our sails and the offense . . . well, it just laid an egg the entire game.” One bright spot in the game for the Chargers was the offensive and defensive play of Nigel Rich. “He was all over the place,” said Cockerham. “Nigel played an outstanding game.” Rich ran for 54 yards on offense and had 12 solo tackles on defense. Malcolm Ward rushed for 38 yards, and Ronnie Watkins had 8 rushing yards. Sean Lee carried the ball 4 times for no yards. MHS sophomore quarterback Chuckie Morris played in his first varsity game. Morris was the Chargers’ JV quarterback the past two years. He had three passes intercepted and completed one pass in 10 attempts. Marcus Hammond caught the pass for 21 yards. Mathews had 190 rushing yards and 58 passing yards for a total of 248 yards. Roye rushed for 131 yards. Middlesex had 121 yards of offense with 88 yards rushing and 33 yards passing. The Chargers has six first downs compared to nine by the Blue Devils. MHS will travel to Lancaster this Friday to take on the Red Devils at 7 p.m. Lancaster is 1-1. The Devils lost 12-8 to Northumberland in their first game of the season and beat Charles City 40-30 on Thursday night. “We have a real challenge ahead of us coming off a short week,” said Cockerham. “Lancaster played last Thursday night and will be well rested.” MHS girls face 3 straight road matches The Middlesex High varsity volleyball team fought back to defeat visiting Rappahannock on September 3; lost a tight five-game match at Lancaster on September 4; and swept Rappahannock on September 8. On September 3 at Rappahannock, Middlesex lost the first game 25-15 before taking the next three games 26-24, 25-16 and 25-14. “Once again, we started slow, but quickly gained momentum,” said Lady Charger coach Jennifer Harrow. “My starters just couldn’t click during the first game.” Harrow made a few changes in the second game, and the Lady Chargers came alive. “Raquel Pierce’s enthusiasm on and off the court helps keep the team excited,” Harrow said. “She also had some great passes.” Ashley Figg, Kelsey Hainley, Danielle Montgomery and Megan Payne “helped pull Middlesex through the last three games with great serving,” said Harrow. Ashley Figg led the Lady Chargers with 14 points (3 aces), 5 assists and 4 kills. Megan Payne added 9 points (6 aces), 6 kills and 2 digs. Kelsey Hainley had 8 points (3 aces) and an assist. Danielle Montgomery had 7 points (2 aces), 2 digs, 7 kills and a block. Also for the Lady Chargers, Jamie Davis, 4 points (1 ace), 2 digs; Raquel Pierce, 3 points (1 ace); Maggie Hall, 2 aces, 1 dig; Chelsea Lewter, 4 points; Hayley Guess, 1 ace; Ashae Burnett, 1 kill; Kelly Purcell, 2 assists; and Lauren Figg, 1 dig. After losing the first and second games (25-20, 25-23) to Lancaster on September 4, Middlesex came back and won the next two games 25-22 and 25-19. Middlesex recovered from a slow start and got behind in the third game and it looked like it might be an early night for the Lady Chargers. “The girls were determined to win,” said Harrow. “They took the third game and breezed through the fourth working hard, communicating well, and being aggressive both offensively and defensively.” The Lady Chargers’ determination forced a showdown in game five. However, Middlesex didn’t sustain its momentum and lost 15-7. “We fell apart in the fifth game,” said Harrow. “We played like we were scared to lose instead of continuing with strong hits and serves. “Kelsey Hainley really had a great serving and hitting game,” Harrow said. “She was really pounding them down!” On Monday, Middlesex swept Rappahannock in three games, 25-11, 25-14 and 15-6. “The girls connected once again,” said Harrow. “They talked well and were able to set up our offense well. We still have some things to work on, but we are getting better each match. This game was an allover team effort.” Ashley Figg racked up 20 points (7 aces), 2 digs, 8 assists and a kill. Jamie Davis served for 11 straight points in the last game and tallied 14 points (4 aces), 3 digs and 2 kills. Maggie Hall had 4 points, 3 digs and 3 kills. Hayley Guess had 4 points, one dig, one assist, 3 kills and 4 blocks with a point. Danielle Montgomery had 3 kills and a block with a point. Kelsey Hainley had 3 points (one ace), 3 digs, 7 assists, 2 kills and 3 blocks with a point. Also for Middlesex, Raquel Pierce, 2 points, one kill; Caroline Davis, one point, one assist, one kill, one blocked point; Chelsea Lewter, one point, one kill; Kelly Purcell, 2 assists, one kill; Chelsi Blake, 2 points (one ace), one kill; Megan Payne, one dig, one assist; Lauren Figg, 2 kills. The Lady Chargers are 3-1 and have three road games this week. They are at W&L on September 11, at Essex on September 15, and at Northumberland on September 18. JV games begin at 6 p.m. and varsity games follow at 7:30 p.m. Lady Charger JVs improve to 4-0 by Tom Chillemi Middlesex JV quarterback Raheim Lockley hands off to halfback Donovan Jones as Skyler Bolten blocks in last Thursday’s 34-14 junior varsity loss to Mathews. (Photo by Larry Chowning) MHS JVs lose opener by Larry S. Chowning The Middlesex High School junior varsity football team lost its first game of the season on Sept. 3 to Mathews, 34-14. MHS was paced by wingbacks Chris Chamberlain and Malik Henderson, who both scored touchdowns in the losing cause. Chamberlain also scored on a two-point conversion. “We have a good athletic group of young men playing on our football team,” said MHS coach Austin Moon. “When we went back and looked at the tapes of the game the main problem was that we did not tackle well. If we improve on our tackling, I think we will win some games. “We’ve got a real young team that are learning the basics of the game,” he said. “It’s going to take a while, but I’m seeing improvements every day.” The JV Chargers hosted Lancaster September 10, and will travel to Essex on Middlesex’s P.J. Hart gets hit Wednesday, September 17. hard in junior varsity action The games start at 6:30 p.m. last week against Mathews. The Middlesex High JV Lady Chargers volleyball team swept three matches this week against non-district opponents and are 4-0 on the season. The JV Lady Chargers defeated visiting Rappahannock on September 3 in two games, 26-24 and 25-15. Bridgette Self was the big scorer for Middlesex with a total of 14 points in the two games. Ashley Williams and Ivy Perkins each contributed 6 strong assists in the victory. Ashley Lane had 4 impressive digs, showing her strength as a defensive player. Mary Stevens and Kelly Wilson debuted their talent in their first high school JV games and helped the starting lineup finish off the Raiders in the second game. On September 4, the JV Lady Chargers defeated Lancaster in two games, 25-20 and 25-17. Bridgette Self and Ashley Williams led the overall team scoring with 7 points apiece. Jessica Dixon helped with 6 assists, and Ivy Perkins tallied 4 impressive kills. On Monday, September 8, the Lady Chargers defeated visiting Rappahannock in two games. Middlesex trailed much of the first game but came back for a 25-23 win. JV Lady Charger coach Meredith Holt substituted freely in game two after getting a good lead. Rappahannock started a comeback attempt and Holt reinserted her starters, who held on for a 26-24 overtime win. “Game two was a total team effort,” said Holt. “Everyone played well.” Ivy Perkins was credited with 11 points in the second game. The Middlesex volleyball teams are at Washington & Lee tonight, September 11, and at Essex on Monday, September 15. On September 18 they play at Northumberland. The JV games are at 6 p.m. and the varsity games follow. Middlesex High wingback Marcus Hammond (#34) reaches for an overthrown pass as P.J. Roye of Mathews defends. The Chargers improved to 4-0 in the district and 6-4 overall. Pacing the Chargers was Alex Crittenden who finished with a season low 42. “Alex is playing good golf right now and he has remained the most consistent thus far,” said MHS coach Greg Harrow. Jake Fletcher and Harley Moore both found early troubles but bounced back to turn in 45s. “These guys did exactly what we’ve been talking about all season,” noted Harrow. “They put the bad holes behind them and played hard the rest of the way in.” Robbie Pitts had the fourth best score with a 49. “Robbie is young, but he works hard and is getting better every time he gets a chance, and it paid off for us today,” said Harrow. Others competing in the match were Drew Pitts (50) and Mason Goodrich (60). “This was a big win for us today and, hopefully, we can carry the enthusiasm and improved game with us the rest of the way,” said Harrow. “There are still some wrinkles that need ironed out. The Tidewater District Tournament is September 22. Middlesex cross-country teams have 28 members The Middlesex High crosscountry team opened its season on September 3 at King William. The Charger boys were led by returning sophomores Kevin Walsh and John Walsh and senior Mark Hall. Freshman Austin Bushong also participated for MHS. The rest of the boys did not have the necessary number of practices to run, which left the boys with not enough runners for a team score. The MHS girls ran five runners and lost a close meet with last year’s Tidewater District champion, King William, 28-31. Leading the girls were freshman Missy Hall and junior Lindsay Harrow, who finished second and third, respectively. Sophomore Rebecca Walker finished fifth, junior Stephanie Hutton placed seventh, and senior Tiana Serna finished 12th. The rest of the cross-country teams, which now consists of 15 boys and 13 girls, will be available for the teams’ next meet. Coaches Bill Murray and Johann Odom said they are looking forward to a strong season from this year’s teams. The Chargers will host Northumberland on Sept. 17. Seahorses fall to VES 36-25; host St. Christopher’s Friday by Jonathan Bennett ’10 The Fighting Seahorses of Christchurch School opened their football season with a close 36-25 loss at Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg on Saturday. Christchurch was leading 25-13 late in the fourth quarter until VES made a late comeback. As with the case against Collegiate last week, both teams scored early in the first quarter. VES scored first on the opening kickoff of the game, but sophomore lineman Julius Wormley (Hampton) of Christchurch blocked the extra point. Christchurch then answered on their first offensive play of the game with a 60-yard touchdown run by senior running back TJ Williams (Knightdale, N.C.). CCS kicker Justin Hale (Wake) made the extra point and the Seahorses took an early 7-6 lead. The defense held off VES for a good amount of time, playing very physically with great closing speed to the football. After taking a 13-7 lead, VES threatened to score again from the CCS six-yard line when the Seahorse defense tightened and Williams, playing safety, caused a fumble. Senior cornerback Noble Cunningham (Washington, D.C.) picked up the loose ball and returned it 94 yards for a touchdown, igniting the Christchurch sideline and evening the score at 13-13. With this energy the Seahorses’ defense caused three more turnovers before the end of the game—two interceptions and another fumble. The interceptions, one by freshman linebacker Carlos Gray (Temple Hills, Md.) and the other by senior linebacker Zach Hijjawi (Mason Neck), each came as VES was making a deep drive. The second fumble, also caused by Williams and recovered by senior lineman Kevin Miltz (Virginia Beach), also came on a deep VES drive. Christchurch’s final two touchdowns were running touchdowns, one by freshman Carlos Gray on a seven-yard run and the other by Williams from 40 yards out. Although Christchurch gave up three fourth quarter touchdowns, the defense played extremely well for the majority of the game. Williams played an excellent game with 206 rushing yards, two touchdowns and five tackles on defense. Also with five tackles, which led the team, were junior safety Shane Jones (Toano) and sophomore linebacker Cleveland Battle (Stem, N.C.). CCS will host Saint Christopher’s School on Friday, September 12, at 4:30 p.m. Colonial Athletic Association Commissioner Tom Yeager has announced the hiring of Kathryn F. “Katie” Lowe to the newly-created position of Director of Basketball Strategies. Lowe’s duties at the CAA will include developing strategic initiatives for basketball in the areas of marketing and scheduling, with an emphasis on women’s basketball. She will also be involved in the operation of the CAA men’s and women’s basketball championships. Lowe will report to Ron Bertovich, the CAA Deputy Commissioner of Basketball Operations. “We are excited about the knowledge and ideas that Katie will bring to our staff after working on the NCAA men’s and women’s basketball championship staffs,” Yeager said. “The CAA has made great strides in basketball over the past several years and we think the addition of Katie will allow us to build on that success.” Lowe has worked for the past 14 months at the NCAA office in Indianapolis, Ind., as the Division I men’s and women’s basketball intern. In that role, she provided assistance to the directors of the NCAA men’s and women’s basketball championship and their staffs. Lowe was involved in the selection process for the NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship and also helped in the operation of the event. She served as a liaison for transportation and travel needs of the NCAA staff and basketball committee during the championship. Prior to working at the NCAA, Lowe spent a year as an intern at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Among Katie Lowe her duties with the ODAC were managing numerous conference and NCAA championships, including the Division III national championships in volleyball, football and men’s basketball. Lowe is a magna cum laude graduate of Hollins University in Roanoke where she played volleyball for three seasons, and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. In 2003 Lowe graduated summa cum laude from Middlesex High School where she played both JV and varsity basketball and volleyball. She also played and coached in the Middlesex Youth Basketball League with her dad, the late Rick Lowe. Her older sister Brindley was an All-State volleyball setter and holds the state record for most assists/sets that resulted in points. Katie Lowe is the daughter of Martha Lowe of Urbanna. ymca youth soccer The 2008 fall soccer season is under way and it could not have been done alone. This year’s Cub Scout recruitment theme is “The School of Mischief.” This theme is about letting “boys be boys” by providing a safe, adult-supervised environment for boys to participate in timeless activities that are a natural part of boyhood. Paper airplanes, bottle rockets, bugs and occasional mud are all part of the School of Mischief, framed in Cub Scouting’s traditional educational program to instill values of self-reliance, responsibility and concern for others in boys ages first-grade to 10 years old. The School of Mischief theme also has a manifesto which states: “When a boy yearns to fire a BB gun, we teach him to do it safely. When a boy adventures into the woods, we teach him how to survive. When a boy scrapes his knee, we teach him how to take care of himself. When a boy plays capture-theflag with his friends, we teach him sportsmanship.” Traditional Cub Scout activities designated to the School of Mischief satisfy every boy’s innate desire to build, figure out things and explore. It will take more than a suitcase and makeshift laboratories as depicted in the television series “24.” One problem he emphasized is that requests for federal assistance has to come from the local government, one of the major issues that delayed federal response to Hurricane Katrina. Robinson then enumerated some of the state and federal support teams that have been Colonel Scott Robinson organized post 9-11 and the activation process. In massive emergency scenarios, Robinson pointed to the need for an established community or county emergency plan. “Virginia has an excellent disaster response plan,” he added. Emergency plans should include the crucial role of the workplace, neighborhoods, church groups, and clubs such as Rotary, all the way down to the individual person. In flood situations, for example, “Would one know simple things such as where and how to turn off your utilities?” he asked. Important personal documents should be kept in waterproof containers. The 2008 issue took second place in the Environment & “Going Green” category of the Newspaper Business Development Contest for newspapers with circulations under 50,000. The contest is co-sponsored by the Inland Press Association and the Newspaper Business Development Network, and honors excellence among North American newspapers in developing new products and new revenue ideas. Awards were presented at the New Business Development Conference August 14-16 in Chicago. Windows on the Bay was the only entry from Virginia to place in the contest. Above, from left, special section coordinators Susan Faulkner and Reid Pierce-Armstrong display the award. Robert A. Gary III honored The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors recently passed a resolution honoring the late Robert A. Gary III for his dedicated service on the Middlesex County Industrial Development Authority (IDA). Mr. Gary passed away on July 17. He was a charter member of the IDA and served as its chairman, vice chairman, secretary and treasurer. Mathews Market Days winners named Winners of the 2008 Mathews Market Days art competition conducted by the Mathews Art Group were announced Friday morning by this year’s judge, Williamsburg artist/teacher Lynn Hosegood. The Best in Show award went to Gary Edmondson for a small, precisely rendered landscape. Archie Fripp’s photography took first place, and Richard De Paul won second place for his watercolors. De Paul also won the Artists’ Choice Award. Impressed by the overall quality of entries, judge Hose- good presented a dozen participating artists with honorable mention ribbons. The awards went to G. Watts Brown, Gail Cunningham, Constance Jones, Don Mikulecky, Kathleen Noffsinger, Jane Partin, Gib Pulley, Cynthia Ray, Jerry Spangler, Sandy Stromberg, John Tobin and James Ziemer. The People’s Choice Award for art displayed at the “From Whence We Came” exhibit went to Bob Haynes for his watercolor of Christ Church. Winner of the Scaffie raffle was Arnold Ripley of Susan. Proceeds from the sale of raffle tickets will fund several art scholarships to be awarded to Mathews High School graduates. The Scaffie sailing vessel was donated by retired Williamsburg educator Martin Mathes and restored by Rob and Terry Robinson. It’s time to give ‘em some help, can you? And then there’s the park; it’s just time to turn the Nature Girl shovel over. While I’ll still be nerding on Wednesdays with a great group of dedicated “gardenerds,” I’m sure there’s a member who has a zest for working on a community park project. Remember, the world is run by those who show up, so we’ll hope to see you this Sunday at 3 p. m. And now to Krunch for the boat report and other things. Imagine my surprise when thumbing through the new Woodenboat magazine (Sept.Oct. 2008) and seeing pictures of Mystic Seaport’s latest project, the restoration of “Joann,” an eastern dragger. You can’t tell these photos from our “Crockett” project, except that the “Crockett” is oh so much prettier. They have a gazillion dollars and a working shipyard, and we have John England and three other guys, yet “F.D. Crockett” is every bit as well done and probably more complicated than “Joann.” We have some very special work going on down on the dock so, gentle reader, don’t you miss it. And, if you find us worthy, some financial support would sure help. While I am begging, how about checking out the Deltaville website under donated boats for sale. We’ve got some dandies, and how about those Jags? They can be seen at Nauti Nell’s, and most of the boats are in our Field of Dreams next to Deltaville Boatyard. Uncrowded waters, perfect weather, let’s go boating! Next up for “Explorer” is the “taste of Suffolk” up the Nansemond River. We have our guides out just to find the place—oh well, they are paying, so we are going. We are having a shake up at the museum—people coming and going—signs of a healthy organization. If you would like to join in the prestige of our board and have some time to share, we’d love to talk to you. The pay is terrible, but the satisfaction: priceless. Head of School Deborah Cook led the program by welcoming preschool through grade eight students for the 2008-09 academic year, encouraging each to plan for personal and academic successes while keeping this year’s theme of courage in the forefront of their actions. “Heroic bravery is certainly one part of being courageous,” Cook explained to the assembled students, referring to people throughout history who have explored the world, fought for what they believed in, or put the safety of others above themselves. “Bravery can also help us face fear of difficulties or failure in our everyday life.” Prior to the official opening of the academy, the 18-member faculty attended a three-day Soccer . . . Chesapeake Academy kindergartners engage in a group cuddle to show their excitement in meeting new friends and reuniting with old friends on the first day of school. workshop on differentiated instruction led by academic dean Julie Keesee. Building on a framework for designing curriculum units, instruction and performance assessments implemented by the academy in 2005, Keesee reviewed with the faculty teaching techniques that address individual student learning style differences. Additional enhancements to the academy’s college preparatory curriculum include the addition of an 8th grade Writer’s Workshop in the Technology Lab designed to help students develop the skills to communicate ideas effectively. The Writer’s Workshop is team-taught by Keesee and English teacher Ted Cook and supports writing projects across the 8th grade curriculum, while targeting technology skills, traits of writing, the writing process, vocabulary study, and grammar. Chesapeake Academy added one year of Latin to its middle school language arts curriculum. Additionally, the academy initiated a “Bridge to the Middle School” program to help smooth the academic and social transition from the lower school to middle school. The recent change to a fullday kindergarten program and five-mornings-a-week preschool program in response to the needs of families seeking sound educational foundations for their emerging school-age children, has been wonderfully received by students and teach- ers alike. Early childhood teachers Beth Clark, Julia Zimmerman and Karen Minter are thrilled about having more time to explore topics indepth, to elaborate and repeat activities supporting differentiated instruction, and to balance academic activities with crucial social and moral development. Chesapeake Academy is an independent school offering a half-day preschool and pre-kindergarten, and full-day instruction in grades kindergarten through eight. There are openings in some classes and mid-year enrollment inquiries are welcome. It is an accredited member of the Virginia Association of Independent Schools and currently serves students of Gloucester, Lancaster, Mathews, Middlesex and Northumberland counties. To arrange for a campus tour or for additional information, contact Hilary Scott, director of admissions, at 438-5575. Chess lessons for youngsters begin Tuesday The Fall/Holiday issue publishes October 1 Advertising deadline is September 17! Call Deborah, Maeghaen or Wendy at the Southside Sentinel 758-2328 or email [email protected] Hurry! Have you ever seen a group of Middlesex school kids teaching each other to play chess? It is a reality coming to a library near you! Originally, chess fever was launched in 2004 as part of the Middlesex County Schools’ gifted education program with the help of Rev. Dan Hough, former pastor of Saluda Baptist Church. It was taught during club time at St. Clare Walker Middle School for two years. Then, last year, when the schedule changed at SCW, then high school junior Greg Dorsey began coming down to Middlesex Elementary after school and teaching it to interested students there. Now Dorsey is at it again! This time he wants to hold a chess class at night from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Urbanna library on Grace Street. This new program, “Chess Tuesdays,” has chess instruction for students in grades 1-5, and will be held from September 16 through October 21. To enroll a child, a sign-up sheet is available at the main reception desk of Middlesex Elementary. Dorsey is hoping this new time and place, plus his love for the game, will yield a new generation of players to come. The class is limited to 14 kids for the term. Parents can bring their child in and enjoy the library surroundings during class. For more information call Beth Knight Brown (7582277), director for gifted education in the Middlesex County Public Schools.
