Evidence of success
Cornucopia may be in niche magazine, but it has also grown into a fully-fledged global title,
distributed through bookshops, by subscription in more than 50 countries and in the rooms of
some 25 luxury hotels. It earns more than half its revenue from individual sales with a highly
cosmpolitan readership in Europe, North America, Turkey and the Far East.
In recent years, Cornucopia has developed a worldwide subscriber club scheme entitling
readers to discounts on books, luxury couture, holidays and 5-star hotels. Another successful
innovation was the launch into sales of high-quality books which has pushed revenue from
subscribers alone to nearly £50,000. These new departures have further strengthened reader
loyalty which has always been high. Response to reader surveys is unusually strong, and the
renewal rate for subscriptions is a very rare 88%.
The making of a modern classic
It is extraordinary that a magazine which everyone admired from the start but which commentators
dismissed as commercial suicide (an expensive high-circulation publication about a relatively
little known culture for an exclusive readership) should have become a thriving enterprise.
It has done this thanks to the loyalty it has built up among its readers, its staff, and its
advertisers. Cornucopia is produced with a skeleton workforce and a dedicated team of
freelances, many of whom have worked on it since it launched. And people hang on to their
copies: back issues can fetch between £30 and £300.
