InBusiness MOUNTAIN VIEW VOICE Java: as big as coffee PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE NOW A GLOBAL FOUNDATION FOR HIGH-TECH DEVICES, SOFTWARE By Angela Hey I ADAM HEYMAN Minnie Ingersoll, product manager for Google’s WiFi initiative, discusses the project during her keynote address at the annual Market Place business mixer at the Computer History Museum last Wednesday, May 17. Below, Market Place attendees learn more about the muchanticipated plan to bring free wireless Internet access to the entire city of Mountain View. Whither WiFi GOOGLE TO PROVIDE WEB ACCESS SIGNAL FROM 350 POINTS AROUND THE CITY By Kathy Schrenk I f you believe Minnie Ingersoll, it’s quite a time to be a business owner in Mountain View. This summer, everyone’s favorite search behemoth is getting ready to launch its first city-wide wireless Internet initiative, right here in its home town. Ingersoll is the product manager for Google’s WiFi program in Mountain View, and she sees this as a perfect partnership that will not only benefit residents but businesses, which can take advantage of the free Internet access. Google plans to start letting some users connect to the network in June and have it completely rolled out city-wide by the end of August, a few months later than originally planned. Ingersoll spoke to hundreds of people from local businesses and nonprofit organizations at the Mountain View Chamber of Commerce Market Place Business & Technology Showcase at the Computer History Museum on May 17. This was the first time there was a keynote speaker at the third annual event, said Chamber president and CEO Carol Olson. Ingersoll’s talk was a chance for the hundreds of attendees and 81 exhibitors to learn about how the Google WiFi project will benefit them, she said. “It’s an innovative kind of opportunity that makes Mountain View a unique place to do business,” she said. For Google, the WiFi effort is just the beginning of what Ingersoll believes will become a nationwide trend. “I think people are going to expect to be able to access the Internet when they’re roaming at their friends’ house or the coffee shop,” she said. This is how it works: Google is in the process of positioning 350 radio transmitters on light posts throughout the city. Testing to ensure full coverage is ongoing, and some radios still may be repositioned, Ingersoll said. Those devices, made by Sunnyvale company Tropos, will transmit to one of three aggregation points, located atop 444 Castro Street, the light posts at the St. Francis High School football field and the Googleplex. Anyone with Internet-enabled devices, including laptops and cell phones, will be able to connect with the network and use the Internet for free. Generally, the coverage will only be available outdoors, unless users buy a device called a CPE to bring the signal inside. Google will provide this “deep coverage” free at the library. When someone connects to the Web via the wireless network, they’ll start at the “landing page,” which will feature “modules” created by local See WIFI, page 31 ADAM HEYMAN n San Francisco last week, Sun Microsystems, inventor of the Java programming language, celebrated the 10th anniversary of its JavaOne conference for software developers. More than 15,000 people attended the event, Angela Hey and more than 1.1 million subscribe to Sun Java Enterprise System for creating business applications in Java. Besides Sun, other Mountain View participants included Agitar, Azul Systems, Google and ILOG. Since its inception 15 years ago, Java has stimulated the economy, creating thousands of companies and jobs. It has transformed software development globally, enabling software for computers, mobile phones and machinery to be created amazingly quickly and reliably. Sun, unfortunately, has been unable to capitalize on its invention. Java is a foundation for some of the world’s most productive software creation processes and tools. Java is pervasive and may even be hiding in your cell phone, but chances are you will never see it. Students who want to learn Java, mature programmers who want to brush up their skills and software development professionals can all See HEY, page 30 MAY 26, 2006 ■ MOUNTAIN VIEW VOICE ■ 29 Inbusiness Sun Microsystems CEO Jonathan Schwartz hopes to revitalize his company by monetizing Java. Today, the expertise of other Mountain View companies keeps Java at the forefront. Agitar, for example, creates software for testing Java software modules. It helps software developers catch bugs before they have a chance to cause widespread havoc. Early elimination of errors tends to increase system reliability and reduce production costs. Azul Systems has network computers that are optimized to run high-volume transaction systems written in Java. At JavaOne, company reps explained how their multicore processors use innovative garbage collection, parallel processing and context switching to make Java code run up to 45 times faster than on a regular computer server. Google is at the forefront in using the popular Ajax — Asynchronous JavaScript and XML — software development tool to integrate Java with Web data. Google makes really dynamic and robust web applications by reusing Java components. Note that JavaScript, a language used mainly by browsers, is not the same as Java, a language suitable for both browsers and Web servers. (Check out Google’s Java tools on http://code.google. com/webtoolkit if you want to try reusing Java components in your Web application.) ILOG is the company you whiz past on the freeway as you go from 101 to 85. Its software helps people make the best choices using optimization in applications ranging from transportation through telecommunications to supply chain processing. Java is used to display mathematical results with attractive, informative graphics. ILOG’s JTGO (JViews Telecom Graphic Objects) enables telecommunications engineers to see dynamic maps of their network outages, bottlenecks and performance over the Internet. Cool applications of Java include the server software for Nike’s www.nikeid.com Web site. It enables Nike employees to rapidly add new shoe models to the site. It also allows you to design sports shoes decorated with your name in the colors of your choice. Sun, which has seen financial trouble, recently shook up its management, and new CEO Jonathan Schwartz claims on his blog that Sun does indeed know how to monetize Java. Clearly some revenues come from Java — but are they high enough, given the vast Java economy on display at JavaOne? Transforming this company, which got its start by making workstations more open and more inexpensive, will be a huge challenge for Schwartz. Leveraging Sun with an economic engine jolted by Java will require aggressive acquisitions, fast innovation and splashy marketing. Meanwhile, we look forward to another decade of JavaOne success. Inbusiness ■ PROFILES IN LEADERSHIP Melinda Strole listens to Debbie Owens (right), owner of Debbie Lyn’s Costumes, pitch her store at Market Place. The annual event is organized by the Mountain View Chamber of Commerce to promote local businesses and provide a place for them to network. ADAM HEYMAN WIFI Continued from page 29 organizations and businesses (including the Voice) to promote events and activities. Mountain View High School has a module, for instance. So does Shoreline Amphitheatre. “Anyone can create a module,” Ingersoll said. “It’s extremely easy. I want to encourage businesses, especially small businesses, to contribute.” Businesses can also use the network to edit and update Google Local listings, she said. One exhibitor at last week’s event, Barry Tonge of Edward Jones, said he looked forward to using the service. He spends a lot of time out of the office on calls, and with this new network, he said, he can spend time between appointments working in his car or at a coffee shop. “It opens up some doors to be a little more flexible,” he said. Julie Hart Conde, general manager of Hotel Avante, said the wireless network would ben- efit her company’s clients, many of whom are business travelers. Ingersoll made sure to point out to the audience that the network, by its very nature, is not secure. “I think that bears repeating,” she said. It is possible for someone to intercept a transmission and capture sensitive data, she said. However, Google won’t be tracking Web traffic and usage patterns on the network, she said. “We are not storing the content of your communications.” V Editor’s Note: Leadership Mountain View (LMV) prepares adults who live or work in the city to take on a wide variety of leadership roles in the community. Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, the program guides 32 individuals through a ninemonth program each year. Over 400 persons have graduated from the program since it began Fara Brock in the 1989. The profile below is one in a series that will run periodically to highlight the accomplishments of LMV graduates. FARA BROCK Fara Brock, graduate of the Leadership Mountain View Class of 2000, enrolled in the program with hopes of developing her leadership skills, becoming more involved in the school district and strengthening her connection with the city. “I was especially excited about the class requirement to do a police ride-along and spend a day at the firemen’s training station on Shoreline,” she says. Although Brock expected to “connect with people who all have the same concern for this great community and to better under stand how the city government works,” her participation in LMV exceeded her expectations. Along with meeting government officials, she “gained a whole new appreciation for how Mountain View fits into the regional picture of Silicon Valley.” The course sparked Brock’s interest in taking “a broader role in the leadership of this community,” she says. Brock went on to serve as Los Altos-Mountain View PTA Council President from 2002-04, overseeing 18 PTAs in the area.
