Shakespeare’s Year
April 26th 2014 is the 450th anniversary of
William Shakespeare’s birth, and the new
season is not without a quota of ballets
inspired by the English playwright. Northern
Ballet opens its season with David Nixon’s
A Midsummer Night’s Dream on 6 September,
Stuttgart Ballet begins its year with Cranko’s
Taming of the Shrew on 25 September, Polish
National Ballet gives Neumeier’s Midsummer
Night’s Dream on 14 November and Pacific
NorthWest Ballet performs Balanchine’s
version on 11 April; Dutch National Ballet
presents the premiere of Krzysztof Pastor’s
The Tempest on 18 June and revives Ashton’s
Dream on 1 March. Romeo and Juliets remain
prolific in versions by Jochen Ulrich (Ballett
Landestheater Linz), Mats Ek (Royal Swedish
Ballet), MacMillan (The Royal Ballet), Nacho
Duato (Mikhailovsky Ballet), Krzysztof
Pastor (Polish National Ballet), John Cranko
(Staatsballett Berlin, Munich and Stuttgart),

Cinderellas...
Cinderellas are out in full force this season, with productions by Renato
Zanella (Teatro Colon), James Kudelka (National Ballet of Canada), Stijn
Celis (Aalto Ballett Theater Essen), Goyo Montero (Ballett Nürnberg),
Michael Corder (National Ballet of Portugal), Ashton (Boston Ballet) and

In Birmingham, BRB are offering a triple bill of three early Ashton ballets
and the ever-enduring La Fille mal gardée in June. Under the umbrella title
Darkness and Light, the programme comprises the poignant Dante Sonata,
created at the height of World War II; Les Rendezvous, Ashton’s first major
work for the the Vic Wells Ballet; and the light-hearted Façade, inspired by
Edith Sitwell’s nonsensical poetry. In London, the Royal Ballet is reviving
Rhapsody in February and The Dream in May. The Dream can also be seen in
Amsterdam, danced by the Dutch National Ballet in March. In Florida,
where former Royal Ballet dancer Iain Webb directs the Sarasota Ballet,
the company is presenting four Ashton ballets during the season: company
premieres of Illuminations and Sinfonietta, and revivals of Monotones I & II and
Birthday Offering. Boston Ballet has Ashton’s Cinderella programmed in March.
In New York, ABT will give A Month of the Country in November, while the
National Ballet of Canada will be performing the same ballet in February.
